Issue Six - Looking Glass house

"If I hadn't seen it myself, I'd swear you've never played before."

Paul's taunts have grown after 83 consecutive wins in Halo 3 against all comers. Only Hardball and Nick continue to try and beat him. He even carefully slows his speech while reading Simulcra and Simulation on one of the Kindles he had found. It had seemed just a stunt until he quoted out loud, "Therefore, pretending, or dissimulating leaves the principle of reality intact: the difference is always clear, it is simply masked, whereas simulation threatens the difference between the 'true' and the 'false', the 'real' and the 'imaginary'" while zigzagging down a long hallway dodging Hardball's fire ultimately placing a sticky grenade on Hardball's back then turning the corner before it exploded

All in all it has been a rough couple of days confined with Paul. His sit and breathe spells last for half an hour at most. He can't bear to just watch television and only watches video at 3x fast forward with closed captioning. Then again it has been just a rough couple of days. The after effects of the Widow's spells have kept pretty much everyone to themselves with the migraine quality headaches, random visual hallucinations, synesthesia and the inexplicable bouts of nausea. It's only been the last few hours maybe 30 who can tell without a window in the place that they'd all felt well enough to start playing around.

32 hours, 13 minutes, and 35 seconds since Paul felt well enough. The apartment is 3512 square feet of high end decor with no outlets except for the elevator door where room service comes from the automatons. Paul had been creeped out by them at first. They looked like moving impressionistic clay statues of people. After 17 calls to room service and the automatons obvious obedience and quiet dignity throughout they started to just seem part of the place. Majestic brocaded curtains conceal 42" wide screen televisions in each of the four bedrooms. There are nine Kindles and 16 Ipods and 1823 stations on the 48" television in the great room.

No internet connection. Paul feels like an amputee. All this and still not good enough. He feels ungrateful briefly but that too passes and he begins trying to make sense of the Hell they had just been through. Nightwind has been meditating trying to find inspiration or something before she will try to teach them. Beating the jocks at video games grows unsatisfying by itself so he eventually he settles on two Kindles. One houses reference documents with the complete Oxford English Dictionary It's the only one they have in English. The entries are over 1,000 words. I miss dictionary.com. The other with a selection of philosophy treatises from which he quoted Beaudrillard.

"So She inserts a simulation into our head or does she simply take over one of the simulations we are running ourselves? Is it right to say my fears and desires are simulations I am running? What does I mean then? Am I even making any sense?" Paul says then scampers up a narrow ledge to a jump accelarator shooting Nick with a rocket launcher before he lands.

"Dude," Hardball says,"where's the health shield?"

"Thirdeveltotherightoftheshieldedentrancebeforethe waterfall," Paul replies.

"Slow down. Third level where?"

"To...the...right...of...the...shielded...entrance ...before...the...waterfall...where...Nick...is. Should regen in 25 secs now"

"So not helpful"

"Butseriously," Paul takes a deep breath, "Aren't my hopes and fears just me I mean if they're separatable and can be used against me then what is me?"

"It's magic, dude, who knows how it works?"

"Polnoch would, but we need to figure things out for ourselves I think."

"Then keep reading. Did you read Sarte yet?"

"Not yet."

"Nothing seemed true; I felt surrounded by cardboard scenery which could quickly be removed"

Paul stops and looks at Hardball.

"I'm not just a pretty face. Prof Reagan was hot, and she liked to quote from it."

Nick blows both Paul and Hardball away with a rocket launcher. "Yes!"

"Dude!"

"Suckers!"

Starfire sits in the room she shares with Nightwind, legs crossed in a half lotus, eyes closed, meditating.

At least it looks like she's meditating. The truth is that she'd been trying to meditate all morning, but had finally given up a short while ago. Apparently, meditation is not her thing. Now she is just pretending to meditate, to keep up appearances, while her thoughts jump around from one thing to another.

How can those guys play video games for hours at a time?

