It is hot, that much is certain. The sand, that, too, is certain. The sky is a deepening orange, as a large sun sets behind the dunes. There is enough of a wind to cause chimes to clink, and to toss the dunes to air, creating a dull red haze to fade into the burnt sky.

Even with the breeze, the air has a stale quality to it, very dusty with the smell of copper to it. There are no clouds in the sky. This is a barren land, desolate and quiet.

Confusion, certainly, is the driving force this day. Where you are is uncertain, and for some where you were is uncertain. Nothing is as you left it. Where this world is and where it will take you is beyond speculation, but you know one thing - you are here, and the only thing to it is to take that first step.

The hot sand around me is stifling, almost suffocating. I can feel it grinding under armor, working its way into my boots, ears, and mouth.

With a heave, I struggle to unearth myself. I can feel sand sloughing away around my shoulders, but not enough to do more than free my arms up a little more. After several minutes of monumental effort, I manage to pull free of the shifting dust.

I'm lucky. A lesser man would have been trapped.

Spitting a mouthful of sand, I curse quietly to myself, as I try to get a good look at where I am now, or at least as much a look at the blowing dust will permit me.

Fantastic. Another place I don't recognize; never even heard of. Demon Wastes this place might be -- and aptly named, at that -- but Ashtakala it ain't.

You're not home yet, soldier.

Where is Scratch? As I dust the sand off of me, I glance around. I notice the young woman in front of me and the man with his back to me, and make mental note if I see Scratch or not. She'll be fine. Hopefully she's near though. And the man didn't see, but this one probably did. I wonder, the whole falling and landing? This should be interesting. Let's find out.

I smile sheepishly and speak to the woman I'm facing. "Hello."

LightBringer
6th of September, 2008, 08:45
I begin to look around for the source of the chimes, but suddenly a woman stands in front of me.

She speaks. I immediately answer without hesitation, "Hey! Do I know you? Are you Tiska, Peluda, or someone else?"

LadyGlutter

"Someone else I think.... I'm Mizuki. And I don't think we've met."

LightBringer
6th of September, 2008, 09:17
I flash a smile, "Well Mizuki it is certainly a pleasure to meet you. I'm OmniFrost." I extend a hand as I look to each side.

Doombot
6th of September, 2008, 10:37
That's an interesting name. As is yours.

I turn to face the two women as I pry my helmet off and dump out the majority of the sand.

OmniFrost doesn't sounds regional, I intone sardonically, but perhaps Mizuki can tell me where we are...?

I'm unsure about all of this. A collage of images assaults my mind every time I try to recall how I got here. The last thing I remember doing is slaying a certain rakshasa. I miss my wife, but somehow, that feels wrong. I can't put my finger on it.

LightBringer
6th of September, 2008, 11:21
I turn quickly, but in a startled fashion. Perhaps she could, but don't you think it would be polite to introduce yourself first? I look inquizically at the tall man.

LadyGlutter
6th of September, 2008, 11:26
Of course I take OmniFrost's hand, but when I hear the other voice, I also turn. I grin at that, feeling a bit more at ease already, and waiting for the answer.

Doombot

I am Aros Camlost, Captain of the Knights of Brey.

My gaze sweeps over the two women, critically examining them. I crack my knuckles, attempting to transmit an air of cool insouciance, not letting them know that I am ready to do battle at less than a moment's notice, should the need require it.

One of the women appears draped in magic. I can feel it pulsing with every heartbeat, ebbing and flowing with every breath. Almost at the same time, I can feel the faintest stirrings of hatred from Gurthang as it sleeps in its baldric on my back. The sword knows it too.

This one bears watching. She may mean well, but then, she may not. Best be prepared.

I put on what I hope is a reassuring grin as I move a few steps closer. Do either of you know where I can get a drink in this place?

LadyGlutter
6th of September, 2008, 23:16
"Good to meet you as well, Aros. I hate to disappoint, but I'm not really regional. So... no, I'm not the one to ask. I've no idea where we are, much less where a drink is."

I'm still looking around, trying to make some sense of the terrain, anything, "But I'd guess our best shot at a drink and a bath," at that I turn to look at Aros again and smile, "would be towards the sound of those chimes. Doesn't that chafe? Were you actually in the sand?"

Malak studies the bones before him for a while, before he hears the sounds from behind him, Two new arrivals, and is that the sound of digging? Cautiously he keeps an ear and eye on those behind him, but first completes his study of the bones. After a few moments, as those new arrivals behind him begin to converse, he stands up and turns to face them.

Malak is a large man, tall and powerfully built. His black skin glistens with sweat, and the only thing covering his muscled torso and arms is a simple fabric vest of green trimmed with a faded gold. His baggy fabric pants flap in the breeze, ballooning a bit as he stands and stretches his legs. The bow in his hand seems positively too large for him.

As he faces the threesome of new arrivals, he studies them in their conversation, and then scans the empty horizon before speaking. It would seem that we are alone in this barren waste, for whatever reasons our various Gods may have summoned us. His voice is a deep, powerfull bass, but somehow brightly coloured, I am Malak, and I know why I have been summoned. He glances down to the bones, What of each of you?

[Survival to study the bones, and Spot on the new arrivals if you please? I'm at work, so don't have the numbers from my character sheet.]

Doombot

I bite off my response to Mizuki about just how badly the sand does chafe as I spin to face this new stranger. Gurthang flashes out of it's scabbard, a long length of black steel interjecting itself between me and the others.

Damn! How did I miss him? It's mistakes like this that will get me killed.

Glancing quickly from face to face, I see none of them have drawn against me yet. That means little for the mage, but she is vulnerable to one of my talents anyway. As for the rest -- well, maybe this is an ambush, but if so, it's damn subtle.

I was not summoned here. I don't even know where here is, let alone the reason I ended up buried under several feet of sand. Enlighten me.

Chris Chandler

Where is Scratch?

Mizuki, you have a good indication that Scratch is on the lee side of this dune, below you, out of sight. She is easily within earshot, however.

The chimes that you all hear - bone and clay and wood, are upon what looks to be a shepherd's crook thrust into the top of the dune, although the staff itself is gnarled and sunbleached. There are also feathers and animal teeth adorning the staff, which gives the general impression of a tribal fetish.

There are no features around this waste that stand out to you, collectively. You are standing on a dune in a desert, you see, blurred by dust and wind, other dunes. As the sun hides behind the desert you can see even less.

Malak, you see the three people stand in common discourse. You notice nothing unusual about the situation, outside of the fact that where people now greet each other there was nothing but sand and the sound of chimes bearly a breath ago. Each looks somewhat confused, in his or her own way.

The bones have been here for some time - sunbleached and sandblasted. you would expect that the winds on this dune have recently exposed these bones, though the uncanny coincidence might suggest otherwise.

MadDogMaddux
7th of September, 2008, 12:27
Malak does not even blink as the man before him draws his sword, instead he flashes a wide grin, leans his head back and laughs heartily, Friend, if I meant you ill or harm, I would have inflicted it upon you whilst you yet dug yourself out from the sand. It would have been simpler by far, don't you think?

He shakes his head, shoulders shaking in mirth, No doubt you are as confused as I as to our location, but permit me to encourage you to sheathe your friend and give chance for our words to accomplish what weapons cannot.

He meets eyes with Aros, not in a challenge, but in invitation, eyes soft and brilliant. I have been here for many minutes, studying these bones. Then the two of you appeared, and shortly thereafter you, sir, dug your way to the surface. Again he crouches and gestures to the bones at his feet.

LightBringer
8th of September, 2008, 03:56
I laugh, lighting up my blue eyes. My mood is obviously good, and easily compensates for any confusion. "You guys are so funny." I brush some of the white hair that has escaped the braid back. "We're obviously in the desert. Where else do you think we could be?" My smile continues as one hand reaches into the large pocket on my left thigh, and the other reaches into the large pocket on the right thigh.

I draw....... out a tin cup and a watering can.

I giggle as I pour some water out of the can into the cup. "Here you go", as I extend it out to Aros.

((OmniFrost is wearing a pair of dark brown leather, low heeled boots. A pair of tan leatherish pants that look a little worn, with a large flapped pocket on each thigh. A deep red tunic that flaps lightly in the wind, with a large worn and crack leather belt loose on her hips. She has a pair of goggles tucked into the belt, and wears a pair of black velvet gloves. Her white hair glitters with a platinum chain with gold charms entwined through her braided hair. A hairy looking brown bag hangs off the belt as well. On her back is a pack with a quiver attached to it. There does not appear to be any arrows in it, and no visible weapons on her.))

I accept the cup cautiously, sniffing at the liquid proffered. It seems to be nothing more than clear, cool water.

I was expecting something a little higher proof, and a shade more bitter. I doubt this place has any pale ales within spitting distance.

I welcome the cup of water, and drink it down greedily, washing the dust and errant sand from my throat. Looking on at the dark-skinned man, I reluctantly sheathe my sword and stand, arms akimbo, waiting for further explanation.

Many thanks. I nod in OminFrost's direction.

LadyGlutter

As the group starts to look each other over, the assumption that I'm a local doesn't hold out. My eyes match my emerald green dress of silk. The dress is elegant and simple, but definitely formal wear, complete with a bodice, and hitting about midcalf. It is not a dress for roughing it in the desert. The boots underneath are finely crafted, but simple black leather. There is a scabbard with a rapier hanging nonchalantly about my hips, and a single javelin slung on my back. There is an unconscious radiance about every aspect of me, from my bright skin, in my exquisite features, in the grace of my movements, the play of the glints of gold in my loose wavy copper hair as the wind blows it in the dying light. I am the embodiment of femininity.

I answer Malak, while watching OmniFrost and Aros with amusement. "Well, actually, as for me, I know I wasn't called here -- I was expelled from elsewhere. I think this is just where I landed."

MadDogMaddux
8th of September, 2008, 12:51
Expelled? Malak furrows his brow, I came here of my own volition, and yet I was sent by The Shalm, you were Expelled? he searches the bones for a few that are the least worn and the most marked, to bring them with him. Standing once more, he meets eyes with the Captain of the Knights of Brey, I've not heard of the Knights of Brey. From where in the Flanaess do they hail?

Doombot
8th of September, 2008, 21:24
They are not from Flanaess. The Knights are from Breland, one of the Five Nations.

I look over the rim of my cup at him, sizing him up.

Why is he asking me about the Knights? I'm a mercenary-general; always have been, always will be.

As this thought crosses my mind, it sends an odd shiver down my back, and I have an odd sense of duality. I have all the trappings of a Knight, from the Medal of Valor pinned on my cloak, to an air of confidence and self discipline unlike anything a common mercenary could emulate.

LadyGlutter
9th of September, 2008, 00:31
They are pretty amusing, but I'd best break the news to them now, before everyone gets even more confused. My eyes are smiling as I tell the group, "I was expelled, yes, but from a different world, or maybe realm is a better term. The name of the person that did the expelling really probably would mean as little to you as it does for me to hear you speak of the Flanaess or Breland. We're probably not going to make much sense to each other if we talk in these terms. Or at least I won't understand you. If you do understand each other, I may as well tell you that you have me at an advantage."

MadDogMaddux
9th of September, 2008, 01:04
Malak furrows his brow at this, Other world? You speak, perhaps, of one of the Planes? Mechanus? Elysium? Perhaps this might be The Outlands or Gehenna in which we now stand....

Doombot
9th of September, 2008, 03:29
I don't know much about this place, nor how I got here, but I do know that the desert gets very cold at night. Since we're unlikely to find anything suitable for a fire, I suggest we look for a spot that offers more cover than the windward side of a shifting dune. We can discuss the wherefore's and the howto's once we're there.

As I look about from face to face to face, much of my latent suspicion melts away. It's becoming increasing clear that these folks are also out of their element, with little idea of how or why. But strange territory aside, the ease of command that comes as a result of being a
(Knight Captain)
mercenary commander begins to reassert itself. I try to urge the others towards a goal, albeit a short-term one.

