Duel Arcana: Round 4 Match 1

It is day four and two more duelists have fallen and we are down to five.

Once again TarNoch will start out the day. As an Evoker his spells deal with raw power and it was enough to overcome Gimbal, but now he faces a decidedly more deadly Illusionist. I speak of none other than Murwocket Loopnock Nampen, better known as Loopy!

Loopy seems determined to get back on his winning streak so it will be a hard fought duel. One more loss of either and they are out of the Duel Arcana.

Please send me a private message with your prepared spells, spells cast prior to the duel, what you will have in hand, what spell(s) you will cast on the first round, and what action you will take on the 2nd round (either prepare to counterspell or total defense).

Tarnoch enters the ring knowing fully the danger of such a deadly illusionist.
Though the mage does not depend of his God for his spells, he says a devout prayer before entering the arena. Tarnoch cast a few spells on himself prior dead hour in anticipation of the coming threats.

Still seething from yesterday's loss, which shouldn't have been a loss, Loopy enters the ring with a scowl on his face and a mean streak a mile wide. Casting a spell that has yet to be seen in this match, Loopy concentrates on the affinities of fate in the arena and attempts to manipulate them to his advantage.

TarNoch:
HP: 46
Mage Armor, rest of duel
See Invisibility, rest of duel
Contingent Energy Resistance, rest of duel
Lesser Spell Matrix, rest of duel
Nightshield, expires round 91
Pearl in hand

Loopy:
HP: 46 +13
Contingent Energy Resistance, rest of duel
False Life, rest of duel
See Invisibility, rest of duel
Duel Ward, expires round 10

Initiative: TarNoch 1+3=4, Loopy 3+1=4. TarNoch goes first.

Round 1:
TarNoch casts Nightshield
Loopy casts Duel Ward
Round 2:
TarNoch prepares to counterspell Loopy
Loopy goes on Total Defense

TarNoch and Loopy are casting their first spells. Not much to see but they are adding to their already considerable defenses.

A nightshield for TarNoch and, a duel ward for Loopy. Very interesting!

Loopy doesn’t seem prepared for TarNoch’s opening spell!

Just watch.

Flagg, you have 24 hours to post TarNoch’s next action.

One that was closely observing the dwarf's facial expressions may have noticed a slight smirk creep across his moving lips.
The mage approaches Tarnoch fires a spell just for the situation, short and insulting. The evoker then follows with another blast of the weave's raw energy.

[Ooc Move to E7 cast Heightened incite (Swift) followed with Force missiles]

Given the effects of the first spell that TarNoch casts, Loopy has no problem with letting it go unchallenged. His prepratory spell had already taken into account just such an eventuality. He'd just have to be careful about the use of his counterspell, since it was likely the only one he'd get.

Likewise, Loopy has little issue with the second spell that TarNoch casts. The missiles were bound to hurt, but wouldn't be a match ender, and therefore not worth his countering them. Flinching, Loopy prepares to absorb their blow.

HP: 46
Mage Armor, rest of duel
See Invisibility, rest of duel
Contingent Energy Resistance, rest of duel
Lesser Spell Matrix, rest of duel
Nightshield, expires round 91
Pearl in hand

Loopy:
HP: 42
Contingent Energy Resistance, rest of duel
See Invisibility, rest of duel
Duel Ward, expires round 10
Incite, expires round 93

Round 3:
TarNoch casts Heightened Incite as a swift action. Loopy attempts a Will save to resist. 2+12=14 vs. DC 18, fails.
TarNoch casts Force Missiles. Deals 6, 3 and 8 damage to Loopy.

I’m watching. Loopy just got blasted.

Yes, but apparently Loopy didn’t think countering TarNoch’s spells were warranted. Though the incite spell that TarNoch cast would have been a good choice in most spell duels.

Black Plauge, you have 24 hours to post Loopy’s next action.

Straightening up after absorbing the painful missiles, Loopy scowls at his opponent and gives him a mock salute.

"Time to end this."

[OOC: Cast heightened phantasmal killer at TarNoch. Use Fickle Finger of Fate to force TarNoch to reroll any successful save.]

Looks like Loopy is going to unleash his most powerful magic.

A Phantasmal Killer, this is what killed Tsao Tshu last time!

TarNoch is still on his feet! But it looks like it still hurt him.

Better than dead.

Tarnoch unleashes a flurry of mixed arcane energy. Two blasts of multi-hued energy jut forth across the arena in a long line.

[ooc Activate spell matrix Rainbow blast, and follow with another rainbow blast.]

Knowing that his protections cannot even come close to bearing the full brunt of this mixed assult, Loopy decides that a countering attempt is in order.

[OOC: Attempt to counter rainbow blast using dispel magic as an immediate action.]

