View Full Version : Duel Arcana: Round 1 Match 2

Lord Twig
28th of March, 2006, 13:26
For our second match we have TarNoch and Frizznik Ficklefarm.

Another wizard vs. sorcerer match up TarNoch is a no-nonsense Evoker while Frizznik, who seems to have joined the Duel Arcana on a whim, has already caused annoyance among the more serious competitors.

Hey now! Just because he doesn’t do magic your way doesn’t mean he isn’t serious. I have no doubt there is some power in him. Will it be enough to withstand a determined dwarf? We are about to find out!

http://www.cyberkeep.org/maps/m2_intro.jpg

Please send me a private message with your prepared spells, spells cast prior to the duel, what you will have in hand, what spell(s) you will cast on the first round, and what action you will take on the 2nd round (either prepare to counterspell or total defense).

Tarnoch says not a word as he enters the arena. His focus is inward on the essence of the inner magical nodes that years of study has opened to the evoker. The deep place where he funnels the energy all around into arcane devestation is ready to be channeled at a moments notice. He tunes out all else in an effort to better focus on the task at hand.
The only utterance is a heartelt prayer.
"May Moradin protect me in the battle ahead, and may I honour me fathers."
The dwarf worked only one spell prior to stepping in the ring.

Frizznik is drunk on the excitement of the tournament. He has barely stirred from the front row of spectators as the novices and intermediates have dueled in brilliant flashes of magic. He wiggles his fingers to ensure they are feeling limber and adjusts his clothes just so. All of a sudden, he notices his opponent, and his eyes grow wide as he sees the wide array of magical implements about his person. With a few muttered words and gestures an aura of protection settles about his small frame. [cast first spell]

"Tra la, Tra lee, tra loo, tra lay!
Beware master dwarf, my friends will soon be here to play!"

He settles into a comfortable stance, his gaze intense on his opponent.

Round 1:
Frizznik casts resistance
TarNoch casts lesser globe of invulnerability
Round 2:
Frizznik prepares to counterspell TarNoch
TarNock prepares to counterspell Frizznik

Odepheron has started the match and the duelists are casting their defensive spells! Though it is a little hard to see exactly what Frizznik is doing.

Maybe for you, Frizznik has cast resistance. That is a pretty flimsy defense at this level.

And there goes TarNoch’s defensive spell!

A lesser globe of invulnerability! A classic defensive spell.

Well I know who you are rooting for, but I think you will find the little sorcerer has a trick or two up his sleeve.

Boomlaor, you have 24 hours to post Fizznik’s next action.

Frizznik tries to look very impressive for the crowd, knowing that his magical skill is somewhat less powerful, if more prolific, than that of his opponent. He steps forward to show he isn't affraid and he begins to read from his scroll. A chill fills the air as an enormous wall of ice comes into being.
[step forward to J7, cast wall of ice from the scroll in hand to form a sheet 9 inches thick, 60 feet long and 15 feet high, accross the arena through the D row]

Round 3:
Frizznik casts wall of ice from a scroll.
This triggers TarNoch’s readied action. Spellcraft check to identify the spell vs. a DC of 19 is automatic with a spellcraft skill of +18. TarNoch casts Dispel Magic as a counterspell, 7+9=16 vs. DC 18 (11+caster level 7 for the scroll). Counterspell fails.
A wall of ice appears across the D row. 7 inches thick, 11’8” high and 60’ long.

http://www.cyberkeep.org/maps/m2r3t2.jpg

Frizznik managed to get his spell past TarNoch’s counterspell and has divided the arena with a wall of ice, giving himself the lion’s share.

It’s from a scroll, but that does show some talent.

There sure is a lot of build up in this match. What is TarNoch doing?

Another defensive spell, nightsheild. Frizznik is going to find it difficult to land a spell if he waits much longer.

Feeling secure behind the wall he created (quite proud of that wall really, he'll have to tell his grandchildren about it sometime, though by the time they hear the tale it'll be at least a mile long and 40' thick), Frizznik sets to work, his tongue sticking out the corner of his mouth in intense concentration.
[ooc cast summon monster IV for 1d3 fiendish apes summoned into (in order of preference) E-F6-7, E-F10-11, E-F8-9]

Note: Spells of 3rd level or lower can not be cast inside of a lesser globe of invulnerability, so I have adjusted TarNoch’s movement to place him just outside of it. This will allow him to cast his nightshield spell.

Tarmoch cast fly on himself and then takes off. He rises just high enough to release a screaming column of sound that looks like a million bees over the frozen wall at his opponent.

Yeah, great Idea Frizznik,

the little halfling thinks to himself as he checks to see if he has any eyebrows left after that great blast,

It'll be SO much FUN to have lots of spells cast at you. This is even less fun than the time you volunteered to clean the stalls of the Magical Menagerie so you could get a closer look at the Hippogriff.

He shudders, unseen, at the memory of being chased by an angry mother Hippogriff after trying to pet one of her babies, and wrinkles his nose as he remembers how he escaped her by hiding under a pile of dragon dung (never could get the smell out of his favorite cloak).

As his inner monologue draws to a close, he continues with the duel. [pm sent]

TarNoch’s globe of invulnerability expires.

"So, would you like me to put on a show for you in my specialty now?"

In response to the cheers, he summons a celestial hippogrif and a fiendish dire bat and has them battle it out to the death. After he dismisses the victor to the plane from whence it came, he blows a kiss to a beautiful elf maiden in the crowd and rushes off to the dormitories.