I need to figure out what the hell happened. The last thing I remember is hacking apart very powerful Rakshasa, on a mission in Ashtakala for the Knights. But that doesn't jive with what I remember about being in a tent with a very sexy Drow woman...

Before we go, Malak, I would like to see those bones you spoke of.

MadDogMaddux
9th of September, 2008, 03:42
Malak nods his head in assent as Aros speaks, While we have yet time before the chill sets in, assuming that this place is as any other desert, you are right that these things are better discussed in whatever camp we can prepare. He turns to go and pauses when Aros speaks up again, I have collected them in my rucksack. We will speak of them once we have made camp, and I will tell you their story.

He glances over towards the ladies, If we are to make an attempt of surviving together, perhaps a bit of disclosure is in order. I am a ranger in service to Obad-Hai and have been accustomed to making my survival in the wilderness for the entirety of my life. I would assume that each of you has a certain field of experience as well, perhaps now is the time to make that known?

Doombot
9th of September, 2008, 04:17
I am no ranger, but I can get along well enough in the wilderness. I've spent more nights under the stars than under a roof, usually with no pillow softer than whatever rock is handy. When it comes to surviving, I am quite experienced at it.

MadDogMaddux
9th of September, 2008, 04:28
Malak smiles broadly, Forgive me, friend, I meant no challenge to your abilities. I merely mean to ask what is your field of specialty.

Doombot
9th of September, 2008, 05:15
Ah...beg pardon if I came across as a bit hostile -- this recent trip is playing hell with my memory, and I'm a bit on edge. I only meant to reassure you that I can care for myself, although I admit that I'm no Gatekeeper.

I grin at the tall man sheepishly, this mis-communication sapping the last of my belligerence.

My operational specialty is the neutralization of offensive practitioners of arcana, and others familiar with the occult. To that end, I possess many talents that allow me to combat them more safely than others.

Unaware of just how uniquely endowed I am with regards to my ongoing quest to hunt down magic users, I cast a sidelong glance at OmniFrost in particular.

I need to keep my eye on her. Both eyes, whenever I can spare them.

LadyGlutter
9th of September, 2008, 05:31
I look at Aros, startled, and even moreso as he looks at OmniFrost. "And I... hmmmm. I don't know that I have a field of specialty, unless fighting for freedom and individuality counts. Sounds a bit more philosophical than it really is when I put it that way though.

Basically, I'm a wanderer and a traveler and this isn't that tight a pinch for me either... oh, speaking of that, this is surely not Mechanus, no gears. Nor Elysium. No trees. Though the Outlands sounds like a possibility. But the desert is right on.

I'll see if I can see anywhere to head."

I spread my wings (Wait, where'd those come from? Were they there before?) and fly up for an aerial view.

LightBringer
9th of September, 2008, 06:58
I listen to Malak. I listen to Aros. When he looks at me, I smile. My eyes shift from his to the cup, and back.

I watch Mizuki as she soars up into the sky. Then shift my attention to Malak. Perhaps you should leave the bones of the staff's owner with the chimes. We don't need to anger a spirit in our first few moments upon this world.

MadDogMaddux
11th of September, 2008, 02:35
Malak laughs as Mizuki takes flight, and watches her as she ascends, a broad grin on his face. Then as Omnifrost speaks, he shakes his head, Aye, if these bones belonged to the owner of the staff, I would leave them. But they do not, they are the bones of a Child, and not from this place.

Doombot
11th of September, 2008, 03:58
I look briefly and nonchalantly at Mizuki's aerial acrobatics, acceptance preceding even the faintest tremors of amazement. After everything I've seen lately, this doesn't even deserve an honorable mention for strange.

Chris Chandler
11th of September, 2008, 10:44
The sun sinks even lower into the swirling sands, the night descending rapidly. The cooling air brings a strong breeze with it, and the chimes clink and clatter loudly. All three on the ground take note of Mizuki as she soars for a better view of your collective surroundings.

Mizuki, you break past the dust quickly enough and into open relatively open air. There is a big thermal right where you are, which would give you a quick ride up into the high atmosphere, but, you don't want to lose your bearings.* This vantage gives you a somewhat better view of the topography, but the sands go on almost to the edge of your vision. You can make out, to what you would consider east, about a half-day's trek east, in fact, what looks badlands, rather than actual sandy desert. To the west you see nothing but sand and wind, but darker shapes in the distance, suggesting a low mountain range, barely seen against the waning light. The north offers a similar view to the east, roughly a good trek to rocky barrens, and the south shows sand and wind and nothing more.

There are, here, no distinct features to the land, no meaningful landmarks, and no clear directional markers, other than the setting sun, which will be down in a matter of a quarter-hour.

Anything else you want to view, Mizuki?

* LG say no way to losing sight of folks

MadDogMaddux
11th of September, 2008, 12:24
Malak continues to look upwards, watching on, but turns to watch OmniFrost as well, How about you, Miss OmniFrost? Clearly you are a kind and considerate individual, but you have not said much of who you are or from where you hail...

LadyGlutter
12th of September, 2008, 00:54
No, for now, that is sufficient. If I had been accompanied, I might have caught that thermal and found somewhere better to light, but as it is, I'll make my way back down. I will fly around in a wide circle on my way down, trying to see if there is discernible path, leading anywhere at all, even if it stops abruptly. I don't expect footprints or anything like that, but possibly something marked by those windchimes every so often? Also, any vegetation, at all, would be nice to take note of.

LightBringer
12th of September, 2008, 01:26
A smirky smile returns to my lips as I look at Malak, "Weren't you paying attention? I'm the threat!" as I glance back at Aros. "Are you done with my cup sir?"

MadDogMaddux
12th of September, 2008, 06:22
So the good Captain believes you are a mage and therefore a threat, that much I have indeed discerned. But you have said almost nothing of yourself. Whether or not you CARE to entrust yourself Aros, I would ask that you entrust yourself to ME, at least for the duration of our journey out of this Desert. But truth engenders trust, not mystery.

LightBringer
12th of September, 2008, 08:19
I laugh, a good hard laugh, "I have no problems entrusting myself to anyone. Aros' personal problems are his own. I have no intentions of harming him, or anyone else, unless it is absolutely neccesary. As it is, it appears magical water has no ill effects on him. As to where I am from, I to originate from Flanaess. Although I don't spend much time there."

Chris Chandler
12th of September, 2008, 14:17
Mizuki, you bank around easy, looking for anything that might stand out, be it an odd rock jutting from the dune, a foot trail, even the husk of a dead Joshua Tree. The immediate vicinity offers no such feature. You see no vegetation right here. You see no other windchimes, no foot paths, nothing else that you could use as an immediate landmark. The dunes themselves, maybe for short-term orientation, but nothing for continuous travel.

The distance offers little respite, in that regard. The western mountains you anticipate are miles off are just a featureless darkness here. The southern dunes extend into the horizon, and the north offers the scrabble of distant badlands. The east, only, as you make your pass (specifically because you make your pass widely) you think that there is a table of rock in the badlands that you can use to keep your orientation. It is distinctive enough. With it you can probably keep true going any other direction.

MadDogMaddux
12th of September, 2008, 23:52
Malak furrows his brow, I have to think outside the box here...somehow not everyone here is from my understanding of reality... What part of the Flanaess do you hail from, and where DO you spend most of your time now?

Doombot
13th of September, 2008, 01:46
Expressionless, I toss OmniFrost's cup back to her, perhaps a little harder than need be.

LadyGlutter

As the sun finishes it's descent behind the dunes of this forsaken place, the four of you each look upon another, the tension understandably high. The Only the sounds of the chimes break the conversation.

I glower right back at Malak, staring up several inches, undaunted

What I was taught is that women are equal in station to men, including their capacity to cause harm. I was taught that blithely accepting everyone at face value can deleterious effects on one's well-being. I was also taught to trust my instincts, which is why my sword is safely stowed. A thousand pardons for not trusting this 'lady' -- or any of you, for that matter -- implicitly, five minutes after meeting. Five minute, what's more, after finding myself mostly buried under sand in a place I've never been, with the odd feeling that I'm three different people.

It seems likely now that we will need to combine our efforts if we want to make it out of this wasteland alive. But that doesn't mean that I will give my trust freely, without it being earned. That's the only reason I'm alive today.

There is no shouting, no cursing. The tirade comes rolling out with a calm intensity, as if lecturing a raw recruit.

Feelings can mend more easily than bones. I will apologize for my distrust only when it has been proven to be unnecessary beyond a shadow of a doubt.

LadyGlutter
13th of September, 2008, 10:29
I fold up my wings. They have snowy white feathers, slightly glimmering even in this dusky light. If anyone bothers to take a closer look, the shafts of the feathers are gleamingly opalescent, with almost a mother-of-pearl effect.

I don't know why they're so tense, but I can guess enough to know maybe I should speak up. I interrupt, nodding, and grinning a little bit. "Three different people? You sure you're not a threat to yourself? Yeah I'll reserve my trust too, sounds like a plan."

I chuckle, and hope that this breaks the tension a little.

I saw very little up with my aerial view up there. The dust is kicking up something fierce. There's badlands to the north and east... and if we head a little to the east we might can use one of the rocks I saw to orient ourselves without knowing the stars at night... and to the west, far out, there might be mountains."

MadDogMaddux
13th of September, 2008, 12:06
Malak shakes his head in response to Aros, but does not reply, instead turning to Mizuki, Your wings are quite beautiful, angelic even. Where did you get them? he speaks with the hint of a smile on his voice.

Pausing to think, he turns to the whole group, May I reccomend that we simply make camp in the lee of this dune? Night is coming on and we've yet to determine what it is we shall do next. Perhaps I can share with you why I am here, and why I believe you are here. Then we can see if it agrees with each of you or not.

Doombot
13th of September, 2008, 13:21
That sounds appropriate. I could use a little rest, although I'd prefer to get away from this sand.

I dig out a length of rope and lay it on the ground, tightly coiled. Muttering a syllables I learned
(from a wizardess while fending off invading Dhakani)
(or was it a gift from the Locathah)
from an old Drow swaeme in a campagin against the giants, I coax the rope up off the ground, until it stands a good thirty feet up.

You folks are welcome to sleep on the desert sand, if you like, but I've already been acquainted with it, and I can do without. There's room for plenty; just check your baggage before entering.

((I've managed to find a few minutes.))

I catch the cup 'tossed' by Aros. The extra zing doesn't seem to bother me.

To the current offer I nod in appreciation to Aros, "Your offer is tempting, but I prefer to stay out here. I enjoy the elements, and the challenges they present."

LadyGlutter
14th of September, 2008, 10:43
I look up at the rope and am thinking when OmniFrost speaks up. I nod. "I'm camping out here, too. Thank you, though, Aros.

And thank you for the compliment, Malak, I appreciate it. Oh, and I got my wings from the same place I got my arms and legs and head." I laugh at that, because it was a really weird question to me.

MadDogMaddux
14th of September, 2008, 12:01
Malak chuckles briefly with Mizuki, and shrugs off his knapsack and quiver, then turns to Aros, I have slept in a makeshift shelter for the last 10 years, I will look forward to a night out of the elements. May I suggest, then, that we make our respective preparations for the night, then gather at the foot of the rope and I will share with you the story of my journey, and perhaps each of you would be willing to do the same? There are certainly far worse ways of passing the time.

LadyGlutter

Sitting down next to the dangling rope, Malak nestles into the sand a bit and leans against his knapsack. In the....reality I came here from, I began life in a tribe of guardians in service to the god Obad-Hai, whom we know as the Shalm. He is the protector of the Oerth and nature herself, and the bringer of calamity upon those who would despoil her. I was trained from youth as a guardian of one of his hidden Temples.

He procedes to describe growing up in such an environment and the training one such a guardian receives, gradually leading up to the point where they were attacked.

