Despite it being nearly impossible for anyone to make out what is going on, The Cloud of Death didn't too to bad at impressing the crowd in the Grand Melee.

Well, he certianly did better than Elgin, but I think that had more to do with the fact that it was all that Elgin could do to stay out of trouble.

Maybe, but Elgin's drawn another bad starting postion, so he's going to have to be creative to dig himself out of this hole.

The Cloud of Death, Elgin, introduce yourselves to the crowd.

The Cloud of Death:
Crowd Attitude: 0.5

Elgin:

Moniker grins as he looks at the dancers in the audience. It was a pleasant ride to the Arena today...the view was nice. It should be obvious where the have come from.
In responce to the announcer's words a low rumble emits from the Cloud of Death as he casts his spell to impress the crowd. He touches his the spiked chain he wears around his waste and the Cloud of Death seems to expand as a bit of a lesser (in comparison to the cloud itself) darkness falls around him.

OOC:
Cast Deeper Darkness on his masterwork spiked chain.
Uh...sorry for making the graphics for it difficult. :(

Elgin glances at the landshark before contemplating the crowd -

Rules are rules - I can't slaughter the beast yet, but should I not, it gains an advantage, as would moving away from it. Let us try a bit of a gambit, then.

They so fear my blade they must press me right against the beasts! Fear not, dear Moniker, you won't have to hide for long! Grindle, get up here!

Elgin prepares for an assault against the bulette by doing a rapidly spinning defensive manuever, his halberd a blur of motion, while speaking a few words of arcane power, and there are now several images of the warrior. He takes a deep breath, readying himself.

[Free action for talking to the crowd and another Free Action to Power Surge. Taking a standard action to cast Mirror Image, using a "display" to make it attractive to the crowd. Dodge and Karmic Strike against the bulette, as well. Any AoO be for non-lethal damage, though, since the beastie is being held, I don't anticipate this being an issue. Have Grindle move a safe path in Elgin's general direction, please.]

You know, you'd think that these gladiators would know that it takes much more than a simple spellcasting to impress this crowd. I mean, these guys are supposed to be professionals.

Maybe, but you know, you do what you can. It's not like the crowd can see exactly what the Cloud is doing most of the time anyway.

Be that as it may, they're both paying for underestimating the monsters. The Behir has made shocking impression on The Cloud, and the Bulette is taking out Elgins like they were going out of style.

At least Elgin got in a reciprocating strike and was smart enough to obey the rules. The Bulette may not care if it kills a gladiator, but Duke Soloth would be sorely upset if Elgin killed the Bulette. Capturing a new one would be an expensive proposition.

Elgin has 24 hours to post his round 2 action.

Little landshark, you shouldn't carry on so - now catch both ends!

Elgins begins a murderous spin with his weapon, moving the halberd so quickly that an observer can barely see it. He presses an assault on the creature, intent on bringing the big bulette down, deftly bringing both blade and butt into play. He whispers a soft incantation in the split second before he brings his weapon down.

[Full attack with Spinning Halberd on the bulette, using an immediate action to cast Wraithstrike. All attacks (and subsequent AoOs) are for non-lethal damage. Should the bulette fall this round, Elgin takes a 5-foot step to D20, otherwise he stands his ground. Dodge target is the bulette, Karmic Strike on Bulette.]

Moniker scowls silently as the lightning rips through him. He makes mental note of the annoying monster to not allow it to do that again. Finishing another spell he spreads his senses out while moving away from the creature that attacked him.

OOC:
Standard action - cast Freedom of Movement
Move action - move to c9
move silently: 18 (includes -5 for moving greater than half normal speed), hide: 15
free action as part of move - draw giant wasp poison from pocket as part of a normal move
free action - listen check to notice any nearby threats
Note: Death's Grip is held in off hand currently.

Elgin casts wraithstrike.
Elgin attacks the Bulette. Concealment 58, 46, 65, & 16 (needs to roll higher than 20). Blade attacks have a chance to hit, butt does not. 43, 32, & 17 vs. Touch AC 10. All hit. Deals 24, 20, & 25 non-lethal damage.

The Cloud casts freedom of movement.
The Cloud moves, attempting to be quiet and stay hidden, and drawing some posion as he goes. Move Silently 37 & Hide 34.
Listen 19. The Cloud notes the general direction of all creatures in the arena.

Astral Construct steps.

Grindle moves.

Round 3:
Bulette leaps to attack Elgin. Concealment 72, 53, 28, & 36. All attacks have a chance to hit (needed to roll higher than 20). Targets image 1 of 4 (Elgin is 4). 21 vs. AC 14. Hits. Behir steps.

Shield Guardian takes no action.

Elgin’s Power Surge expires.
Elgin Listen 18 & Spot 16. Despite The Cloud being kind of obvious, he is totally unable to follow his motion in the shadowy illumination.

Bulette:
Non-lethal damage: 93

Well, Elgin seems content to deal with the bulette for now.

Well, The Cloud is doing his best to mask his presense, despite two very obvious indicators of where he might be. Perhaps Elgin is just dealing with the threat that he can see first and leaving the threat he can't see for later.

Maybe, but beating the bulette won't win him the match.

*sigh*

"As much as I hate to waste more time..."

Elgin takes a single swing down on the bulette, with the intent on bringing him down. He then takes a step back to regroup a bit, and actually look up from him fallen opponent.

Wonderful - let's get away from this eclipse. I don't need to give Moniker any more of an advantage than he already has.

[Single attack on Bulette at +25. IF this attack does not bring it down, then change action to a full attack. 5-foot step to D21. Move action to Channel Spell (Vampiric Touch).]

He's right there somewhere, whatever he is, and I wasted time. Let's see if I can force his hand. And where is that bleedin' weasel?

