View Full Version : [D&D] Generic Spell Lists

After reading Unearthed Arcana, I've become smitten with their Generic Class system. For those of you without the book, what it does is replace all the miriad base classes out there with three genaric classes: The warrior, the expert, and the spellcaster. These classes, instead of recieving fixed class abilities, recieve bonus feats, which can be used to take feats or class abilities from a list (with prerequisites). The theory behind this system is that it simplifies choosing classes greatly by allowing the player bo essentially build their own class.

The problem I have arrises with the genaric spellcaster. You choose whether she's arcane or divine when you first take it, progresses in spells per day and spells known essentially at sorcerer rate, blah blah blah. The bit that causes concern is that, in the spirit of flexibility in character design, you can learn spells off of the cleric, druid, or wizard/sorcerer spell lists. While I like the idea of the flexibility here, what I don't want is for every spellcaster to start play with Magic Missile and Cure Light Wounds.

Is there a way around this that fits with the spirit behind these rules? Is it really even a problem? I could really use some comments here.