It's so boring... She wishes she could go outside for a while. Sure, they've got a great place here and it's really comfortable. But she'd rather jog at the park than on a treadmill. And even though she loves hanging out and watching TV with the guys, it's starting to get old. She had just begun to go out to clubs with some of the girls from work before the mission to rescue Nightwind had come up. She'd love to go out dancing tonight!

I wonder... can any of them dance?

She's thinking about the guys, of course. Hard not to when they're cooped up together. And they're all pretty cute. A smile touches the corners of her mouth and her color heightens slightly as she imagines a night out on the town with the Five Hunky Heroes. Hardball and Nick... she can totally see herself dancing with one of them. Paul? The secret smile widens. Trying to keep up with him would make her head spin but it could be fun! Collin? She's not sure she can picture him dancing at all - after all, he's The Shadow. And what about Jack?

My mother would hate Jack. Just like she always hated Jerry.

Her smile vanishes. Why think about Jerry now? Or her mother, for that matter? The two people in her life who had always found a way to demean or hurt her. She had finally been able to put Jerry out of her mind and think about maybe dating again before the mission. Then Widow had to come along with her mind games and fuck everything up.

Starfire feels herself starting to get hot.

Widow and her demons!

It is still difficult to wrap her mind around what had happened back there, but it irks her to think how easily Widow was able to defeat her. The demon bitch! She used Jerry against her, brought him back with his baseball bat and his hateful words, and used him to take her power away. She did the same thing to all of them, one way or another. And now they are stuck here until they figure out a way to keep her from doing it again. Stuck with nothing to do.

I need to get out of this place!

Starfire is really feeling hot now, her skin is starting to itch the way it does when...

Oh no!

She opens her eyes and looks down at her hands resting palm up on her knees. Little tendrils of flame are flickering above her white-hot fingertips. She jumps to her feet and shakes her hands, still unsure of how to go about controlling these surprise manifestations of her power. But she needn't have panicked. A little concentration is all it takes and the flames are extinguished. At least she hadn't caught her bed on fire.

Thank God!

Starfire looks around but it doesn't seem that anyone else noticed what happened. The guys are still playing video games. Nightwind is meditating (really meditating) in one of the other rooms. So... now what? A yoga workout? Turn on the TV and see what's on? Naw... She sits down in the half lotus again. Back to pretending to meditate.

If we did all go out to a club sometime, which one of them would ask me to dance first?

Well, daydreams are all she has for now.

Jack eyed the cylinder of his mattress as he would a mortal enemy. Stripped to the waist, sweat oiling his body, he slides to the right, dropping that hand down before launching a sudden attack, his wiry muscles fluidly relaxing and then contracting as he lands a powerful roundhouse. Wrapped inside the mattress, the heavy oaken bookcase shudders under the impact. He takes a step back, still on guard, dark eyes focused on nothing.

It had been a hard couple of days for him, closeted in relative proximity to people for the first time in a long time. He'd always kept to himself - when he was young, he'd had little choice. As he grew there was always a gulf that separated him from his peers - something in his outlook that made him different from those around him. An old soul, he'd heard his mother say once when she thought he couldn't hear. Maybe it was true. He'd been through more tragedy and loss in his short life than folks three times his age.

So he avoided the games the others played to pass the time, despite the fact that he might give even Paul a run for his money. Too much time spent playing computer crap he'd been bought as a child, back when that was all people could do for a poor kid with a crippling illness. He wasn't that sick kid anymore but he'd never be normal, never be able to live in the world he'd always looked in on.

It hadn't taken Jack very long to catch himself staring at the liquor cabinet in their small room, where he had spent his down time the first day or so reading one of the many kindles that were lying around - biology, mostly - hoping to come up with some scientific explanation for what the Widow could do. In a moment of clarity (or stupidity) he'd dumped each and every bottle down the drain and then scrubbed out the sink. He wasn't sure if he regretted the decision or not. If Paul noticed, he didn't say anything.

After that, he spent some time sparring with Colin. Jack had seen him sweat, otherwise he'd would've sworn the guy was a machine. His technique was flawless, and he moved with a speed and precision that was truly impressive. Good workouts, really, at least for him. And they didn't talk much, which seemed to suit them both, although he wouldn't say they'd really bonded there.

