View Full Version : Gladiator Tournament II - Round 1: The Cloud vs. Brunhilda

Well, this is the last of our round 1 matches. Yesterday The Cloud pulled out a brutal victory over Elgin. Can he match that ferocity today against Brunhilda?
I'm sure Brunhilda certainly hopes not. Neither Elgin nor his familiar survived yesterday's match. I did check in with the clerics, however, and have been informed that they are both up and about again after a true ressurection spell for each. Let's hope that there aren't any more of those needed today.
Pansy. I want blood and The Cloud seems most eager to give it to me!
Not all the crowd is quite so bloodthirsty as you are though. The Cloud, Brunhilda, introduce yourselves to the crowd.
Brunhilda:
Crowd Attitude: 4
HP: 178

The Cloud:

"Silly Cloud, all that smoke, and nothing to show for it. Looks like you need to heat things up a bit!"
Brunhilda adjusts her armor to show a bit more hairy cleavage, she takes a running start and leaps into the air, turning a slow summersault in midair. As he reaches the apogee of her leap, she bursts into flames, then lands lightly on her feet.
[ooc: move/jump to L20, jumping to impress. Activate nimbus while airborn to be extra impressive (circ bonus on jump to impress?)]

The Cloud of Death senses about the crowd to find whether they are enjoying their gift. "I figured that for this fight I should not allow my audience to go hungy whilst I feast. Enjoy your hearty meal of fresh cow meat while I kill, man-things! And enjoy the show!" The being within the Cloud ponders, ah...what a nice purpose I have found for myself. I can definately learn to enjoy this.
A disembodied grinding laugh issues forth from the Cloud of Death, "HA Ha haaah!". Nothing more is heard. Nothing more is seen. The dead silence is un-nerving. Then, blood sprays in all directions surrounding the Cloud of Death on all sides. The beast just on the outskirts of the Cloud is also covered.

The Cloud drops an Eversmoking bottle and unleashes a spray of blood that covers the area around the cloud. This is the equivalent of an untrained Perform check to impress the crowd. 7 vs. DC 35. Fails. Crowd is not impressed.

"Ah, that's better. It was a bit chilly out here, don't you think? Nothing like a roaring fire to get the blood flowing...well, almost nothing." Brunhilda winks at a handsome giant sitting in the front row as she says the last. The flames surrounding her swirl faster and faster, and once again she rises into the air, buoyed up by their heat. As she rises, she hurls her mundane rock.
[ooc: in hand are magic rock and a non-magic rock (merciful enchantment active). Expend psionic focus to activate firewalk, move straight up as far as is necessary to have line of sight to the stake securing the gray render, throw non-magic rock, targeting the chain securing the gray render, power throwing for 14 (+10 to hit, 2d6+22 damage).
attack: [roll0]
damage: [roll1]
Primary intent is to gain line of sight to the chain securing the gray render without getting any closer to it and to attempt to destroy the chain]
edit: bonus to hit should have been +9, not that it should make a difference as either way it only misses on a natural 1 I think.

Brunhilda activates firewalk and moves.
Brunhilda attacks the chain restraining the Gray Render. 13-8 (distance) = 5 vs. AC 5 (tiny inanimate object). Hits. Deals 31 damage. Hardness reduces to 21. Chain is destroyed. Gray Render is now free to move about the arena.
Warforged Titan steps.
The Cloud moves. Move Silently 37.
The Cloud casts freedom of movement. Since this spell has a verbal component, all Listen DC’s to determine The Cloud’s location are reset to 0 as their base.
Gray Render Listen 16 vs. DC 2. Gray Render knows direction to The Cloud based on sound. He also knows that The Cloud is within 30ft of him based on scent, and thus is the closest opponent.
Gray Render moves in the direction of The Cloud. This provokes an AoO from The Cloud. The Cloud attacks, power attacking for extra damage. 31 vs. AC 19. Hits. Deals 20 non-lethal damage.
Gray Render moves in the direction of The Cloud, stopping when he is adjacent and his scent pinpoint’s The Cloud’s location.
Note: The size of the Dire Elephant was incorrectly represented on the map and as a result his position is too close to some obstacles. His size and position have been adjusted to be correct. His stake postion has also been adjusted.
Dire Elephant takes no action.
Stone Golem steps.
Brunhilda Listen 31 vs. Battle DC 1 (-10 battle, +6 distance, +5 crowd noise), Moniker DC 12 (0 invisible creature in battle, +7 distance, +5 crowd noise distraction), Gray Render DC 11 (0 invisible creature in battle, +6 distance, +5 crowd noise distraction), Gray Render DC 28 (17 move silently, +6 distance, +5 crowd noise distraction). Well, there's a first. Brunhilda has set the Gray Render free to roam the arena. We haven't seen that tactic used before.
Well, given it's proximity to the cloud, it's a fairly sound tactic that she can employ from this distance. On top of that, it seems to have found The Cloud, though whether or not that's a good thing is impossible to tell at the moment.

