Surprise is 1d6 no modifiers, at least if I'm reading correctly. A 1 or a 2 indicate surprise. 3-6 indicate not being surprised.

@Ergo Cat: going by 3.5 times (1st has a suprising lack of info) banded mail takes approx. 4 mins to get into. half that if you have help from someone and only 1 min if you don it hastily (in 3.5 it means an AC 1 worse than normal). so you could reasonable get into it in time to fight

Will you all be holding a defensive position INSIDE the guard tower?

Gulvin is a dunce, but doesn't have a death wish. He will try to stay inside the tower, unless the menace absolutely needs to be met outside of the tower.

For those blessed with logic your train of thought might flow like this: Wolves (assumption of what the creature is based on evidence)are predatory creatures who love horse-meat but fear fire and shy away from people. So, if you stay inside and hold a defensive position by the fire the wolf will call its pack and possibly only kill your horses (making travel slow)unless they aren't just wolves but something more sinister.

So, Aerius doesn't like the idea of the horses getting eaten. But that may just be because he doesn't like doing any more work than he has to.

Also, I added that last line because I had forgotten that Elves had Infravision, and had typed up a post where Aerius threw a fiery log from the campfire out toward the horses... Then I remembered and deleted the post, but wanted something to show for it :-P

I have noticed that our little game here has come to a screeching halt (i.e. no one has posted in almost a week). What I would like to know is the reason. Is it a general lack of interest in the story? My narrations? Alien abduction? I will "fix" anything I am capable of, but I need to know the cause to find the solution.

I am both out-of-town and was waiting for Aerius' action so that I can act, since Gulvin doesn't see/know what Aerius does.

Uh I'm going to be super extra busy for a week or so. So don't mind me.
Also 1st edition confuses me. Which isn't necessarily bad or unexpected but it means I can't just do quick posts.

I can understand generalized lack of time due to that thing they call "life". As to the difficulty of the edition would you all (emphasis) prefer a switch to another edition for a less confusing system? I have no source materials for second or fourth so you would be "stuck" with 3.5 if you converted....if you did convert all books would be open subject to conventional rules i.e no using outdated 3.0 materials.

No, I'm cool with 1st. It's still a nostalgia/coolness thing. Edition isn't a problem for me.

I guess the halt was my fault. I had posted in my last post that Aerius moved back to the fire to report what he saw (as he had no plan to go out there and shortsword larger than wolf monsters solo), and was waiting for other replies while others were waiting for something for him. I'm making a post to clear things up. Sorry.

Although I guess I don't need awareness of the rules to say something dorky and run around suicidally.

Philosophically speaking: If a player is absent from a forum in which no one posts with any regularity, is the player really gone?

EDIT: also 2 things

1-Zachol, you are being attacked but I will give you an impromptu attack of opportunity for "holding action" if you can score a crit I will cancel the attack if not it will just be your turn to act after the wolf bites you.
2-Thoughts on putting the LFG back up to attract new players?

I thought I was pretty clear that Gulvin was going outside with his shield and weapon. I guess not.

The last two posts were of you getting your armor on and deciding saving the horses was better than walking....nothing to suggest you were going outside yet unless I was misinterpreting your motives.

Yep, I figured that "saving the horses" comment was directly indicative of my moving outside to do just that.

Edit - I suppose I should have made it more explicit, looking on it now.

Not wanting to take your words as actions I assumed you were waiting on agreement from the group or other interaction before making a formal statement of action

to clear things up here is what I last perceived you as actually DOING:

Mercutio- talking about killing, waking up, preping
Zachol- Defensive stance in the door way
AD- reporting to Merc and Zach
EC- Putting on armor

So is that "20" the wolf's attack?

yea....not looking too good for the first roll on the DMs behalf...the good news is: crits haven't been invented yet!

I figure I will show my "to hit" rolls but hide the damage rolls and give you generalized description of the severity of the wound (ex. The wolf tears your arm off (1/4+ of total HP in damage) or the dagger nicks your arm (1-2 pts) )

Ugh whatever.

Edit: Although how about we avoid something like "the wolf tears off your arm" for now. That seems like something that would accompany a near-death hit.