Elgin moves a bit south, closer to the behir than he'd prefer, then sighs. He smiles (not that the crowd can really see it), casting a spell he should have spent much earlier in the match.

"Grindle, stay put friend."

Better to reset now than fall prey to rashness and impatience.

[Free action to tell Grindle to hide, then cast Dimension Door heading to S10. Move action to retrieve caltrops]

Note: Elgin’s action order has been edited so that he can accomplish everything.

Elgin orders Grindle to hide.
Elgin retrieves his caltrops.
Elgin casts dimension door.

The Cloud can no longer “see” Elgin (who is now outside his “visible” range) so his study is broken. Listen 38 vs. DC 13. Critical success. The Cloud is able to determine where Elgin has gone to by hearing.

Now Elgin's pulling a disappearing act!

Not quite, he's just moved way the hell away from The Cloud. Probably a good idea, if you ask me.

Not really. He may not be in any danger from The Cloud, but neither is The Cloud in any danger from him. I mean, come on, this is supposed to be a fight!

No one would know the grim thoughts going through Moniker's mind, much less that he existed within the Cloud of Death. Twisting his head about he senses around him as Elgin finished his spell. Spreading his senses out he grins as he notices the location of Elgin. For now he doesn't let on.

Instead he turns his insideous grin to where Elgin was just previously.

Wait how did - where did Grindle...Grah!

Elgin's reels as if shot in the head with a bolt, and tears run down his eyes from the pain he feels from his friend, but focuses, tries to put it out of mind, and makes a plan to recover.

The beast'll probably skewer you, Grindle. I'll bring you back. I'll not lose you. We'll both make him pay.

I find it interesting that you would attack the only defenseless creature in here, Cloud, though I would expect nothing less, you honorless cur! I'm over here! Drift toward me, and we'll do this right!

[free action for smack, free action to activate boots of speed, move action to move through hazards and jump (to impress) onto the platform in M13 (jump skill of +33). Standard action to cast Glitterdust, centered on Grindle's square (intent is to get rid of that deeper darkness penalty, when it matters)]

Rarely do words come from the Cloud of Death. This is an exception. Like gravel grating on broken glass, words issue from The Cloud of Death, "You decided to bring the creature in. It is fair...game." He puts emphasis on the last word. "Mmm...weasel. Come prevent me from devouring him, manling."

Gruesome crunching sounds can be heard from within the Cloud of Death...it brings new meaning to the name for Elgin.

OOC:
Moniker picks up Grindle and begins to devour him. I don't know what kind of action that takes but as far as it matters he is doing it with one hand with Death's Grip in his other.

Elgin casts glitterdust. Moniker, being a grimlock, is immune to the blinding effect, he is still, however, covered in the gold flecks.

The Cloud picks up Grindle and starts to eat him. (I’m ruling this to be effectively a coup-de-grace with an unarmed strike for lethal damage since Grindle is still alive). Deals 10 & 9 damage. Grindle is dead.

I heard what I thought was a shriek of pain, but it's been cut off now.

Given that Grindle had just reached Elgin before he pulled his quick relocation, I wouldn't be suprised to find out that that was the sound of a weasel meeting with a rather untimely end.

Whoa! Now Elgin is casting something.

Glitterdust from the looks of it, though I don't see what good that'll do with the smoke that surrounds The Cloud.

Well, this is something, and that is better than nothing -

Elgin sets his halberd down and quickly unlimbers his bow, taking aim -

Aim? What aim - I know where I stood last, so I can only guess that's where the beast stands now. I won't have such easy clues from now... on. Or perhaps I might.

[free action to speak and drop halbard on platform, move action to retrieve composite longbow, and a standard action to take a shot in E19 - Elgin's position from 2 rounds ago. Composite Longbow at +20 (including haste) 1d8+7.]

The behir's moving, so the beast is up and moving - let's see...

Elgin flourishes slowly, muttering a soft word, then abruptly air near the behir explodes in a cacophany of squeaks, grunts and skitters, as if dozens of angry weasels have appeared suddenly.

Elgin then drops down off of where he was standing behind the large platform. He takes hold of his halberd after he lands.

[standard action to cast Ghost Sound, targeting E11 - equivalent of 20 humans, 5-foot step to M12, Move action to retrieve halberd. If the hop down constitutes a move action, rather than a 5-foot step, enforce the move, not the retrieval, please.]

Here it comes... let's time i - crap! Roll with it.

Elgin falls to the ground then laughs.

Nice one! Applause for the... weird... cloud thing!

Elgin props himself up on his halberd, standing up once again, then places a focus on his weapon yet again.

It only has a few places from where it could attack me. There... and... well, there, if Yarden's tale is accurate.

[Move action to stand from prone. Standard action to channel Vampiric Touch into Halberd. Free action to give backhanded compliment.]

Moniker grins within his Cloud of Death as he hears the cheers of the crowd. The time is nigh. Gruesome thoughts pass before his mind and he gets lost in his bloodlust. He quietly chants the arcane words for a swift spell and he growls under his breath as his eyes glow red with anticipation and bloodlust. He begins salivating. All in all a gruesome sight for the none who would see it.

The Cloud of Death completely envelopes Elgin as he disappears from sight. A horrid crunching sound is heard and then a disembodied primal cry issues from the Cloud and a few streams of blood spray into sight. Further gruesome sounds can be heard from within before a large projectile can be seen sailing through the air towards the judges booth. As it lands it becomes slightly more discernable as the corpse of Elgin.

Moniker grins from within his Cloud of Death. As he exits the arena the darkness around the cloud once more receeds. His rage subsiding he chuckles (a sickening sound) at the noise from the audience. What a great deal I have worked out with the good Duke. I get to enjoy myself while the crowd asks for more. I could get used to this...
