Welcome folks to our championship match. It may be the first, it may be the last, but the tournament title is up for grabs today.

That's right. With a win today, Burning Sand will secure his position as tournament champion. Lily, on the other hand, will have to win both today and tomorrow to do the same.

In her last match Lily proved she can hold her own against the bigger competitors by staying out of reach and pelting them with magic.

Yes, but by the same token Burning Sand has proven in his match against Krynn that he can completly nullify the advantages of magic if he can get a hold of his opponent.

So what it really comes down to is this: can Lily stay out of reach long enough to win not one, but two matches?

Let's find out. Lily, Burning Sand, introduce yourselves to the crowd.

"Well, the bigger they are..." Lily says with a wry smile. "Might as well get this started." Lily begins a playful dance, her images popping out at odd times. She has no misconceptions about the upcoming match, but figures that she should have fun with it. She intends to give Burning Sand a run for his money, 'Run' being the operative word. She will be running for this match and hoping that Burning Sand goes down before he can catch her.

Cast Mirror Image, dance/tumble to F34 (if this is more than 15' move to E34 instead). Use Perform: Dance using Tumble to assist.

"This is it then," Burning Sand thinks to himself..."Victory, and triumph. Another mage, but I've beaten mages before."

Weapon held high, Burning Sand marches out onto the arena floor, once again resplendant in the crimson armor that held the halfling's castings at bay. Perhaps, again, it would be helpful.

The glaive shakes in his grasp, as his hands grow long, sharp claws and the wolf's muzzle sprouts forth from his face again...the Stalker walks the arena floor once more!

Well, Burning Sand looks like he's positioning himself to prevent Lily from accessing the larger portion of the arena. He's going to make any attempt on her part to get away as difficult as possible.

Lily, however, seems content to stay fairly close to where she started. She's impressing the crowd, but not much else.

Holy! Did you see that? I think the keepers forgot to take into account the Digester's acid spray and the Dire Ape's long arms when they positioned those two creatures. One of them is going to end up very dead very quickly if this continues.

Burning Sand, you have 24 hours to post your round 2 action.

With a snarl, Burning Sand stalks across the sand of the pit, a wary eye on the large wolf nearby. Leaping up onto a small platform that shudders under his weight, he takes a look at the swarm of images about Lily.

"That won't save you, little one. I come!"

Move to I24 -> leap up onto I28 (over I27 if possible). If, as part of the jump, I can avoid the terrain penalty of I27, continue on over into I29.

Take 10 with the jump, if that's an option and would be sufficient.

Manifest Animal Affinity (8) for Con and Dex

Attacks of opportunity, granted against anything, will be lethal with Guisarme or Claw (as the opportunity allows).

Note: Taking 10 is only allowed during the first round (since the rules define it to be non-threatening). In later rounds only a special ability allows you to take 10 as the characters are in combat. Also, the long jump to avoid the debris has a DC 20 and failure would mean ending up prone. Private communication with Andorax has resolved Burning Sand to taking the easier hop-up jump to get on the platform without clearing the debris.

Burning Sand moves, hopping up onto a platform at the end. Jump 13+8=21 vs. DC 10. Success.

Lily continues her playful dance waiting until Burning Sand is right in front of her before she springs away jumping and rolling to avoid his grasping claws and lethal guisarme. Her run takes her past the dire wolf, which she dives and rolls to avoid. Reaching a strait shot she picks up speed and lightly leaps over some rubble and then onto a platform before coming to a stop.

Tumble at half speed away from Burning Sand to C31, then move to C29 to E27 and tumble at half speed past the wolf to E25, move to E16 jumping over the rubble in E20 and onto the platform. If she can she will also use the tumbling opportunities to try to impress the crowd.

Lily joins the battle for the audience's sympathy. Her playful dance turns into the story of a giant that met a little girl and became so frightened that he ran away and hid.

As she jumps down from the platform she mimes the meeting between the giant and the little girl. Then she portrays the giant becoming so scared that he runs and hides behind a wall. Finally she jumps up on a platform and pretends to be the little girl looking for the giant who finally gives up with a shrug.

Maybe, but Lily's spells can reach Burning Sand just as well as his arrows can reach Lily. Even better at the moment, since there are still 7, no make that 6, Lilys to choose from.

Lily bursts into action as if Burning Sand's arrow was her cue. Magic missiles fly from her hand as she spins away and closer to the half-giant. Her dance pauses once again after Burning Sand ducks behind his platform and Lily takes up a position behind another.

Move, dancing to H23 then I24 then I27. Use Perform: Dance to influence the crowd and Tumble to assist. Stand behind the platform and prepare an action to cast Magic Missile at Burning Sand as soon as Lily can target him.

Couple notes: Does Lily get and extra point of approval for the arrow that hit her image? And does Burning Sand lose a point or two (can't remember how many) for missing Lily and her images entirely?

