View Full Version : Gladiator Tournament II - Loser's Bracket: Yarden vs. Elgin

Black Plauge

As tough as Yarden was, he was unable to last against Spikey's relentless wrestling, and Elgin got what was essentially a bye into this match.

Still, this has the potential to be a good match, I think. Yarden's durability will be matched up against the flexibility of Elgin's magic.

Bah! Elgin's magic hasn't helped him much yet, why should this be any different.

I think he's just been unlucky. Elgin, Yarden, introduce yourselves to the crowd.

Yarden:
Crowd Attitude: 4.25
HP: 221

Elgin:
Crowd Attitude: -0.25
Spells: 7/7/7/5/3
HP: 104

Grindle:
HP: 52

Yarden and Elgin have 24 hours to post their round 1 action.

Yarden appears in the ring and quickly takes in his situation. Looking up at the huge bear he just scowls. "And they would have to put us on opposite sides of the arena." Yarden raises his voice to shout, "Elgin, if you agree to meet me at least half way I won't take to flying."

Having made his offer Yarden moves away from the bear and attempts to jump on the platform there before performing his weapon drill.

OOC:
Move to K8 jumping on the platform. Jump [roll0]
Perform Weapon Drill [roll1]
Axe and Winged Shield in hand.
Glove of storing worn on left hand (shield hand).
Dodge opponent is Elgin.

Chris Chandler

Elgin smiles toward his competitor holding a hand to his ear, hamming for the audience -

What did you say?! What?!

Elgin moves along the edge of the row of platforms, jumping upon the last, proceding to spin his halberd in a expertly executed routine.

His fierce familiar, Grindle, scurries to the side of the platform, waiting.

[Free Action to ham to the crowd and to activate boots of speed, move action to move and jump to N-33 (+35), then perform a weapon drill (+25).

Unless stated otherwise, dodge opponent will remain Yarden for the duration of the match.]

Most interesting, Yarden - do try and keep up, my good dwarf!

Elgin focuses an initial burst of energy to leap down then onto another platform. Pausing for a moment, he casts a quick defensive spell.

Grindle the mighty advances to the rear, out of the reach of his nearby opponent.

[Move action to move to L-24, jumping to impress, then cast Shield. Deactivate boots as a free action. Grindle will withdraw to the square Elgin left, taking the route N-36, N-35, then climb to M-35, using the perpendicular wall to brace (-5 to DC), then to N-33.]

Elgin laughs -

Now, I know you can move faster than that, Yarden.

[Grindle continues to I-24. Elgin continues to wait patiently]

Lord Twig

"I get where I'm going fast enough." Yarden gages his distance. "Now let's see if you are man enough to stand and fight, or if you are going to run away!"

With that Yarden closes the distance and hops up on the platform, swinging his axe in a preemptive attack to ward against the spinning halberd he knows is coming.

OOC:
Move to K22, hop up on the platform at K23. Jump [roll0]

Yarden reels from the pounding of the spinning halberd. He realizes after the first hit that the ancient techniques of the Dwarves to avoid giant humanoids for some reason is not effective against giant-sized Humans. He shakes his head to clear the ringing and rolls to his feet.

Elgin’s appearance next to Yarden triggers Yarden’s readied action. Since Yarden can reach Elgin where he stands, the 5' step that was part of the readied action is not necessary and will be ignored. Also, because Elgin’s action is complete at the time he appears next to Yarden, Yarden’s initiative will be set to be just below Elgin, not above him, because he has not interrupted Elgin’s action.
Yarden attacks Elgin. 42 vs. AC 24. Hits. Deals 22 damage (max damage). This provokes an AoO from Elgin thanks to Karmic Strike. Crowd attitude towards Yarden improves 1 step.

Action!

Elgin's used his magic to close with Yarden quickly. Now, that left him vulnerable to attack, but Elgin took advantage of that to pull Yarden into an attack that left him vulnerable to a counter attack.

Yarden has 24 hours to post his round 9 action.

"If your afraid to get hit your in the wrong Business!" Yarden yells as Elgin bounces around and pulls his bow. "Target practice it is then."

When Elgin bursts into multiple copies Yarden's eyes narrow and his mouth sneers almost involuntarily. "Oh dear," he says as he floats back, drops his axe and pulls his bow, "how will I ever choose the right one?" In practiced fashion Yarden draws, nocks and let's an arrow fly directly at the real Elgin.

OOC:
5' step back to L25. Drop axe and pull shield into glove as free actions. Draw bow from efficient quiver as a Move action. Shoot Elgin as a standard action, targeting the real Elgin (possible because of Pierce Magical Concealment feat).

Note: After rereading the text to the Karmic Strike feat, I realized that it is something that a character should decide to use (or not use) each round, much like the Dodge feat. Thus, because Elgin didn’t specify that he would use it each round unless otherwise stated, I should have removed it from his stat block a few actions ago (not that the 4 points of AC makes a difference in the outcome of this round).

Well, Yarden's not a bit fooled by the multiple Elgins from the looks of it.

Yarden is not surprised to see Elgin abandon his bow after Yarden displayed his ability to pick out the real Elgin from the images. He is surprised, however, to find that Elgin moved all the way up to him so recklessly. Apparently the Kensai considered him unarmed, a foolish assumption considering the spikes protruding from every corner of his armor. The armor that Yarden is so comfortable in that it might as well be a part of him.

"It seems I once again have to demonstrate that these spikes are not just a decoration," Yarden says conversationally. Just as Elgin steps into mêlée range Yarden drops his bow and brings his shield back to his hand. Yarden immediately floats up a few inches and lurches forward. Leading with his shield Yarden twists at the last moment to bring his shoulder spike around and strait toward Elgin's head, quickly followed by bringing his knee spike up under the shield then twisting back to shove first his left then right elbow spikes in toward Elgin's middle.

After the vicious combo Yarden floats back off the platform to survey the damage.

OOC:
Drop bow and call shield back to hand from glove as free actions. Full attack with armor spikes (once again ignoring the images) the 5' step to L26.

The clerics were able to catch Elgin in time, however, so he'll live to fight another day.

Yarden watches Elgin crumble to the ground as he floats away. A quick glance to the tournament clerics confirms that Elgin is not dead and that he has won the match. He floats calmly back to the platform to retrieve his weapons.

Once more he finds himself covered in blood, his own and his opponents, but this time he is victorious. After bending to pick up his ax he thrusts it high in the air to the cheers of the crowd. The deep rumbling of his dwarven fans, all chanting "ROCK! ROCK! ROCK!", is an undertone to the general shouting.

Finally abandoning his stance he almost staggers before regaining control. He allows his shield to carry him back to stables where he can get his many wounds treated.
