Born to Fight, Born to Freedom.
Bollan was born in Sinst just over two decades ago. Growing up on the streets he turned to his natural talents, mainly beating the tar out of people. When he was only 15 he was hired as a Bouncer at a saloon. Unfortunately he fell in with the wrong crowd and sooner than later he was involved in a crime syndicate as an enforcer.
The law fell heavy on his shoulders when the syndicate was eradicated. Everybody it seemed remember his face. It didn’t help that he stood head and often shoulders over everyone else. Instead of indentured servitude he chose to become a gladiator. Through the grueling months ahead he was pushed to his physical maximum and trained in the weapons of a gladiator. However, due to his strength he would choose a two handed sword whenever he was given the opportunity.
The first two years were not harsh. Battles would come and go and while he always won either against other inexperienced fighters or again animals his life was like living in a personal hell. Then the day came that the Duke himself watched a game and made the champion of the day a free man. This gave Bollan hope that he could one day earn his freedom as well.
From then on he was Bollan the Bold. He worked hard and painted his armor like that of some demon. His helmet was done in an even more sinister design. In the arena he would whip up the crowd throwing insults at them and scaring them by running at them with his huge sword only to turn around and start the fight. He was also given to fighting dirty by throwing sand in his opponents eyes, stepping on his toes, and using his massive reach so that nobody could get in at him.
In one arena battle he decided not to bother with the crowd. He was scheduled for 3 fights that day and it would be a long day. Instead he though to make it easier he would just put upon the other fighter letting him know that he was a dead man if he put up any resistance at all. The day turned out to be rather easy. Both of the men he would have fought let him beat on their swords and shields until they fell to the ground and he stood over them with his blade. He spared both of course, even the one that had peed himself. The other battle was against a big cat of one kind or another. He had a bit of a fight with it, but after two hard swings into its head and neck it to lay on the ground whimpering.
It was another year and a half before his real chance came again. The Duke was at the games for the birthday of one of his sons who loved the arena. That day was a championship and Bollan toughed his way through his early fights as usual and came to the final fight fresh and ready. The Half-Orc standing against him was not as fresh, although they had given him new armor and you couldn’t see the wounds. He was a more experienced warrior and despite Bollan scaring the crowds and walking over his earlier opponents the odds were still against him at the betting table. Talg the Terrible was a hardened gladiator and deserved respect.
Instead Bollan let him know in the pit while they were getting ready that if he wanted to be spared he would have to put on a good fight. Bollan let him know that he was perfectly fresh without a scratch and knew he was tired and hurt and hiding a limb. Bollan basically made a deal that they would beat at each other back and forth and not let really hurt each other badly. Bollan would kick and punch Talg where he was already wounded to make it look realistic when Talg started to tire.
That day in the arena Bollan played to the crowd. “You arrogant sons of pride. Look at yourselves in the sun with your gold laced fans, fine wines, and finer ladies. Any 10 of you could not best me on my worst day because you are all pathetic! Your cheers mean nothing! Whether they are for me or another, the glory is in the fight! You in the stands can only watch and never know it. Like pigs you eat your fill waiting for the slaughter. BAH!” He beat his own armor with his sword making a horrible din and even pointed his sword at the son of the Duke screaming in rage.
When Talg was introduced Bollan paced swinging his blade about him. When the final flag was dropped he ran at him sundering him with a half dozen blows narrowly escaped by his mad parrying. In it he did one of his classic moves that everybody groined over and slipped out his foot to hit Talg’s ankle. Then Talg answered in kind and even limping swung his trident and net at Bollan missing him, but only barely. Another exchange of blows and Bollan had the upper hand and forced Talg against the wall where he caught his blade and slammed him against the wall. Talg finally squeezed out to the right and threw his net onto Bollan. This game him the time to put his hand to his back and scream out in pain, but Bollan was working out of the net.
Right before he was free Talg charged with his trident and pinned Bollan’s sword and then started hitting him with his forarm guards. Bollan laughed loudly mocking Talg and being right below the Dukes personal viewing booth. Then he threw Talg off with a boot to the chest which sent Talg’s trident flying as well. In a flash he was on his feet with his sword in hand blade at Talg’s throat. He looked up at the Duke for a thumbs up or down.
The Duke looked to his son who stood undecided. The crowd was booing Bollan loudly as they had not wanted him to win. He took off his helmet with one hand and kept the blade where it was with the other. His blond hair reflected the sunlight as sweat dripped down his face and his cold blue eyes stared like a hawk at the little man. It was the first time he had bothered to take off his helmet in any contest in the last 2 years and the crowd reacted by cheering. This brought the boys attention back to the matter at hand. It was his first test at having a mans life in his hands and he chose to show mercy.
In a big display he marched to the edge of the arena where all could see and put his thumb up showing all that mercy was given. A shared gasp went threw the crowd as Bollan tossed his helmet into the air and grabbed his sword with both hands raising it to strike what seemed a death blow into Talg’s exposed neck. Instead the blade struck tip first into the ground and stood there as Bollan leaned down and helped Talg up with both hands. The crowd held its breath until Bollan’s helm came crashing down on the pommel of his sword sticking there as like a soldiers headstone.
Before Bollan could help Talg, who had started to bleed again from his previous injuries, the Duke called the crowd to silence.
“Gladiator! My son has said I must give you a reward and as it is his birthday I am inclined to do so. I offer you your freedom if you would have it.”
Bollan looked up holding Talg under one arm on his weak side and said, “I gratefully accept your gift.” With that he saluted the Duke and then his son with his free hand before helping Talg to the pit.
Now Bollan the Bold is a sell-sword and adventurer. He is liked in that he gets the job done. However, some of his methods are questionable.