Note: Lord Twig is correct about the crowd attitude adjustments being forgotten. Burning Sand should be 1 point lower, Lily should be 1 point higher. These correction have been made. I also made a mistake with initiative. Lily’s readied action changes her initiative to be just before Burning Sand. As a result the animals act first and Lily’s posted action is her round 7 action.

"Fine!" Lily mutters to herself, "if that's the way he wants it." Lily twirls to the North behind a platform, uncertain what the future holds, but determined to do the best she can.

Note: I would like to reserve the right to change my action based on the actions of Burning Sand. But I will try to be descriptive in Lily's actions and reactions.

Lily will dance to G32, and cast Glitterdust at the corner of I39/J40. Use Perform: Dance to amuse the crowd. If she ends up moving farther she will use Tumble to assist.

If Burning Sand is prepared to shoot her there is not much she can do, but she will change the target area so that Burning Sand is in the center.

If Burning Sand moves up to her she will Tumble at half speed away until she is out of reach then move to J30. The goal is to get the platform in I31 between her and Burning Sand and she would like to be at least 15' away if she can help it. If she still has time she will cast Glitterdust at Burning Sand.

Lily waits for a reaction from Burning Sand, but nothing seems forthcoming. The statements from the commentators seems reassuring, but Lily fully expects that Burning Sand might play lame duck.

Cautiously she jumps up on the platform in front of her and quickly, but quietly, moves forward, taking advantage of available cover, seeking her opponent.

Note: Still would like to retain the ability to react to unexpected actions by Burning Sand.

Lily hops up on G33, then moves to F34, D34, C35, C36, D37 and E38. Lily does not dance for once, but instead tries to Move Silently. As soon as Lily can target Burning Sand she will stop and cast Magic Missile at him. If Lily can not target Burning Sand she will ready an action to cast Magic Missile if Burning Sand comes into sight. (So if Lily can hit Burning Sand from C36 she would stop there. Also, Glitterdust gives Burning Sand a -40 to Hide checks.)

If Burning Sand has readied to move up to Lily, she will instead Tumble away at half speed and will retreat back the way she came until she is at least 15' away and has cover from Burning Sand. If she can still cast Magic Missile at him she will, but she would prefer distance over damage.

Lily moves, attempting to be quiet. Move Silently 12+5-5 (moving at full speed)=12 vs. Listen 19+2=21. The path that Lily is taking does grant her varying bonuses to her check, but even without these bonuses the check results above do not allow Burning Sand to pinpoint Lily’s location via sound, only the general direction. Burning Sand’s readied action is not triggered because of her movement as a result. He is, however, able to follow her general path, with the exception of the brief spot in the middle when she’s behind the tall wall.
Lily stops when she gains line of sight and casts magic missile. Since the spell has a verbal component, this allows Burning Sand another chance to determine Lily’s location using the same Listen check result. Listen 21 vs. DC 3 (base 0 + 3 for distance). Result is still not high enough to pinpoint Lily’s location, only the general direction. Burning Sand’s readied action remains untriggered.
Lily casts magic missile. Deals 3+4=7, 1+4=5, 2+4=6, & 2+4=6 damage. Crowd attitude towards Lily improves 1 step.

Lily quietly creeps up to the platform, moves along the wall and peeks around the corner. She sees Burning Sand sitting there, tensed and waiting. But for what?

Although Burning Sand hasn't acted yet, Lily still can't help but think that the Half-Giant is bluffing; still trying to draw her down his little corridor. In any case, he doesn't seem to have spotted her yet. She might as well take the opportunity to do some damage. Well, what ever Burning Sand's plan, Lily seems to be moving around with relative impunity and casting the spells she wants. Its a good thing that Burning Sand selected that Red Dragonscale armor, otherwise those scorching rays would have been alot hotter.

Burning Sand, you have 24 hours to post your round 12 action.

Burning Sand will sling his bow (put away properly) and ready the aforementioned action (he should still have his guisarme in hand).

Thereafter, he will continue to ready an action to move up to Lily as soon as he successfully perceives her exact location in each of the next few rounds. I really do not anticipate this changing unless something changes to seriously modify the circumstances.

Lily is baffled. She has now twice blasted the Half-Giant while he hides behind the platform and he just sits there and takes it. He did not even try to give chase.

A quick peek around the platform confirms that he is not around the corner. Lily moves away and over behind the low platform near the entrance to Burning Sands corridor. She needs to move uncomfortably close to the water to see, but there is no help for it.

Lily sneaks over to E39 and tries to see what Burning Sand is up to. She prepares an action to tumble/dance away to C36 if Burning Sand moves within 10' of her.

Note: After reviewing the rules on Spot, I noticed that an active Spot check is a move-action. As a result, Lily cannot move, make a Spot check to determine what Burning Sand is doing, and ready an action in the same round. The active Spot check will be ignored. Lily can still see Burning Sand when she gets line of sight to him, but she’s not spending the time to determine what he’s doing.