We received word that these evil men, whom we came to know as the Scarlet Brotherhood, had made entrance to the Shalm's sacred wood, with intent to despoil the temple and take what power they could to further their cause of despotism. My clan and I moved to defend and were initially successful. He then describes vividly a series of battles fought in the woods wherein he and his clansmen fought bravely and carried the day until the arrival of an evil sorcerer.

Our clan was decimated in the ensuing confrontation. While we were trained against such dark arts, he overpowered us. The unexpected arrival of a DRAGON furthered our doom, and it was only for the ingenuity of my clan that we were able to fend the beast off. He smirks just faintly, To this day I am enamored with the many uses of a tanglefoot bag. He pauses, bowing his head, We did not slay the dragon, however, nor did we slay the Sorcerer, I am ashamed to admit. He fled before our remnant, and we were content to see to our wounded and shore up the defenses. We were fortunate for the arrival of many of the Shalm's druids and holy men to succor our need, but it was not soon enough for the better part of my clansmen. As I was young yet, they took pity on me and brought me to their temple where I was healed, then trained for some time.... Then the Shalm came to me in a vision, and sent me to pursue the Sorcerer who wrought this evil upon my clan. And with his guidance I tracked him into the Barrier Peaks of the Crystalmist mountains, where I found an ancient and sinister evil dwelling.

He proceeds to speak of a land blighted by centuries of necromantic energy, the assembling of a group of heroes to explore these lands, and their arduous journey within. He tells of Hobgoblin armies, haunted mountain villages, and a land that seems to breathe undeath. Eventually he tells of their finding Loric, the sorcerer, and of his escape through shedding the blood of innocent children to mask his own evil and thereby gain him entrance to a portal of pure good. And here, he pauses, eyes misting in reflection, Whether wise or unwise, I do not know, but we pursued him into the pool which we had come to know as the Crystal Chalice. And yet, we did not follow him. Instead we emerged from the pool again to stand by its shores. Some of us, however, had been made mad by the power, others of us seemed to grow in strength from it. It is my grief that I was forced to slay some of these my companions for the madness drove them to attack us. And those of us that survived chose to guard the Chalice unless someone of great evil should find it and bend it to their purposes.And so there I dwelt for many years, in the land of undeath.

He continues to speak of his one companion, Ambrose - a paladin of great might, who stood with him in the ensuing years until he himself fell in battle - but continued to stand beside him as a spirit yet warding away the evil. Until after many years, others arrived with a calling of their own to take the burden of guarding the Chalice. It was then that the Shalm visited me once again in my dreams and showed me that once these young ones assumed the mantle, that I was to enter the Chalice once more. Here he pauses and shakes his head,

At this point, things become confusing. I entered the Chalice and was immediately swept into a floodtide of memories so vivid it was as if I were living them again. Yet, some of these memories were DIFFERENT than I had experienced, and some were entirely new to me - but all of them MEMORIES - things which it seemed I had lived and experienced myself. Finally after what seemed a lifetime of memory and new memory, I found myself in the great hall of the Shalm himself, and he told me that he was sending me away from all that I knew to once again resume my pursuit of Loric. Malak cracks his knuckles and a grin creeps across his face, And so have I arrived here, shortly before you all. The bones which you saw me studying are the selfsame bones of a young child which Loric defiled in order to enter the Chalice. He came here, I know not when, but not recently, and so must I find him and slay him. I know not what to make of these....dreams, this other reality that I seem to have experienced - but I feel as though from those memories alone I know enough about farming to establish my own homestead if I wished. The only thing that convinces me that my life as a guardian of the Shalm is the true reality over that of a farmer is the existence of these bones which I now carry in my knapsack. This shatters all doubt for me, and so I am resolute for this purpose. I can only assume that the Shalm brought the three of you here at this time to assist me in my task - and yet from hearing what little each of you has said, I realize that this may be assuming much indeed.

At this, Malak leans back once more, and looks around the circle to the other three, awaiting some sort of reaction or response.

I wait and listen, seeming to perk up more toward the end of the tale. After a few moments of thought I finally reply, "Okay Malak, I have a couple questions. First if the experiences were different and entirely new, how are they only memories? Second isn't it entirely possible that your experience with Obad-hai was merely another of these new experiences that weren't real, but new memories? Thirdly we are in a desert, so how can you be certain about the time the dead boy has been here?" I stop and wait, with a smile.

I listen to Malak's tale with casual, but growing interest. When mention of the sorcerer comes up I subconsciously clench my fists, unaware that I'm doing so until later, when I find little red crescents where my nails have dug into my palms.

Your story is a good one, Malak. You are quite brave, and have seen much more than your years suggest. I wish that I had been present when you confronted Loric! Things may have ended differently then. But it appears that I may still get my wish. What you said at the end strikes a chord though; it is eerily familiar to my own experiences in coming here. If the rest of you will permit me -- I quickly scan the faces of those around me for signs of approval -- I will try to explain how I came to be here, although I doubt I will be as entertaining as you.

I crack my knuckles out of old habit, barely noticing.

How will I begin? How can I explain to them what I'm not even sure of myself? I can't even tell what's real anymore and what's not. I suppose it's like my wife used to say: 'All men must start somewhere; where better but the beginning?'

The place that I come from is a land called Eberron. It consists of five main nations, and several smaller ones, all of which have been at war with each other until a few years ago. I was a Knight for the kingdom of Breland, a Captain. I can't tell you much more than that; all I remember is going on assignment to Ashtakala in the Demon Wastes, to prevent a powerful rakshasa vizier from opening a rift to the plane of madness.

There was a
(presence)
voice there, in the core of my being. It questioned me...I can't remember what about. I know that it used me for a vessel to escape that place. It was some being of great power. Even I have never seen or felt anything like it before.

There was a score of times and places after that. I can remember being a child on my father's farm, and commanding general of the Knights of Brey. There were others, but the ones that stand out the most were as a mercenary commander on Xen'Drik, waging war against giants. I was married to a beautiful Drow woman that I won in contest from a fire giant.

I describe the tent on the night before battle, and how the only consistency was Gurthang, black and deadly, still bound to me.

I'm still not sure that my memories of being a Knight are not the false ones. I have this medal, I gesture to the medal pinned to the shoulder of my cloak, but I don't remember when it was given, or why. It could be the product of the same Voice that brought me here. There are other things too. I feel different. Powerful. But something is not right in my mind, like myhead is filled with thistledown that keeps trying to blow away. It's extremely disconcerting.

What of you two? I ask, turning my attention on the two women.

I look between the two men, absolutely bewildered, and really unsure what to say. "Well, ... I wasn't sent on some holy mission. I was busy, caught in a battle between two evil beings, and one of them found my presence to be a nuisance and while I was distracted, banished me from his world.

I fell for a long while, until this world ... reached out and grabbed me. Swallowed, really. I saw a great mouth open, and I fell in, and now I'm here. My arrival here is simply because I was unprepared for the power Lord Godfrey had to expel me before I destroyed him.

My memories are in a straight line. There are times I don't remember much, but that is the haze of memory, not confusion as to what was reality or dreams. I wonder, is it this place that has done this to you? Or the journey here?"

Thirdly we are in a desert, so how can you be certain about the time the dead boy has been here?" I stop and wait, with a smile.

I nod, Understandable questions, all of them. As I have reflected upon the two sets of memories, there is one set with....inconsistencies in it, while the other set is consistent all the way through. Additionally, I lift the massive bow that has been laying beside me, this is certainly not the tool of a Farmer. I shake my head, No, I am certain that the life of which I have spoken is true. I concede that it is possible that the second life is also true, but considering that Obad-Hai specifically told me that the other memories are the work of HER... again he shakes his head as if reliving a memory, The woman I percieved to be my well-meaning wife disolved in memory into the face of a dragon. Possibly the self-same dragon that attacked my clansmen and I. I believe much of this second set of memories to be her doing.

I turn and draw out one of the bones, covered in runic carvings. It is worn down with age, and proffer it to OmniFrost, I have studied these bones, but you may do the same if it will settle the issue for you.

At Malak's request, I sift through a morass of memories and images. Picking up on the details would normally not trouble me, but having several times the memories to piece together changes the task to a difficult mental exercise.

It is hard to do her justice. Myrinil was a strong, beautiful woman. She had her share of hardships; I won her from a giant named Cloyer. It was rather unexpected -- I was there to secure an artifact, not a marriage.

She was tall for a drow, and very strong willed. She knew it was likely that she would be forced to carry on without me, but she did not bemoan the fact. Her skin was dark, much blacker than yours, my friend. Her hair was silvery-white, and she had deep green eyes. I have never seen another drow with eyes like hers, although I must admit that I do not know many.

My brow furrows in concentration as I strive to recall everything about Myrinil. A strange sensation washes over me, the feeling of being intimately connected with someone that I've never met.

How about the pupil? Were her pupils normal for a Drow, or more....vertical? Malak shakes his head and bursts out in laughter as the expressions on Omni and Mizuki's faces register in his mind.

Forgive us, Ladies, I am certain that you now believe us both to be out of our minds. And perhaps....to a degree....we are? He shrugs and turns once more to Aros, And forgive me if it seems I am trying to impose a thought into your mind, friend. It is just that I too have the memory of a devoted and well-meaning wife, and yet she belongs to the set of memories which the Shalm said were false - and she had Green eyes which at one point in my memory dissolved into those of a dragon.

He shakes his head, So, milady OmniFrost, you have been quite reticent to this point. I beg you, tell us your story?

"I'm afraid I have no story to tell, or at least nothing so... 'interesting'.

As so many other times in my life, I was traveling one path, and now I'm on another. Whether it is due to divine intervention, evil adversaries, or some other unseen force I know not, and really don't care. I relish things that are new, and live for now. So I look forward to this journey, and all that comes with it.

I can say with relative certainty though, that Shalm did not bring me here, and with positive certainty, is that if all you offer is your quest to kill another living being, based on your testimony alone, I may very well be traveling this journey alone, as I have done many times before."

MadDogMaddux

I speak up. This is annoying.

"How are you so sure she's a friend? Have you checked HER eyes? Or mine, either, for that matter? You're quite forward, aren't you? Shouldn't you at least buy her dinner or a drink first? And anyway, what's so wrong with dragons? Seems like you've only met one to me."

Doombot

I raise a sardonic eyebrow in OmniFrost's direction.

Nothing interesting? So being plunged through the veil between worlds and into another reality must be commonplace for you, if you think it so mundane.

As for dragons, I must take Malak's side once more. I turn to face Mizuki so that the flickering light highlights the pocked scarring on one side of my face. A green did this, one not much bigger than a horse. It still burns me, and even the best healing magic can't remove the scarring. Dragons are treacherous beasts, the lot of them; I've never met one worth trusting. If this Loric has dragons with him, then we shall deal with them as well.

MadDogMaddux
24th of September, 2008, 13:20
At this, Malak leans back and shakes his head, chuckling, Well, I am not certain about where you come from, but in my world, Metallic dragons are typically good, while non-metallic dragons are evil. He nods towards Aros, The dragon to which I refer was indeed....chromatic.

He turns again to Mizuki, As far as being forward, I have nothing to hide, so I speak. Therefore I generally mistrust those who make habit of guarding their speech so closely. Again he shrugs, Besides, we four have each found ourselves ripped from our realities and deposited here in this seemingly endless desert. It is my experience that travelers pass the time telling stories, if this is not agreeable to you, then you may do as you like - but be not surprised if others percieve you as unfriendly.

Doombot
24th of September, 2008, 21:13
You have strange dragons, my friend. Where I am from, dragons are like people: they don't hold a particular morality based on the color of their hide.

Anyway, if these two refuse to talk, I'm going to bed.

With that, I begin to rise, dusting the sand off and stretching until my back pops like my knuckles so often do.

LadyGlutter
24th of September, 2008, 22:20
I stand up as well, good and riled up now. My eyes mainly flash between the two men, though occasionally I look at OmniFrost as well.

