Actually, that whole "death only by choice thing isn't completely accurate, now is it? If my character loses two of her form dice, then she's out of the running, though not necessarily dead, isn't she?

Oh, and I just remembered to ask: Is it true that RPGers say "roll the dice" even if it's a single die?

Darius -- Huge Black Company fan. The fourth omnibus just came out.

Cheese -- Oh yes, you are correct. I didn't think of that. Your character can always come back in the next chapter in that case, though. Permanent death (i.e. struck off the We Owe list, sheet sent to the mortuary, no chance for advancement) is always voluntary.

As for what RPGers say, I've no real idea. The lingo changes pretty rapidly. I'm not even sure what I say, haha.

K, I just read that on someone's post somewhere online, and found it kind of amusing.

Sorry, been fighting a cold, and thought I was getting better. Then my body decided to give me the middle finger and shut down for 36 hours straight. Awesome.

Anyway, just posted up a lovely little spy, hopefully that will shake things up a bit.

Love your character. The rhyme in the description is particularly endearing.

So, Croaker, time to start the best interests, right?

There will be a slight delay -- I have to finish some work today. Tomorrow I'll post the NPCs and start the best interests.

Croaker- I gave it some thought and Iraj's short sword is not the same as the one that is developing a taste for female blood.

Probably for the best given you've got two female leads running around with you.

Here's how the round robin works for best interest: jump in whenever you want and throw down a best interest. Then you wait until everyone else has gone, and then I jump in with another best interest or two. Then you guys get another round of stating best interests, then I go again, and then if you have any more pressing interests you can name those. Two best interests is best though.

The idea is for every NPC to have one, maybe two best interests, and for the players to have at least two best interests. These state your relationships to everyone else and sow the seeds of conflict.

So get to it! Name NPCs, other players, whatever you think your character would do! The game is entirely open, so if you can conceivably think of a way for your character to know another character's goal, go ahead and cast a best interest in direct opposition to that goal!

I've reworded some of your particular strength to be more neutral for the collection of strengths, since it's possible that someone else will take that same strength in later chapters. The personalization you added to the strengths are absolutely great; don't take this as a correction. I just wanted to preserve them neutrally for future chapters.

The format I gave, however, should be followed in the future. That way I can just cut and paste the crunchy bits into the Particular Strength thread. Any personal descriptions you want to add should be added to the end of the "stat block" for particular strengths, so I can cut it out when I throw them into the collective.

Things are shaping up! Yay!

Hey Croaker? I had been planning for Sawrina to still be looking for Dipaa'ni, but Raziel's interest implies that she's already a pupil... Is it sort of a "First to speak, first served" kind of thing? If so, I can change what I intended.

I think it's a first speak first served kinda thing, but I'll change it this time. Your plan makes more sense.

I added to Sawrina's info that she's arriving in this land via Deemethreesu's armada.

I'm going to replace this long post with a direct quote from the book:

Going into this, you won’t have much or any backstory. That’s fine; don’t plan or
speculate. Instead, watch the backstory emerge. Let the characters’ best interests
show you what’s been going on between them up to now. Why are the horsemen
hiding the beautiful girl, for instance? And this includes also any events specified
by the oracle. The marriage of the beautiful girl to the stone effigy: has it already
happened, or is it still to be seen? We won’t know until someone names a best
interest that answers it.

If someone names a best interest for her character and you can’t see it immediately,
you may, if you need to, ask why. Why is that in her best interests? Don’t make this
a challenge, though; if she answers you it’s to help you understand, not because she
must or because she has to win your assent to what she’s said. If she shrugs and says,
“we’ll find out I guess,” you have to content yourself with that. No discussing, no
contradicting, no second-guessing.

At the end, you should have a situation not easily untangled and about to turn
really bad. Some of the characters will be able to achieve their interests, concievably,
but only by fighting and meaning it, and only by taking other characters’ best
interests away. Dedicated rivals, aggressive enemies, and alliances fragile at best.
It’s time to start the game.
The root of the message is that everything will be decided by your Best Interests and how you pursue those interests in play. Don't be afraid to come up with lofty, suicidal, impossible goals. Shoot for the moon. Take down anyone in your way. Forge alliances, betray your allies, crush your enemies. Do whatever you think your character would do to achieve that interest. Would the father of the lunatic soldier with the demon blade want to let him get slaughtered? Would he fight for his son? Would he kill, or be killed? Those are the kind of questions we want to answer in play. That's how we'll develop a web of rivals, alliances, and enemies. You have to fight, and you have to mean it. You might even have to take another character's best interest away. How far will you go to achieve your goals?

That, my dear friends, is how we will create a unique and colorful world and a deep cast of characters to go with it. Happy gaming!

The plan: I have to edit and revise a theoretically 5000 word paper on Swedish phonology. By that I mean I have to write another 2000 words, and THEN edit and revise it, and then pass it off to my peer editor and get it back in time to submit a final draft on Thursday.

I'm going to work on that for most of today. What you guys can do in the meantime is this:

Create a new thread in the Rogue's Gallery with the following title: "Character Name [Ch1]". Make sure to include the [Ch1], brackets and all. Obviously put your character's name in place of "character name".

In that thread, cut and past the following:
Name, title
Covertly dx
Directly dx
For myself dx
For others dx
With love dx
With violence dx
Particular Strength: NAME ONLY (highlight it in red;don't include the description, for brevity's sake).
Best Interests:
  • Lalalala
  • Dadada
Description: Wicked awesome, I mean like, ten feet tall dude.
The above format will let me scan your sheets rapidly and identify the information I need. Your strength is in red, which will jump off the page, and your best interests are bulleted which will let me find them easily. Once you've done this, I will cut and past them into my master document and print 'em out so I can torment you with greater efficiency.

Look for the opening post by the end of the week, gentlepersons!

Croaker, should I include my physical description in the thread now? I had intended to insert it as part of the story, when she was introduced.

Edit: Okay, I put the description up, but I think it sounds more awkward than the narrative form I have saved for the story.

I know the feeling Cheese. Typically I find it's better to put a more expository "clean" form of your character's description in the er...Biography I guess, and save the more fluid prose descriptions for in game.

Cool, that's some pretty good advice. I'll make sure to keep it in mind for next time, since I'm far too lazy to modify it this time.

Also, I can't believe I haven't mentioned this yet, but every single time I read your sig, I literally laugh out loud. It's one of the most hilarious things ever.
