Sophia is a woman of impressive build, powerful personality, and careful thought. Muscular, slender, and stunningly beautiful, her bright blue eyes tell a story of youthful wonder and occasionally give away her naivite. Her sunbleached blonde hair is usually tied back in a tight ponytail, but on more formal occasions, she'll let the long, curly locks cascade about her shoulders and down her back. Her skin, naturally pinkish and pale, being from a northern land, is frequently a deep tan from her long days spent relaxing in the glory of Pelor, the sun lord.

Sophia Franchesca was born to Lord Gavin Franchesca and lady Gwenneth Franchesca. The third child, she lived the easy life of nobility, but something always ate at her soul. There was more to life than dressing nice, going to parties, and eating well, and she found her answers through religion.

She always loved running free under the sun as a little girl, and knew that she wanted to make it her lifes goal to help others realize the beauty of the sun as more than a way to count the days. She attended the great cathedral of Pelor on a daily basis, learning from the priests and nuns, finding out more about the teaching of Pelor, and involving herself in heartfelt discussions about faith. The strength of her faith, the power of her personality, and her complete devotion to the church made her parents proud, and they paid for her tutelage, hoping that some day she would become a prominent nun in glorius service.

For 10 years she lived in the nunnery, immersed in studies, yet frequently sneaking away to run in the sunlight on the many beautiful summer days. Her skills with speech and oratory marked her for greatness, just as much as her incredible insights and talents in tending to the injured. Eventually she began to understand how to channel divine energy, and she became one of the most promising healers and servants that the temple had ever witnessed. Faith, devotion, and raw talent, coupled with a powerful noble family background, gave her the future she dreamed of as a little girl.

So, it was on a joyous day that she announced that she, the promising temple virgin, would march forth to search for the answers to the missing red moon, so that the souls of the dead would find their rest in Pelors sunny embrace. And for those dead that refused to be gentle, she had the blessings of the Sun Lord to strike them down forever.

So it was that Sophia left, equipped with the necessary weapons for self-preservation, and with her most treasured posession of all. A golden sun-disc through which she may spread the radiance of Pelor to the huddled masses, that they may know they are safe within under the eyes of the Sun Lord.

She would search out this band of ruffians called the Red Cult, and she would tell them not to fret, that Pelor would show all the way, and with faith and patience, the Sun Lord would convince whoever drives the chariot of the Red Moon to return to their duties. We need not worry or despair, for Pelor would never allow harm to come to us!

While searching for clues as to where these cultists must hide, she happened to simply run into a trio of them who were running swiftly down the street. She tried to stop them to talk to them, but they brandished cudgels and assaulted the innocent woman. She was barely able to remove her mace to fight back and subdue her assailants, and with her shield strapped to her back for comfort, she was quickly pummeled into unconsciousness.

When she awoke, bleeding from many injuries on her face and head, her armor was removed, she was shackled to a filthy wall in a gloomy basement, and her clothes were torn apart. A cultist was on top of her, and she could only scream.

She could only scream.

For weeks she was repeatedly beaten, questioned about demons, and they forced themselves upon her several times a day. Soon, she just stopped screaming when they had their way with her, she just retreated in her mind to the sunny fields she once ran across as a child. They told her then that there were bad people in the world. People who didn't care for Pelor or joy or happiness. She even stopped straining against the chains, and hung limply against the cold and dirty wall. She didn't care anymore when the corroded metal shackles dug into her wrists, causing more bleeding. She just retreated into her mind, and prayed for Pelor to send someone to save her, someone to release her...

Someone to give her her mace and holy symbol, and line up these bastards so she could have her revenge, one crushed skull at a time.

Character Questionnaire

Who were your parents? What was their profession and position in society?

Lord and Lady Franchesca, benevolent nobles in charge of a vast tract of land. Together, they bring forth cunning ideas on how to improve the lot of the common folk, while still strengthening the wealth and power of the Empire. Few of their ideas ever make it as far as the ears of the Emperor, but their views are hardly considered dangerous.

Do you have any familial traditions/legacies/curses/enemies/allies/patrons? If so what/who?

The tradition of family alliance through marriage runs strong in the Franchesca family. Her mother was chosen for her father to unite the influential land-holding Franchesca family with the wealthy mercantile Normand noble family. It was to be Sophia's lot in life as well, for her parents intended for her to marry a young nobleman, Sir Gavin DeWark. Sophia refused at first, then, in order to avoid a family scene, or insult anyones honor, she carefully orchestrated an excuse to wait for a handful of years, for she had duty to the church to complete before she could retire into the life of a noblemans wife, and the mother of their children. She does not intend to complete the marriage promise, and the time which she is to be married draws near. How long she can avoid the bonds of marriage, she does not know, for her family is eager to unite another family to their influence, and Sir Gavin is terribly smitten with the beautiful and headstrong Sophia.

She believes him handsome, and a gentle soul, but family titles and power have no interest to her. If he wishes to have her hand, he's going to have to earn it through heroics and romance.

She's spent too many nights listening to bards telling tales of romance and adventure, and she has an unfortunately misdirected view on what marriage means in the real world. Silly girl.

Where were you born?

Her family makes its home in the wealthy districts of Edinway, though the land that her family owns lays several days ride to the north and east. They have fertile tracts of farmland at their command, and a few mines that produce a respectable amount of useful minerals. No metals, but other useful minerals. The mines do not draw much wealth, but several of the farms produce an abundance of grapes in the summertime. The Franchesca vineyards rarely have a bad year.