"And a good night to you, sir!

Before you retire, I do have a few things to say, though giving you a map to my mother's house isn't on that list. May I ask you, which is it, dragons are like people, and free to pick a morality, or they're treacherous, the lot of them? It's a rather important distinction to me.

Further, we all admit that our arrivals here were strange, and I for one am NOT ready to impart all my life story to people I just met. It can lead to danger to tell a stranger everything. You may have nothing to hide, Malak, but my own caution has served me well enough, I think. I mean, I have no problems with possibly having been married to my enemy, or something else so sinister! I'm shocked that with such a tale, you would presume to expect full disclosure. Knowing someone's life story does not equate to the mere telling stories of innocent stories to pass the time!"

MadDogMaddux

I rise, "Good night, sleep well all." I start to turn away and then turn back, "I will say this though before I retire. I could easily tell you all the tales you want to hear, even though they would all be lies. So perhaps, you should be grateful that I consider you ally enough not to do you that discourtesy. Perhaps tommorow will bring new surprises." I smile and turn away, heading over the dune that the chimes are on.

I watch the others bed down, then quietly head over to the chimes to have a good study of then. Afterwards, I'll sit beside them and quietly pray to Obad-Hai for maybe an hour, then climb the rope and go to bed - stowing my gear prior to entering, as Aros instructed.

I lean back and turn to watch OmniFrost, at first making as if to speak, but then thinking better of it. Sighing, I shake my head and turn once more to Mizuki.

If Malak is waiting on me to bed down, he’s got a bit of a wait coming. In fact, as I climb to the top of the dune myself, following in OmniFrost’s path, I will look at him. “I thought you said ‘good night’. Aren’t you going to bed? Or was that just a dismissal, you were done talking if I just was rattling on about people having a right to privacy and stuff? I told Aros good night because he said he was turning in.”