As she winds up the rock bursts into flames and she hurls it into the smoke.
ooc:

There are 8 possible squares for The Cloud to be in based on what Brunhilda has heard. They are numbered as follows:

3 4 5 6
7 8
The Cloud is in square 1. The Gray Render is in squares 3, 4, & 7 (as well as one unnumbered square). I will roll to determine which square Brunhilda targets.
Brunhilda targets square 1. Brunhilda attacks The Cloud. Seeking negates Concealment. 33 vs. AC 29 (+4 cover). Hits. Deals 24 non-lethal damage and 15 non-lethal fire damage. Fire resistance reduces fire damage to 10, so total damage dealt is 34 non-lethal.

Confused (if not a bit shocked) as to how the giantess was able to hit him, Moniker decides to change his tactics a bit in the future. Focusing, he grunts loudly as he throws his full weight into his assault on the gray render.
OOC:
Make a clearly audible grunt
Cast Wraithstrike and power attack for -10 with flurry on the Gray Render striking for nonlethal damage with Death's Grip.
(attack should be: 12 BAB +8 Str +1 WF +1 magic -10 power attack -4 non-lethal -2 flurry = +6/6/1/-4, damage: 2d4 +35 (+12 Str +1 magic +20 power attack +2 armbands)) 20/x2
Since I am a bit confused about placement at this point I would like to give a conditional movement. If able to 5' step after the attack to a place within the Cloud of Death but not within 5' of the Gray Render I would like to do that while hiding and moving silently. If not, then I would still like Moniker to do the 5' sneak to any other square.

The Cloud steps. Move Silently 37 sets base DC to track his movement and pinpoint his current location.
Dire Elephant takes no action.
Stone Golem takes no action.
Brunhilda’s firewalk ends, causing her to fall. She takes 10 damage from the fall. Reflex 21 vs. DC 20 to land on her feet. Success.
Brunhilda Listen 25 vs. battle DC 1 (-10 base +6 distance +5 crowd noise distraction), battle participants DC 11 (0 base +6 distance +5 crowd noise distraction) and The Cloud DC 47 (37 base +5 distance +5 crowd noise distraction). Brunhilda hears and pinpoints the battle between The Cloud and the Gray Render. She also is able to make out each participant in the combat, but not their exact locations. She does not hear The Cloud move.
Brunhilda’s rock returns to her location when she threw it. Since she is no longer in this location, it drops to the ground. The rock weighs 45 lbs and so must fall 40 feet or further to deal damage as a falling object. Since it only falls 35 feet, there is no danger of it dealing damage to Brunhilda.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post my actions, but at least this way they can be saved to be looked at later if anyone cares. Plus it doesn't clog up your PMs. So unless otherwise noted I think I will post private actions here.
I would like Moniker to kick (roll or slide according to your PM) the bottle in the direction of the construct in the SW quadrant of the arena with the intent of getting it into the same square as the construct. Hopefully in P7 if possible. You said this would be a bullrush attempt where the object gets a 0 for the roll and I don't have to move with the object. The bottle you said is tiny so it gets a -8. So if Moniker makes an average roll of say...10, then his check result should be 18. That means on average he should beat the roll by about 26. With 5' push back automatic with a successful bull rush and an additional 5 feet for every 5 points I beat the score by then I should be able to move it 30' or so. Doesn't sound like it is possible for him to get it there with one kick/roll/whatever.
If that is the case I would rather have him just lob the thing over there. Primary concern is getting the bottle into that space. Secondary concern is making it not look obvious that the bottle was not transported by him personally.
If I have any action left in the round where I complete this action I would like for it to be a 5' step North so long as I will be able to get past the shrubs without causing any additional noise. Otherwise I would like the 5' step to be west.
Until otherwise noted all movement will be stealthy and 1/2 my movement or under so that I do not get any negetives.
If/when I get time I will also post in the arena thread.

The Cloud picks up the eversmoking bottle and throws it. Since he is not targeting any individual, and merely moving the bottle, this does not count as an attack so his invisibility remains intact. However, the action is resolved with a ranged attack roll, treating the bottle as an improvised weapon (-4 to hit, range increment 10 ft). 10 vs. AC 5. Hits. Bottle lands in the square that The Cloud was targeting.
Note: The speed of travel for the cloud is such that Brunhilda can tell that The Cloud wasn’t carrying the bottle as it moved.

What interests me is the speed with which the cloud just moved to cover up the Warforged Titan. It was too fast for Moniker to have been carrying the bottle, which means he's still in the same area as he was before. It appears, however, that he's invisible because I can't see neither hide nor hair of him.

Hrm...I don't believe that the bottle made it to the correct square. I was hoping for P7 as it is somewhat past the construct from Brunhilda. But even O8 would have been preferable as she would have to enter the construct's square to get it. Where it is now she could pick it up without entering his square if she wanted. But if it is a big deal I'll let it slide as it still accomplishes most of what I was aiming for.
Anyway, after casting I would like to move to move north to F11 so long as I will be able to get past the shrubs without causing any additional noise. Otherwise I would like move to F8.
Still moving stealthily so as to not get any additional negetives to move silently, of course.

You never specified a square so I chose the closest one that was in the construct's space. You're also forgetting that creatures are "square" in the area they take up. Despite the fact that the picture of the Warforged Titan and the bottle don't overlap, they are, in fact, in the same space.

