I'd say my wizard can take on at least 3 at once.
As I posted several days ago, I'm more interested in starting the challenge at 3 cats, so we can either run this round as is, or just add another cat to the map right now.

With either 2 or 3 cats in the arena, the starting position is fine, and Mr. Protagonist will cast Shield on himself and draw his dagger. His hawk familiar will stay in his square.

To save time again, his action for the second round (after the preparation one) will be to cast magic missile at a random cat. Again the hawk will not move.

Orange Cat moves forward 30 feet.

Hiro has only a moments hesitation as he contemplates killing the other cat. But he is the Hero after all, and he blasts the other cat into oblivion with his second magic missile.

Sorry this took so long. I've been distracted by RL things.

Lets go with 5 at once. That seems manageable but not overwhelming for his meager capabilities. ;)

Several rounds at once to save time, something like as follows:
1 (Preparation): Cast Mage Armor and draw dagger.
2: Magic missile nearest cat.
3: Repeat round 1.
4: Move (if the cats aren't in melee yet, but I think they will be) and attack them with the dagger. Hawk will also attack.

Note: I did not perform your last action because the damage taken puts you in a critical position.

The hawk also got an AOO when they entered his square last round.

Hiro feels the terrible claws of his enemies digging deep, and decides that he ought to make his stand against the horrors of the world here and now. He will destroy them or die trying!

Stepping back, he thrusts at the sinuous serpentine felines that have thus far evaded his strikes and cuts at them again when they come after him. (5' step east, attack with dagger)

Initiative:
Hiro 21

Hawk gets an AOO because I'm retarded and forgot it. Hawk attacks: 15. Hit. Hawk deals 2 damage. Cat dies. This miraculously heals Hiro 1 HP.

Hiro steps to C4 and attacks: 5. Miss.

Hawk attacks: 21. Hit. Hawk deals 1 damage.

Cats attack Hiro, provoking AOOs. Hiro attacks: 19 and 22 (crit). Hit. Hiro deals 4 and 12 damage. Cats die.

Hurray! Hiro managed not to die first! It was close, though... To the next round!!

Icebird

Hiro does a quick victory lap of the arena before announcing to the judges that he'll face seven of the critters next. And this time he'll use different spells - picking them off one at a time is no longer effective, it seems.

Prepared 1st level (0th are the same): Mage Armor, Sleep x2

In the preparation round, Mr. Protagonist again casts mage armor and draws a dagger. For round 2, he casts sleep, aiming to hit as many of the cats as he can with the 10ft burst, putting up to 4 to sleep unless they make DC 14 will saves.

4 HP
AC 17 (including mage armor)
+2 attack with dagger for 1d4+2
up to 4 AOOs per round

Hawk:
2 HP
AC 21 (with mage armor shared)
+5 claws for 1d4-2

Having reduced the number of opponents to a manageable level, Hiro Protagonist steps (5') backwards and attempts to destroy the remaining feline foe with his dagger as the hawk goes for it's neck.

Hiro steps out of reach of the remaining kitty and stabs it in the mouth. The hawk, having attracted some unwanted feline attention, circles the area.

(5' step, attack. Hawk moves to L3, still out of reach upwards. If he kills the kitty, next round charge one of the remaining ones. If it still lives, attack it again. Either way, the hawk will take a full round action next round to coup'de'grace one of the sleeping cats.)

Hiro:

up to 4 AOOs per round

Hawk:

Cats move to L3 because they cannot attack Hiro.

Giving an attempt at a ferocious yell, Hiro charges the cats menacing his fine feathered friend. The bird continues with its intentions, bloodily butchering the blissfully-sleeping 'bomination.

Charge to K3. I knew it would provoke AOOs, but killing them before they wake up is important.

Hawk moves to M4 and finishes off another sleeping cat.

Icebird

"Twice as many cats as there are dozens in a gross with the second match of this tournament taken out and the first one added in!" Hiro announces, and as the judges puzzle this number out, he proceeds to slay the sleep foes. That would be 21, please.

Preparing a new set of spells (Mage Armor, Burning Hands x2), he faces down a new and larger swarm of cats. For the preparation round of the next match, he keeps up the tradition: Mage Armor on himself.

The unending stream of feline is starting to fray our Hiro's nerves, and he lets out a nervous chuckle before moving forward and readying his personalized arcane flamethrower.

[Move to E4 while drawing dagger, ready action to burning hands when he can hit at least 6, casting defensively if threatened, don't cast if he can't hit that many of them before his action.]

Hiro:

Cats 5

Hiro moves and readies an action.

Cats in row S, then R, then Q move on their initiative count. This causes the readied action to trigger when the first three squares in row S do their move action (filling three squares with 2 cats each).

Readied action is triggered. Hiro uses Burning Hands. Cats attempt reflex save (one per cat): 8, 15, 18, 16, 13, 7 vs DC 14. Three failures, three successes. Burning hands deals 3 damage to 3 cats and 1 damage to 3 cats.

Cat charges Hiro provoking an AOO: 20. Hit. Hiro deals 3 damage. Cat dies.

Cats move 60 feet forward.

"Too many cats! Too many of them!" Hiro screams as he steps carefully among the foes. Unleashing another torrent of flame at them, he changes his scream: "Not enough spells!" His hawk remains with him near ground level, and attacks the cat he's just nearly stepped on.

5' step to F3 and cast burning hands southward. I'm a bit confused about the last 15' cone - why did it cover E4, the space he was in? If it's going to do that again, he'll move to F4 instead. Goal is to torch the 8 cats in rows 6 and 7 and the one in F4, regardless of where he needs to stand to do so.

Hiro:

Cats 5

Hawk moves to F3 and attacks: 17. Hit. Hawk deals 1 damage.

Hiro moves to F3 and attempts to cast Burning Hands. Orange Cat is granted an AOO: 14. Miss.

Hiro casts Burning Hands to the south. Cats attempt Reflex Save (one per cat): 19, 16, 11, 17, 22, 23, 24, 7, 5 vs. DC 14. 3 Failures. 3 Cats take 2 damage; 6 Cats take 1 damage.

Cats attack, provoking AOOs. Hiro attacks: 6, 16, 17, 5. Two hits. Hiro deals 5 and 3 damage. Two cats die.

One cat receives a full attack on the Hawk: 13, 17, 10. One hit. Cat deals 1 damage.

One cat attacks Hawk: 24 (confirmed crit). Cat deals 2 damage. Hawk falls unconscious.

Two cats attack Hiro: 12, 23. One hit. Cat deals 1 damage.

"No! Tweety!" Hiro yells as the vicious cat attempts to eat his bird. He responds by reaching down with one hand to scoop the hawk out of reach of the cats and simultaneously striking at the cat to the south.

[I've been posting the Hawk's AC incorrectly - since it's sharing a mage armor with him, it's actually 21, not 17. But that would put it at 0 instead of -1, so the only difference it would make is that it's not bleeding to death. Up to you whether to change it or ignore it since it's my fault.

Move action to pick up hawk, standard to attack the cat in F4, then 5' step into the same square (hoping the cat's dead).]

In a valiant last move that would make any Fighter proud, Hiro lunges backwards while swinging his blade. Crimson spray covers the ground as three cats mew their final time. Their writhing continues even as their companions press forward, taking the opening Hiro has left and utilizing it to the fullest. All four cats slash and bite, draining Hiro of his energy to the point where he collapses.

His hawk can only watch on as the pool of blood spreads.