TarNoch:
HP: 34
Mage Armor, rest of duel
See Invisibility, rest of duel
Contingent Energy Resistance, rest of duel
Nightshield, expires round 91
Pearl in hand

Loopy:
HP: 13
Contingent Energy Resistance (Cold), rest of duel
See Invisibility, rest of duel
Duel Ward, expires round 10
Incite, expires round 93

Round 4:
TarNoch casts Rainbow Blast from his spell matrix. Loopy attempts to counter the spell. Spellcraft check to identify the spell is automatic with a +25 Spellcraft check bonus. Dispel check 8+9=17 vs. DC 20, fails. Rainbow Blast deals 1 Acid, 3 Cold, 2 Electric, 10 Fire, and 7 Sonic damage.
Loopy attempts a reflex save for half damage. 11+6=17 vs. DC 19, fails. Loopy’s Contingent Energy Resistance activates. Rolling randomly to see which type of energy it blocks. 2, Loopy gains Resistance to Cold 10 which absorbs the 3 Cold damage. Loopy takes 20 damage.
TarNoch casts Heighten Rainbow Blast. Deals 9 Acid, 8 Cold, 2 Electric, 4 Fire, and 5 Sonic damage.
Loopy attempts a Reflex save for half damage. 15+6=21 vs. DC 20, success. The Energy Resistance (Cold) absorbs the Cold damage and Loopy takes 4 Acid, 1 Electric, 2 Fire and 2 Sonic damage.

TarNoch has sent not one, but TWO Rainbow Blasts at Loopy.

That’s the way the game is played. Throw your biggest spells at your opponent at fast as possible and try to take them down before they take you down. Did you see Loopy’s attempt to counter the first blast?

It was a pretty fast exchange and it looked like he took the brunt of the blast while he was trying to counter it. The second one he just jumped out of the way and it looks that that was more effective.

Black Plauge, you have 24 hours to post Loopy’s next action.

Ouch! Damnit! Even with a potion I can't take that much punishment again. I have to end this now.

"Let's try this again now, shall we? Die!"

[OOC: Cast phantasmal killer. Use spin to up DC to 27. Get out a potion.]

Loopy retrieves a potion.

TarNoch was not able to knock Loopy out and now it Loopy is casting again.

Another Phantasmal Killer, we will see if TarNoch can hold out once again.

Yes he can! TarNoch is still on his feet and appears completely unaffected.

Suprised to see his opponent still on his feet, Loopy desperately tries to counter the latest volley and so to extend this match just a bit further.

Unfortunately Loopy can not seem to make his spells take hold on the resilient dwarf.

He has been throwing solid spells at TarNoch, but the Dwarven resilience to spells and the nightshield that TarNoch had cast up at the beginning of the duel are proving difficult to overcome.

Note: TarNoch does not have a Rainbow Blast spell available to casts and I have not heard back from Flagg in over 24 hours. He will instead take the default action of preparing to counterspell.

TarNoch:
HP: 34
Mage Armor, rest of duel
See Invisibility, rest of duel
Contingent Energy Resistance, rest of duel
Nightshield, expires round 91
Pearl in hand

Loopy:
HP: 13
Contingent Energy Resistance (Cold), rest of duel
See Invisibility, rest of duel
Incite, expires round 93
Potion in hand

Round 6:
TarNoch prepares to counterspell Loopy.

What’s TarNoch doing now? He isn’t casting, he is just staring at Loopy.

Maybe he is just playing with Loopy now? That could be a serious mistake.

Black Plauge, you have 24 hours to post Loopy’s next action.

Taking a mental inventory of the spells both he and his opponent have cast, Loopy comes to the conclusion that they're both running close to empty on their most powerful spells. Not quite empty, but fairly close, and if his opponent didn't have anymore attack spells in those slots, as his inaction suggested, then Loopy might be able to win the match another way.

Drawing his glaive, Loopy casts a spell to make himself proficent with the weapon and moves towards his opponent. He has no chance of closing the whole gap, but once he gets about halfway, he tries to ready himself to cast his last strong protective spell, hoping to get it up at just the right time. The spell his opponent had cast on him at the begining of the match prevents him, however, so he quickly switches spells, not willing to give his opponent a chance to counterspell what could very well be the match winning spell at this point.

If he got to cast it, that is.

[OOC: Draw glaive. Cast master's touch to gain proficency with glaive (eliminating the -4 non-proficency penalty and raising Loopy's attack bonus with the weapon to +3). Move to I7. Cast bear's endurance gaining a +4 Con and 18 hp.]

Note: Modified the order of Loopy’s actions so that he can perform them all.

TarNoch:
HP: 34
Mage Armor, rest of duel
See Invisibility, rest of duel
Contingent Energy Resistance, rest of duel
Nightshield, expires round 91
Pearl in hand

Loopy:
HP: 31
Contingent Energy Resistance (Cold), rest of duel
See Invisibility, rest of duel
Incite, expires round 93
Bear’s Endurance (+4 Con), expires round 96
Glaive in hand

Round 6:
Loopy moves and draws his glaive; he must drop his potion to do so. Loopy casts Master’s Touch. TarNoch attempts to counter with Dispel Magic. Spellcraft check vs. DC 16 is automatic with a bonus of +20. Dispel check, 16+9=25 vs. DC 20, success.
Loopy casts Bear’s Endurance.

Loopy is closing for hand-to-hand combat. Not something I expected to see.

He cast a couple spells to give himself a better chance. Master’s Touch and Bear’s Endurace, but TarNoch managed to counter the first one.

Tarnoch tosses a few fire ants in his mouth after stepping closer to his now armed opponent. The dwarf belches forth a cone of acidic fog that engulfs his opponent. The dwarf drops his pearl and retrieves his quarterstaff from his pack, finding the thought of melee remotely endearing.

[ooc 5-foot step to F7 cast acid breath, drop pearl and move action to retreive staff]

An Acid Breath spell. Good for discouraging foes from getting close.