Lune

Ok, so here is what I'm going for:
If people are observing you, even casually, you can’t hide. You can run around a corner or behind cover so that you’re out of sight and then hide, but the others then know at least where you went. If your observers are momentarily distracted (such as by a Bluff check; see below), though, you can attempt to hide. While the others turn their attention from you, you can attempt a Hide check if you can get to a hiding place of some kind. (As a general guideline, the hiding place has to be within 1 foot per rank you have in Hide.) This check, however, is made at a –10 penalty because you have to move fast.
Moniker's goal is to get to C16. He wants to setup cover while he tries to block the rock's return to Brunhilda with the crate that is there. But he is always sneaking about, and as he has already been hit once by the troublesome rock, he is wary of Brunhilda and more sneaky than normal. He doesn't know she can see him while invisible yet, but he is still being cautious in other ways.
For that reason he should be moving slowly to the location and sneaking there while trying to take a total defense standard action as well as a move action at half of his movement so as to not get a penalty to his move silently check. The way I'm reading it, Moniker can still hide if he is within 12' of the Cloud. I believe that the square that Moniker can get to this turn would be D13. Since that is within 12' of the Cloud, I believe he can still attempt a hide check.
With that, Moniker will move silently and hide while going there. Move silently: 23, hide: 15.
His AC vs. Brunhilda should currently be: 31 (10 +4 nat +8 armor +3 Dex +2 deflection [from circle of protection vs. good] +4 dodge [from total defene])

Round 13: Move to I-5, and unless the cloud has been pinpointed through passive checks, target the bottle once more, unless it has been destroyed. If it has been destroyed, attack the dire elephant's chain. If he has been pinpointed, instead move to directly above him and turn bag of holding inside out.
Rounds 14+: If Brunhilda hears her attacks on the bottle hitting something other than the bottle, take a 5 foot step around the cloud of smoke each turn, listen check to attempt to locate the cloud, attack the bottle with magic rock.

Hrm. Ok, but previously you had ruled that when I had freedom of movement on that I could go through hedges. No problem either way though.
What square did Moniker actually get to then? I think I would need to know that to determine my next actions. Basically, his intentions would be to get to behind the crate at about C16 without being noticed and cast obscuring mist and flip the crate up to give cover to himself while he awaits for the stone to be thrown into a square where he could block it's path with the crate so that it can't return.
He then may actually consider using the rock himself...seeking is a nice property for him to have on a ranged weapon. :)
His real end goal is to force Brunhilda into a melee situation. If that means he has to wait out the duration of her fly effect, he will do that. If not then he will try to neutralize her as a ranged threat. That means the first priority is to get rid of the seeking weapon. Of course, he doesn't want to get hit with it in the meantime either. He is an opportunist and will generally try to only fight when things are stacked in his favor. In this match that means a melee combat.

Moniker is currently in D10, just outside the obscuring mist but still with cover from the hedges, and as yet unseen by Brunhilda. Moving to C16 will take 2 more rounds at half-speed if you continue with the full defense, one round if you just move.

"Not such an effect as I had hoped," Brunhilda frowns, "oh well." Unable to hear her opponent from her present location, the giantess moves in the hopes that he can be located.
Round 13: Move to I-5, and unless the cloud has been pinpointed through passive checks, attack the stone golem. If he has been pinpointed, instead move to directly above him and turn bag of holding inside out.
Rounds 14-18: listen check to attempt to locate the cloud, if cloud is not pinpointed attack stone golem with magic rock, if cloud is pinpointed through active check attack cloud with magic rock. If cloud is pinpointed through passive checks prior to Brunhilda's active listen check, instead move to directly above him and turn bag of holding inside out.
Round 19: Move to M-11, and unless the cloud has been pinpointed through passive checks, attack the dire elephant's chain. If he has been pinpointed, instead move to directly above him and turn bag of holding inside out.

Basically I want to have Moniker sneak to square C16 so that he can cast obscuring mist and turn the crate on it's side so he can use it to take away the returning rock. He would do so sneakily. He will move after casting or making a noise. He intends to use the crate for as much cover as possible while he carries out his plans.
Also, he isn't using obscuring mist again because he thinks Brunhilda can see him, he is doing it because he knows that she would notice the crate being lifted.
He would sacrifice a bit of defense to arrive there and set his plan into motion by no longer using the full defense action. He is confident that she can not see him at this point as he is outside the Cloud but not careless enough to not continue to sneak.
Of course, once (if) he determines that Brunhilda can see him even though he is invisible then he will do his best to not leave total concealment and make her bring the fight to him. That is his end goal in any circumstance.
Let me know if you need more specifics than that or any questions you might have. It is hard for me to give a round by round thing because I don't know how long certain actions will take. So long as he is working towards the goals outlined here then I'm fine with you advancing. I can't think of a lot that would change his plans unless something prevents him from getting to that square and still being concealed. Or if she finds some way to see through the mist, or perhaps some other unforseen circumstances.

I've positioned Moniker so that he can trap the rock on his next action if you want to. Note: tipping the platform back down will be a full round action to do it quietly, so you can't ready that action. If you don't mind the noise, you can tip it back down as a standard action (which can be readied). In that case, what you'll be doing is tipping it half-way and letting gravity do the rest.

