With an air of calm, Sigrid stood, giving Malachai a meaningful glance, then smiled at Cornelius.
"Mr. Salazar, the world is, for the most part, mild. In some ways, though, that only makes it harder to prepare for those parts that are not. As we say up north, take care on a lake well frozen."

Ullr, still retching and unable to shout or even breathe really, still maintained the presence of mind to draw his bow, and stomp as loudly as possible to try to make sure to get the attention of people elsewhere in the building. He glanced around the room quickly, spewing up black gunk, and got a quick look at the force arrayed against them. Despite the coughing getting in his way, he was able to load an arrow and launch it directly at his target.

Malachi swiftly stood and moved toward the door. He cracked it open to gauge just how much a disturbance was taking place outside, a dagger appearing in his hand as he moved.

Aleph coughed but his sword still found his hand and the distance between him and the nearest of the assassins vanished in a heartbeat. The thrust clanged against the other man's curved sword, a powerful stroke but not a killing blow.

Despite closing with only one of the enemy, Aleph's eyes wandered as he surveyed the scene. The secret to not dying was not to allow anybody to saunter off and stab you in the back.

Miltos saw one of the assassins sprout an arrow, and the Aleph charged forward to slash at one of the others. The bravo really wanted to be in the thick of the fray, but didn't really want to get stuck behind the enemy front, so he settled for a movement forward and a quck thrust to the one with the arrow, seeking to put down one enemy quickly and hopefully shorten the odds a bit. He shifted his stance slightly and suddenly his rapier was in hand. Miltos pirouetted forward, his blade flashing in the dim light of the bank. As soon as he was in range, he attempted to skewer the reeling assassin, and then flipped back out of the way before he could take any damage.

"Now, sir, if you'll excuse me..."
She turned, looking at Malachi, her face souring a little, then sighed and pushed past, twirling her pike as she advanced, facing the Snakes. Coils. Whatever.
"So what's this about?"

The Coils froze for a moment, seemingly caught off guard by a display of resistance after their dramatic opening move. The moment passed as Aleph crashed into the nearest of them, who only raised her blade in time to avoid losing a head.

With a unified hiss, the Coils fanned out and moved into the defender's line just as Sigrid bolstered it. One took an arrow from Ullr and a harried strike from Miltos before impaling himself on the Rouva's pike. If they thought their brother's sacrifice would slow Sigrid down they were mistaken - she quickly wrenched back to punish other Coils for their attempts to encircle the group. They closed anyway. One savaged Aleph with lightning quick strikes while others attempted to corner Ullr. Another lashed out at Sigrid, connecting uselessly against thick plate and cursing in a thick, foreign tongue.

The hissing continued unabated - some shook a free hand, somehow conjuring an unnerving rattling. Whether this was meant to intimidate or distract was uncertain.

[Malachi pulls a dagger out and opens the door.

Aleph charges Adder #2 and hits, dealing 14 points of damage.

Miltos tumbles to Adder #1 and strikes once, dealing 14 points of damage. Tumbles back to starting position.

Ullr draws bow, does archer stuff, shoots Adder #1, dealing 16 points of damage.

Sigrid moves into chamber, extends reach.

Cobra #1 moves to square behind Aleph, provoking from Sigrid. AoO hits for 14 - 3 = 11 points of damage. Attacks Aleph, misses.

Cobra #2 double moves.

Snakes in a Bank - Round 2

Adder #1 attempts to close with Sigrid, who takes AoO (which hits). Dies.

Adder #2 takes a 5' step and executes full attack on Aleph. Threatens on first attack (total attack roll - 39), confirms (total confirmation roll - 36), for 23 - 1 = 22 points of damage. Aleph's Fortitude save vs. poison is successful. Second attack hits (total attack roll - 29) for 19 - 3 = 16 points of damage. Total of 7 points of damage were from sneak attack.

Adder #3 double moves (stays outside Sigrid's threatened space) to square adjacent to Ullr.

Adder #4 attempts to tumble to square adjacent to Sigrid. Tumble - 34. Base attack from Sigrid - 34 (success). Sigrid's AoO hits, dealing 8 points of damage. Base attack from Aleph - 23 (failure). Readies action.

Adder #5 double moves to square adjacent to Ullr (now flanking with Adder #3).

Adder #6 double-moves to square adjacent to Sigrid (Tumbles on last square, but no AoOs are left to provoke so I didn't resolve it). Now flanking with Adder #4, who takes readied action, attacking Sigrid. Hits (total attack roll - 30), dealing 9 - 9 = 0 points of damage. Since it does no damage I'm assuming it also doesn't trigger the poison effect. Adder #6 cusses a bit.