I'm still watching Omni's path as I speak.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I walk a bit on the top of the dune, lightly pacing, but not agitated. Just keeping warm and active. "It was kind of him to offer, yes."
I glance at Omni. "So she hasn't told you where she is from. I would not go that far just yet, either. You seem very friendly, that is true. But in my eyes, taking a life is not something to be taken lightly. Your tale and expectations of me, just because I'm in the same place at the same time.... Well, you should not expect to trust me yet. I don't trust you. If we are trustworthy, and we spend enough time together, then we will learn to trust each other."
I can certainly understand your thoughts. And you are right that there is often wisdom in caution. Forgive me if I seem overly eager, but you must understand that I am a hunter. I have always been a hunter, and today you come upon me as I once more pick up the trail of a quarry that I had thought lost many years past. I shake my head, And you are right to say that I should not trust you, and yet I desire to do so. If we four are thrust together in this place, each torn from his or her own home, how can we assume it to be coincidence? You say you were banished, but who controls the destination of your banishment? Could it not be that there is some force guiding each of us to this destination at this exact time? And yes, I realize that it seems much of me to assume that you are here to assist in my mission - but then I ask you, what alternative explanation would you provide?
I realize Malak is not going to bed as he said, and indeed strikes up another series of questions.
I stop at the chimes and turn, and respond in a fairly calm, but somewhat chastizing tone, "Well, if you stopped considering yourself the center of the multiverse, perhaps you might realize that we may be here to help the people of this world. Perhaps we were brought here, but not to help you, but to help the less fourtunate that reside on this world. It's possible the foe you seek is here, and it is fully possible he has left long ago. I suggest you think more of others than yourself, if you ever want to start earning my trust."
I have spent my entire life as a servant, and I am not here to do my will, but the will of him who sent me. And again, if you have a plausible alternative, I have said that I am open to it. "Oh, well... I'm kind of a night owl and not at all sleepy. And you don't want to watch us girls undress, anyway. Trust me on that one. So I'll go sit with Omni and we won't disturb your conversation with good old Obad-Hai."
I wonder how much of that Scratch heard. She's gotta be freaking out.
MadDogMaddux
I bow deeply, grinning at her comment, Much thanks, milady. I will remain here by these chimes, but facing away from the two of you. I doubt you will hear me when I leave. I bid you goodnight.
LadyGlutter
"Good night."
With that, I walk down the dune towards OmniFrost.
LightBringer
1st of October, 2008, 04:20
I watch as Mizuki, begins down the slope, "I agree. It's not worth it without knowing if I'd be ending suffering, or causing it."
I stand as Mizuki approaches, "Hello Mizuki."
LadyGlutter
1st of October, 2008, 05:20
"Hello, Omnifrost. Am I interrupting anything?"
LightBringer
1st of October, 2008, 05:43
I smile, "No, not at all. I'm just waiting for Malak to go up the rope with Aros. What can I do for you?"
LadyGlutter
1st of October, 2008, 05:55
I grin. "Me too. He may be a while. It's prayer time for him. I was going to sit down with you and wait, but only if I wouldn't be disturbing you as well."
LightBringer
1st of October, 2008, 05:59
I gesture to the sand, "No, have a seat. I was just debating the scales of the cosmos. Would you like some bread and cheese?"
LadyGlutter
1st of October, 2008, 06:15
I sit down, smiling. "I'd love some bread and cheese, I haven't eaten in a while. Thanks! I'd offer to fill the meal out with something, but don't have my pack on me. I expect I'll find it by breakfast time, though. So, scales of the cosmos, huh? Do they offer any insight? Seems like they'd be rather indecisive."
LightBringer
1st of October, 2008, 07:05
I reach into the left pocket of my pants, dig around a bit and pull out two wrapped parcels. Unrolling the first, and extending the loaf of bread, "The bread may be a little stale, but the cheese is divine. It is the best the herders on Mount Kuth'tular have. So far it is the best I've ever found," then unrolling the second, which is obviously the cheese, and offering that as well.
"The scales are pretty much even I suppose. Really it's more myself weighing the effects of my actions on the rest of the cosmos, and how it would be affected."
LadyGlutter
1st of October, 2008, 07:24
I take a bit of each, and when I hear such praise, I definitely take a moment to pay attention to the cheese and look it over carefully, even sniffing it before eating it.
I nod, "I'm not familiar with that mountain... hm. From goats?" I take a bite and a minute to savor it. "Thank you again. I appreciate you sharing something so rare with me. I'm a fan of cheese anyway, thank you for the treat.
Anyway, I don't know that we can ever know just how far reaching our actions are. Are you talking about our supposed 'quest', or just in general?"
LightBringer
1st of October, 2008, 07:48
(The cheese has a strong odor, but not overwhelming. It looks almost brittle, and crumbles nicely into the mouth when bitten, then quickly softens with the heat of the mouth, and almost dissolves away. It has a very sharp, but rich flavor.)
After taking some myself and storing the parcels back into the pocket, I sit down. "Well,..... they're goat like." I laugh. My face lighting up with the broadest smile yet. "You are quite welcome. I don't mind sharing".
After a moment to recover, "I'm not on any quest right now." You can see the wheels turning, "She seems kind enough, and she is far from the rude mage-slayers."
I lower my voice slightly, "In all honesty, I have been debating about the bones by the staff. Malak says they belonged to a young boy, which may or may not be true. Let's say they are for arguements sake. If it were within my power to restore the boy's life, what would be the consequences? It has been many years according to the story. His family has surely adjusted, and moved on, if they are even alive. What if even though he was slain as Malak says, his soul is now at rest in a heavenly plane? Would it be right to rip him from such a place? I agree that our actions can be far-reaching, and sometimes unseen, but this one has some immediate, and definitive results".
LadyGlutter
1st of October, 2008, 10:30
"Mmmmm. It's good." I listen, then think for a while.
"I just told Malak that taking a life is not to be taken lightly. I think it's funny that you're contemplating the results of the opposite action, but I still hold the same opinion." I laugh. "Strange, but true. I wouldn't do it, if it were in MY power to, anyway. "
LightBringer
1st of October, 2008, 11:25
For a few moments I listen to the wind, "I know it's not something to take lightly. I had mostly ruled that option out. I prefer to follow the natural cycle, although there are exceptions. My main thoughts were on the status of the soul. I believe I can remedy that later though."
I smile again, my thoughts becoming less hectic, "Of course that is if Malak ever goes to bed. What about you? Why are you waiting for him to retire for the night?"
Blood everywhere. A lot of it is mine. More of it isn't. Neck hurts.
No, no time for that. Dahai can fix me later, or Rath. A pity Calor turned out to be more a hindrance than a help. He was a skilled field medic. Slippery blood. Hard to hold onto to
(Gurthang)
Anglachel. No worries, the sword knows I won't let go. Can't let go.
Gotta make it to the barghest. Black dragon-men everywhere, they're huge -- even bigger than IED. Good thing warforged don't care about that. Damn, he's brutal. We might make it.
Closed the distance. Not looking so smug anym -- sonofawhore! It jumped, just as I -- gotcha now! Pulse of hatred, through my arm, through Anglachel, through its heart. Flesh and bone, parting under black iron. It's a good feeling. Blood everywhere.
One dragon left, too far away. Have to jump.
"IED, close ranks, flank right! Rath, cover Dahai!"
Too slow. Damn armor, have to talk to Jean about something lighter. Almost there. Quick strike, clean. Now it's just a party; two recruits with a stick can handle this now.
I toss and turn a little while longer, still armor-clad. Eventually my
(memory)
dream gives way to much needed sleep.
Malak - You are now able to turn your attention to prayer and in the relative quiet are able to properly meditate. The sand is less biting now as the wind continues to die down, though the chimes are still creating their clamorous song. Your meditations are only darkened in that you seem so very far away from The Shalm tonight, as if separated by a sea you cannot cross. You feel Obad-Hai, but it is as echoes in the mountains.
Mizuki and Omnifrost, as you are enjoying the quiet of the evening, it become apparent that Malak is beginning his evening prayers. The night wind is slowing to a dusty breeze, though it will be some time before the dust in the sky settles to the ground, if it ever does in this desolate place.
It is going to be another long night, Aros. Your dream-memory is only the beginning of your unstable sleep.
I see you on the sands Camlost. I feel your breath. Will you kill them as you killed Kumbhakarna? It would do you well to return to the path of blood, man of the waking world.
LadyGlutter
2nd of October, 2008, 00:56
"A few reasons. I like the stars, and don't want to go to bed yet. I was hungry, but that's better now. I also was thinking of flying up higher than I did before to see what I could see, if it is bright enough. This dress is not suited for where we are. I'm not changing in front of them in the morning, and anyway, I haven't found my stuff. Oh, and can I ask you, do you also have a dislike of dragons?"
LightBringer
2nd of October, 2008, 01:18
My smile continues, "Dragons? Dragons are fine. Some of them are misunderstood, but generally I've found that they are pretty reasonable. You just have to be willing to talk, and accept their point of view as a valid arguement." I shrug.
"Would you like some water to wash that down?"
LadyGlutter
2nd of October, 2008, 01:35
"Yes, pl... wait. How much water do you have?"
LightBringer
2nd of October, 2008, 01:53
I laugh, "Enough." As I withdraw the watering can from the right pocket, along with the tin cup, and fill it for Mizuki. I offer her the cup, and stick the can back in the pocket.
LadyGlutter
2nd of October, 2008, 03:31
I smile as I wash the food down, "Thanks again." And then return the cup to Omnifrost. After that I fall silent, staring up at the sky, checking on Malak from time to time.
LightBringer
2nd of October, 2008, 03:36
I put the cup back in it's pocket. I sit down, and enjoy the breeze. Watching Mizuki from time to time.
"If you'd like to go flying feel free. If you'd like some company I could join you, or I could stay here. I know you'd like to find your pack."
LadyGlutter
2nd of October, 2008, 04:30
Hmmmm.... Maybe Scratch'll come out if we're flying. I sure wouldn't expect her to introduce herself to the others. But this way she's got the choice herself.
Without any allusion to what I'm thinking but, "Alright, lets see how well you keep up then" I take off, smiling and happy to be doing something. I circle the camp area a few times before heading straight up.
LightBringer
2nd of October, 2008, 04:48
I laugh a little, "Oh, if only it were that easy." I take advantage of the circles to quickly dig in my pack, make some adjustments, and slide my pack back on.
Then I shoot up into the air and join Mizuki. "I have no doubt you'll blow me away, but I've always enjoyed chase." I look much the same, except now, in the rush, my necklace is hanging free.
(Mizuki would have seen Omni quickly take off her tunic, slide something shiny on, and then put her tunic back on.)
I take several moments to let my spirit rest, focusing on the sound of the blowing breeze, the patter-clatter of sand falling on sand, the subtle crunch and rumble of dunes shifting slightly, the aching silence of the desert and its duality of thirst and abhorrence for water. So doing I seek to become one with the desert, settling into the dune, burying my hands deep into the sand and feeling the residual warmth within - waiting in silence.
Shalm, my sense of your distance grows. Yet you are the guardian of ALL nature, I beg you draw near that my fellowship with you may mature and bear fruit. Put to death my doubts and second-guesses. As this day was born in expectation, it grew into tearful goodbyes, and now I lay it to rest with these awkward greetings which have transpired. I confess that I may have offended some in my growing eagerness, I beg you lay their concerns to rest. Plant the seed of wisdom and discernment in my heart and nurture it to fulness that I may sense and know those who are to be trusted and those who are not.
Morning Sun which wanes to Dust
And yields the night unto the Moon
To thee, oh Shalm, my life I trust
And beg thee watch me on this dune.
Grant that thy strength and vision be
Bestowed upon thy humble slave
That I might nature's defender be
'gainst abusive proud and vilest knave
Born of dust to walk the earth, and then to dust return
Yet stewards, we, brought here by birth, must not our calling spurn
For free and wild, unbridled, shall the course of nature run
And hapless, we, what e're befall, beneath the journey of the Sun
But woe betide the gears of man that seek to seize control
For wrathful He who hears nature's plea, brings abuse's final toll
And so devoted to this cause, we are the servants of the Shalm
With justice brought by bloody claws, bring nature's healing balm.
Malak is not interrupted during his prayers, and is completely devoted to his worship. As he is in his meditations, Omnifrost quickly shifts her gear, and is able to pursue Mizuki, who breaks into the dust cloud amazingly fast. Since Mizuki wants the companionship, I'll allow that Omnifrost is able to find her in the dust readily enough, but it would certainly be a good place to lose someone.
You two move quickly through the dust higher into the sky, then and level off. Now then, finding that thermal will be a bit trickier, simply because the air is rapidly cooling from the sun going down.
It takes a good moment, but you hit the thermal, and it begins carrying you up into the higher atmosphere. Soon you break through the dust proper and see, with all the suddenesss of hitting a wall, the stars overlooking this parched planet. Likewise you have the incredible feeling of nearly crashing into the enormous pale blue moon that looms over this planet, so large that the light it gives sends a halo that blocks much of the starline. You, likewise, see a much smaller moon, somewhat more red in hue, and crescent.
The air here is colder, fragile, but clean. You can see that this enormous cloud extends for several miles all around you. You can, now, from your vantage, make out the black spires of a small mountain range to your west, and a distinct break in the dust, opening to what looks like plains or at least open land of some sort to the east. The north is still a bit hard to gauge, though the dust thins toward the dark horizon. The south, though, is as if made from the dust itself.
LadyGlutter
3rd of October, 2008, 04:12
I stare at the moons, in awe. "Wow, too bad we can't see that from down there."
After a good long moment, I turn to look at where we came from. Is there any sort of relative distance I could judge, from where we came from? I'm sure that a map scale is a bit much, but is the open land to the east any closer to our camp vicinity than the small mountain ranges?
I'm feeling for Scratch vibes or any nuzzles or unexpected breezes constantly. I'm getting a bit worried, actually.
LightBringer
3rd of October, 2008, 04:38
Like Mizuki, I am a little bit slack-jawed. "You can say that again. This is gorgeous!" I notice the moonlight reflecting off the blue stone of my necklace, and out of habit tuck it back under the tunic.
Chris Chandler
3rd of October, 2008, 11:51
You have no sign or indication from Scratch. Whatever has occurred among the dunes, you were not pursued by your friend.