Is Moniker able to use the crate for cover after tipping it onto the rock in that position? If so then groovy. If not would it be ok to move him so that he can?
He doesn't care if it makes sound as long as he can use the crate for cover. Actually, even if he can't use it for cover he doesn't care because at this point it is more important to get rid of the seeking rock than it is to not get hit the once. He would rather bite the bullet (rock) than waste his opportunity to remove the continued threat.
Also, his intent was to purposefully make a noise to get Brunhilda to attack the square needed to drop the crate into. What he will probably do is respond to something Brunhilda says. But if she doesn't say anything then he will taunt her with, "Stop wasting time, Brunhilda. Come fight me!"
Things will likely change after that so I guess I will have to see how things go then before continuing with further actions.

I guess I need some passive listen checks. Actually, SOP would normally be to use quick reconnoiter as well if that is allowable. I'm guessing that it isn't too difficult to hear the elephant approaching though. Or at least know that it is free.
If he knows that it is free then I will have a change in plans. I would take a total defense standard action each turn, not speak, and hide and stand still (move silently?) so as to reduce the chances of the elephant noticing him. He would seek to have the critter turn on Brunhilda and have her plans backfire.
Question: would hiding under the crate block Moniker's scent? If not I might consider going into the water until the cirtter passes assuming that would work. In fact, if I did that would I be able to take the crate with him?

Well, I would have figured that at the very least he would have dropped the crate on top of the returning rock so that it would no longer return. What was up with that? I guess I would have liked to have dropped the crate on top of the rock with Moniker along with it if possible. Thats why I was asking in my previous post about whether he could do that and gain cover from his current location.
I'm thinking after taking away the rock (as stated, his major goal) then he will be moving preferably with the crate to the water to mask his scent. If not he will at least be bringing the rock.
Question on mechanics: if I wish to use my bottle while in the water... um, how would that work? Would I gain total cover that way as well as total concealment?
Black Plauge
15th of May, 2007, 05:07
You couldn't as a readied action, as it would have taken a move action to get the rock under the crate and a standard action to drop the crate on top of it. Your readied action was conditional on the rock ending up in a square where the platform would have covered it.
You could, however, do it as your normal action. I just wanted to make sure that you were still doing this even with what's happened.
The bottle won't work underwater. Besides, the water is already cloudy (just not as cloudy as the bottle makes the air).

Why would I have to get the rock under the crate if it was already there? That is why I wanted Moniker to already be in a square where it would be setup that the rock would have to be in the correct place for him to drop the crate on top of anyway. This should not be an issue as he can fit under the crate with it.
I'm a little confused as to what is going on here as things seem to have changed somehow without me knowing what it is that really changed. You had initially PMed me that I could have Moniker take a readied action to block the return of the rock to Brunhilda, but now I can't and I don't know why. I felt that I was specific enough in Moniker's intent to place himself in a position that would allow best for him to accomplish this. What I don't understand is what changed so that Moniker can no longer do this.
You said that Moniker would have to move the rock "to get the rock under the crate". Assuming that is the case then couldn't Moniker simply grab the rock, negating the need for the crate in the first place? If he blocks it's return by grabbing onto it and not allowing it to come back by holding onto it then why would he need the crate to block it's return? I'm not too clear on that. What I figured he would be doing was throwing the crate over the rock as it came towards him or sped away. I thought that was what you were declaring could be readied.
As is, yes. I would like to continue with my actions. I would like to throw the crate over the top of the rock while using it for cover as before. In fact, if Moniker can get under the crate as I stated in earlier posts I would prefer that as well.
In my past couple of posts (the one from 10th of May, 2007, 10:02 and on) I had asked about Moniker's placement and if he would have been able to do what he wished to do from that location. As it is currently it seems like the answer is now "no". Which is why I asked if he could be moved to a position where he could do this from if that were the case.
Also, my question about the bottle was if Moniker were in the water and the bottle were not. Like if he held the nozle out of the water for instance. Currently it doesn't much matter cause he could just jump into the part of the water that is covered by the mist. But it may come to pass that it will matter soon. My current plan is to go under the crate with the rock to gain some cover with it. Then I will probably move with the crate into the water, or just move seperately and jump in depending mostly on what the elephant and Brunhilda do.
Black Plauge
17th of May, 2007, 00:01
Oh, you wanted to be under the platform. I missed that. My placement of Moniker was based on the assumption that you wanted to be free to act after trapping the rock. Thus Moniker was alongside the platform rather in the area it would drop onto, hence the need to move the rock when it was thrown directly at him. His position was perfect for that situation (at least until Brunhilda moved).
Holding the rock may or may not have worked. It would have required a strength check on Moniker's part. Having never seen someone try that before, I've never figured out what the DC would be, but it would probably be fairly high.
If the bottle were held out of the water (something which would only happen on a successful swim check, and which would apply a penalty to the swim check) then it would function normally.
Edit: Oh, and Moniker going under the platform or moving the crate into the water will create an open path for the rock to return to Brunhilda (or rather her position when she through it). There is no time limit on the returning property, so it will do so at its first opportunity.
Lune
17th of May, 2007, 02:15
Wait...what? No time limit on the returning?
Returning: This special ability can only be placed on a weapon that can be thrown. A returning weapon flies through the air back to the creature that threw it. It returns to the thrower just before the creature’s next turn (and is therefore ready to use again in that turn).
Catching a returning weapon when it comes back is a free action. If the character can’t catch it, or if the character has moved since throwing it, the weapon drops to the ground in the square from which it was thrown.
Well, I guess it doesn't say one way or the other in any kind of specific way. I guess I just assumed that since it said that it would return to the thrower's hand on the next turn that it was giving a one turn duration. And since it couldn't return to the thrower's square or the square it was thrown from then it would just drop to the ground where it is at and go inert.
I guess that begs the question what would happen if Moniker threw the rock? Would it then set him as the "thrower"? Cause I think thats what I'm going to try. The seeking rock is so much better a weapon than his javelin.
Why would Moniker going under the crate leave an open path? Couldn't he fit under there with the rock? The way you explained the crates earlier said that they have one open side. Kinda like a hollow d6 with one side gone. I figured because of the size of the crate that he could easily fit under it with the rock effectively gaining total cover from all sides. I understand what you mean if he took the crate with him underwater that the rock could go under the crate and return if that is the way you rule it, but not while it is on the ground, right?
Maybe something was unclear before, but basically I was thinking that Moniker could go under the crate at the same time the rock did. I figured he would have to go prone to do it, but that doesn't really matter to him. Basically his idea was to buy himself some time to turn his other bottle on, stash the rock and do some other things. The rock still trying to return adds a bit of complication and may require a bit of experimentation though. Unless it is something Moniker would simply know. He should have some insite in the issue as he has a teleporting weapon which acts very similarly. He may end up throwing the rock from under the crate to within the crate just to see if he can get himself set as the "thrower".