Which left Jack where he was now. He tried not to think about the girls, tried not to think about what it might mean for them to be cooped up here with him. He was a danger to them all, he supposed, but the girls always brought his mind back to Elizabeth.

The carpet deadened the sound of his fists against the makeshift heavy bag. He circled and pounded, then again, harder, as the skin on his knuckles started to bleed. Beneath the thick mattress, he felt the oak snap, saw the red imprints of his fists, bloodily stamped across the canvas. The whole thing sagged, then crumpled to the ground leaving Jack standing alone, chest heaving, looking for something else to fight.

Here, though, there was nothing to fight, nowhere to run. There was only the knowledge that his life had changed once again, and once again he was so very far from where he'd been and still no closer to where he wanted to be.

A long way from a sick kid.

A long way from anything normal.

"So totally PWNED! With a capital "P"."

"Dude, seriously?"

"What's the matter tin-man can't take the heat?" Nick chides back.

*BING*

The elevator softly chimes from across the room.

"JEESUS PAUL!"

Paul had stood and turned so quickly that it was like he simply appeared.

"Dude its just the elevator," Hardball adds as he snakes a power up.

"Ididn'thearitcoming."

"Huh?" both jocks crane their necks toward the opening doors.

Polnoch.

A weak smile comes to the European's face as he sees the boys. A face paler, and heavier than any of them remember.

"Ah, I see you found the video games," he says as he steps out of the elevator, the silver and ebony cane in his right hand clicking loudly.

Paul zips to the old man's side with a broad smile, "It'sgoodtoseeyou."

"Thank you Paul," he says, giving Paul's shoulder a squeeze. "Its so very good to see you."

Hardball stands up slowly (experience had taught him not to make any sudden movements above ground floors when in his current form) and greets Polnoch with a silver smile. "We all stayed. Just like you asked. So what's up?"

"Well I just thought that after a few days cooped up in here you boys might be wanting to get out," he pulls out a dark cigarette and before he can put it to his lips Paul has a lighter out and lit. "Then again," he says wry smoky smile "the rooms are yours as long as you'd like."

"So that's really it?" Hardball looks mildly puzzled, as if he's waiting for the catch. "Just like that? We can go home? What about Widow? What happens to Nightwind now, or the rest of us for that matter?"

Paul doesn't wait. He's already back from his room tucking in his newly pressed shirt, straightening his green silk tie, and putting on the suit jacket the golems had repaired this morning. He smiles broadly with a jittery anxiousness to be on the move now that the all clear has been given.

Jack, showered now, manages not to jump as the door flies open and Paul flits around the room before zipping out again a moment later. The wash of air from Paul's hummingbird passage stirs his dark hair and brings with it the rich odor of tobacco from the room beyond, so familiar. The door has only just closed when he yanks it open again to see the others gathered before Polnoch, his face holding traces of a smile. He stops outside the edge of the circle, waiting for the man to continue the explanation he had obviously been in the middle of.

"When you're a god, nothing is ever simple," he says taking another drag. "If you wish to return to a normal life, I can craft for you a completely different identity, as I did for Gabriella, and I can also shroud you mystically to help safe guard against Widow finding you. I would provide you with enough money and possessions to ensure that you could live comfortably.

"Of course, this would mean that you would have to live as a normal, and try to fit into their world.

"And our other option?" Nick pipes in, his arms crossed and his gut tightening.

"You have more than just two options," Polnoch says with a smile. "You could live the rest of your life with in the safe confines of normality, that's one choice. You could publicly reveal your identities and become full time heroes, that's another choice. Then there's the whole spectrum of choices in between. Just know that whatever you choose, I will will be there to support you."

"We've done some talking while you were gone," Hardball says matter-of-factly as he meets Polnoch's smile. "We just saved a bunch of people. That felt pretty good. We're committed to seeing where this goes. Whatever fallout there is from our match with the Widow, we'll deal with it together.