Malachi's turn.

Ullr finally manages to clear his throat and steps towards his ally to avoid the obvious trap his foes are attempting to place him in. He fires off a barrage of arrows, his eyes narrowed and focused on the task at hand. Four of the lightning fast attacks strike home. Ullr's eyes narrow further when he realizes the final attack missed.

Aleph was surrounded and bleeding. That would not do. In the chaos of battle Aleph was a beacon of control. He dropped to a crouch and brought his shield up high, as he lowered himself he turned around to face the most dangerous of the three men around him. His sword traced a terrible arc through the two lackeys at his back and he pressed forwards with a lunge. It should have been a masterpiece of swordplay, but the man made it look everyday and free of any theatre. This was simply killing and that was what Aleph excelled at.

Lashing out with his shield to buy space, the man returned to a more controlled position and locked eyes with the remaining rogue.

Miltos slid behind one of the adders that had swarmed Sigrid. She was apparently not one to be trifled with. Indeed, Miltos was feeling mighty weak since he hadn't managed to take down anyone while Sigrid and Aleph had combined to take down three of the assassins. The bravo's ire was up, now, and his blade flashed left and right between two enemies. Seeing the blood pour from the first lesser armored assassin, Miltos concentrated his last two attacks at one of the obvious leaders, doing his best to sneak his blade in between the robber's armor.

"I suppose I'm going to have to get my hands dirty after all," Malachi murmured. He fell into a controlled roll and came up with his dagger slicing up for the assassins groin.

Aleph knew this kind of fight well - brutal hand-to-hand combat, with the points of interest no further away than the reach of his blade. Blood already spilled across the fine marble floor, threatening to slip an unwary foot. Even as he, the Rouva and the blademaster tore the Coils apart they took wounds, but there was no thought amongst them but to press on, and bring their foes low. He caught a glimpse of Ullr feathering another assassin, and the good captain entering the room with an artful tumble and a flash of steel that turned crimson as he nearly eviscerated an unwary Coil.

Sigrid was the first to hear commotion erupting on the far side of the bank, but no one was in any position to see down the connecting hallway. What little she could hear sounded like another pitched battle.

[Malachi tumbles to Adder #5 (success vs. base attack from Cobra #2 to tumble past, success via Adder #5 to deny active defense). Threatens but fails to confirm (1 hit).

Aleph lays about, striking Adders #2, #4, and Cobra #1 (3 hits total).

Miltos takes a 5' step, takes full attack on Adder #6 (one hit) and Cobra #2 (two hits).

Ullr take a 5' step and then takes a full attack on Adder #3 (4 hits).

Sigrid executes a devastating Whirlwind Attack, striking and killing Adders #2 and #6, and hitting Adder#4, Cobras #1 and #2.

Cobra #1 take a 5' step and takes full attack on Aleph. Threatens and confirms critical (37 to hit, 30 to confirm, including Sigrid's penalty) for 39 - 2 = 37 points of damage. Hits a second time (27 to hit) for 18 - 4 = 14 points of damage.

Cobra #2 takes a 5' step and takes a full attack on Miltos. Hits once (29 to hit), dealing 14 - 1 = 13 points of damage.

<???> and second group of Adders enter bank from other side. Adders delay to go with Adders from first group.

Korr Sentinels engage <???> and Adders.

Snakes in a Bank - Round 3

Adder #3 closes with Ullr and attacks twice (misses twice).

Adder #5 attacks Sigrid twice. First is a hit (AC 37). Deals 24 - 2 = 22 points of damage. Sigrid's Fortitude save vs. poison = 29, success. Second is a miss.

Adders #7-10 engage Korr Sentinels.

Malachi shook his head sadly. "What has Corinport come to these days?" he asked, the question not directed at anyone in particular. "I mean, assassins used to have some class. Now? Nothing." The knife spun in his hand as he aimed it at the joint of the arm of one of the assailants.

Aleph was hurt and hurt bad. If he didn't get a grip then this would be how his legend ended, stabbed to death by a nameless assassin in a bank. That would not do. Not at all. Wheeling around, Aleph attempted to split the man's focus between himself and his colleagues.

A quick feint allowing him to land a quick lash across his foe's leg but the follow up was sloppy, Aleph had let pain cloud his judgement. His mind had become fuzzy. There was no time for the pain now. Pushing it aside, Aleph kept his shield up.