Lily moves, trying to be quiet. Move Silently 10+5=15 vs. Listen 11+2=13. Even without variable modifiers Burning Sand cannot hear Lily.

Well, Lily seems to be as confused as you. She's moving to get a better view of Burning Sand.

You know, this match is getting king of annoying. Burning Sand is just standing there and Lily is doing absolutely nothing about it.

Glancing over the platform Lily see Burning Sand standing exactly where she left him. She casts her last Magic Missile. If that doesn't get him moving, nothing will. Which seems to be the case since he didn't move for the last two spells she cast at him either.

Lily casts Magic Missile at Burning Sand. It he does not move Lily will try her spot check then take a 5' step to E38. If he moves up to her she will Tumble/Dance away to C36.

Lily casts magic missile. Since the spell has a verbal component Burning Sand has a chance to hear her and react. Listen 4+2=6 vs. DC 2. Burning Sand is able to determine general direction, but not exact location so his readied action remains untriggered.
Lily casts magic missile. Deals 1+4=5, 1+4=5, 2+4=6, & 3+4=7 damage. Crowd attitude towards Lily improves 1 step.

Well I wish she'd just leave the spells alone get close enough that something would happen. I came here to see a Gladiator Match, not a spell duel.

Lily just shakes her head as Burning Sand fails to react to the missiles slamming into him. It looks like he will get his wish, she will have to go in after him. She glances at her images and prays that they will protect her one more time.

She abandons her stealth and begins to dance, indicating to the crowd her intention to engage, finally, in melee combat. As a cheer goes up from the crowd she spins around the platforms and into the Half-Giant's corridor.

Move, dancing to G38, G40, I40. Use Perform: Dance to influence the crowd and Tumble to assist and avoid AoOs. Attack Burning Sand with rapier using Combat Expertise for -5 to Hit/+5 AC.

If Burning Sand moves up on Lily she will stop and attack as above.

Lily moves, dancing and tumbling to impress, but not trying to do so quietly. Perform (Dance) 3+10+2 (cirucmstance bonus from Tumble)=15 vs. DC 20. Fails. Crowd is not impressed. Move Silently 19+5-20 (dancing)=4 vs. Listen 19+2=21. Burning Sand is able to determine direction, but not actual location of Lily at any point during the move. Lily’s tumbling to avoid AoOs is not necessary because Burning Sand can’t take AoOs while blind.
Lily attacks. This makes noise so Burning Sand gets an additional chance to locate Lily via sound. Listen 21 vs. DC -10 (combat). Burning Sand is able to determine Lily’s exact location. However, since she’s now right next to him his readied action is superfulous.
Lily attacks. 2+15-5=12 vs. AC 13 (no Dex, -2 from being blind). Deflected by armor.

The hunter has suffered the strikes and indignities of his foe...long has he suffered, and greatly. His strength nearly gone, his eyes still blind...but his foe is at last within reach. Rising up to his full height, and with a roar of fury, he unleashes his attack against Lily.

Three unarmed attacks (Claw, Claw, Bite), all grapple attempts. First successful grapple to get ahold of. In the event of a successful grapple, manifest Expansion (expend focus to take 15 on the Concentration check) as a free action. If I still have a further grapple left, grapple to pin (and cover her mouth to prevent speech).

In the unbearably unlikely event I score all three grapple attempts, the third one will be grapple to deal non-lethal damage.

Note: It has been pointed out to me that Lily’s +3 crowd attitude bonus to hit was not taken into account last round. With it taken into account Lily would have hit and done enough damage to win the match (her damage is 1d6+8 at the moment, and Burning Sand has only 8 hp remaining). However, since Burning Sand has already posted, I will not go back and change the resolution of that action.

Burning Sand attacks, attempting to grapple. Lily has total concealment (50% miss chance). 76 out of 100 on miss chance. First claw attack whiffs (needed to roll 50 or lower). 53 out of 100 on miss chance. Second claw attack whiffs. 30 out of 100 on miss chance. 5+5=10 vs. Touch AC 18. Bite whiffs. Crowd attitude towards Burning Sand worsens 3 steps.

Dire Lion cannot get closer to any creature and remains where it is.

Round 16:

Lily attacks. 16+18=34 vs. AC 19. Hits. Deals 2+8=10 damage. Burning Sand is bleeding to death. Crowd attitude towards Lily improves 3 steps (defeating opponent without killing them).

Final Crowd Attitude Scores:
Bruning Sand: -3.0625
Lily: 31.5703125

Not that it matters. Lily's spells took too much out of Burning Sand. All it took was one small stab with the rapier to bring him down.

That's too bad really, but we get to look forward to another match up of these two competitors. If Burning Sand can figure out a way to neutralize Lily's spells then I think he'll have her.

Actually, I've gotten word that Burning Sand doesn't intend to participate in another match. I still awaiting confirmation, but we may be crowning our winner and crowd favorite shortly.

Match is over. Lily wins.
