Avengers (OOC)
So this is the place for OOC discussions, comments and general banter. I encourage players to talk about whatever they feel like in this thread, including suggestions and concepts etc.
My GMing style tends towards collaboration with players, I'm here to facilitate you guys having a good time and telling a good story, if anyone has a cool OOC idea for something to do with their character, here is also a good place to air it. Of course, if someone wants to discuss something privately with me, then of course sending a PM is also fine. |

If I add removable to the Cloak, that's enough for me to build the Sanctum Sanctorum (no, spell-check, I do not mean Rick Santorum or Santeria! I'm not talking about politicians OR magic. Well, I suppose I am talking about magic, but not that kind).

Ahaha
Well, a Sanctum Sanctorum is always cool. After all, it gives the team a place to hang out inbetween saving the world. |

Alright, I'm working on my character (slowly but surely), and I've got some questions as I'm going along.
Let's say I create a damage power to represent my swords, do I have to create the same power twice to reflect that one is light based and the other is darkness based, or can I make one power, refer to it as the pair of swords, and give it the light and darkness descriptor? If I do that, would that prohibit me from making an attack with just one of the two blades? |

I don't think you should have to create the power twice, but that's a GM call, really. Indeed, I'd just give the Damage "multi-attack" to explain how it's two swords rather than one.

Well, I also want the option to choose to use only one of the two blades, rather than just making one power and giving it both descriptors and giving it multi-attack. Hm, thinking about it some more, could I make it a multi-attack power with both the light and darkness descriptors, and give it the alternate effect extra to make it just a light attack or just a dark attack?
Few other questions: If I create a damage power that requires an attack roll, my attack bonus added to my damage rank can't exceed twice my power level right? That means if my attack bonus is +20, for example, my damage rank couldn't be higher than 8? Or did I get that wrong? Last edited by Linklegacy77; 5th of November, 2011 at 06:58. |

I think choosing one blade or the other is really just a descriptor, to be honest. You don't HAVE to use the Multi-Attack with every attack. It just allows you do so if you want to.
Attack + effect can't be more than twice your power level. Keep in mind that there are other PL caps --> Parry+Toughness, Dodge+Toughness, Fort+Will all have to be PLx2 or less, and total skill modifier can't be higher than PL+10. |

Yup yup, so was my interpretation of it right with the numbers?

Yes, but I'd caution you against doing that, especially as it is very extreme. For instance, you'd hit Strange only half the time, at most, and you'd do at most 2 damage to him. And probably far not even that.
People who crunch numbers, and there have been a lot of those at ATT, have done so and mathematically proven that having that extreme a trade-off is a bad idea. The recommendation is a slightly damage shifted attack and a slightly toughness shifted defense. Last edited by Mercutio; 5th of November, 2011 at 08:05. |

Wait, maybe I'm completely misunderstanding this. If I have a +20 to hit with my sword attacks, and they have a damage rank of 8, I'd only hit strange half the time? I thought the way it worked was to roll a d20, add bonus to hit, and compare to the appropriate defense, which is in this case your parry. If I hit, then you'd make a toughness check against my damage rank + 15, which would be 23. You have impervious 12, but since my damage rank of 8 is more than half of that, it gets ignored. You have a +14 on your toughness, so you'd need to roll an 8 or lower to have a degree of failure and take damage from the attack.
Am I doing it right? I certainly wasn't planning on going with an attack roll that high and a damage rank that low, it was just a random number I threw out as a calculation. |

Yeah, you're doing it correctly. I suck at math. And I'm getting myself all confused with d20^.

Gotcha gotcha, so I'm not doing this ass backwards, that's nice to know.
Yeah, I figured a +20 to hit was a bit extreme, I'd freaking almost never miss anything with a bonus that high, and I'd like to hit things a little bit harder than that. |

This forum needs a place for trolls like myself to dwell.

So I figured out how arrays work, and damn, that makes things so much simpler. Now I don't have to spend 40 points to make a light and a dark version of the same power with different side effects

Alright, I've got a first draft of my character done. At the moment, I'm considering getting rid of the mind reading power to get some more advantages, and I plan on taking another look at the powers to see what can be tweaked. So far though, I think it looks pretty good.
I've also decided to go a different direction with the whole swords thing, rather than having two swords that he is linked to, from which he draws his power, he instead was bestowed the power to create those two swords out of thin air (they're both pure energy weapons), and uses the energy of the swords to perform all of his light/dark magics. |

So I'm feeling like I was probably premature to think I could join this game and have decided to back out for the time being. I know nothing about M&M and I have none of the books and am not thinking I'm gonna get away with it.

Sorry to post in an OOC I'm not a player in but it seemed the currently most appropriate place.
Doctor Strange. Due out 2013. With Steve Ditko, Stan Lee, Avi Arad and Thomas Donnelly at the helm I doubt it will disappoint fans. I'm certainly looking forward to it. I'm also bothered that some people consider Wolverine's rage a power while other do not. Some believe it is just a character trait and more of a personality aspect. But it has been shown that he actually possesses a power to rage and gains abilities (increasted strength, stamina, agility, unpredictability of his combat moves and near invulnerability to any kind of mind probe or control) when he does so while losing others (like his ability to think straight). I'm not downing you for not including it as it is an often overlooked ability. Just stating that it is my opinion it should be included as a power rather than simply a personality trait. Both, I suppose, are valid though. edit: Oh, also... are there any free rules for M&M 3e available online?

True, the build I found didn't have the rage but who says I can't flavor that with some good roleplaying?

You can just represent rage with using All Out and Power Attack to decrease your defence and up your attack and decrease. That's basically how he works in his rage anyway.

No free rules, but check http://grfiles.game-host.org/ as there are some previews and built up characters.

Ah, dang. Well if there were some easily legally accessable rules available online then I would considering throwing my hat into the "interested in playing" pool. I don't currently have the disposable income to purchase the books yet either so I'll content myself with trolling for the time being.

Yeah, you'd either have to buy it or DL it illegally. That said, I believe there's a cheap PDF version available for download from their website, and you only need one book to participate as a player.
http://www.greenronin.com/store/product/grr5501e.html $17.50 for the PDF. Last edited by Linklegacy77; 7th of November, 2011 at 14:51. |
