[At some point after the report to Benedict and possibly after the report to Random if the Landon group is shuffled off to Amber]
[to facilitate a group conversation I have opened another thread so that Dave does not have to make huge edits in the middle of our regular threads, forgive whatever license I take if I am off base]
Feelings the pricklings of what he can only imagine is a trump contact Heldrik reaches out and deftly snags a hand from both Gray and Arrotel while he staves off the potential attack.
"…contact…trump…ready!"
Heldrik stops resisting the contact and feels a strong military mind putting intense concentration towards him. Roland’s visage looms as Heldrik, Gray, and Attorel look back at him collectively.
"Roland?" Heldrik says with easily noticeable relief.

As soon as Roland gets contact he eases up on the force.
"Heldrik, hel...What's wrong?" Roland breaks off before his sentance even gets going, sensing something amiss.

In as cassual and nonchalant of a voice as he can muster, Arrotel answers the question.
"Well, the others won't let me summon Benedict to help in a snowball fight, we found a shadow dweller who can do trump like things, and got shot at once by some guards. That's really about it.
Oh, and by the way- Landon just got stolen in what we think was a trump contact. Looked like he was fighting mentally as he faded out."

"To be honest, we fully expected to be targeted by trump attack so we planned on meeting whatever took Landon with all three of us to face it down."
[Unless somebody stops him from talking with an invite through or warns him to not say to much cause trumps might be monitered]
Despite Arrotel's humor the summary that Heldrik gives is a little more detailed. It excludes his own little side adventure, the load of fluff that Landon would normally interject, and anything that happened after Landon's apparent abduction. He makes some clarifications for Roland or anybody else that joins the contact as needed.
"Thats about it. The Maze seems to be another primal or semi-primal power, different than Broken Pattern, and does not seem to be a direct offshoot of the regular Pattern like broken does."
Heldrik's expression invites questions and comments.

Gray looks at Heldrik and Arrotel: "If that would suit, gentlemen?"
To Roland: "We have a companion-" she indicates Asmundsen with a faint smile "as well...he is under our protection..."

Heldrik holds off a moment and makes a comment for Asmondson and the troops on loan to gather. Then he accepts Rolands hand and the group with a little effort is pulled through.
"I take it this place is safe?" says Heldrik as he warily takes a look around the room smiling to Raevyn, nodding to Katarzyna, and giving a small bow to Josh as the assumed host. Heldrik is missing a boot, scabbard, and apparently his blade.

Kat pushes away from the wall as the Trump contact seems to strengthen and materialize with the appearance of Heldrik and Co. Her gaze brushes over the faces she knows, lingering a little on Asmundsen for a moment before turning completely to Arrotel.
"I am," she smiles in acknowledgement of Arrotel's statement, "Well met, brother. I was not certain when we would have this moment to become acquaintained."

"Perhaps you should sit, Heldrik," she suggests, glancing down at his recently-injured foot, speaking quietly so as not to disturb the meeting between Arrotel and Katarzyna.

Roland closes his sketch book, putting it away and looking over the newcomers, particularly Asmundson and Arrotel.

Rae looks around, noticing especially that there is a stranger, and that Gray looks rather disquieted, holding onto Heldrik. She then heads over to the door and slips out, looking until she finds Jaime. "Please don't think me presumptuous, but there are suddenly several guests in the study; I don't know how long they'll be here, and Josh will likely give you further instructions later, but for now, perhaps some refreshments should be brought up. A soothing tea, at least, please. Thank you."
She smiles apologetically and returns quickly, quietly to the study, planning to ask either Kat or Josh to fill her in on whatever she may have missed later.

Kat speaks quietly to Arrotel, "We have much to speak of but once matters of more import have been seen to." She then turns her attention to Roland and Heldrik, anxious to hear of what has befallen Landon but not as quick to dismiss the shape her cousins have arrived in. Speaking softly, she makes her way to stand by Roland's side, "Give them a moment to settle, Roland. I think we could all take the time to get comfortable and then listen to Heldrik's account."

Arrotel will take a moment to speak quietly with Asmunson off to the side, telling him the names of those he in the room, and if there is time, a little bit of the more recent family structure. He seems content to let someone else explain the situation this time.