"There are a couple of things you could do for us. First, we need some help figuring out how to deal with the Widow's mind whammy. Can you train us to keep her out of our heads?

"And second, we could use someplace where we can train. Depending on where it is, some or all of us might even need to live there. After giving it some thought, I think we should have a beach house somewhere. With a private beach. You know. For training. And stuff."

"Something in between... That sounds good to me." Starfire had hung back in the doorway of her room, just listening to what the others had to say until now. She looks at Hardball. "I want to stay with you guys. But I want the freedom to come and go as I please.

"And I don't want to be a public hero," she adds turning toward Polnoch. The look on her face makes it plain that she wants no part of being in the public eye. "I like the beach house idea though." She laughs. "Am I asking too much?"

With an eye to Jack, Paul address Polnoch in with deliberate pacing and a serious demeanor, "We should also acquire a lab and computers too. Jack's been doing some biological research, and as Maimonides says in the Guide for the Perplexed a previous knowledge of logic and Natural Philosophy are indispensable for further study."

"Of course," Polnoch says grinning broadly. "If you're willing, Luscinia has offered to train you herself, and I can offer a suitably private location to conduct that training. Although," he adds with a puff of smoke "I will be lacking in beach access."

"Hey," Hardball says with a smile, "it was worth a try."

"Good, its settled then. Now lets get you out of here, I have a surprise for you."

"So what are you guys up to?" Starfire calls from sunny patio, her swimsuit clinging to the full curves of her cocoa-butter lathered skin like a jealous lover. A cool sea-breezes slips through the stands of distant marram grass, down the sleepy streets of Cagnes-sur-mer and over the seven hundred year old stones that made up the patio's wall.

"If they say video-games I swear I'm going to ninja kick each of them in the head," Nightwind mutters from the next chair over.

Starfire stifles a giggle and stretches out her legs to catch more of the sun.

"I've been giving this some thought," Hardball says as he walks outside and settles up gainst the patio wall. He runs a hand through his hair, still tousled and damp from a day at the beach, as his tanned muscles ripple in the warm glow of the setting sun. It feels good to feel again. He had disliked spending so much time in his armored form, but his injuries had pretty much demanded it.

"Let's all go to Monaco," he continues. "It'll be fun. There's casinos and dancing and all sorts of stuff to do there. There's something for everyone. The Exotic Gardens are supposed to be a kick ass hike. And there's an Oceanographic Museum and Aquarium. They have all sorts of galleries and shopping. Did I mention the casinos? Aw, c'mon. Who doesn't want to pretend to be in a James Bond movie?

"Ball," he says with his best Sean Connery accent. "Hard Ball."

Nightwind dips her chin and appraises Hardball with an arched eyebrow, her sea blue eyes glittering impishly over the black plastic of her Ray-ban sunglasses.

"Monaco."

"Yes. Monaco." Hardball's Connery was improving.

"Monaco?" she asks Starfire with a shrug.

"You'll love it. Come on," Paul appears out of no where in a Louis Vuitton white cotton canvas suit, champagne oxfords, and Montblanc sunglasses.

"I thought you weren't joining us until tomorrow."

Paul shrugs, his form wavers with the motion. "Trains are nice, but they went through Grenoble. I was in Genéve this morning. Had to see CERN so I thought I'd go south and see le Parc du Mercantur as well."

He sets down the calfskin computer bag slung over his shoulder. "Anyone want anything to eat?" he calls out from the kitchen.

"Yeah, I'm gonna pass on Monaco," Jack says quietly, the scene playing out in his mind. Gambling, booze, drugs, women - all work and no play might make for an unhappy boy but it was better than a grinning idiot time-bomb. "I've got a date with Rome - promised my Dad I'd see the home country some day. Probably still have some relatives there somewhere, not that I'll be looking anybody up."

"You sure, Jack?" The man needs his space, I guess. Hardball raises an eyebrow before directing his attention to Paul in the kitchen and rewinding the last 10 seconds in his mind. "Huh? Louis Vuitton? Nice." He nods in approval. "Um. Do we have any of that melon or pineapple left?"

