Each of you has time to grab one, and only one item before you head to the lifeboats. The rest of your equipment has to stay behind, or you will.
Don't worry, I will give you the chance to recover your equipment.

Very glad I picked archers. Can you imagine getting warhorses off in this?
BP you haven't given reason for haste. From your post it sounds like the ship is stuck fast on rocks. Also I don't fit in a lifeboat. What do I estimate my chances of swimming to shore? Swimming (unskilled) [roll0]
Black Plauge
24th of February, 2008, 03:25
You need to move quick because the sailors who are manning the lifeboats aren't going to wait for you (this was made clear by the captain when you first came on board and he outlined the rules of the ship). While the ship may be stuck, so long as the storm continues, the wind and waves could break it apart at any moment so the sailors aren't planning on sticking around for that to happen.
Also, the boat does have a longboat capable of holding a centaur. It only has one, though, so if you're not on it you should plan on drowning. With the sea as rough as it is, the Swim DC is 25 (yes, this is higher than "stormy water" in the PHB, the storm is that bad), no place for anyone who can swim, let alone those who can't.

Bp can you give us some idea of the local sit? Location, climate, terrain, fauna & flora, number of surviving sailors, who is commanding them, is there anyone left who can read a rutter, foodstocks, etc.
Black Plauge
4th of March, 2008, 03:29
Climate and vegitation are those of a temperate forest in late summer/early fall. Similar to the mid-atlantic region of the US (Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina) near the shore. Small fauna is also typical of that kind of environment. You have not encountered any large or magical fauna yet, so you can only guess as to what might be in the area.
The forest comes down right to the beach (i.e. there is no dune buffer between the beach and the "inland" forest) and is thick/tall enough to hide any small variations in elevations from your eyes. You can see that there are no mountians sticking up over the tree line.
There are 12 surviving sailors. None is taking a clear leadership role and the only ship's leadership who you are familiar with are the captain, first mate, and navigator, all of whom are dead. You will have to ask the sailors if you want to know more about their skill set.
No food was brought ashore during the storm, so any that survived would still be on board the ship. You'll have to explore to find out what is left and what condition it is in.

Link, the ship is stuck on rocks well away from shore. Are you jumping into the water and trying to swim for shore? Hopping into one of the cockshells and trying to row your way to shore alone? Clambering onto the rocks the ship is stuck on and making whatever way you can across them? Some other method I haven't thought of? I need to know how you intend to carry out the desire get away from the ship because it makes a big difference in what happens next.
Black Plauge
11th of March, 2008, 07:35
Benicus, I need to know what you plan on doing about the captain's locked chest (if anything).
Link, the cockshell makes it back to shore without incident if you care to post again. Just don't try to do too much once you get back to shore as I'm trying to maintain simultinatity for the PCs despite their being split up.
Grognard, Teliq is still gleaning when the cockshell returns to shore, and will be for a few more saat (until about lunch time). If you want to play that out, feel free. I'll only step in if something interesting happens (or could happen) or when it's time to move on.

BP do I owe you five more rolls or are you taking the first one as generic?
Black Plauge
12th of March, 2008, 02:58
One roll is sufficent for your gleaning. Survival isn't specific about how long the gleaning takes, but does say that you're reduced to half-speed for overland travel while doing so. As a result, I estimate that for you to find and collect all the food that your check result indicates, requires about a half-a-day's worth of work, or 5 saat in local time keeping. You can break this up if you want, but I figured that barring something interesting happening, it is what Teliq would be doing until lunch time when the all sailors return from the ship for the first time.
Grognard
12th of March, 2008, 06:10

Black Plauge
14th of March, 2008, 08:28
So, lunch time. Teliq has finished his gleaning (though he can try again in the afternoon if he so desires since you don't seem to be going anywhere). Vilmos has been spoiling for a fight for a few saat, but none has been offered. Gel was able to get his stuff to shore, but not the loot from the captain's quarters.
I know Grognard wanted to talk a bit with the sailors, and this is the chance for that kind of thing to happen so I'll let you guys describe how you're going to handle lunch.