“I see some details are needed to help flesh out the situation for you,” says Heldrik from his seat. With a smile down at Gray he appreciates her attention.
“Landon decided that we should leave immediately out of Amber. Since I was going to be picking up Darius, Quinn, and Ethan here he gave me his Trump and I traveled out of Amber while he got the others ready. We traveled to Landon’s Shadow Englund and visited another Asmondson who had passed away.” Heldrik indicates the new comers.
“Landon’s story about a shadow trump artist was correct and it seems that Asmondson had some hand in getting Landon to rescue Lady Agraynel, although not specifically targeting Landon he says. Asmondson claims that he trapped Siodmak in the shadow that Landon originally found himself in for many years trying to cure his evil ways. With his able help we traveled to the Story Book shadow, which we discovered was a constructed shadow only about 50 miles wide and turns in upon itself.. In that shadow we discovered a trump that depicted Siodmak and a Joakim. We utilized the trump to contact Joakim out in Siodmak’s home shadow and fambuzaled him into bringing us across. We captured him in a firefight with his troops with Lady Agraynel and Telloth’s help. He currently resides in Amber under watch as we assume he has already been interrogated.”
Heldrik accepts some tea as it arrives and seems to have paused to collect his thoughts for a moment and then continues.
“We escaped back to Landon’s shadow and after a night of rest proceeded to Asmondson’s shadow to take a look at the Maze which he described as a source of his and Siodmak’s power. There is also one in Siodmak’s shadow, but considering the shadows hostile nature, it was deemed that Asmondson’s version would be safer to initially view.”
Heldrik notes that Arrotel is speaking on the side to Asmondson and smiles with approval as he keeps him distracted from interrupting.
“The Maze is in an enormous cavern, perhaps two hundred yards across. It is pulsing, changing, and shifting like a slow-motion wave of green glowing gel in an invisible swimming-pool. Like the Pattern it seemed to have a starting-point partway around away from the front enterence. I had decided that further study was needed so I started walking around the cavern looking for any regularities in the shifting and pulsing. I had planned on using Pattern sign to augment my natural perceptions, but that caused problems.”
Heldrik’s expression seems a bit in flux from pleasure to pain, but he continues.
“I know no other way to describe it but as a kiss from a primal power. For a few moments I was trapped by bliss so engaging that I felt nothing else. I have been told that my scabbard burned and melted, the metal fastening dripped onto my boot melting the leather there and eventually the top of my foot as well. It was about that time that Lady Agraynel shook me out of my stupor to help me with my foot problem, which I painfully discovered still existed a moment later.” With a smile he says, “She is most skilled.”
After a pause of slight indecision, “It seems that the Maze and the Pattern as powers do not exactly get along as I never got the Sign of the Pattern up to take a look at the Maze.”
“It was while I was being attended to that Landon seemed to receive a trump contact. Something happened to get our attention and we saw him swirl into a rainbow with a grimace on his face. Arthur seemed to have sensed something wrong and narrowly got himself pulled out with Landon. We immediately tried to get Landon by his trump, but after much effort found it was fruitless.
[We are assuming that we also talked to somebody in Amber about Landon’s disappearance]
“We contacted Benedict to pull us out and provide us access to Amber by Trump as among the three of us we have trumps for only Landon and Benedict,” he says showing them the trump of Landon that he was given. “Shortly after Roland gave me a call, but not knowing who it was I pulled Lady Agranel and Master Arrotel onto the call in case the same force that absconded with Landon was making an attempt to capture myself. Now we are here, without the his Majesty’s appointed leader for our group.”

Raevyn nods, glancing somewhat apologetically to Josh. "I took the liberty of finding Jaime and having something brought up; you all look as though you need it."
As she listens to Heldrik's account of what happened since they left Amber, Rae considers the Trumps they made. "Seems like you've accomplished quite a bit, really; we're still getting started. We took the time to make a few Trumps before heading off, while we decided on our course of action. We were trying to call Landon to relay some information and copies of the Trumps."