“Well I’m in.” Nick chimes in enthusiastically. “You think they will let me across the border on bike?” The Ducati he had rented was not as comfortable a cruising bike as his softail but it was fast and fun to ride.

"Why wouldn't they?" Hardball ribs Nick. "Is it made out of drugs or something?"

"Rome's not that much further. Maybe we should just go there with Jack? Does that sound better to you Starfire?" says Paul holding out a tray of fruit to Hardball. "You should try the Emmentaler," he adds nodding to the cheese.

"That's a good point. I know you like your privacy, Jack, but if Monaco isn't your speed, I'm sure we could all find something to do in Rome." Hardball takes a piece of cheese from the tray. "Oh, hey. That is good. Thanks, Paul." Then back to Jack, "Nobody should have to vacation in Europe alone."

"I don't know..." Starfire finally stirs in her chaise lounge, sitting up to gaze out at the distant haze where the azure of the sky and the sea meet. "Monaco sounds fun - shopping, and exotic gardens, and casinos." Her eyes are bright as she grins at Hardball, but then she glances over at Jack with a look of concern for his somber mood. Something is eating at him, that seems certain.

"Um, then there's Rome... What does Rome have again? Besides the Pope!" She laughs good-naturedly, hoping that Jack will at least smile at her joke. "Oh OK, I'm not very funny. I guess if you promised your dad, you can't go back on your word. And I'm sure they have casinos in Rome too. Er, right?"

"Mmm," Hardball thinks for a second. "No. Gambling is banned in Italy." There is a glimmer in his eye as he continues. "But my special Hardball Sense *is* detecting someone in desperate need of a good time." He holds one hand to his forehead while closing his eyes. "It's... You!" He points to Jack. "Even now, I can hear your psychic cry (as his voice jumps an octave), "Please, Hardball. Don't let me go to Rome! Take me to Monaco where life is shiny and fun!" Hardball leaps to his feet and places his fists on his hips. He throws his head back and (in his normal voice) exclaims, "Sir, we hear your unspoken plea, and we are for you."

"Hey!" Nick shouts as Hardball snatches the sunglasses he is wearing.

Hardball puts on Nick's sunglasses and extends a hand to Jack. "Come with me if you want to live," he says in an impression closer to William Shatner than Arnold Schwartzenegger He holds the pose as he awaits Jack's response.

Starfire giggles. "Yeah, Jack. Come on!"

Jack drums his fingers on the door jamb, eyes moving between the irrepressible Hardball and the irresistible Dani, his face unreadable. There wasn't anything in Rome that wouldn't wait . . .

"Alright, alright - I'll go if it will get you to lay off the bad impersonations," he replies, cracking a smile. His eyes linger on Starfire for a moment more before he heads over to the kitchen and grabs a bottle of water. As he tilts the bottle up and lets the cold liquid slide down his throat he tells himself that it'll be fine. It's all under control now.

The ring tone versions of Hella good chirps from Kat's handbag, its infectious beat sending heads a bobbing.

"Hello?" she manages, her tanning oil slicked fingers still fumbling with the sleek plastic. Immediately the warm smile fades from her face, and her brows begin to furrow.

"Yeah...unh-huh...sure... No its ok... I'll be right there...Yeah...bye." With a sigh she clicks the phone shut. Already her swimsuit was changing into a comfortable pair of jeans and a t-shirt.

"That was P - You guys will have to hit Monaco without me."

Looking up from the laptop he'd pulled from its calfskin case, Paul asks with deliberate pacing, "Are you on call for a mission? Do you want backup, Nightwind? How is Polnoch?"

Even with his large eyes still hidden behind sunglasses and the ceaseless staccato of his fingers on the keys, Paul seems an eager puppy ready to jump into action.

Jack watches Nightwind's face during the conversation, her eyebrows arching prettily when she frowns. Super powers and looks to match - all of them, really. Lately he had taken to sarcastically wondering who would be featured on the cover of which magazine.