The way I read the returning property, it sets how quickly the weapon returns, once it is able to, not how long it tires to do so.
I guess that begs the question what would happen if Moniker threw the rock? Would it then set him as the "thrower"? Cause I think thats what I'm going to try. The seeking rock is so much better a weapon than his javelin.
It would return to Moniker as soon as it could. That would in no way effect its retrunging to Brunhilda, though, so both of you could end up throwing the rock back and forth.
Why would Moniker going under the crate leave an open path? Couldn't he fit under there with the rock?
Plenty of room under the platform, but you'll have to lift it up to get under it, that creates an open path that the rock can use to return. If we reset the match back to the point where Moniker would be in a square that lets him end up under the platform with the rock as a result of his tipping the platform back down, then this becomes a moot point. See the main discussion thread for more about how badly that one issue in placement screws things up.

Well, it doesn't say that. I guess there is some room for interpretation but an unlimited duration seems a bit much. I mean...what if the rock were to be thrown through a gate and the gate closed. Would it continually travel until it gets back to the person who threw it? Would it be able to traverse such a distance all in 1 round?
Let me ask this: would you be opposed to opening up the question in the OOC forum to hear other opinions?

Ok, that seems a bit odd too. Would the rock get confused as to who the thrower is then? I mean, if Moniker threw it and then caught it, could he then just hold onto it without it returning back to Brunhilda? Obviously it can not return to both throwers at the same time.
Plenty of room under the platform, but you'll have to lift it up to get under it...
Wait...it is already lifted. I don't get it. Why would it have to be relifted if he goes under there at the same time as the rock?
I know about the placement issue. I was hoping it wouldn't become an issue but thats why I started asking about it earlier...I think it just got missed.
Right now I'm not sure how Moniker's next actions will turn out though cause I don't know really whats going on with the rock.

As illogical as it sounds, the literal reading of the ability does seem to imply that, assuming said gate was not the only link between the two planes.
Let me ask this: would you be opposed to opening up the question in the OOC forum to hear other opinions?

No confusion. It would return to each thrower, arriving at the appropriate square at the begining of that person's turn.

As I have resolved the actions thus far, Moniker has already tipped the platform back down to cover the rock and he is not under the platform. Given how far back and the significant change in actions that fixing that would require, I've asked you and Boomalor to express whether you want to have a replay of those rounds, or play on given the current circumstances. Go look at the main discussion thread for more on this.
In any case, I'll make sure that everything is clear before moving the match forward again.

Well, I guess there are a few things that changed that I had thought I was going to be able to do without a hitch based on previous discussions that now seem more problematic. The biggest two issues seem to be what the thrown weapon is doing and if/how Moniker can get under the platform and what he can do while in there. I think the biggest hanging point is what the returning weapon is doing so it would be best to start from there.
On that note I think I would like to bring it to the OOC thread to get the consensus on that. I think we may both have something to learn on the abilities of a returning weapon.
Lune
17th of May, 2007, 22:37
Let me also ask this as it will help to know it now as to whether I would like a reset or to move forward:
The way I understand it as you have explained it thus far is this:
Moniker could drop the crate on top of the rock as a standard action if he doesn't care if it makes noise or not. This would still leave him a move action.
or;
Moniker could drop the crate on top of the rock as a full round action to have it make no noise. This would not give him a move action, but would still give him a 5' step.
See, at this point I think Moniker's decision to go under the crate with the rock or not is going to be dependant on what the properties of the weapon are. If it just will keep trying to go back to Brunhilda regardless of what he does to it then I don't think he would want to go under the crate as much. In fact, due to other things happening, he may want to move instead.
Lesse what others think on the returning issue though first. Maybe we will both learn something.
Lune
21st of May, 2007, 23:42
In addition to the actions stated in my above post Moniker could also fall prone as a free action. So even if dropping the crate is a full round action then he would still be able to take a 5' step (to under the crate) and then fall prone as a free action. Right?
That way if Moniker would have wanted to be under the crate with the rock as previously stated when I assumed that the rock would not try to return to Brunhilda it wouldn't require a reset to do so. And if he didn't want to be under the crate because the rock does try to return then it also wouldn't require a reset.
edit: Also I was thinking...
Brunhilda Listen 33 vs. DC 0 (-10 base +5 distance +5 crowd noise distraction) & DC 10 (0 base +5 distance +5 crowd noise distraction). Brunhilda is able to pinpoint The Cloud as he drops the platform.
This is to say that she was able to pinpoint the Cloud at the moment that he dropped the platform. Like when spellcasting Moniker often moves after casting. In fact, this is now his SoP. Brunhilda is likely aware of that but it may not change her action. However, Boomlaor also wouldn't know whether he moved or not anyways so it is unlikely to change his action as he would have no more information than he already has to base his action on. So this wouldn't influence whether a reset is needed as far as I can tell.
I mean, pinpointing doesn't give you continuous information. I doubt she would be able to hear Moniker move silently when he makes his 5' step.
Black Plauge