Arrotel finishes discussing relations with Asmunson about the time that Heldrick finishes summarizing.
"You are correct on the events, but I'll have to disagree with one of your deductions. I don't think that the Maze is on bad terms with the Pattern- just defending itself. Remember, those who have read the book, Merlin's description of the encounter between the logrus sign and the pattern in castle Amber. It blew out a sizable section of the building, but Merlin himself was able to hold both the Logrus and the Pattern in himself without incident for many years, and does to this day. The maze may simply have been defending itself from your pattern sword, as opposed to you. I am confident that there would have been no danger to myself if I had walked it."
Arrotel seems a bit surprised with himself for such a long talk- he usually keeps his explanations far shorter, relying on others to make grand speeches.
Thanos
29th of September, 2004, 08:48
Heldrik’s tone is confident and direct as if talking to an equal in a discussion of facts.
“If it was defending itself from the blade, would it not have done what it did when I first entered the cave. I was no nearer to the Maze physically when I tried to pull up the Sign. The blade reacted to what the Maze did or it reacted to the blade after it had reached out and touched me, not before. It kept itself from being scanned close up, I am sure of it.”
“Theory being what it is….I do not know this Merlin fellow, but in Amber only the direct descendants of Oberon can walk the Pattern, right? If the power in Chaos works the same way then perhaps Merlin has duel heritage? His situation might be unique?"
"It seems that the Maze will allow mortals like Asmondson become initiates as does the broken pattern, if Landon’s account was correct. However, as you have said Arrotel the broken pattern could not engrave itself on you as you had a higher order power, the Pattern. Some things to think about, since we do not know for certain.”
Heldrik finish's off his tea and takes off his other boot. Having one foot in a boot and one foot out of a boot is annoying.

"Well whatever it is or turns out to be, I'm certain further investigation will prove exciting not to mention time consuming." Kat goes back to leaning against a wall, "But I take it you're no further forward in actually locating Siodmak or Elress, meaning you've arrived at a triple junction when we factor in Landon's disappearance. So where do we all proceed from here?"
She looks at the gathered other party members, one at a time. "I don't suppose your group received any further instruction in how to continue? We do have some information regarding Siodmak that needs to be passed along." No need to dally around any further, especially if Siodmak had anything to do with Landon's disappearance. Forgive me Roland, but Arrotel needs to know.
"Siodmak is our brother, Arrotel. So knowing that, and knowing that he has some connection to this Maze, I now wonder if it would be possible for Siodmak to Walk the Pattern. If so, would his power associated with the Maze be lost to a power of a higher order? What other effects might it have? It should also be advised that Siodmak is somewhat similiar to Merlin in that he possesses dual heritage. His mother was from the Courts. That is all we know at this time, but I do suggest to all and sundry that regardless to our relation to us, none allow that to affect their judgement in their dealings with him." That should be cold enough to the point. Kat's gaze falls upon Arrotel, "If you have no choice but to strike him down, then that is what you must do."
Thanos
29th of September, 2004, 11:12
Heldrik seems to consider what Kat has said with some deliberation.
Good guesses, yes, but this revelation that Siodmak is yet another of the Lord Generals children is disturbing. Three kids for him, and only one or occasionally two for the others. Seems odd, but then again, perhaps the Lord General has been around longer than the rest. The others certainly give him a great deal of respect it seemed. Do I have a brother or sister by a different mother? On a different note, perhaps Landon was abducted to be used as a prison in exchange for Joakim? Damn, well thats perhaps what he deserves for his ill fated plan.
[this is where the players often give the GM insidious ideas]
"I have had a rather disturbing thought. If, as I suspect, Landon was kidnapped by Siodmak it could be inferred that he knows that Amber has Joakim. He may wish to perform a prisoner exchange, as it were, Landon for Joakim. The question is how to verify this theory without tipping off Siodmak should he not know about either."
Pygysys
29th of September, 2004, 12:15
Kat shrugs, "Well if that was indeed the case, then I suspect it is only a matter of time before Siodmak sends ransom demands or a prisoner exchange request to those in power in Amber."
She shrugs again, "Should it prove to be someone else aside from Siodmak responsible for Landon's disappearance, then I would expect the same if a ransom is what they are after. It could be possible that they have no intent for such a thing and are an enemy of Landon's, or that his abductor could also be the same person responsible for Joss' assassination."
Kat looks between Roland and Raevyn, ignoring Josh, "What do you think, cousins? Should we proceed with our own agenda as planned? Or have these most recent turn of events altered our course?" Whilst waiting their replies, she moves away from her wall spot yet again and moves towards the Orphans who had been riding with Heldrik.

Gray looks up.
“May I ask, is Siodmak aware of his parentage?”
Not worth being angry that this information was kept from us.
She hesitates, biting her lip briefly, then decides to say what is in her mind.
“It may, perhaps, matter.
“From what we learned of him before our orders changed, I do not think he is indifferent to the idea of family, of belonging somewhere. He went to the trouble of finding Joakim, who is like enough to be his Shadow. In fact, I think he has found several versions of him over the years – he felt the need for a ‘brother’, someone to share things with and trust.
“Asmundsen,” she smiles over at Challenger “says he spoke of Joakim constantly during his time in Fern Hollow. Though I dare say he would be most reluctant to admit it, offering him a place in a true family might hold appeal, when we must deal with him. At the very least, it might cause him to hesitate at a useful moment.
“On the subject of Joakim, if Siodmak has found Shadow replacements before, we hold nothing he would trade for.”
The corner of her mouth twitches in a lopsided smile. “While I’m talking too much,”
and probably making a fool of myself
“I’ll add what would have been my suggestion for where he might be found, had we not been pulled from the hunt. Siodmak desires power – perhaps for security, perhaps for its own sake. He must have seen that in Amber he could have that, even if he did not suspect he were Family. If he has gone elsewhere, would it not be somewhere he believes he can, um, can make a better deal? To me, with the knowledge we had at the time, that suggested back to the Keep. However, if he is aware of his heritage, it may mean the Courts of Chaos.”