"Yeah, what's up?"

He hadn't forgotten that she was the reason they were here. If Polnoch wanted her then something was going on, and it might well be something they ought to know about too.

"Its ahhh....I can't believe I'm saying this....a magic thing. P wants to see Collin and I, and was unsurprisingly vague on the details," the athletic blonde adds as she floats to her feet. "Its probably just more sitting around contemplating our navels or something," she gives Paul's shoulder squeeze as she walks by to Collin's room.

"Wow," Hardball speaks in low tones as he watches Nightwind disappear into Colin's room. "I dare them to make less sense. But if she's with Colin and P, then I guess at least she's safe, right? I mean, they're magic."

Jack stares after her, the nonchalance of it all sending up warning flares.

"I don't like it. Polnoch gave us a vacation. If he's yanking Colin and Kat then it's more than just ruminations on theurgy."

Of course, actually doing anything about it was another thing. Somehow he didn't think either of them would want the rest of the group tagging along - clearly Polnoch didn't. Or maybe he was just being paranoid. Prague had been in his dreams a lot lately.

"You're right," Hardball says. "We all get tapped to save the girl. Well, there was a sort of mutual saving at the end, but you get the idea. The day is saved. The girl asks us to stick with her because she doesn't feel safe. Which we do, 'cause we're a team. But now she's suddenly called away for some urgent secret business and she's suddenly not concerned for her own safety at all? That makes no sense. The question is, what do we do about it?"

“You know as well as I do there isn’t much of anything we can do.” Nick says not waiting for Hardball to answer his own question. “I don’t like it anymore than you do. We just have to trust in our teammates. That’s what you do when you’re a team. Pausing a moment he continues “I’m thinking Monaco is a bust though I don’t think I’m going to be much in the mood for fun not knowing what’s going on.”

With a flicker of annoyance and a flurry of white, Paul cancels the train ticket purchase, scribbles on a hotel notepad, stands, packs the notebook back into its satchel and steps to the door. Polnoch's words running through his mind: Reduced to its simplest essence an agent is one who acts or has the ability to act. Building on that, it is a person who is able to make manifest their will. Too many people allow others to dictate their life...shape their perceptions of reality.

Propped against the suite exit brushing lint from his jacket a teenaged melancholy smile between his outsized ears he says in slow for him bursts behind the protection his shades, "Polnoch has my number. Left it on the table too. Not sitting here waiting for the call. Nightwind's got hers. I guess ours will come in time."

Pausing for an entire second he looks them over one by one. "Call me." The door closes with a gentle click behind him.

"Kid's got a point," Hardball muses as the door shuts behind Paul. "Nightwind's made her choice, and it's not like she won't be safe with Polnoch and Colin." He talks out loud to nobody in particular as he walks to his room.

"I'm gonna go pack my stuff," he says as he disappears through the door. "I still want to see Monaco. If any of you want to come with me, cool. If not, I'll see you once training starts."

“Hey Colin,” Nightwind’s lilting voice comes from the back of the suite. “Wakey, wakey, eggs and ba….” The splintering of wood punctuated by a loud thump ends her sentence. Nightwind rockets backwards, her lithe form folded into a ball. Her swimming suit flows like ink across her skin, sheathing her back in bio armor an instant before she plows through the interior wall. Two-by-four studs snap like matchsticks and powdered drywall hangs in the air like a gypsum fog as her unconscious form rockets towards the thick brick exterior.

Suddenly Paul is there in a flurry of white linen. He reaches to catch the stunned heroine, but her momentum proves too great for him to simply stop. With a grunt he redirects her energy into a roll that sends them both tumbling across the warm Italian tile. Confusion blossoms in the suite as the others rush forward to help.

In an oily flash of shadow Colin is there, eyes black and dead. He drops and grabs Nightwind’s foot, a wicked smile cuts across his face and the three of them disappear.