I'm sorry I didn't update yesterday. I've been sick since Tuesday and I ran out of steam before getting to this game when I went online yesterday. I'm feeling much better now, however, and so everything should be back to normal tomorrow (cross your fingers and knock on wood).
Ben, if you want, you can have Gel take a position in the argument on board ship and I'll figure out how that influences the decision. Otherwise I'll simply resolve it between the sailors.
Next update will take us through dinner, so if you'd planned on doing anything else during the afternoon, now is the time to post it.

I don't know that it will be totally necessary to fully flesh out the hierlings, other than to state that they are first level characters in NPC classes (warrior, expert, commoner, or aristocrat). They shouldn't be as important as the PCs to the story line, and really it will be more in their interactions with the PCs that the become important, not their stats.
If certain things become important, we'll start keeping track of them.

Ok,plans.
1) Invite those who see normaly (read low-light or darkvision, read pc's) to accompany me on a dusk hunt/waterfinding. Streams and pools at dusk being good hunting.
2)Inspect shelters.
3)Inspect longboat repairs.
4)Take longboat out to collect broached cask.See night vision.
5)Plot/bond with mercs
6)Establish moral superiority over sailors/discuss getting us off this rock!
7)Check wounded.
8)Recon
I figure if I roll over on my back, balance one objective on each hoof and juggle the rest in my hands, might get somewhere.
Sigh, Teliq will pick from that list as seems best at the time.

BP if we aren't going to fight anything (not complaining, quite happy with a survival game) how about some story XP?
Black Plauge
3rd of April, 2008, 09:29
I have plans for a story award. It'll come at the end of the first story encounter. Since you're still in the middle of it...
As for not fighting, you're only not fighting because you've managed to avoid all the possible fighting encounters that have cropped up thus far. I'm actually quite surprised at this. I was expecting you guys to be a bit more bold and thus get into a bit more trouble. Everyone has been playing fairly cautious though, so said combat simply hasn't developed.
Oh, and don't worry. As you've been avoiding my planned combat encounters, I've been upping the planned story award, so you're not missing out on XP by playing the way you've been playing.

Black Plauge
23rd of June, 2008, 23:41
1 point transfers from the reserve to your hp during each minute of light activity (i.e. not in combat).
Characters with Endurance (like Teliq) can also spend a move action to instantly convert a number of reserve points to hit points equal to their level. In Teliq's case that's 3 per move action (2 monstrous humanoid + 1 psychic warrior).
The full house rules governing hit points and reserve points are here. (http://online-roleplaying.com/forums/showpost.php?p=133564&postcount=2) The additional use of the Endurance feat is here. (http://online-roleplaying.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5194)

Black Plauge
24th of June, 2008, 10:33
If you are at full hp, any healing you receive (either magical, or natural) will be credited to your reserve until it's at full to.
So, Teliq is currently a level 3 character and thus has a natural healing rate of 3 hp for a solid night's rest. If he's at full hp, he'll get that many reserve points back instead (unless he's at full reserve too). If you get a full day of bed rest, that goes up to 6 hp. If a character with the heal skill tends to you you can go as high as 12 for the full day's bed rest.

Hmm... Couple of things wrong with those numbers:
While a +4 modifier to hit is not unreasonable for NPCs, it's too high if they're using Rapid Shot to shoot twice.
Also, there was only one critical threat in the bunch (the 23) so damage isn't quite so high.
That said, you still killed the girallon, so it's no big deal.

The NPCs don't have exceptional stats. That's reserved for PCs. The NPC stats are the average array for their race (in this case all 10's and 11's). If that wasn't the case the NPCs would easily outshine the PCs by sheer force of numbers.
Also, the NPCs have NPC classes, not PC classes. In this case your hirelings are Warriors, not Fighters.