"Siodmak didn't seem aware of his parentage when we first met in the Keep, though Dunstan claimed to have the knowledge. If Siodmak wants either power, or information, he may very well try there first, to find out whatever Dunstan was hinting at. If he's got Elress as a partner, rather than a prisoner, he might feel confident enough to take him on; he wouldn't have tried the first assault without Joss, and the thought that Roland or I would have pitched in on that ill-fated attempt of theirs once we saw what was going on."

Gray nods. "Even the use of the word 'brother' on Dunstan's part might be enough to lure Siodmak back there eventually; to learn what was meant."
I know what a strong lure the offer of a brother can be, after all...
"I suppose it's even possible that Siodmak had 'signed up' as it were with Dunstan during your visit, then staged an attack to 'show' they were not on good terms. The incident made a great excuse for Dunstan to 'let' you all go, whereupon Siodmak was brought straight to Amber..."
"Elress...I seem to have heard her described as the child of both Bleys and Fiona on different occasions...an odd thing to be unclear...does it seem possible to anyone else that she is actually Brand's? If so, she might well be interested in going with Siodmak to the Keep, meeting Dunstan..."

“...perhaps Merlin has duel heritage? His situation might be unique?""With regards to the Pattern and Logrus perhaps, but the maze has accepted mortals- blood doesn't seem to have anything to do with it, so no duel heritage should be required.
"Well, as I was reminded earlier, our job was to bring Sidomak back alive if possible. As for the necessity of killing him, I strongly doubt that I will be the one to make that choice, for which I am glad. In mental combat, where I could possibly help, it would be to immobilize him, not kill. In physical combat, I would not be of much help anyways."

I've always heard she was Bleys'...her temperment fits, she's not, umm, bipolar the way Brand seemed to be...but I might be able to find out. Umm, I mean, if it was important enough to call in favors.""Not critical - probably not even important." Gray sounds faintly apologetic for having gone off at a tangent. "My thinking was that a child of Brand's might feel common cause with another 'outsider' as it were. And have good reason to want to know more about the Keep, since it is linked to people who were linked to Brand. I was really trying to puzzle out whether she was with Siodmak of her own free will or not - how worried we should be about her, or not...everyone just seems to forget about her..."
The more people pay attention to what Gray is saying, the less comfortable and coherent she seems to to be.
Get it together, would you Gray, and stop babbling?
"If Siodmak's background might be important in figuring out his motives, then it might do to pay some attention to Elress's. If we are still considering she might have gone of her own free will? That's all I was suggesting. And I suppose I was trying to figure out why she might voluntarily take off with someone as unpreposessing as Siodmak. I don't think his personal charm would do it, if he's anything like Joakim. Then again," an expression of distaste flits across her features, "she had mated with him, so perhaps he has charms we aren't aware of."
She looks down at her hands, hair swinging to cover her face.

Josh shoots back, "Sounds like that makes it pretty simple, umm, Agraynel, without orders, you can do what you want. Maybe you should figure a way to send a report in to Amber, write a letter or something, then just go do what needs to be done. Joss is dead, Landon is kidnapped, Elress and Siodmak wanted for questioning...I think you have ample reason to do whatever you see is in Amber's best interest without micromanagement from the top. You know how Elders are..."
To Gray's question, Asmundson says, "A man - or wolf -" here his eyes twinkle, "makes his choices, then his choices make him. Siodmak spent eight years in an idyllic existence with loving companions, then two more under my mentorship. Yet, like some kind of opium demon, he bolted from both as soon as he had the power - and not merely to escape suffocation, as some might suppose. He could have painted me, easily, and contacted me, but he didn't. He blocked my attempts to reach him. He went back to his murder and his rape and his cannibalism and his godlessness - unless you count himself as his own god. The philosopher Nero once said, 'a man whose god is himself falls perforce into blasphemy, or narcissim, or both.' Likewise, Blaise Pascal said, "There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of every man which cannot be filled by any created thing.' That is why we have patrons, and angels, and saints."