Starfire staggers forward, blinking in surprise at the swirling cloud of plaster dust where Nightwind and Colin had been just a moment before. The attack had been so sudden, so unexpected--

Attack? Who attacked? Colin attacked Nightwind???

Confusion makes her feel numb, then hot anger starts to take control. Her entire body trembles with the effort to remain calm.

"What the hell just happened?"

"What the hell?" Hardball asks as he runs back into the room. "Is everyone OK out here?"

"Son of a whore!"

Jack stops his sprint forward when the three wink out of sight.

Shit. Colin.

No, not Colin. The Shadow. His brain clicks furiously through several scenarios. He decides almost instantly on the only possible explanation - The Widow had gotten to him. He freezes and holds up one hand, listening intently, not knowing if they were hidden or gone, hoping he could hear something to point him in the right direction.

Starfire is too upset to keep still.

"Hardball, did you see it, did you see what happened?" She turns to their leader, the one who always seemed to know what the next step should be. "I can't believe he did it! We have to-- I don't know... Call Polnoch! Oh Christ, where's the fucking phone?"

She looks around frantically, finally spotting the phone on the table where Nightwind left it. But before she can even try to punch in Polnoch's number, the handset rings. She hits the talk button.

"Hello?"

Hardball wills the change that transforms him into living metal. "In case Colin decides to come back." He keeps his voice low as Starfire answers the phone.

Jack nods at Hardball, trying hard not to think about what might happen if Colin returned. From their sparring sessions Jack knew all too well what the man was capable of and the idea of turning his power on a teammate . . .

It would be an eerie reminder of the vision induced by the Widow, if enough time had passed to dull the edge of that particular horror. Instead it was just sickening.

He focuses on Starfire's half of the conversation, placating himself with the fact that at present time, Colin wasn't here. Time enough to burn that bridge when - and if - he got to it.

"What happened?"

Polnoch.

Relieved by the sound of his voice, Starfire relaxes her grip on the phone just in time to keep from turning it into a puddle of melted plastic.

"It was Colin!" she says into the receiver breathlessly. "He attacked Nightwind! I mean, I guess that's what happened. She came flying through the wall here, and Paul caught her. Then Colin showed up, and all three of them disappeared!

"What do you want us to do? We- "

A sudden thought occurs to her.

"Polnoch, how did you know something happened here?"

"Just because I'm not there, that doesn't mean I'm not looking after you," he says in a calming voice. "Now I need you to relax Gabriella, and take a deep breath. We don't want you melting the phone, OK?"

"Don't worry. I'm all right." Starfire takes a long, slow breath. "The guys are here - Nick and Jack and Hardball. I'm going to put you on speaker." She sets the phone down on the table and steps back.

"Now, does anybody have any idea where Colin would have gone or why he would do this?"

"Many of us battle our inner demons; Colin's demons - or more precisely demon - is real. Colin is a prison for a powerful entity known as Xarum Shae, an entity that until now he has been able to keep under control. Where he has gone I will shortly know. As to the why, I suspect that Xarum Shae plans on using Nightwind to bargain for its freedom."

More demons? Jack is beginning to wonder how he never stumbled on them before now.

"Great. He's going to sell her to the Widow?"

They needed to know where, and they needed to know now. Jack recalls Paul's speech and his departure - and with that he goes and snatches up the speedster's cell number from the table where he'd left it for Polnoch. He punches the number into his own phone, wondering if anyone would answer.

"Whoa, wait a minute... What did you say?" Starfire stares around the room in disbelief. "Colin had a demon living inside of him. And nobody thought it was a good idea to tell the rest of us?

"Hardball, did you know about this?"

"Yeah," Hardball replies in a sort of surprised tone. "We all did. He... it... whatever... told us back at the Widow's place. Remember?"

"Hey," he says holding Starfire's shoulders, "Look at me."

Starfire looks up at the metal titan, her clear blue eyes still doe-eyed and frightened.

"It's going to be all right," he reassures her softly. We're going to fix this." He looks across the room to the speaker phone with Polnoch on the other end. "What do you want us to do?"