If Moniker steps before, then he can end up under the platform, but then the later DC set for the actual dropping of the platform would control whether Brunhilda knew where Moniker was.
If Moniker steps after he drops the platform, then he can't end up underneath as a result of the step, as the platform is already down.
If you want to 5' step after dropping the platform, I'll let you do that without the reset.

Yeah. So just to make sure we are on the same page here...the dropping of the platform would set the DC to hear the platform and Moniker's move silently check would set the DC to hear Moniker moving. Right?
And this would accomplish both himself and the rock being under the platform at the same time, right? So then this could all be accomplished still without a reset I believe. Brunhilda still wouldn't know anything more or less about anything than she knew before (so long as Moniker succeeds at his move silently check).
To me this sounds like the best case scenario for all as it takes into consideration the intent of all those involved and it seems to accomplish what each was going for.

No. In order to end up under the platform, Moniker must move before he drops it, essentially invalidating the Move Silently check. The only way for Brunhilda to not know anything more about Moniker's location than what she knows now is for Moniker to step after the platform is dropped (which means he can't go under it).
Lune
23rd of May, 2007, 04:00
Wait...now I'm confused again. Obviously Moniker must move before he drops the platform in order to be under it. But why does this prevent the rock from being under the platform with him? Or were you saying something else?
If Moniker moves before the platform is dropped then the listen DC to pinpoint Moniker would be opposed to his move silently check. So since the last thing Brunhilda knew was that Moniker was beside the platform then nothing else changes in what she knows. And since he gets a 5' step with his full round action he could move to under the platform.
Or do you just mean that Brunhilda wouldn't know where he was at all? I'm confused again.

Saying something else.
If Moniker moves before he drops the platform then while the movement itself would be covered by the Move Silently check, the actual dropping of the platform would not and would still have the same DC (which Brunhilda beat by more than 20) allowing Brunhilda to pinpoint his location (which would be different than what was posted).
In order for Brunhilda not to know where Moniker is he must move after he drops the platform, in which case he won't be able to get under it.
Lune
23rd of May, 2007, 06:17
Wait, confused again. Why would dropping the platform reveal Moniker's location? Understandably it would reveal the platform's location, but why Moniker's? Or basically why would dropping the platform and staying put be any morenoisy than successfully moving silently and dropping the platform? And you already said he would get to use his move silently check so...confusion.
Black Plauge
24th of May, 2007, 00:18
Dropping the platform reveals Moniker's location because he's the one doing the dropping. As a standard action it can't be done quietly. What Moniker is doing, essentially, is heaving his shoulder into the platform (or grabbing it and yanking hard, depending on position), tipping it far enough that it will fall the rest of the way over. The fall of the platform makes a whole lot of noise (-10 DC) but Moniker too makes a bunch of noise (though not as much) in shoving the platform (0 DC). Brunhilda's listen check pinpointed both the dropping of the platform and Moniker's location when he dropped it. Thus any movement before Moniker drops the platform, regardless of how stealthily it is carried out, won't help him disguise his position because Brunhilda hears him when he knocks down the platform. In order to disguise your position you need to move after you make noise.
Lune
24th of May, 2007, 03:56
Oh, come on BP, that is petty. Moniker could have dropped that platform from any of several different locations on the map. And what would let someone know which position he dropped it from?
And if anything the noise of dropping the platform would serve to cover up any noise that Moniker could be making, not actually make him easier to hear. Besides that, you already have said that the listen check would be opposed to Moniker's move silently roll if he moves, not the dropping of the platform. They are two different checks modified by different things.
Black Plauge
25th of May, 2007, 01:23
I specifically told you that you couldn't drop the platform quietly and as we've discussed elsewhere, the rules don't cover one noise covering up another.
I also said that any move Moniker might make would be covered by his Move Silently check, but that would not effect the actual action of dropping the platform.
And while Moniker could have dropped the platform from any number of spots, Brunhilda made her listen check to figure out which one.
Lune
25th of May, 2007, 22:03
Here is the problem, BP. By your current ruling if I say that I would prefer Moniker to be under the platform as I originally did then we have to do a reset as from the sounds of it Moniker would not have been in the position that he had been when the rock hit him. Then after the rock hit him Brunhilda wouldn't be as likely to do her last move as she would realize he was protected by the platform.
On the other hand if I say that I would like Moniker to stay outside of the platform and change my initial request but still try to follow Moniker's normal SoP then he would still move after making noise. Then he would have been in the correct square for the magic rock to hit him, but not in the square that Brunhilda would be attacking in her last post.
Either way it is likely for someone (Boomlaor, most likely) to feel the victim that he was cheated out of something that his character had known previously.
On the other hand, if Moniker gets his move silently roll modifier to oppose Brunhilda's listen check then as far as Brunhilda knows he is still in the square she thought he was when he got hit and the platform still dropped. She would still be acting on the same information that is in the thread currently except that Moniker actually moved after he was hit by the magic rock (before dropping the platform) and she just didn't hear it.
I am not trying to finagle anything by any of that. In fact, I'm trying to interpret the rules the way they are meant to be played. It just so happens that it would also be the easiest fairest way to continue at this point as well. Everyone still would be completing the actions they intended to based on the information they had at the time. The only difference between the two is that in your interpretation of RAW Moniker does not get his move silently roll and in mine he does. I think he should. You think he shouldn't.
If it is not acceptable to proceed that way then I have to make a decision as to which way Moniker would have proceeded and one of them requires a reset while the other is likely to cause discord as character knowledge wouldn't match player knowledge. You let me know which way you would like to proceed. I'll take your wishes into consideration on my decision for Moniker's action.