Miltos was set for a strike, with his captain in flanking position behind the assassin. Malachi's dagger attacks didn't appear to be doing much, but at least they kept the armored attacker's attention divided, which allowed the bravo enough opportunity to try to snake his rapier into the robber.

Sigrid stepped to the side, her pike spinning in a wide arc. The point missed the assassin, apparently, but then the heavily armored butt of the pike came crashing down on his legs, knocking them out from under him. Capitalizing on his shock, she swung the sharp end back around, striking hard and fast.
She kept an ear out, her attention slowly shifting to the hallway and the commotion on the other side of the bank.

Ullr's brow furrows in concentration as he carefully quicksteps away from his adversary and launches and arrow into him, and then, before he even has a chance to drop to the floor, launches two more at his ally. He groans in frustration as one of his arrows miss, but he recognizes his advantageous position and focuses on the last serious threat in the vicinity.

Battered but unbroken, Aleph feinted and moved to the right, striking out at the assassin to keep his attention. Across the floor he spotted Ullr gracefully draw, pull and fire thrice, putting an arrow through the eye of two different assailants in the space of seven heartbeats. His own foe smiled at him rather wickedly, not noticing his other comrade being disemboweled by the blademaster. Nor did he notice Sigrid looming over him, until it was too late. The blunt end of the pike lashed out with supernatural speed, throwing the Coil down on his back with the distinct crunch of chainmail striking stone. The blade followed, and the battle was won as suddenly as it had started.

The companions looked at one another with fresh eyes. The Bank of Korr had never been attacked. The Coils of Karrn hadn't been defeated in open battle since their transformation in the middle of the Serpent Wars. It was a day of firsts. Malachi glanced behind him - a white-faced Cornelius was peeking out his office door, eyes wide as as kapri pearls.

All of this passed in a bare moment before a terrible chorus of groaning wails echoed down the hallway from the other chamber. At the same time the walls shook and cracked, putting clouds of dust and minute debris into the air.

[Malachi takes 5' step and executes full attack on Cobra #2 - has some trouble, inflicts net 1 points of damage.

Aleph takes 5' step and executes full attack on Cobra #1 - deals net 6 points of damage.

Miltos goes to town on Cobra #2, eviscerates him.

Ullr takes 5' step and executes full attack on Adders #3, #5, drops them both.

Sigrid takes 5' step and executes full attack on Cobra #1, making trip attacks until one succeeds. Third trip attempt succeeds, follow up attack kills off Cobra #1.

<???> does some crazy shit you can't see from where you are, killing three of the nearest Korr Sentinels. Moves.

Haste was rarely a merit in battle. Aleph knew this. The immediate threat had been dealt with but something else was coming. He shifted slightly to afford himself a better view and to see just what was unfolding at the other end of the corridor.

Sigrid glanced down at the Cobra she'd just speared.
"Shame. Ignoring my own requests."
She took a step to the north, pike twirling in the air, focusing on the commotion.
"Mr. Salazar? What's kept to the west? Your vaults, perhaps?"
She peered around the corner, down the hall.
"I believe you're being robbed."

"Mr. Salazar, I would get help or hide if I were you."

Ullr moves over towards the large hallway and peeks down from cover around the wall, and sees only a few corpses of Korr Sentinels on the floor. The sounds of combat convince him the fight isn't over yet, so he sets an arrow in his bow and prepares to fire at any foe that presents itself down that corridor.

"Siri, what do you want to do?"

"They're not after us, nor Mr. Salazar, it seems. Their target is something down there."
She indicated the hall with her pike.
"As is the boss. And I'd rather we avoid whatever sort of man commands these..." she indicated the fallen Coils "...footsoldiers. The sort of man to whom these are footsoldiers. We are out of our depth."
She sniffed. "Besides, did you hear that? Do you smell that? Sorcery, or alchemy, or the like. The sort of thing that happened in here. What did happen, anyway?"
Sigrid was starting to panic, eyes flicking around the room, at the dead bodies.

Malachi shrugged, his knife flicking between his fingers.
"I've always been one for discretion," he said. "A reassessment of the situation would not be out of line, I believe."

"Magic, poison, bank robbers, assassins. While it sounds like fun on a grand scale, we ought not be too hasty to involve ourselves much more than we have. That said, it can't hurt to help thwart these ruffians. Might be that the bank would be more...generous, I suppose."

Miltos moved to stand near Ullr. While the archer was seemingly very skilled with his weapon, even in melee range!, the blademaster thought it prudent to provide closer support, were it necessary.
