I've updated the Template to include Insight Rank, and an easer-to-follow Wound tracker.

Hey copper have you managed to look at my sheet is sent you?

I'm only able to get sporadic net access at the moment but I'm going to assume that you have and it's ok and I'll download your template and complete it and hopefully post it up tomorrow gods of sporadic Wifi permitting. Will check here before I do.

Anyway concept so they don't clash with other peoples:

Pheonix Isawa shugenga, going for the stereotypical pascifist role and specialised in void.

I've not seen your sheet - as previously mentioned, my inbox is getting cluttered, and my e-mail is inaccessible, and so I've asked everyone to get their sheets up onto the board. I'll check each sheet in turn, then.

I'd recommend looking over Vortigern's sheet (posted previously) before you go any further, to ensure that there's no replication of character traits.

I'll be looking over the posted character sheets later tonight. Expect my response to each around the same time.

Those players who have yet to get their sheets up have until Sunday at the latest to do so. I'll be looking to start the campaign at that time, and late posters will need to wait to ve introduced to the story after they've gotten everything to me for approval.

Edit!: Scratch that. I'm still waiting for both Vortigern and AbidingDude to finish their sheets. I won't be checking either until they've applied any desired changes.

I'll keep checking to see whether everyone else manages to get their characters up tonight or tomorrow (which is when I have dedicated internet access).

And Privated. Checking over the sheet now.

Update!: Can everyone be sure to add a second post to their threads, detailing their Twenty Question answers? Also, please can everyone ensure that their "Insight Rank" is posted in the following format: Rank (Ring and Skill total), or 1 (120) for example.

Now that we have worked out that kink with my concept, I'll try and get my sheet up ASAP.

I'll be checking the sheet tomorrow. In the meantime, please get the history added -- makes it easier to reference when checking the sheet.

Update!: Am I the only one who thinks the following is a perfect theme song for a Legend of the Five Rings game? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFLMLHPVhaw

Finally: am I just waiting on elpresidente now? I think everyone else has gotten their sheets up?

Completely finished. All need to know is the general type of terrain where we'll be starting the game, so I can edit my stats for the Void Dragon Kiho. (Plains, Mountains, Seashore/River, Volcano/Desert).

It'll be seashore/river, I suppose, though the prelude might involve several changes in scenery.

Okay, all four character have been approved. We're now waiting only on elpresidente; he has until the weekend to get his sheet up, otherwise we'll be starting without him (though he can be added to the campaign as and when his sheet has been approved).

Thanks for the heads up. I doubt we'll get started (or at least seriously underway) by then, anyways.

For the Tamori Technique of Alchemy, when is the roll made for the spell? i.e. how much of the pre-preparation of alchemy actually happens ahead of time? ;P Can you for instance spend a void point on a potion in preparing it, then recover it before the potion is expended?

I'd imagine that the Spell Casting Roll is made when the potion is used, though there could be a rule somewhere that says otherwise.

AbidingDude, have you ever come across this before?

ElPresidente is currently on holiday Copper, though he is back this weekend. I'm not sure how solid his ability to get on the internet is until then unfortunately.

Thanks Solar. Apologises for elpresidente if he previously notified me of this, and I had forgotten.

I'll be looking to begin the game soon either way, but will get him inserted into the story as soon as possible.

I have not come across it before. I feel like it would be against RAI (though not RAW). Were it my game, I'd let my player's shugenja choose whether to roll with at preparation or consumption for each individual spell. He must choose whether or not to spend Void whenever the spell is rolled (beginning or end, his option). If rolled with Void at brewing, I'd let the Void points refresh, but also say that he can have only (Void) prepared spells enhanced with Void points. When a spell rolled at consumption, I'd always allow Void to be spent on it.

The reason for keeping it limited if he wants to roll the Void at the beginning would be because he would get to know how good the spell was from outset. If he didn't like it, he could expend it at the end of the day and re-brew it the next if he didn't like it. So, a shugenja with a day or two of down time could keep rolling + using Void until he had the perfect spell (that had exploded dice numerous times). That seems reasonable, if he's restricted to a few Void-enhanced spells. Also, not limiting it would allow a Shugenja to run around with his full complement of spells enhanced (and optimized with Void) and still have full Void points himself. Which I would say is clearly beyond the intentions of the rules.

So yeah, for my two cents, I'd recommend either limiting it to (Void) prepared spells with Void enhancement, or requiring all Void and rolling to be done at consumption (the latter does seem to cut down on the School's awesome though, which I don't usually like to do).

..... <---(grains of salt with which to take my advice)

I think I'll go with the ruling that requires the shugenja to perform a Spell Casting Roll upon the potion's consumption, at which time Void Points can be used as per the rules to increase the dice pool. In truth, I tend to try and keep to the rules -- or easier house rules -- when I find myself running a new game system for the first time; that's what I'll be doing here.

Given that, though the use of potions, anyone can gain use of Spells and their benefits, the power is still a considerably useful and awesome one. Requiring SCRs at the time of consumption means that a shugenja will also not be presented with the temptation of allocating each of his normal Spells to potions beforehand, in doing which he could keep rolling/re-trying until he achieved fantastic results, even without the use of Void Points.

Spells are powerful, but -- like all actions -- unpredictable. Being able to save yourself an array of Spells that you know are going to be amazing cuts down on that some, and I'd rather not put the temptation there, even if I trust Vortigern not to indulge in it.

So, yes: Spell Casting Rolls are required upon consumption of the potion.

Typically, samurai will wear a large mon for their clan on the back of their kimono or kataginu. The family and school symbols will be worn on the front, but the choice of which side – left or right – has great significance. The mon closest to the right is there to guide the samurai’s sword, while the mon on the left is that which is closest to his heart.
Which mon -- family or school -- is located on the right breast, and which on the left? Out of curiosity.