As a direct answer, yes, the open land to the east is a good bit closer to your camp, by at least a day's travel, than the mountains to the west. It is a good two days walk east to where you can identify terrain other than desert. It is closer to a four day hike to the actual mountains, though foothills are less than three days away, heading west. Travel north would remove you from the dust within three days or so. The south is a blanket -there is no real telling, as of yet, how long a trip would take to see clear skies and no dust heading south.
Doombot
I see you on the sands Camlost. I feel your breath. Will you kill them as you killed Kumbhakarna? It would do you well to return to the path of blood, man of the waking world.
What say have you, Voice? This is just a dream. Why should they die? Malak is on the trail of a corrupted mage, a cause that seems right enough to me. The others still hide behind words, but even so -- Jean was a mage, and I suffered her, gladly. I would even say that we were friends, as unusual as that sounds.
There is enough blood without me turning on them. Tell me, Voice: why is it so important for me to slay them? Are you worried that they pose a threat to you?
My eyes flicker and roll wildly beneath tightly closed lids. This dream is intense, almost real, with a quality that sets it apart from the others.
LadyGlutter
4th of October, 2008, 02:55
I try to memorize the terrain, "That really tells me all I wanted to know. It looks like east is our fastest way out of the desert. We can go back when you're ready."
Then I begin to circle Omnifrost, and fly in circles, playfully chasing and simply flying, as if I were still a child and these wings were new.
Chris Chandler
4th of October, 2008, 06:24
Aros -
You hear laughter, a joyous sound, which chills you to the bone.
You seem to think that I am somehow bound by such things as "threats" and "worry". No, it would simply be more expedient to kill them now rather than delay the inevitable. I also find it quite interesting that you so eager to kill on the word of a perfect stranger, when you know me so well
LightBringer
4th of October, 2008, 08:29
I'm perfectly ready to go back down, after so joyous flying.
"It's not a peaceful, and calm as the freefall between the planes was, but I've always loved this. I suppose Malak may be done by now." I start the descent.
Chris Chandler
4th of October, 2008, 09:43
Malak completes his prayer and Omnifrost and Mizuki light near the chimes. Aros, of course, will still have his conversation, should he wish.
The night is fully borne now, and the dune is dark. The wind is almost still, now, and the chimes, for the first time, are silent.
LadyGlutter
4th of October, 2008, 11:39
Not a big deal, but my intent was to land roughly where we took off, to give Malak space to finish his prayer.
Chris Chandler
4th of October, 2008, 11:43
Probably half an hour has passed from takeoff to landing, plus another 10 prior while the ladies were conversing and eating - Is that enough time to finish prayers and preparing for bed, Malak?
MadDogMaddux
4th of October, 2008, 12:23
Malak pray for about an hour, unless rudely interrupted by people kicking sand in his face. :P
Doombot
4th of October, 2008, 12:28
Why should I kill them? If nothing else, they may prove useful. Beyond that, they are good people. Well, Malak seems to be, at least; the others are not willing to prove themselves. If it is inevitable, then I see no reason to strike now. Besides, I know you only from before this place-- if you think I should doubt Malak's word, why should I listen to you? I know only as much about you as you have told me, which is little.
Chris Chandler
4th of October, 2008, 12:52
So, the ladies will still have a few minutes to linger before Malak retires.
You know everything about me, man of the waking world. You simply don't realize it yet. As for as those chaff before them. They shall be entertaining. Toy with the mice if you wish. I shall still be proven right.
LightBringer
4th of October, 2008, 13:01
After landing I sigh, and look around. "Thank you for the relaxing time Mizuki. I believe it's going to be a long night though." I just spend the remaining time sitting and waiting.
LadyGlutter
4th of October, 2008, 13:32
I smile. "Looks that way."
I also sit down and wait quietly. From time to time I get up and pace again, travelling up the windward side of the dune to the lee side, to the bottom, and back again, but always careful to stay a respectful distance away from Malak's worship.
MadDogMaddux
4th of October, 2008, 21:47
After about an hour praying, Malak stands and makes his way towards the rope. He secures his gear with that of Aros, then climbs the rope and goes to bed - all the while moving as quietly as he can.
Chris Chandler
5th of October, 2008, 06:04
Mizuki -
As you approach the lee side of the dune, you hear a familiar voice -
(this would be just as Malak is going to bed)
Thank goodness. I thought he'd never leave. We have big problems, sister.
LadyGlutter
5th of October, 2008, 08:36
I nod, but say nothing. I stoop down to draw in the sand, listening.
Chris Chandler
5th of October, 2008, 08:41
You dont see her, but you hear her sniff. "Do you not smell that? I think she followed us."
LadyGlutter
5th of October, 2008, 08:42
"Abigail?"
Chris Chandler
5th of October, 2008, 08:45
"Sure, I guess so. I suppose that was her name. Anyways, I smelled whatever was moving that meatsack around. It's nearby, but I think it's left. I wasn't about to get out in the open, though."
LadyGlutter
5th of October, 2008, 08:46
"Oh, but they're such friendly chaps!" I chuckle. "I can't imagine they'd have any problems with you! Which direction?"
Chris Chandler
5th of October, 2008, 08:49
Scratch snorts. "Sure, if friendly means stick on a pig-pull and roast you. I'm pretty sure she followed the dunes south, but like I said, I did not get out."
Mizuki, having relaxed around her friend, is speaking loud enough that you can hear her conversing in Sylvan, OmniFrost, though you can't catch what she's saying.
LadyGlutter
5th of October, 2008, 08:52
"How'd I know that we'd end up going south? Hmmmm... I'm not sure what to do about that. I went up pretty high up there, caught a thermal in fact. I still didn't see the end of this dust cloud to the south. The moons are really gorgeous up there, though."
Chris Chandler
5th of October, 2008, 08:54
"Moons? Well that just figures. Not a drop of water in this place, and the tides would be as tall as temples." She stops for a moment.
"Wh... what do you mean, go south? That's where it's going."
LadyGlutter
5th of October, 2008, 08:56
"What, you don't think I should strike before it grabs another... how did you poetically put that... meatsack? I mean, I can't let it going around possessing people til it amasses enough power to try the same stuff over again. Though, who knows if there's actually people here. Besides the rest of us misfits, that is."
Chris Chandler
5th of October, 2008, 08:57
"That's the thing! It clearly wants you. What makes you think it just can't step in when its outside of a body?"
((We'll freeze the dialogue for just a moment to allow Omni to potentially interweave any actions. And just to be clear, Malak was unable to hear Mizuki's friend, because Mizuki's friend waited until he was completely within the Rope Trick space.))
LightBringer
5th of October, 2008, 10:09
As I hear the talking, "Ahhh, seems she has found her pack."
I have no intentions of purposefully listening in, so I make my way to the shepard crook and chimes. I sit down, cross my legs, and begin listening to what this world has to say. I'm sure the environment would love to have someone to empathize with. This land must have some stories to tell.
LadyGlutter
5th of October, 2008, 11:20
"What? I didn't follow that."
Chris Chandler
5th of October, 2008, 14:07
That thing followed us here because it wants you to be it's newest home sweet home. It was bound to that Abigail woman's body, but now it's not bound at all. I think it's very dangerous.
LadyGlutter
6th of October, 2008, 01:11
"It was scared of me, so that actually makes sense, I guess. But, if it wants me, why would it go south?"
Chris Chandler
6th of October, 2008, 01:15
Well that's easy. Even if we are around mad people, they're at least people who pose a threat. You travelling south is effectively alone. Or it's a good gamble. If that doesn't happen, either by us not going south - she sounds very hopeful at that prospect - Or if we travel in force, then its gamble doesn't pay off. But what's a few days' travel in the desert for something that doesn't need water?
LadyGlutter
6th of October, 2008, 01:17
I laugh. "Alright, I'll stick with these guys and go east for a while. Are you going to keep out of sight? Eventually you know I'll slip up. I just like you too much to not talk to you sometimes." Grinning now.
Chris Chandler
6th of October, 2008, 01:20
You smell the still peculiar odor of when Scratch is amused at you - a mix of honeysuckle and earth that seems quite out of place here. East? What's east? I mean, I'd love to see the sand to south, and the sand to the west, and the sand to the north, but what's so special about east? Is it green sand or something? I mean, I'll go east for green sand.
Well, as long as the man with the compensation issues doesn't skewer me with one of his ballista bolts, then yeah, I'll show up. You can quite properly introduce me, if you like.
LadyGlutter
6th of October, 2008, 01:23
"It's just the shortest walk out of the dust cloud. Badlands that way. Otherwise, it's just arbitrary. It's two days that way, I think, three to mountains and the west, and a bit more north... not actually sure what's up there.
You mean the nosy one? Or the one that OmniFrost hit it off with so well?"
Chris Chandler
6th of October, 2008, 01:25
Oh, the chap with the thousand yard stare, I know where he stands. But the nosy one's a raving loon.
LadyGlutter
6th of October, 2008, 01:26
"Yeah, I'm a bit worried there, too. I told him I'm no angel, but that is going to come to bite me in a bit, too. Especially after you make your debut." I'm giggling like mad now.
Chris Chandler
6th of October, 2008, 01:28
And that lady, over on the windward side. She seems pleased as punch to be in the middle of a windswept desert like this. You know there's too much pollen on that bee's knees.
LadyGlutter
6th of October, 2008, 01:28
"Is that a sex joke?"
Chris Chandler
6th of October, 2008, 01:29
What would you know about that? You've kept a copper piece twixt your knees for so long you have a picture of the Duke of Uriel's face imprinted on your thigh.
LadyGlutter
6th of October, 2008, 01:31
I collapse, giggling. "Nuh-uh! I mean... wha... shut up! You don't know if that's true or not!"
Chris Chandler
6th of October, 2008, 01:32
Yeah I do. You let me watch.
Speaking of sleeping, do you want that pile of sand, or this pile of sand?
LadyGlutter
6th of October, 2008, 01:35
"I know that's a trick, because I can't say I do not or that there's nothing to watch.
I don't know. Would you like to talk to OmniFrost? I did promise to contribute some food once I found my pack, Missy. She may come offer to help me look. Plus, she'll see me propped up against the air to sleep, too. Though it might be better to wait til morning."
Chris Chandler
6th of October, 2008, 01:39
Omni-what? What kind of parents are those? Did they conceive her on a glacier? No, I don't want to meet some weird Ice Maiden tonight. Feel free, give her some of my food. I'll do without.
OmniFrost, even though you're not purposely listening in, the natural reaction of hearing your own name allows you to catch that snippet of the conversation. Mizuki is talking to some lady, perhaps.
LadyGlutter
6th of October, 2008, 01:41
"I don't know why she's named that! We just met. You know, people probably think your parents are pretty weird, too. You missed some awesome goat cheese, too, Fraidy Cat."
Chris Chandler
6th of October, 2008, 01:42
My parents are weird. And you're a one to talk about parentage. What are you, daughter 212?
LadyGlutter
6th of October, 2008, 01:44
I scoff. "You know very well it's number one and eleven, respectively."
I take my pack, and begin rummaging.
"Okay, so you think Malak's a loon, and OmniFrost is some weird ice maiden with... pollen on her knees, like that makes sense... and Aros? What's your take there? Honestly, he seems very forthright, if nothing else. I mean, Malak is too, but he's not really very socially acclimated. I think I can deal with Aros just fine, really."
Chris Chandler
6th of October, 2008, 01:52
Like I said, I know where Aros stands. You've seen that look before. He's probably very trustworthy, and will probably tell you exactly how it is. Now, there's two or three people in his head, so you'll have to listen carefully to know which one you're talking to. But past that, he's just like any soldier who has managed to live to tell the tale. Get him drunk and I'm sure he's great fun. 'Sides, you've got what that sort likes, and you know it.
Malak, I don't know, he really might not be crazy, but he certainly seems zealous enough. We both know too well that sort of person, too. Or do you not remember how much you loved Arcadia?
LadyGlutter
6th of October, 2008, 01:59
I laugh again. "Oh, but it's soooo tranquil and blissful and boring there! Point taken.
So, I suppose I'll let you do the honors tomorrow, and follow your lead. Will you choose Crow a la Scratch, or Humble Pie for breakfast?"
Chris Chandler
Scratch snorts and pops you in the back of your head. You're sure it was tail.
LadyGlutter
6th of October, 2008, 02:01
"Careful with that. They may think I'm a damsel in distress.
Good night, sis." I hug the air, then head back to where OmniFrost is, a pack over my shoulders now.
Chris Chandler
6th of October, 2008, 02:08
Let me know if OmniFrost would have wanted to interject at any time. There's plenty of room for that, of course - we just needed to knock out that large chunk of conversation that was in the making.
Otherwise, after the wind has died down completely, it's quite tranquil. You still have no view of the stars, even without the wind, because the dust around here may never settle. You don't hear even the familiar din of activity that goes with any place you've normally been. No skitters of lizards, no wings of birds, certainly no chirping of frogs, not even the buzzing of an insect. You know, there has to be something around, because you're able to breathe. You've traveled enough to know that there are places where even you are not welcome. Here, though, you've just got to find it.
LightBringer
6th of October, 2008, 06:49
I have no interjections to make. It's good to hear she has found what she was looking for. Her laughter lacks the stress that was evident earlier. I'm glad things are working themselves out.
I continue to focus on the evironment in this area trying to get a read.
Chris Chandler
This desert is ancient, thousands of years old. The spirit of this desert seems to have always been so, compared to those small wastelands that crop up from human wastefulness or other catastrophe. There is an underlying feeling of want, as if this ancient spirit once had more... something. The feeling that you get isn't exactly sad, because whatever it lost occurred so long ago, but perhaps just wistful. You sense that there are animals about, but they do not choose to be seen.
LightBringer
7th of October, 2008, 07:15
As the ancient spirit whispers, I wonder how it would respond to a spark of life.
Moments later, my eyes open as I hear the sound of footsteps in the sand. I watch as Mizuki approaches.
LadyGlutter
7th of October, 2008, 07:58
I sit down on the sand again, beside OmniFrost, and begin rummaging in my bag. First I lay down a cloth, then begin taking packages out.
"It looks like I've got more than my usual. I don't know what is in here, though. Lady Gennifer must have packed this extra stuff. Hmmm, pickles. And.. some kind of salted fish? And cute little pastries. And...."
I unflask a small bottle and sniff the contents, then pull my head back, eyes watering. I laugh, "Whoa!! That is definitely whiskey!"
And here I thought I was just walking down the path, yet she has me outfitted for a journey. I guess she was right, though. Well, anything strike your fancy?"
LightBringer
7th of October, 2008, 09:01
I smile, as the the spirit fades, and Mizuki sits down.