Did any childhood events shape your personality?

Her childhood was all about being wide-eyed and full of wonder. She practically lived in a fantasy where everything was good and pure, seeing as how she was so protected from the hurtful things in the world. She believed in the innated goodness of mankind, and never believed that anything bad would happen to her, regardless of the warnings she would recieve.

Do you have any childhood friends/Mentors that you still see/keep in touch with?

Seeing as she just recently left the monastary to investigate the Red Moon, and this cult of thieves and murderers, she hasn't been gone long enough to really be away. However, Mother Hart, a 1/2 elven nun who has been with the cathedral for centuries, was her primary teacher, and they had developed a very strong relationship. Mother Hart basically considers Sophia as her own daughter, and Sophia regards her as a second mother and best friend, for Lady Franchesca was also a fine parent.

Did you have any childhood crushes/relationships? If so how did it/they end? Did you part as friends?

As a child, she was too young to feel her heartstrings pulled by another, and when in the church, well... virginity and all that. However, nearby there lives a young Knight named Sir Eberek, handsome, bright, strong, kind, and brave. He has been involved in many quests for the glory of the Empire, and for Pelor. His stories of combatting legions of undead, thwarting the vile plots of Necromancers, and other such fantastic deeds have Sophia swooning before his dark eyes and powerful personality. Whether or not his stories are truth remains to be discovered, but as far as Sophia is concerned, he's a true hero.

Who are your heroes?

Sir Eberek is a hero whom Sophia has a (not so) secret crush on. She doesn't talk about it, but most can tell just by how she looks at him. It's bleeding obvious.

Someone whom she finds fascinating, and adores as a peer, is a strange one to label a 'hero' for her. A simple elderly woman, widowed wife of a cobbler, who frequently comes to the temple to pray and donate bits of her meager posessions. The old woman, Maggie Forth, once stopped a thief who tried to flee the temple of Pelor with a golden chalice. With a punishing swing of her cane (likely mastered through years of child raising, and being married to a man who drank himself into the grave) she knocked the thief cold, broke his nose, and then sat on him until the guard could come and take him away. When asked why she did that, she simply replied, "Nobody steals from my home." Such a simple statement, and refusal to be praised for her act, filled Sophia with pride for the church, and adoration for an old woman who could scrap with the best of them, even though she could barely walk unaided.

Does your character have a code of conduct? If so summarize your personal ethics.

Everyone is redeemable. The thief can be taught to produce for himself and community, and the murderer can see the light of Pelor and still find a way into the heavens to meet his embrace. Sophia would never wish to harm another, and if anyones death could be avoided, she will make that effort to assure they are not taken to the red moon before it is their true time. She will attack only to incapacitate, and heal any harmed, be they friend or foe.

This has changed since her imprisonment, torture, and frequent taking of her virtue at the hands of the Red Moon cultists. Now she demands justice in its harshest sense. Those who refuse to find the light, will be shown the darkness, and they will pay for their sins for eternity. Any who attack her, her friends, or the innocents, will be struck hard and fast. The innocent will be protected at all costs. Innocents who are injured will recieve her healing before she heals herself, and the evil ones will be destroyed. If one is brought to a bleeding death, she may save their life if she feels they deserve another day under Pelors face, but only enough to preserve life, for they will then be brought to the law. If they are executed for their crimes, so be it, they made their choice.

What sort of things motivate you now? How does your loyalty to the Emperor compare with this?

Sophia's motivation and dedication to the Emperor have changed in method, but not result. She will defend herself, her friends, her faith, and her family. Because all live within the Empire, that means she will defend the Emperor as well.

What were your motivations in your youth?

Motivations were for faith, and joy. She lived the day smiling under the sun, and the night listening to the tales of bards.

Have you had any recent changes in faith/way you look at the world? If so what? How did it/they affect you?

Her imprisonment, torture, and rape. For several weeks she was subjected to the horrors of the Red Cultists, and despite her pleading for either mercy, or at least death, they continued their sick and demented actions against her faith and her body. Now, any stranger could be a horror of a man. Anyone might be willing to slit her throat for her purse, or drug and rape her for their sick pleasures. She only feels comfort now when she is alone under the sun, or at least with trusted and goodly people. She will be a long time in recovering, and when she can stand under the sun, a small part of her innocence still struggles to be shown. She can never marry now, for love or for family duty. She is ruined as a woman, and damaged as a soul. She balances between despairing sadness, horrid flashbacks, and simmering vengeance.

Describe your adolescence.

Done in backstory.

Does your character have any firm beliefs on what motivates the Red Moon to appear?

Nothing very firm on the Red Moon, only knowing that it escorts souls to the realm of the dead for their judgement. She views it as a vessel, neutral and unfeeling in nature, like a carriage pulled by domesticated and tame horses. It arrives, it does its work, it leaves. It is an important part of the cycle of life and death, just as the sun escorts the day, and the moon escorts the night. Does it even need motivation? That she doesn't really know. And after her experience with the Red Cultists, she doesn't care. If it were up to her, the red moon would disappear forever, and Pelor would use his glory to draw the goodly souls to his warm embrace, and banish the cruel souls to a horrible burning punishment.
