So I'm sitting at the office (stupid internship) and I'm fighting a losing battle here to stay awake and alert. Any suggestions? Coffee isn't a viable option as while I might enjoy it, I can't seem to have it regularly. I try to drink plenty of water...but my eyes...are so heavy...

Okay i am an expert at staying away. there are several things you can do, but he most important one is to keep your mind active.
May i sugest a sudden flurry of posts.
And coffee isnt that good for staying awake. what you need is a big 2 litre bottle of Coke, Pepsi, or some other Cola soft dink.
I warn you Stay Away From energy drinks. It must be Cola.
If it gets to the point where you are really stuggling get up and walk to the other side of the room and back, or do 10 pushups. It is a small boost.
Untimatly you need to stay active, find something you engoy doing and do it, and see if you can have a conversation with some one.
I think that is the limit of my wisdom so i bit you well
oh one last thing, go pour COLD water on your head, and dont dry it off. It will drip onto your neck and wake you up.

-booze (not really an option)
-cold coke/red bull (red bull is the only energy drink that seems to work, drink a few of them)
-Keep physically active (not to wear yourself out but just enough to keep from being tired)
-Read dilbert strips, as you're an intern I might start calling you Asok for no real reason :)
-Monoploy (again not really an option) but in a real game of monopoly closing oyur eyes for a second will prolly mean that you lose. Games last for several hours. So if you can discretely(sp?) play that would work out well. Of course you would need to covince a min of four other co-workers to join in
what exactly is internship? is it just joining a company to learn the trade and work your way up to some status. Or is a temp thing more like work experience?
*warning ramble beginning*
I remember my work experience, it was at Oldham Council for some reason (Oldham being the town my school was located in rather than my house, and it's a craphole of a town). It basically showed what would happen if i didnt work hard at school. A week of installing PCs in public libaries, attemtping to explain to old women (libarians) what the computers were and how to use them, upgrading old PCs and other fun boring tasks

booze
No NO NO NO NO
that might work short term - extremmly short term but that stuff is a depresent. As in it will make you sleepy.
you are right about the comics, here is one that has managed to keep me and my freinds up all night before exams LOL

Well it depends on how well he can hold his drink.
He might not make itto the end of the day

Thats something I didn't consider
Although it would kind be funny if he was a featherweight attemtping the booze method of staying awake :)
Still i'd like to let him try and then he can report back :D

Then we are Agreed. Cadirus BRR and myself decided that you are to start drinking, and then tell us how if you managed to stay awake.

I'd hardly call myself a feather-weight and booze is NOT the key to staying awake. I had a beer at lunch yesterday and fell asleep in my chair by 1:30.
The other suggestions are good though...
And as far as my internship goes, it's just one of those things where I need a job during the summer when I'm not attending classes and this happened to be what I landed. It's really not related to my major, but the pay isn't too bad plus I have a fair amount of freedom.
Now all I need to do is persuade them that I do in fact need a hammock in here.

Booze works fine :)
You just need a casual way to drink while at work :)
The only time I can keep awake through to the next morning is when i'm having a fair amount to drink
although it also involves coke (mixers), twister and monopoly
so its compressing all my suggestions :)
It does catch up with you the next morning but the idea is too keep awake through the day, you can sleep at home
And I now understand internship, I was pretty far out with my opinion :)

This same discussion went on over at the 3ebb a while back. I can fall asleep anywhere; I've actually fallen asleep standing up. Anyway, to keep myself from falling asleep while driving late at night, I get a cup of really hot coffee. Instead of drinking it, I'd take the lid off and hold it; this way, when I started to nod off I'd spill it and burn my hand. Presto! Wide awake (for at least a few minutes).
Anyway, Zuntzu had a more reliable (and less painful) trick: wet your eyelids. For some reason it seems to work.

yeah that wetting your eyelids (lick your finger and rub it across) does work, but its fairly short term and just seems to hold your eyes open rather than making you not feel tired :)

Here is the simple answer....
The secret to staying awake is....
to not go to sleep
Hope I helped :)
Dunno about this, but if you know you have to stay awake then just drink like 8 or 9 glasses of water, that way latter on when your about to nod off you start getting a really unpleasent feeling that will help keep you awake I would imagine ;)
Either that or you'll end up having wet pants

I tried the eyelid trick last night as I was driving home (had a 40 minute drive after giving a guitar less and hanging out with friends). It works pretty well but as Rod says, it's short-term. It's a good thing I work in a cubicle here so nobody can see me periodically lick the tip of my finger and then run it across my eyelid.
Hell, I feel weird just typing that.

I find loud music, coke and/or any other caffine type drink, helps.

Oh yes make it loud , up beat, and angry music. Do not listen to Rasputina when you are trying to stay awake.

Coffee works great for me. I vommit and feel far to sick to sleep. System of a down is good music to stay awake to well most of it anyway. You could also rip out leg hair with pliers or facial hair, though facial hair is more painful.

try chocolate covered coffe beans if you can find them, i hear they work well. Although I doubt they taste nice
#It seems to me that this is tirdness through bordem rather than actually being tired, try a gameboy advance. The things are tiny and you can just get some addictive little game for it (a puzzle game like zoocube, maybe a strategy like Tactics Ogre or Advance Wars, or possibly an RPG of some description), you can hide it in your pocket and just whip it out for a quick play when you get bored, you should be able to do this in your cubicle without being seen, or just go to the toilet and play there :)

Definately LOUD LOUD music like he said earlier. Don't try and of that boy band crap though, or else the sound keeping you awake will be that of someone destroying your stereo. Try music that you can understand (IE not thrash metal), and that sounds good loud. After all, everyone needs their METAL HEALTH.

Tape your eyelids open and if you start to fall asleep, rip them off fast and hard. Pain is a great way to stay awake.
