Fleeing from their former employers had been even more difficult than both of the hard bitten warriors had anticipated. The pursuit had been dogged, claiming the lives of most of their compatriots. For an outsider, it would be hard to believe that former brothers could be so ruthless in the pursuit of those who had so recently been ranked highly among them. Both Claelin and Leira knew the truth - the dogs were always ready to tear up a fallen leader to advance their status in the pack.

Both were wounded and haggard from their long flight, exhausted from days and nights spent eluding their pursuers. To stay ahead they'd had to forgo sleep regularly, and push beyond the limits of their considerable endurance. With no time to stop and hunt, their provisions had all but run out. Luckily, this last leg of the journey had taken them across the strait and onto the eastern peninsula of the Cannesian province. It would be hard for pursuit to find them now, with a long line of coast to search.

A local had indicated there was a sizable village north of their landing point, and with dogged determination they resisted the urge to sleep and instead pressed on to someplace more hospitable.

She has curly red hair that sits atop her head but doesn’t go past her neck. Her large grey eyes are often cast downwards, rarely meeting other’s gazes. She stands at 5 and half feet and only weighs roughly 120 pounds. While she moves with a grace and agility fitting her form, she doesn’t seem too confident most of the time, almost constantly being near Feather. She smiles often however, with even the tiniest making people instantly trust her; expressions of true happiness have been known to melt the hearts of even jaded Guildsmen. While quite pretty, Kindle it usually too meek to acknowledge praise for her looks.

Kindle's clothing consists of a simple cotton sleeveless shirt, trousers she has outgrown in recent years, and sandals that are fraying apart on her feet. They could be described as weather worn at best, ragged being a more common description, and decrepit being the most accurate. While it still functions to keep the sun from scorching her skin and still provides some decency, it marks her as the copperless street urchin that she is.

It was hot, but it was always hot in the South, The Weeping Princess of Fate and Sorrow was used to heat. She'd lived most of her life, and all of her death, in the South; heat no longer bothered her. What bothered her was the noon day sun, bearing down, bringing with it the hints of memory. Princess frown, shaded her eyes and moved on through the grasslands. Her patron, The Prioress, was growing impatient and Princess needed to report some progress on her mission.

She guessed it was the First of Descending Fire, and if was the First of Descending Fire, it meant she'd been tracking the traitor for over a month. The Prioress was not going to be happy. Then again, the Prioress was never happy, not happy with her or this traitor. The sad fool had sold out his village to gain The Prioress's favor, only to turn squeamish at the last moments. He'd lost his village regardless, but gained The Prioress's ire for his cowardice. Now Princess followed him, tracking him to the rolling foothills west of Chiaroscuro.

The dry grass crunched and split as she waded through it, he wouldn't stop here, odds were he'd keep heading west, until he was tired, or broke, or dead. Any of these suited Princess fine, as long as the fool didn't run too far or too long. In the meantime, the unforgiving sun continued to bear down on her, she felt akin to the grass she moved through, not tired but...beaten. As long as she kept moving she'd be fine, night would fall soon enough and she could rest. In his scabbard, Mercitual rattled in his sheath, crying out in pain or anger, or both. Princess rested her hands on her blade as she crested the next hill, stilling his movements.

There was a girl at the top of the hill. Dressed in sun bleached beggars clothes she knelt in a pose of supplication. Princess stopped, the girl hadn't noticed her yet and for now, she preferred it that way. Normally a girl wouldn't bother The Weeping Princess, she'd have past by like all the other people in this sun drenched world. But this girl, kneeling with her eyes closed at the top of a hill, this girl, had a mark on her. A solid circle of golden light shown from her forehead. Princess winced and shied back from the light, but stayed, gliding behind the girl and waited.

Okay, welcome to Los Angles. Keep your specs on--wouldn't want to miss out on any of the high-tech entertainment LA has to offer! No no, those aren't bodies, I said keep your fuckin' specs on!

Alright, so it's late Thursday night (technically early Friday morning, but fuck you). The sky is a blueish-yellowish color, on account of all the light LA shines into the sky. Other than the various kinds of pollution in the air, it's a pretty nice night. If you kept your fuckin' specs on like I toldja, you'd see a nice dark sky full of stars.

Linn, you're at the Angel Center. The Angel Center is a volunteer-run clinic that serves the downtrodden population of society. That's a euphemism; it's generally used as a front to service hi-tech criminals like yourself. Pi Larson volunteers out of here as a way to do his illegal splicing without drawing too much attention. Oh, yeah, and he gets paid for his volunteer work. Weird fuckin' world man.

The rest of you lumps are across the street at a dive bar, waiting for Linn. A few hours ago you all got a call from a one Mr. Johnson (suits aren't the most creative motherfuckers wandering the streets, let me tell you).

It turns out someone needs someone to head into gangland and recover or destroy (preferably recover) a shipment of weapons stolen from Starlight Watch, the private security firm that makes sure rich schmucks keep hitting the LA streets to have a good time.Mostly they roll around with assault rifles and combat prostheses giving shit to minorities, but some shit just never changes, does it?

It's actually unclear whether the weapons were stolen by or sold to the gangs, but that's the streets for you. Full of misinformation. You're supposed to meet Mr. Johnson at some club in downtown LA after Linn's checkup.

Anyway, Linn has got some problems and Pi Larson is the one who takes care of what ails her. Linn appreciates Larson's help, and Larson appreciates the attention. And the Kreds.

Linn, you had just finished up with Larson ("Come back real soon, sweetheart.") when the explosion hit. Luckily it didn't take out the back of the clinic where you are; it just blowsthe front to kibbles and bits. Your ears were ringing for a minute or two, and it was hard to see after the bright flash of the explosion, but before you know it Larson grabs you by the arm and pulls you out the back, into the clinic's modest garage. That's when you hear the gunshots--rapid-fire and loud, like assault rifles. Oh yeah, and screaming. Lots of screaming. Larson yells, "Come on, let's go, let's go!" and pulls you over to his ACar, when suddenly everything goes quiet. All you hear are quiet moans of pain and the crackle of the fire burning in the Angel Center. Larson stops, looking dumbfounded, or in shock, or some shit like that.

The rest of you hear the explosion over the loud dubstep playing in the bar, and then you start to hear the unmistakable sound of multiple assault rifles unloading in full auto. Before you can react to the gunfire, the gunfire ceases abruptly and you hear the sound of tries screeching.

Well, what do you do?

So, a not-so-recent post on the Wizards' site about D&D Next floated the idea of system where to-hit modifiers remain constant through a character's career, but damage increases. This got me thinking about the concept of leveling/advancing a character and what it is that a character should gain as a game progresses. In many games, characters get better at what they do as the game progresses: modifiers go up, dice pools increase in size, numbers generally get bigger. This leads to their opponents numbers having to undergo a similar increase if the game is to remain challenging. However, there is another school of thought out there where rather than the raw numbers going up, the number of options that a character has goes up instead. A character may still be doing the same damage after 6 months, but they now have more ways to deliver that damage (or some such thing).

Actually, now that I think about it, most games have both of these forms of advancement going on simultaneously.

So what is your preference? Do you prefer games where your character gains more raw power, but does basically the same thing through out their career, or one where their raw power is fairly constant but their versatility increases over time? If you like some mix (as I'm sure many do) how do you set the balance between the two?

Finally, as a kind of aside: Would you play in a game where your character never advanced? What would be the minimum amount of advancement that you would find acceptable?