Those pastries look good. Hmmm, I don't think I have any milk. Oh well, I suppose whiskey will do. I laugh at the thought.
LadyGlutter
7th of October, 2008, 10:20
I laugh along with her, and offer her both in turn. "I don't think I'll mention to Aros that I was holding out on him, even though it wasn't intentional. I turned her down last night, but tonight is a different story. I hope you really do have enough water."
I pick out a pastry as well, and sample the pickles. Lady Gennifer certainly managed to make the cursed land she lived in produce to its fullest. The whiskey is single malt and quite smooth. I still grimace choking it down.
LightBringer
7th of October, 2008, 12:25
I can't help but laugh again as Mizuki's face twist into a grimace.
I take the whiskey, and take a swig. My eyes close as I inhale deeply, and then exhale a long breathe. Oh yeah...that's whiskey... all right. I take a bite of pastry hoping the sweet lessen some of the burn.
Yeah, Aros would probably love to have some of this. Maybe we should save some?
LadyGlutter
7th of October, 2008, 22:54
"Yeah, probably. He'd be more appreciative. Or... if things go badly, I might want to have saved some anyway." I chuckle.
I'm fairly quiet while enjoying the rest of 'dinner'.
LightBringer
8th of October, 2008, 00:08
I listen to the quiet of the night, as I finish the pastry, and enjoy the warmth spreading.
My mind continues to wander on the desert.
After some time, "I suppose I should get some rest before dawn."
LadyGlutter
8th of October, 2008, 01:18
I look up, startled out of my own thoughts.
"Do you need me to leave you be so you can deal with the bones? I'm so sorry. I wasn't thinking."
LightBringer
8th of October, 2008, 01:29
"I don't think Malak returned them to their resting place, but I'll check."
I stand and go to where the bones were. Have they been returned?
Chris Chandler
8th of October, 2008, 01:41
No, Malak kept them in his pack.
LightBringer
8th of October, 2008, 02:00
I return to Mizuki, "No, he still has them in his pack. You know, the rightful place for a spirit to rest. Although if the boy was killed on his home plane, his spirit should have been released then, but you can never tell when strong magicks come into play." I shrug, and sit back down.
LadyGlutter
8th of October, 2008, 02:19
"Well, hopefully there will be time to set it right still.
Good night then, OmniFrost. Thank you for the company. I'm going to that little hollow in the lee side of the dune, if you need me. I'm a little worried something nasty might have followed me here, so I think I'll keep watch for a while yet."
I gather my stuff and turn towards the direction where Scratch was.
LightBringer
8th of October, 2008, 02:48
"Very well. Good night." I watch as Mizuki heads over to the lee side of the dune.
"As if I didn't already have a good enough reason for staying awake." I shake my head.
I slide my pack off, and retrieve an old book I've been reading for some time. After some time I return it to the pack. I slide the pack back on, and make my way to the chimes. I spend the rest of the night listening to the chimes, and the desert. An hour before dawn, or as best as I can tell, when dawn is arriving, I'll make my decision.
LadyGlutter
8th of October, 2008, 03:47
I will head back to Scratch, change out of this dreadful dress, and take turns with her sleeping and watching tonight.
MadDogMaddux
8th of October, 2008, 04:24
For the first time in what seems like 10 years, I sleep the entire night through, heavy as a brick. (unless the GM says otherwise!)
Chris Chandler
8th of October, 2008, 06:12
The night continues without incident and the desert cools to a chill by sunrise, though there is no condensation on the sand, none at all actually. It is very dry. Both Omni (though her dehydration is mitigated) and Mizuki will be thirsty come morning. Most everyone here seems the "early riser" sort, and there's a big day ahead, so we start the awakening 'fore sunrise, which is probably a good thing.
MadDogMaddux
8th of October, 2008, 06:23
I stir first inside the Rope Trick, fading from a dreamless sleep into the pre-dawn of reality as the early traces of light trickle in through the "window". Glancing over, I see Aros still asleep, and determine to wait for him before I make my own exit. So I content myself with looking out the "window" into the world below, watching. And while it is quiet yet, I consider what spells may be of best service for the day.
LightBringer
8th of October, 2008, 06:34
I continue to sit by the chimes and watch the darkness turn to light. "I wonder what a sunrise looks like here." As I drink some more water, and wait for the others to show themselves.
LadyGlutter
8th of October, 2008, 06:54
I wake up and immediately search for a waterskin in my pack. "Mornin' " I say to Scratch. "Any more bad smells in the night?"
Doombot
8th of October, 2008, 13:33
I awake with a start, the customary beginning to a morning that does not begin with a soft, warm bed. I flash what I hope is a somewhat mollifying grin at Malak, and re-seat my dagger in the sheath at my belt. The tattered remnants of
(memories)
dreams still haunt my head. Images of me leading a small group of soldiers through the woods, a condescending voice, and bitter cold are all that remain, and soon they settle deeply into my subconscious, forgotten completely by my waking mind.
Rifling through my under-sized pack, I dig out a packet of rations and munch on them thoughtfully, first offering some to my new-found suite-mate.
Well, I suppose we should take a look around, eh? See what the others are up to, at least.
I drop out of the pocket dimension I created, not even bothering with the rope. Landing as softly as if I had just jumped off of a chair, I stand waiting for Malak to follow, softly rubbing my neck. It aches for some reason, as if it had been struck with a heavy blow.
Odd. Must be the dry air.
MadDogMaddux
8th of October, 2008, 15:35
I take the rations gratefully, grinning broadly but indulging Aros in the morning silence he seems to need. As Aros jumps out, I re-roll my bedroll, then follow suit - also disdaining the rope. Upon landing I briefly scan the area around us, then reach into a small pouch on my belt. After fishing around in it for a few seconds, I pull out a two gallon water skin and offer it to Aros, Best get an early start on hydration, who knows how long we will tread these sands?
Chris Chandler
8th of October, 2008, 23:53
Mizuki yawns and stretches -
Hr? No... no smells, except for yer arse. I think that whatever it was fled to sunnier climes. Looks like we'll be getting that, too.
OmniFrost, you do not sleep the night, and you will see the dust storm settle, slowly allowing the night sky to peek through, though by the time you are able to see stars, the larger moon has already passed by. You do not recognize the starfield to this place, but the sky is beautiful, deepest red fading to black.
The sun begins to peek out from the dunes and you feel the immediacy of your situation. An enormous Red Giant begins it's crawl above the horizon and you immediately feel the change in heat. You hear Mizuki awaken and have a short conversation with that same someone as last night.
Malak, you see, when you awake, that the daylight is actually apparent, rather than just filtering through dust. The air seems less than dusty, at least from your vantage, but it seems that there was, indeed, a storm last night. You can, likewise, see both OmniFrost and Mizuki preparing for their respective days, Mizuki drinking a bit of water.
Aros, after you awake from your... other life, you see that Malak is already awake. After breaking your fast you hop down to the dune, followed quickly by Malak.
The sky is quickly lightening into a dark ochre. The air has a bite to it, not dusty... almost like lightning struck here. The crook with the chimes is still in the sand, though it certainly is not chiming. There is no wind this morning. Visibility is great, though all you can see are dunes similar to the one upon which you are standing.
Okay, when Malak hits the ground that puts OmniFrost still sitting near the chimes, watching the sunrise, with Aros roughly 20 feet from her, and Malak immediately behind him. Mizuki is on the lee side of the dune, and can see and be seen by Omni, but not by Aros and Malak. Everyone is able to hear Malak's statement, though he is not particularly loud - things are simply very quiet out here right now.
Doombot
I thank you. I hope you have more where that came from; I have a little left, but I didn't have a sojourn in the desert in mind when I packed.
It looks as though we already lost one, I offer, casting a quick glance around the dunes.
LadyGlutter
9th of October, 2008, 00:59
I whisper, "Okay, whenever you're ready. You won't stay hidden forever you know."
I stand up, stretching, and walk over the dune to the group. This morning I'm wearing simple white robes, tied at my waist.
"Good Morning, everyone. And, nope, no such luck, Aros. I just camped away from the wind."
MadDogMaddux
9th of October, 2008, 04:53
Malak smiles brightly as the foursome gather, and offers the water skin to the others as well, Not to worry, Aros, I have plenty more in my pouch. I turn to the ladies, And how did you fare the night, miladies?
LightBringer
9th of October, 2008, 06:18
I'll decline the offer, "Thanks, but I'm fine."
Then to the question, "Quite well thank you. I'm still in one piece, and the night held many wonders, as will the day I'm sure."
LadyGlutter
9th of October, 2008, 06:34
"I'm doing well, also, thanks. For now I've got a bit of water. And to answer that -- if we go that way" I point east, "and you guys aren't too slow about it, and we're not badly sidetracked, I think we can get out of the sand in two days. Or a little longer to the west or even a bit further than that to to the north. And the south is just a dust cloud as far as I could tell."
MadDogMaddux
9th of October, 2008, 07:50
I furrow my brow, How many miles do you think, in each direction? And what are our travel options?
Then I pause to drink deeply from the waterskin.
LadyGlutter
9th of October, 2008, 08:55
"Well... without evidence to the contrary, I figured we'd go on foot.
As far as miles? I don't know... I'm used to parsecs." I grin.
"Seriously, I'd say... well, hm. I hardly ever walk on measured land and roads! How many miles? What an odd question from a hunter."
I wrinkle my nose, thinking.
It looked like what I'm used to walking in two days, taking into account the sand and heat. Maybe... 7 leagues, that's, oh, 50 miles east? That takes us to badlands. There are very rocky, jagged high mountains to the west, another day, so maybe 80.... And to the north there are vague shapes, but I'd say they're at least twice as far as the journey east. Maybe more. So 100 miles that way. I couldn't see well the land to the north, though."
MadDogMaddux
9th of October, 2008, 09:21
I smile broadly, then permit myself a chuckle at Mizuki's consternation, Forgive me, my training is not simply in hunting, but in also military scouting - It sometimes impacts my....terminology.
I stoop and begin to draw in the sand a basic map to reflect Mizuki's description. Well, I am certain that we can make our way to any of these places, but the question is to WHICH ONE? I am afraid that my only "lead" is this pile of bones, and none of us seems to have discerned the purpose of this wind-chime.
I rub the stubble on my chin.
So the question remains, why are we here specifically on this spot, and which direction is the best for us to move?
Doombot
9th of October, 2008, 12:26
It feels good to be working with a military scout again, I tell Malak as I hunker down to examine his map. Knight, mercenary, general -- whichever is true, it is reassuring to have another soldier present.
I'm used to going on foot, and I can make good time by doing so, even in the desert. Without knowing anything of this place, I can think of no reason why one direction should be any better or worse than another, or more likely to harbor a civilization.
As for this spot -- well, I'm not even sure why I'm in a vast desert to begin with, let alone why this particular dune. But the sooner we leave, the sooner we can get to a place that serves a decent CPA. Malak and I can walk, and I'm assuming you'll fly, I turn to address Mizuki. But what about you, OmniFrost? Are you up to walking across miles of barren desert?
LightBringer
9th of October, 2008, 13:11
My face and tone remain neutral, "Well, if you all would allow me a more practical explanation than divine intervention across multiple realities where, no offense intended, Obad-Hai's power may not necessarily reach.
As you'll notice the staff and chimes haven't moved even though there was a tremendous storm. It is more than likely a focus for planar travel. A stable position in time and space that can be activated to travel to another portal or focus. You just need to know which key activates it.
Malak, you said you stepped into a portal. If those are the bones of the murdered child, then your portal leads here. Mizuki was expelled from her location, and without direction. It's possible she simply crossed your portals path and was pulled in. A similar fate brought Aros and myself here.
As far as direction, I'm open to whatever. It should be fun no matter which way we go." A half smile creeps onto my lips. "Aros, I live to walk across miles of desert."
MadDogMaddux
9th of October, 2008, 13:51
I listen intently to OmniFrost's explanation, rubbing the stubble on my face and nodding, Certainly a logical explanation, I had not been studying it with such in mind, but rather for signs of Loric's passing or the blessing of the Shalm. At least it provides a decent reason for the four of us to be here at this time.
I pause, studying the map, So then it is entirely possible that none of you are here for the purpose for which I was sent. And yet, I have no clear direction of where to go from here. I must admit, this trail is some 10 years cold. In all likelihood it will require more than my skills in tracking to find him.
Again I pause, nodding to myself, So my quest may not be yours. I stand and look to the others, And yet I find it fortunate that we foursome have found one another. Would the three of you permit me travel with you and serve as your scout until such a time as we have need of parting ways? And perhaps if we DO come across Loric, perhaps you might consider aiding me in bringing him to justice?
LadyGlutter
10th of October, 2008, 01:40
I look at him. "What do you mean you have no clear direction? I just told you which way to go!" I grin.
"No, I'm just kidding, we can talk it over. I just don't fancy heading south at the moment, for the record. Oh, and I hadn't planned on flying, well.. not myself anyway. As far as Loric goes, well, perhaps I might consider leaves me enough wiggle room to say maybe, though let's deal with today first. In fact... I really think we need to have a discussion about accompanying each other, anywhere. I'm up for it, but I am not entirely sure you will be in a little while." I smile again.
Chris Chandler
Aros, OmniFrost, Malak, each of you see a creature walk up the dune, about the size of a courser. It, too, is on four legs, but that is where the similarities end.
You see a dragon... after a fashion. It is draconic, but it's scales are irridescent, reflecting all the colors of the rainbow. Its butterflylike wings are a beautiful platinum. It bears a sharp-toothed grin, though it glances nervously at Mizuki as it moves toward you. It has a long, prehensile tail that is flicking at the sand, seemingly with a mind of it's own.
H... hello.
The creature speaks in a voice that sounds soft, melodic and definitely female. She bows on a foreleg, then continues in her greeting.
I'm Scratch, M... Mizuki's sister.
MadDogMaddux
10th of October, 2008, 03:45
As Scratch crests the hill, I initially startle, simply reacting the the presence of a new creature. Granted, most people would not NOTICE the reaction, as the instincts of a hunter automatically take over. Its more like I briefly freeze. Then as Scratch speaks and it registers in my mind just WHAT she is, my eyes dilate with excitement and a broad smile explodes across my face. At first I think to stand but then midway stop, and instead kneel, bowing my head briefly.
(speaking in Draconic)
