View Full Version : Duel Arcana: Round 2 Match 4
Lord Twig
13th of April, 2006, 05:03
And to round off our day of we have had illusionist versus illusionist and sorceress versus sorcerer, now we have teacher versus teacher.
There may be some animosity there as well. Snap is new to the Arcane College and trying to make a name for himself, while Darek Emberstaff has recently left the college on less than friendly terms.
That sounds promising! A grudge match!
Please send me a private message with your prepared spells, spells cast prior to the duel, what you will have in hand, what spell(s) you will cast on the first round, and what action you will take on the 2nd round (either prepare to counterspell or total defense).

Darek enters the arena, slowly twirling a wand in his hand. His beard is a tangled mess and he stares disdainfully down his nose at his opponent before his focus changes and he starts to cast the first of his spells.

Darek is starting off with the ever popular invisibility.
Greater Invisibility actually, hopefully he has better luck with it than Tsao Tshu. Snap has cast up his Spectral Hand once again.
We will see if he has a chance to use it. Darek has gotten the jump on him in this duel and it doesn’t look like Snap can see him to try to counter whatever it is he is doing.
Darius, you have 24 hours to post Darek’s next action.

Darek chuckled evilly as he made his move. This... teacher that he faced had failed to learn even the most basic lesson... you cannot hit what you cannot see.

Wow! That cone of cold has blanketed the entire ring, just barely catching Snap at the end, and Darek is still invisible!
Snap seems to have dodged the brunt of it, but he has a tough match ahead of him.
Random, you have 24 hours to post Snap’s next action.

Snap shakes off the cold and smiles. "Well... if its a cold you want..." Snap makes a few gestures and says a few words ending it all with a smirk and a snap of the fingers.

He managed to catch Darek with it as well, but he is still up.

Ice Storm expires.

Darek is still taking advantage of his invisibility; he has sent a magic sword flying at Snap!
A Sword of Deception, despite the name it is very real. Snap’s mage armor seems to have saved him that time, but it is quite dangerous.

Slightly frustrated with his invisible opponent and this floating sword, Snap curses before whispering a few words and making a gesture, finishing again with his patented snap of the fingers.

http://www.cyberkeep.org/maps/m8r4t2.jpg
Snap just cast a spell and fell over!
Snap has placed his soul in a magic jar. From there he can attempt to posses people around him, but his body is helpless while his soul is gone. It’s a risky tactic.
We’ll see if it pays off.
Darius, you have 24 hours to post Darek’s next action.

"Ugh. I knew I should have invested in that Protection from Evil spell," Darek groans.
Instead of giving up all hope, he takes advantage of the reprieve and casts his next spell.
[OOC: Sent via PM again- here's hoping I make that Will save]

Snap:
HP: -8

Round 5:
Sword of Deception attacks. 8+9+4 (opponent helpless) = 21 and 7+4+4=15 vs. AC 12. 20% miss chance, 42 and 13. First hits, second misses. Deals 2 damage and Snap gets a -2 penalty on his next save.
Darek moves and casts Fireball. Deals 34 damage.
Snap attempts a Reflex save for half. 14+1-2=13 vs. DC 20, fails. Snap takes full damage.
Spectral Hand is incorporeal. 50% chance to be unaffected, 84. Spectral Hand is affected and attempts a Reflex save. 20+1=21 vs. DC 20, success. Spectral Hand takes no damage.
Sister Bessin casts Ranged Cure Minor Wounds to stabilize Snap.
Snap detects four life forces within range (90’), targets A, B, C, and D. A and B are more powerful than C and D. A and B are of approximately the same power as are C and D.
http://www.cyberkeep.org/maps/m8r4t2.jpg
Wow! Darek has turned up the heat with a classic fireball! Snap was already on the ground, but that can’t have been good for his body!
Sister Bessin has stabilized his body with a minor healing spell, but Archmage Odepheron is allowing the match to continue since Snap was not in his body when the heal spell was cast.
How will we know who wins and loses then?
It’s quite simple. Snap has one shot to take over Darek. If he succeeds he can say so and he has won. If he fails he can’t try again, as soon as he returns to his unconscious body he will have lost the match.
Random, you have 24 hours to post Snap’s next action.

Round 5:
Snap attempts to possess target B, which is Sister Bessin.
Sister Bessin’s Protection from Evil negates the effect.
Map is unchanged.
Wait a minute! Did Sister Bessin just say what I thought she said? I didn’t think she even knew words like that. What’s going on?
It sounds like Snap attempted to possess Sister Bessin! Archmage Odepheron has issued a warning to Snap. He won’t have heard it, but that won’t matter. Another violation and he will be disqualified.

Round 5:
Darek attempts a Spot check to find the magic jar. 2+4-5 (distance) = 1 vs. DC 0+16 (fine sized) = 16, fails.
Darek casts area dispel magic centered at SE corner of B5. Snap’s body, the focus for Magic Jar and the Sword of Deception are within the area of effect.
Dispel check against Magic jar, 11+9=20 vs. DC 20, success. Snap’s soul is sent back to his body.
Dispel check against Spectral Hand, 11+9=20 vs. DC 20, success. Spectral Hand is dispelled and Snap gets back 3 hit points.
Dispel check against Sword of Deception, 15+9=24 vs DC 20, success. Sword is dispelled.
Darek has cast a Dispel and Archmage Odepheron has called the match. It must have succeeded.
A valiant effort by Snap at the end, but he shot a little too high when he tried to take over Sister Bessin.
Surely just an error of judgement, but Darek is the victor for this duel!
Darek wins.

Darek brushed his invisible hands together and left the ring with as little fanfare as he had entered.
