View Full Version : Duel Arcana: Round 1 Match 3

Lord Twig
28th of March, 2006, 13:30
And on to round three! Right now we have Gimbal the Glimmer and Pretlin “Snap” Adenfellow entering the arena.

And in a quirk of fate the role of Dower Evoker will now be played by a halfling while his human opponent is the trickster.

It’s illusion vs. raw power in a match that promises to be something to see!

Please send me a private message with your prepared spells, spells cast prior to the duel, what you will have in hand, what spell(s) you will cast on the first round, and what action you will take on the 2nd round (either prepare to counterspell or total defense).

The crowd sits in anticipation as the first duelist enters the ring. Has appearence visible to none, only a black sphere waits in the corner.

((waiting in the corner of a round arena. Truly thou art mad.))

"I don't recall signing up to compete with spooky spheres of... darkness. Dare I attack the darkness? Nay, 'tis but a dweomer, meant to hide the ambient light. Pitiable, really. And I do mean that we should pity the poor sphere. So lonely... Tsk."

Gimbal stands out in the open, smiling, and waving at the observers around him.

Gimbal:
HP: 28
Protection from Energy, rest of duel
Invisibility, rest of duel
Nothing in hand

Whisper:
HP: 14
Protection from Energy, rest of duel
Invisibility, rest of duel

Snap:
HP: 43 (lost 3 from the spectral hand spell)
Mage Armor, rest of duel
Darkness, rest of duel
Spectral Hand, 3 HP, rest of duel
Nothing in hand

Initiative: Gimbal 1+0=1, Snap 7+3=10. Snap goes first.

Round 1:
Snap casts spectral hand
Gimbal casts invisibility
Round 2:
Snap can not target Gimbal to counterspell him
Gimbal prepares to counterspell Snap

The third match of the day has started and our duelists are casting their first spells!

Well Snap seems to be preparing his offense with a spectral hand spell.

That could be important later. Gimbal is completing his spell and… Well you can’t touch what you can’t see!

Another invisibility spell. Not a bad choice and not a surprise coming from an illusionist. We’ll see if Snap can deal with it.

We are about the find out!

Random, you have 24 hours to post Snap’s next action.

A smile comes across Snap's face, though no one can see it and he quickly gestures with his hands while whispering a few words. He finishes by throwing some dust into the air and flicking a bit of water at it from his pouch.

((casts ice storm targeted in Gimbal's area (duh)))

Gimbal:
HP: 28
Protection from Energy, rest of duel
Nothing in hand

Whisper:
HP: 14
Protection from Energy, rest of duel

Snap:
HP: 43 (lost 3 from the spectral hand spell)
Mage Armor, rest of duel
Darkness, rest of duel
Spectral Hand, 3 HP, expires round 90
Nothing in hand

Round 3:
Snap casts ice storm.
This triggers Gimbal’s readied action. Spellcraft check to identify the spell. 8+21-5(prohibited school)=24 vs. DC 19, success. Gimbal casts dispel magic as a counterspell. Counterspelling is an offensive action and breaks Gimbals invisibility. 13+9=22 vs. DC 20 (11+caster level 9), counterspell succeeds.

http://www.cyberkeep.org/maps/m3r3t2.jpg

I thought I felt a cold wind blowing, but I don’t see anything.

Gimbal managed to counter Snap’s ice storm. He lost his invisibility doing it, but I am sure he’s happy to avoid the storm’s fury.

Ice storm? That would have been a crowd pleaser. Maybe he’s got another one!

Chris, you have 24 hours to post Gimbal’s next action.

"Well, that was an unfortunate waste. So sloppy with such a rushed appearance - my apologies, good audience, but we shant let this go to waste completely. Let's really stink up the place, shall we?"

Clouds of sulphur dance about him...

With a flick of the wrist and a sideways glance, Gimbal completes his spell. He then moves to the side, sauntering really, smiling broadly.

((Cast shadow conjuration to mimic a stinking cloud, centered on M7. Note that this is still an illusion, and a 4th level spell, so the DC bump is in effect. Also moving to E11 after spell is cast.))

Gimbal:
HP: 28
Protection from Energy, rest of duel
Shadow Conjuration: Stinking Cloud, expires round 12
Nothing in hand

Whisper:
HP: 14
Protection from Energy, rest of duel

Snap:
HP: 43 (lost 3 from the spectral hand spell)
Mage Armor, rest of duel
Darkness, rest of duel
Spectral Hand, 3 HP, expires round 90
Nothing in hand
Nauseated. Unable to attack, cast spells, concentrate on spells, or do anything else requiring attention. The only action Snap can take is a single move action per turn.
Total concealment (50% miss chance and can not be targeted using sight) from the cloud.