Yes. Is that a problem? Unless you totally botch your Move Silently roll, then Brunhilda won't know that and would act in the exact same way as she did. If you do botch the Move Silently roll, then I can very easily adjust Brunhilda's action to be over the correct square. This, to me, seems to be a non-issue.
As I see it, what you want and what I'm offering don't effect Brunhilda in any way. The only difference is in the possible squares Moniker might end up in. You want him under the platform. I'm telling you that he's got to be outside it.

Brunhilda moves and turns her bag of holding inside out. This voids it of all it’s contents (twenty-eight 45lb rocks), which fall. Since Brunhilda is not actually throwing them, I will treat this the same as the Falling Block Trap in the DMG, p. 72. Two squares are targeted with an attack roll of 19. Right now I think I would like to 5' step to the E and ready an attack against Brunhilda if she gets within his reach. His goal right now is to see what the elephant is up to. Actually, would he be able to 5' step to C15 supposing he could make a swim check?
Actually, I suppose I need to ask about such things: If he gets out of the water - being that the valve on his bottle is already open - would the surrounding area immediately fill with smoke? So that he would basically be able to jump out of the water and start fighting in concealment allowing him to get his sneak attacks? Or are you imposing some time delay on the smoke spreading?

I think you've got at least 16 lbs of gear, so yes, you can walk around on the bottom if you like (no swim check required). The moat is 15' deep. To get out, you'll have to swim back to the surface first.
Actually, would he be able to 5' step to C15 supposing he could make a swim check?
You can't make a 5' step in a movement mode you don't have, so no. You'd have to use a move action to move at all.
being that the valve on his bottle is already open
The valve is not open. Your failed swim check last round prevented you from opening it.

Based on the listen checks (and assuming he heard Brunhilda yelling) Moniker is content to allow the fight to continue outside of the water. Hrm...got a question I guess. If Moniker were to cast deeper darkness on say his spare spiked chain or something while he was underwater...what would the effect be? I know the water is murky, would it be enough to block the effect until he submerged?
edit: Ok, scratch that idea for now. I may save it for a later turn. Instead, 5' sneak to the E. and ready an action to climb out to square C18 if Moniker senses the elephant die. (not likely)

Moniker assumes that Brunhilda must have given ground to the Dire Elephant as he no longer hears her. The grimlock chuckles to himself ... how ironic is it that instead of facing him directly, the giantling decided to allow one of the beasts to do her work for her. And now she claims the Cloud of Death as a coward? He is content to let her reap what she has sewn, having her hypocritical little plan backfire is just the comedy he needs.
Grim ironic humor passes through his head while he plots and conives.

I need to know the stats for the rock to be able to determine my next action. Specifically the stats for the rocks in Moniker's hands if it isn't too much to ask. Also, please see my post in the other thread requesting the location of the dire elephant. Is the map above accurate currently?
Black Plauge

Moniker is not currently holding any rocks, so I'm not sure what you're asking about there. If you are refering to Brunhilda's throwing rocks, you can check her character sheet for the stats on the magical rock (the one by itself). The others are just plain old ordinary rocks.
The map is accurate and does reflect the change in position of the Dire Elephant.
Lune

I'm considering picking up her magical rock and throwing it at her. The seeking property in particular is attractive to Moniker as it negates the miss chance for it being outside of his blindsight radius so long as he is able to pinpoint via some other means. However, her character sheet doesn't give any information on the rock itself but only it's magical properties which I already know.
Her stat block gives the damage she would do, but I don't know if that is increased for her size, racial ability or class ability, etc. Same goes for range. I don't have access to the books that rock hurling and improved rock hurling are in to know what affect they have. Basically what I need is the stats for her magic rock in the hands of Moniker. Mostly it's range.
Also, what kind of action is it to pick up the rock? Free action like drawing a weapon if you have a +1BAB or move action?