Oh Scratch, you are......BEAUTIFUL! And....I've never seen - much less MET - a Faerie dragon of such stature! We are...I am HONORED to have you with us. I'm turning my head quickly between Mizuki and Scratch, grinning somewhat stupidly, amazement and excitement clear in my eyes Sisters? I laugh warmly, Oh my what an amazing surprise! (/Draconic)
LightBringer
I have to say, wings aside, there's not much of a family resemblance. But, if Mizuki is going to be traveling with us, then you are likewise welcome to accompany us.
What? I ask, smiling at Mizuki. You expected a vehement denial? Another tirade on the immoralities of dragons? Eberronian dragons may be untrustworthy, but we are clearly no longer in Eberron.
Tell me, Scratch, what sort of dragon are you? I've never seen a dragon as colorful as you, although I admit my experience is rather limited.
Chris Chandler
10th of October, 2008, 05:58
Scratch is a little taken aback by the immediate attention. She'll address each of you in turn -
Malak, she listens to you, and has what might be an incredulous look on her face. When you finish, she laughs like a song -
<I'm very happy to meet you, Malak. I'm just a youngster, really, but have put some size on me. Don't be fooled, though. I'm still a lovely dancer.>*
She bats her eyes in a coy manner.
Scratch smiles her toothy grin as you speak to her, OmniFrost
<Oh, it's nice to meet you too. I hope Mizuki didn't keep you up with her snoring. She's a regular dragon.>**
Scratch looks at Aros pleasantly enough and smirks as he speaks to Mizuki. When he finishes, she shakes her head -
I'm the kind of dragon that hangs around with her, and let me tell you, she may be easy on the eyes, but she's no rose. You think it's tough soldiering along day in, day out because some king said Jump? Try to follow the leaf on the wind one day.
She laughs at her own joke then replies properly -
I'm what scholars like to refer to as a Faerie Dragon, or a Fey Dragon, because we have a bad habit of keeping company of sylphs, nymphs, and other feykin. We're... we're not really faeries. Well, except for little Seerg... Er, right. Faerie Dragon. Scratch. That's me.
She shakes her head again her rainbow scales shimmering in the morning light.
Oh, and I can so understand why you think dragons are icky. I mean, most of them are unbearable. I mean, my friend Kiyo used to have tea with a old silver broad named Galeru who was just the worst! She'd prattle on about folks for hours, never saying a thing that wasn't politics! I much prefer a dumb old black swamper - They'd just as soon eat you as look at you, but at least you don't have to listen to gossip.
She glances back toward Mizuki and sticks her tongue out at her.
MadDogMaddux
10th of October, 2008, 07:26
I shrug and look at the others, Actually before we leave, I'd like to make a suggestion. In my morning preparations, I spent some time preparing a spell that will give me a clear understanding of the terrain around us for roughly 50 miles around. It will only take a few seconds to cast, and may give us a clearer picture with which to work. Or, and I nod towards Mizuki, if you would be so gracious as to carry mne, and if I could ride with you a ways in that direction, maybe halfway, it would allow us to be slightly more certain of our direction.
LightBringer
LadyGlutter
10th of October, 2008, 07:50
I was standing, ready to head with OmniFrost, but then Malak speaks and I look at him in disbelief. "I... beg your pardon? Why would you waste your divine energies? Do you not believe me? And whom do you propose riding?!"
MadDogMaddux
10th of October, 2008, 08:22
I blush (not that anyone can see, as my skin is so dark), I do not propose to RIDE anyone, and forgive me if I cause offense. I.....can turn myself into a Bat, but my flight speed is nothing compared to that which you demonstrated yesterday. However, as a Bat, my weight would be insignificant, I would think. I shrug, Well, I don't FEEL heavy, when I'm a bat. I grin a little sheepishly.
As far as why would I "waste" the spell, I felt that perhaps it might grant us to be aware of any animal life, gatherings of nomads, or other details that might inform our decision as to which direction we would choose to head.
I shake my head, as if clearing my head, But if you are both convinced that your reconnaisance is sufficient and that East is the best path, then I am willing to defer.
I raise my eyebrows at the whole exchange between Malak and Mizuki.
It does not matter to me which direction we take; East is as good as West, as far as I'm concerned, and I'm perfectly alright with the group concensus. However, getting the lay of the land would be a wise idea. 'Forewarned is forearmed,' as we used to say. Malak, if you can use your resources to to acquire intel on the surrounding area, then by all means do so. Better the devil we know than the one we don't.
LightBringer
"That went better than I thought, so far."
I look at Aros, and then Malak, then from one to the other as I speak, "If that all you want to know all you have to do is ask. This desert is older than any other desert I've ever been in. It's spirit knows nothing else. There are animals around, but you won't find them. At least not without doing lots of damage to the dunes. They are experts at hiding, and don't want to be found. There are no nomads around. There is no one here. Just us, and the things we brought. South is out, and east is the shortest distance to something other than desert. I vote east."
MadDogMaddux
10th of October, 2008, 11:57
Of all the arrogant pretension....She KNEW and simply expected us to follow her without question!
LadyGlutter
10th of October, 2008, 12:31
I look from person to person. I start walking, and my voice gets louder in case I'm not followed. If I'm not, then I will stop and turn back towards the group, but I'd rather move.
"East, right? I've got a bit to say, if you'll bear with me as we walk. I don't mind you doing whatever you want to do. I've already covered this area is all. I thought it might be good to save your spell when that 50 mile radius covered new land.
Now, as far as you hitching a ride halfway there, I didn't know you could turn into a bat, but really,I hardly know you, Sir. The request sounded a bit forward, when I imagined me carrying you that way. Beyond that, there's the issue that I don't fly all that fast. Yes, I cover probably four times the distance flying... but if you and I flew together half way, then back, that'd put us at wasting half the day. The only reason I was able to see so far forward was that the air currents cooperated with me, and I rode a thermal up pretty high."
Also, OmniFrost just gave you some information about herself, and still you seem to scold her... I think that my sister and I here just demonstrated very well possible reasons for caution. I couldn't give her away without her permission. By the way, very observant, Aros, it's a relationship, not biology." I smile at the soldier.
"Anyway, yesterday you were railing about all non metallic dragons. Today, you're positively thrilled to meet her. I was worried. Maybe you'd think I was Loric, or Scratch was your demon wife in another disguise? I'm very grateful that you welcomed her so warmly. I appreciate it, very much."
I smirk, Railing? I think that may be a tad extreme. Conventional wisdom where I come from is that chromatic dragons by and large have a fell bent. Faerie Dragons, however, are not generally considered chromatic.
I shrug, But I understand your fears, and am grateful for your willingness to be seen, Scratch.
I turn to Aros, shrug, and begin walking as well.
I chuckle slightly at Malak's comment, then continue to walk when Mizuki makes it past me.
After Malak's next statement I chime in, "I am no Seer Malak. I simply have been around. As far as talents, I did not know you had the capacity to change into a bat Malak. Perhaps you should tell us more of your talants? Or you can simply accept that each of us has many talents and abilities that we will discover as we go. If you must assign a trait to me though, you may say I am,... a Wanderer."
Doombot
We may each have various talents, but waiting until they make themselves known is a piss-poor method of going about it. As a pseudo-military commander, I made damn sure that I knew the full capabilities of every mercenary under my direct command. Given that we are in a situation where we will likely be required to depend on one another's talents and abilities to survive, it is necessary to know what your designations are. Malak and I have already disclosed a great deal of information, more so than you have, Omni.
Malak is not the only one irritated at OmniFrost's tight-lippedness. As a
(Captain)
commander, I am used to full disclosure, and direct confrontation usually expedites the process. Usually. This young woman is plainly not used to such military straightforwardness. Still, it's best to figure out what sort of tools are at one's disposal before one tries to build a castle.
I smile at Aros, holding up one finger, and speaking in a normal tone, "One, I don't care about your 'pseudo-military experience'." Then another finger, "Two, I am not a mercenary in your command." Then another, "Three, I just gave you a designation." Then another, "Fourth, and finally, I'm headed east. If you can't handle not knowing everything about me, like where I came from, what talents I excel at, when I had my first bleed, and who was my first lover, then I suggest you go another way." I turn back towards the east, and start walking again.
MadDogMaddux
I first nod in agreement with Aros, then shake my head in amusement. Truly, I think that this is simply a matter of each of us approaching our situation from a completely different perspective. Aros and I have the shared perspective of military experience, but apart from that even he and I have very little in common as far as shared experience goes.
I pause, turning to Mizuki and then to Omni, It is not the fact that Omni did not tell me that she could speak with the spirit that baffles me, it is that she told me "all you had to do is ask" when I had no way to know that I COULD ask. I shrug, I might as well ask her to teleport us to the nearest populated city, since I do not know whether or not she can do as much. Perhaps she can do this as well, but has not felt inclined to share?
I continue walking, As far as wasting my divine energies, I have methods of recycling said energies. I did not feel it would be wasteful. In fact, I have also prepared a spell which will grant us greater endurance as we walk this journey, if the four of you would desire to avail yourselves of its benefits.
I interject suddenly. "Hey, can I interrupt for just one second? Is Omni okay, or do you prefer OmniFrost?"
Doombot
Such insolence! If only she were a Knight! But then, if she were, she would be much better trained, and far less intolerable.
The first two points are almost painfully obvious, and your excuse of a designation is next to useless. I have met many wanderers, most of them beggars and madmen. If you wish to be cryptic and unhelpful, then by all means, carry on. But until such time as you deign to be helpful, I will consider you a non-critical member of this already under-manned squad. Dismissed.
I turn to Malak, in hopes of engaging someone far more reasonable. I would enjoy any boon you can offer. I'm sure that such a trek is not beyond my means, but the easier it is, the better. Likewise, if ever I am able to enhance one or all of us, at this I throw a withering stare in OmniFrost's direction, I will do so.
LightBringer
11th of October, 2008, 07:18
I stop and laugh, turning back to Aros again, "Ooooo, I've been dismissed. That just breaks my heart,.. and just for the record, will you be offering that 'enhancement' before, or after, you try to cut me down with your mighty mage slaying sword? Yeah, I just bet you wish I'd tell you my secrets."
LadyGlutter
My eyes go wide and I stop. "Nevermind."
I watch, very interested in how this goes, my face neutral.
I begin to answer Aros when OmniFrost chimes in, blinking I step back and turn instead to Mizuki and Scratch, **Would either of you like me to cast Tern's Persistence on you? It will not speed us up, but will allow us to travel further before resting. I shake my head just slightly as my eyes drift back towards OmniFrost, speaking lower **I will not disguise the fact that I dislike her attitude - it strikes me as very elitist and condescending, but I do not think that there is any benefit to be gained from waiting around for these two to actually come to blows. Perhaps the three of us can work together to actually get us on our way?
I smile easily to myself, taking comfort in the fact that I've at least managed to irritate her as much as she irritates me. A petty victory, but a victory nonetheless.
That all depends on when you prove yourself to be a liability, rather than an asset. At the rate you're going, I'd say that will be just after lunch.
I'm sorry Mizuki, I believe you were saying something? Addressing OmniFrost, I believe. Turning my attention back from OmniFrost, I keep pace with Malak and the others in an attempt to keep things moving.
I embrace the empty, emotionless state that has saved me so many times. 'Keep a clear head,' they used to say. A soldier needs strength to swing a sword, an officer needs a discerning mind to achieve victory. Who they are, I'm not sure -- sergeants from long-lost infantry days, or lieutenants from that flyover in Xen'drik -- but their advice is solid.
A look of disappointment quickly passes over my face, as I turn back to the east.
"Yes, she was kind enough to be concerned about how I prefer to be addressed, which is OmniFrost. Friends call me Omni.
And before that Malak asked about teleporting. I actually pay quite a bit of attention to what goes on around me, thank you.
And to answer your question Malak, yes I could teleport us to the badlands, but what fun would that be? I was actually looking forward to the walk. Besides I figured Aros wouldn't want to chance that."
I stop, turn, and stare at OmniFrost, blinking - which I seem to be doing a lot of lately. After a moment, I shake my head AGAIN, Of course, your spells are yours to use as you please. They are not our commodities to command. And since we do not know WHERE we are going, there is no need for us to hurry, is there?
I smile at her with a smile that is clearly forced, and continue walking east, Naturally it will be good for us to simply take our time crossing a desert, a pleasant stroll, if you will. After all, my quest is ten years old, and no one else has any pressing matters, so why not take our time to enjoy the heat and sand? After all, I've already demonstrated that I can and will have enough water for everyone, and I'm sure SOMEONE here can conjure enough rations for however long our wandering may take it.
And so I continue heading east, lengthening my stride.
LightBringer
My tone has return to it's normal carefree tone, "Those were my thoughts exactly. The sun, the heat, there's nothing like it." I twirl taking in the sun, "I thouight it would give us time to bond." Looking at Malak as I stop, "If I'm the someone you are refering to, I don't really do food."
Chris Chandler
Scratch continues East, as is everyone at this point (yay for... common... goals?) and mutters under her breath - everyone can hear it, of course, but she's saying it low.
Can't just have a understanding that we're all bleeding lost and don't know anything. Oh, no... Can't worry about the problem. Have to worry about the damn pecking order. Humans are such idiots.
She's not speaking to anyone specifically, and the color of her scales shifts to a dominant darkening iridescent red. She flicks her tail in agitation at the sand.
LadyGlutter
11th of October, 2008, 13:08
I bump Scratch with my hip, then hop on as she tilts forward, in our practiced way.
"Alright... This is nice and uncomfortable, but at least I guess we all know where we stand. Honesty is a good foundation, at least. So, onward, til we really find out where our various talents lie." At this point, I'm actually amused, and it creeps into my voice.
This is just too ridiculous for words. The ghost and demon were more pleasant than this crew is turning out.
"Oh, and if you want to cast the spell, you ought to cast it on Scratch, not me. She's doing the work right now. And... I've got some fish and stuff, yeah, we won't starve for a while yet."
MadDogMaddux
I nod and step over to Scratch, extending my hand. If I may?