Round 4:
Gimbal casts shadow conjuration to create a stinking cloud effect.
Snap attempts a Will save to disbelieve. 12+12=24 vs. DC 23, save succeeds. Snap has a 20% chance of being affected anyway. 13, Snap is affected by the spell. Snap now makes a Fort save to resist. 8+8=16 vs. DC 23, Snap fails and is nauseated.

Another stinking cloud! What do these duelists have against my nose!

This is just a shadow conjuration, but it seems that Snap still took a lungful of it.

A sharp pain twists and turns Snap's stomach. He leans as if to hurl, but holds back and gets out of the cloud as quick as he can without running directly to his opponent.

Snap is trying to beat a hasty exit from the cloud, but he didn’t quite manage to get out of it.

And the nausea is preventing him from doing anything else.

"You're going the wrong way! You need to turn around! Perhaps roll around a little bit - really, it's good for the lungpower! Hey! Did you hear me - Fine, be that way!"

Bring him down, to his knees

After speaking, move to H6, then cast Persistent Image in J3. The Image is Of a black pudding, and it will attack ASAP.

Round 5:
Gimbal moves then casts persistent image. Snap makes a listen check. 5+1=6 vs. DC 2, 0(strong voice)+2(distance). He hears the spell being cast but can not understand what is being said.
The illusionary black pudding attacks Snap. Snap is now interacting with it and gets a Will save to disbelieve. 11+12=23 vs. DC 24, fails. As a figment the black pudding does no damage. Faced with proof that the black pudding is not real Snap automatically disbelieves the illusion.

http://www.cyberkeep.org/maps/m3r5t1.jpg

Gimbal summoned a black pudding? He can do that?

It’s an illusion. But I’m not sure why he had it attack Snap, it’s just a figment and can’t do any real damage.

Looked like it scared the heck out of him for a second though.

Snap is sticking to the edge of the ring and moving away from Gimbal, but he is getting pretty close to that stinking cloud again.

"Alright, let's see what we can accomplish with a little thinking exercise, good sir! Whisper, stay out of trouble, if you please - over there, dear. Oh, and good illusion, be dismissed - really. Too embarrassing."

Be as a babe, and become simple.

Move to D6, with Whisper moving to C4, while talking smack, also dismissing Persistent Image. Cast Feeblemind, DC of 24 (and Snap gets a -4 to the save, on top of the -2 Wis penalty to his Will check).

edit - it helps to remember what spells you actually have memorized, instead of assuming. Man, I am on fire...

Lord Twig
7th of April, 2006, 05:31
Note: Dismissing a spell is a standard action, so the persistent image will have to persist for a little while longer.
Also, The protection from energy that Gimbal shared with Whisper was lost when Whisper moved more than 5’ away from Gimbal.

Gimbal:
HP: 28
Protection from Energy, rest of duel
Shadow Conjuration: Stinking Cloud, expires round 12
Persistent Image, rest of duel
Nothing in hand

Whisper:

HP: 42
Mage Armor, rest of duel
Darkness, rest of duel
Spectral Hand, 3 HP, rest of duel
Nothing in hand
Nauseated, expires round 9. Unable to attack, cast spells, concentrate on spells, or do anything else requiring attention. The only action Snap can take is a single move action per turn.
Squeezing, -4 to attacks and AC.
-4 to Int, Wis and Cha (Int 18, Wis, 8, Cha 4), rest of match
Feebleminded, Int and Cha set to 1, permanent

Round 6:
Whisper moves.
Gimbal moves and casts feeblemind. Snap attempts a will save, 6+12-2(Wis penalty)-4(arcane caster)=12 vs. DC 22, fails. Snaps Int and Cha drop to 1.

http://www.cyberkeep.org/maps/m3r7t1.jpg

Let’s see, what is Gimbal casting now?

It’s a feeblemind, bane of mages everywhere. And it looks like Gimbal’s softening up has been worthwhile, Snap was unable to resist it.

Archmage Odepheron is halting the match. He will call the match for Gimbal unless Snap makes some indication that he wants to continue.

Whether he does or not, Snap will get some ribbing about this back at the college.

Random, the match will be called in Gimbal’s favor unless Snap makes some indication that he intends to keep fighting.

Gimbal, laughing - bows low toward the judges, then the crowd, and with a flourish, proceeds to put on a small show for the masses, then heads back into the dormitories.