Sorry, I thought it was the magical properties you were asking about. In Moniker's hands the rock is an "improvised weapon dealing 2d6 damage with a range increment of 5 ft, and such a rock can be thrown only as a full round action. [Moniker] is considered to be nonproficent, taking a -4 penalty on the attack roll." (quoting from RoS). Albeit, in the case of the magical rock, you do get the benefit of its magical propoerties too.

This is considering he is able to pinpoint her square with either his passive listen check or his free listen check gained from quick reconnoiter. If he can do neither then he will instead move in the same manner and cast darkness on his teleporting javelin and draw it before moving. Actually, I think he should have gained at least one other quick reconnoiter based listen check in a previous round as it is his SOP if he ever loses track of an opponent. I assume that because Moniker did pass his listen check that he knows that Brunhilda is "over there somewhere" but not her exact location. From this it is safe for him to assume that she is still flying and he knows she is outside of his blindsight radius so he knows a minimum distance. Believing that she is too far to him to reach in melee he prepairs for next round's attack.

If she can not reach that square in a double move even with descending, then don't descend 'till past column 25, then move as close to H-35, ground level as possible.

With a +8 Str and a -1 armor check penalty thats what I come up with. What about jumping off the bottom to help him swim out? I know you have combined skills in the past to allow jumping to affect tumble checks. Would this be similar? Or climbing to assist swimming, or jumping to assist climbing, etc?

Chainmail has a ACP of -5.
Mithral reduces this to -2.
This then counts double on Swim checks for -4.
Thus, you swim modifier is +4, meaning you rolled a 5.
Mithral items are already MW and don't gain the MW benefits in addition to the material benefits.

Note: In order for Brunhilda to complete the requested move, she must use her fly speed, not her land speed. Also, since she can fly, the crowd would not find jumps impressive. Finally, the jump takes place inside the cloud, and thus can’t be seen by the crowd. Because of all this, I’m going to ignore the jump check and resolve Brunhilda’s action with a simple move.
Brunhilda moves.
Brunhilda attacks a possible target under the water. The Cloud is not in that square.
The Cloud jumps off the bottom, clawing against the side of the moat, and swimming towards the surface. Jump 28 vs. DC 10. Success. The Cloud gets a +2 circumstance bonus on his swim check. Climb 20 vs. DC 10. Success. The Cloud gets a +2 circumstance bonus on his swim check. Swim 9 (+4 circumstance) vs. DC 10. Fails. The Cloud makes no progress towards the surface of the water.
Move Silently 32.
Given the Move Silently check, there is no way for Brunhilda to hear Moniker as he struggles to reach the surface.

The Cloud casts wraithstrike. Since this spell has a verbal component, it sets the Listen DC to 0. Brunhilda Listen 24 vs. DC 13 (0 base +3 distance +5 crowd noise distraction +5 interposing wooden barrier). Success. Brunhilda hears Moniker but cannot pinpoint his location, so her readied action is not triggered.
The Cloud moves. Move Silently 28 (-5 moving faster than half-speed). Brunhilda Listen 24 vs. DC 33 (28 base +5 crowd noise distraction). Fails.
The Cloud attacks Brunhilda. 20 vs. Touch AC 8. Hits. Deals 62 damage. DR reduces to 61. Brunhilda Fort 27 vs. DC 61. Fails. Brunhilda is staggered and may only take a single move action or a standard action (but not both, nor can she take a full round action) until round 42 initiative count 7.
Note: Despite failing her Listen check, Brunhilda knows where The Cloud is because he attacked her.

Brunhilda flinches in pain, but smiles slightly as she feels the flames surrounding her reach out and scorch her opponent. Summoning up all of her concentration, she lashes out with her scythe.
ooc:
roll for nimbus damage dealt to Moniker by his attack [roll0]
single attack with the scythe
concealment [roll1]

damage [roll3]
If this attack drops him, she quickly calls for healing, before rage ends.

Note: I did forget to resolve the Nimbus damage that should have been dealt to The Cloud as the result of his melee attack against Brunhilda. That will be resolved first.
Nimbus deals 9 damage to The Cloud. Fire resistance reduces to 4 damage.
Brunhilda attacks The Cloud. Concealment 88. Attack has a chance to hit. 33 vs. AC 27. Hits. Deals 22 damage. The Cloud is unconscious.
Match is over, Brunhilda wins.
Brunhilda:
Crowd Attitude: 4
HP: -19 (Note: While her post match total is less than -10, Brunhilda is not dead, provided she recieves at least 10 points of healing in the next 4 rounds. Her post match recovery plans should take this into account if she doesn’t want to die and have to pay for a spell to fix that.)

Voting will close on 26 July, 2006. Contestants should email me their recovery plans by that date as well.
And with a final come together and clash of arms, the judges are signaling victory... for Brunhilda?
I'm as surprised as you are. I thought for sure that the first strike capability of The Cloud's approach would net him the win before Brunhilda had a chance to react. She was already hurting pretty bad from the hits she'd taken earlier in the match from the Dire Elephant after all.
Apparently it just wasn't enough. Her late match rage seems to have given her the stamina required to out last The Cloud.
Just barely though, from the looks of it. The clerical staff seems to be in quite the hurry to get to Brunhilda and apply some healing.
