Description
Lade is a tall, well built but ill-kept man starting to show signs of his age. A mess of tangled black hair hangs past his ears, hair that when clean shows many grey streaks.

Lade's clothes are predominantly different hues of brown, with several food stains and obvious patches on it from where it has been inadequately cleaned and repaired in the past. He keeps a clean and presentable deep-red tunic for when he needs to be presentable, but for day to day life Lade prefers to simply wear his 'comfortable clothing.'

In contrast to his hair and clothing is Lade's armour and weapons. His prized dwarvan waraxe is a work of art, the head sharpened enough to shave with and the staff stained darkly. His breastplate is well oiled and polished, and his steel shield gleams as it bears the mark of a broken arrow under a down turned crescent-moon.

History
Lade is a man on the verge of becoming old and one with nothing to show for it.

Lade was born in Alderwood, one of the many nondescript small villages that dot the land. His father was a farmer and he had two siblings, the eldest a brother who was set to take after his father and the younger a sister.

Lade seemed destined for a similar life until the day he turned 16. War had broken out and the lords were recruiting all who would gather to their banner. Enthralled by ideas of valour, and adventure Lade bid his family farewell and enlisted as a soldier in the Crennas Irregulars.

It was only a matter of weeks before the company officer - Captain Crennas - noticed Lade’s proficiency for the wilderness, a proficiency gained from a youth spent playing and hunting in the woods near his village, and Lade started receiving scouting missions. His success at these turned the young soldier into a full time scout.

The years past slowly as the conflict raged on and Lade’s youth was worn away before the horrors of war. Atrocities were committed by one side, then the other, then the first in a cycle that was as pointless and hate filled as the war itself. It seemed like it would never end, until one day, 6 years later it was all suddenly over.

Lade returned to the family farm where, as if in mockery of the things he had witnessed, things were almost exactly the same. His parents were older, his brother quieter, his sister was married and had had a son, but apart from that life continued as before.

His family welcomed him back with all the reverence of a war hero, but he could not settle back down to his old life. At night the war continued in his nightmares and during the day he longed for the excitement that existed outside the simple life of the village.

In less then a month of returning he bid his family a fond farewell and set forth to find his place in the world. At first it seemed the right thing to do. Lade found adventure, companionship, excitement, and treasure in abundance. He took mundane mercenary or guide duties most of the time, to pay the bills and await the next adventure that would sweep him away.

In short, he was content with life.

It was 10 years later that Lade reached what he thought of as the peek of his career. He and a small group of close friends spent years travelling the lands, seeking adventure and riches as a Fellowship of the Broken-Arrow.

They grew closer and over time Melonic their mage and Flitinia the thief became married. With Lade serving as a witness and Videdt their healer performing the ceremony, things seemed to be going better then ever. And for an entire year it was, then things started falling apart.

It started with some harmless flirting, long conversations while on watch or quiet moments of bonding when out scouting, but through it all a closer bond began to grow between Flitinia and Lade. Then it happened, a stolen kiss late one night by firelight.

The affair swiftly grew more passionate and the pair struggled to keep it a secret over the ensuing months. Such secrets were not made to be kept however, and eventually the Melonic and Videdt discovered their tryst. This spelt the end of the fellowship.

When he discovered the affair, Melonic flew into a violent rage and swore revenge on the pair before storming off alone. Videdt similarly left, though more disappointment then anger. Flitinia and Lade stayed together for a handful of more weeks, but the destruction of the company weighed heavy on them and they mutually agreed to part company.

Lade never saw any of them again.

5 more years past before Lade returned to Alderwood for the final time. News reached him of his parents passing away and the man rushed home to be there for the funeral. Through his grief the mercenary discovered that his once-home had changed and moved on while he had been gone. His parents dead, his brother soon to be a grandparent, it was not the same place that he remembered.

Despite it having been years since he was last there, Lade had always thought of Alderwood and his parent’s farm as home and it was with a shock that he discovered that it no longer was. For all intents and purposes he was homeless.

The seasons changed time and time again, slowly forming a long string of years that stretched back into the past and Lade realised with a start that near to 20 had gone by.

He was getting old and still living the same restless life of his youth. His companions had either long since settled down or died in misfortune. 42 winters old and all he had to show for life was the grey in his hair, wisdom in his eyes, a borderline unhealthy appreciation for alcohol and the countless lives that had perished on his blade.

Lade faced a choice. Try and seize the last chance he would have to make something of his life, or continue on in insignificance until old age and death finally caught up to him.