You know how Elders are..."Unsure why Josh is snapping at her, Gray's temper rises to match his all the same. Her slight figure tenses.
"Thank you for explaining the situation to me, Joshua. I'm sure I would never have figured any of it out by myself. Especially the bit about letter-writing."
She looks directly at Josh, and her eyes have bled to wolf-silver.
"My companions and I have already got blood on our hands during this mission. You seem to have settled for paint so far, so I don't think I'll be taking any lectures on inaction from you.
"In the last few days, I've lost my father and now the man who might be my brother. I'm not in the mood to be patronised, and for your information, I don't know how Elders are, unless you want to count the one who nearly killed me."
"How should I? - I've been in a bloody tower for two hundred years and still would be were it not for Asmundsen, our guest whom you were just now insulting. The reason we are not 'doing what needs to be done' right now is that we were brought here, and took the time to share information with you. So how about you just go to hell?"

Rae is startled by the sudden snapping. She carefully clears her throat and leans forward, imploring. "Gray, please, he didn't mean to insult you or your companions' actions so far; there's no reason to get upset over simple miscommunication. Please, let's not all argue over this. Josh has been gracious enough to allow us all to gather here, in his Shadow, to exchange information we each gathered and to discuss the next course of action. We have plenty of time here. Please, let's not let misplaced words jeaprodize our mission."
Rae looks earnestly between Gray and Josh, and then over to Roland and Heldrik for any help. Only one thing about Gray's outburst really bothers her. 'Her brother? I thought Landon was Flora's son? Or does she mean something else? That must be it.'

Why is she apologising for him...? Still, I like Raevyn. I thought we might be friends. I don't want her to be upset.
"Fine, "says Gray levelly. "We have shared our information with you. Did you need to tell us anything else besides whose son Siodmak is?"
Besides the thing it might just have been useful to know before we went off after him?
"Or shall we get on with the 'simple' task of deciding what to do next?"

As Gray’s voice picks up volume and angst Heldrik quickly becomes distracted from picking out some boots, although socks are already on his somewhat stinky feet. Standing with a pink bunny slipper in one hand he motions to the room at large with it and says,
“I think perhaps my group should all get some rest. I know for my part the trauma of the last few days has been a bit taxing. We are all dealing with mostly new people under stressful circumstances and I for one would like to keep friction at a minimum at least for the time being.”
With that Heldrik notices that he has been pointing at everybody with a pink fluffy bunny slipper and cracks a smile and points with his other hand at it and laughs. Then he hands the slipper back to the servant helping him, when any other laughter comes to an end, if there is any.
“If everybody can agree in principle, then I would like to talk to Josh, as this is his shadow, and Roland, as the leader of this group, for a few moments in the hall.”
Heldrik says this with a nod to the two of them and uses Gray’s hand to help balance himself while he picks up the pair of boots that did fit him. She knows from the examination of his foot that he doesn’t need her help, but nobody else does. Heldrik squeezes her hand and looks her in the eyes with amusement before letting it go and heading into the hall.
[assuming that Roland and Josh will join him in the hall, with the door closed]
Heldrik is leaning against the wall when the two join him and is putting on his second boot and stamps his foot down to make sure the fit works.
“Thanks for helping me out here. I have been defaulted to as leader of the second group by the others. I really hate doing things without orders and I am all to familiar with both what you term as micro-management and the lack of front line intelligence from the field when making command decisions. If nothing else Flora needs to know that her son is missing in action and as the acting officer in charge that is my duty, unfortunately.”
“Josh is your shadow barred from entry or exit by Pattern?”
[if no]
“I will take a short leave of absence to report to Amber and return as soon as possible. If the time difference is not to great it will hopefully only be a few hours or a day. Is there a place that you would like me to pop into on my return?”
[if yes then Heldrik asks him to turn it off and then says the above]
“Roland, I would ask that you take care of my weary band of adventurers while I am gone. Arrotel is a good guy, if a little on the innocent side, but Katarzyna can see to him most likely. Gray, as you can tell, is full of spirit and comes from a different culture than most of the rest of us. Asmondson is a mortal, per se, but I have suspicions that he is not, which I can not prove currently. Do not separate the three of them if you can help it.”
Heldrik seems to pause looking between the two of them to see if they have any questions or concerns with his plan as stated.

