Many many years ago, back when I was in college I wrote a novel called CONTINUITY. It was never published and remains in desperate need of rewriting. I'll get to it one of these days.
The premise behind CONTINUITY was tha all of reality existed between two polar spheres, which, for sake of convenience, we'll call Law and Chaos. There were no moral attributes t be assigned to either, as Law could be just as despicable as Chaos and Chaos as capable of good as Law.
Between these two polar opposites, all the shifting planes of reality existed. Most people were never aware of the other strands of reality that dwet but a hair's breadth (metaphysically) from their own.
Highly derivative of other people's work (Michael Moorcock and Roger Zelazny in particular?)? You bet!
The premise of the novel was fairly basic- you had a mercenary who would be summoned to various continuities contracted to kill someone or something, and his apprentice. No "save reality" epic, not even out to save the world.
I have often thought of running a game set in that vision of reality, complete with world hopping , reality shifting, mx-genre game. But what setting to put it in? D&D, despite all the various 3rd party products and expansions seems a bit limited. Tri-Stat seems a bit too much like I'm building my own game and frankly, not worth the effort for the reward.
So what about Amber Diceless?
This appeals to me on several levels, though I'm going to need to work on developing it and tweaking it.
Things that don't exist in CONTINUITY that AMBER has
The Pattern
The Courts of Chaos
Amber
The Logrus
Trumps
Things that do exist in CONTINUITY that don't exist in ADRPG
Wyrd- a liquid substance that may or may not be the basic building block of all reality. Used as currency by those that can travel between the realities.
More robust magic rules
The ability to pull individuals and groups to you using various rituals, advanced bits of technology, and/or sheer will.
A greater number of items that enable direct travel between the realities.
No need to elong to a certain bloodline/having to walk a certain piece of floor in order to travel through reality. What needs to be done:
New sorcery rules is first and foremost. I've seen variants, but none that I am truly happy with. This will be priority one.
Determining if there needs to be a mechanic to balance out the lack of Pattern and Logrus. Maybe break items down into lesser point values. Bears pondering when I have my book in front of me.
Once at least one and two is done, determine if there is enough interest here to actually run a game.Watch this sace for ruther ramblings and rantings, mutterings and mumblings.