Josh chimes in here, "Yes, we have trumps for everyone that didn't have some, if the owners will give them up." He flicks an almost-wink in someone's direction - hard to tell whose. "I also need to have umm, Agraynel and Heldrik do a sitting for a while, preferably for both me and Raevyn, when we can, to get some Trumps of you two."
Almost as if on queue, Kat slips something to one of her Orphans, murmuring something to him. The three Orphans who had been accompanying Landon's group then take their leave from the room. Once their gone, Kat informs the others, "I've sent them to regroup with the other two and to rest. I trust nobody is against that." She smiles and goes quiet, letting everyone else speak in turn as they do.
When Heldrik takes his leave, Kat moves over to Gray. "Here Cousin, should you need me for anything." Kat gifts Gray with a Trump. No need to mention that it would have been Landon's. I still need to give Heldrik one as well. Should I give Arrotel one? Given he is my 'brother', I suppose I must.
Kat repeats the Trump giving process with Arrotel. "And for you as well. We still have much to catch up on. Perhaps after you have rested? For the moment, we really do not need to rush anything just yet."

Raevyn relaxes a little as the tense situation passes. Once Roland, Josh, and Heldrik go out into the hallway, she follows Kat's lead and hands out a few Trumps as well, of herself, to Gray and Arrotel. She'll also see that they receive copies of Landon, and that Gray gets one of the Trumps of Arrotel, showing them to him as well. If he wants one of himself, and there are enough, it shouldn't be a problem.
She gives Gray a friendly smile. "We only just discovered that bit of information ourselves; that's why we decided to call your group--we thought you needed to know, since Siodmak was one of your objectives. I hope it is useful, whatever happens. Here's a Trump of myself, if you need it. And since Josh does have time moving at such a quick pace here currently, one of us can see about making a few Trumps for you, if there's time and if you'd like."
To Arrotel, she also offers a smile and a Trump. "We haven't really been introduced yet. I'm Raevyn, Gerard's daughter. It's nice to finally meet you; I've seen Trumps Josh has made, and heard a little about you, but it's not really the same, is it? Kat's been looking forward to meeting you, as well."
When Kat suggests going out for a walk, Rae glances over at her. "Mind if I tag along? We could really chat without all these boys around, at least." The last is said with a bit of a teasing tone.

At this outburst his posture and face relax completely. To those that know Caine at all, this is reminiscent of those times when he became bland and nonreactive, completely internalizing his anger, as a way of retaining the moral high ground. With a clipped precision and a neutral stare at Gray, Josh says, "You are all my guests...but Amberites seem to be the only ones I ever have to remind of that. I am truly disappointed that you have misunderstood my words and intent. I will do my best to ensure it Never. Happens. Again."
At Heldrik's interjection, Josh shifts his attention without changing expression. Following Heldrik into the hall, Josh continues down it, waving the two others into a parlor. As Heldrik talks, he pours himself a drink, gesturing an offer to the others.
To Heldrik's question about the Pattern, he says, "It can be, or not. Generally it is not barred from exit but I keep it always barred to entry from all forces, until I can evaluate them. However, as I keep reminding people, we are on extreme fast-time right now. Four days here are only an hour in Amber. The hours we spend talking are each less than a minute there. Let's work everything out - including letting certain people regain their composure - before anyone needs to run off anywhere. If and when you go and return, any public area is fine. Probably the courtyard is best."

This in itself was unusual, as at the time the Isle's entire membership numbered no more than ten. The message talked of an amazing artifact that one of the members had discovered while spelunking under Mount Snaefells."
"When the chapter was summoned to hear this message, I immediately volunteered to go investigate, along with several of my brothers in the society. We quickly outfitted ourselves with everything we thought we might need, and took ship for the Isle. Upon arrival, we went with Bertrand into the mountain and observed the Maze."
"I was fascinated, of course, and took up residence there, leading the scientific investigation while the Society invested in purchasing appropriate lands, mining rights and so on to ensure its security. The entrance and tunnel was improved and a system of transport installed. This took over a year, during which I made every possible experiment I could devise."

"You're right of course, Raevyn, we are trying to relax." Kat waits quietly as Raevyn changes, giving Gray a chance to speak if she feels the need.
Upon Raevyn's return, Kat gestures down the hallway, "Now to my rooms to collect those spare weapons I set aside for you. I dare say, from there we can head outside and find a nice quiet patch of sand to double as a practice area."
"I will watch, at least at first, if you don't mind? I have some weapons training, but usually fight without."
To Kat: "I am not worrying about Josh. I have apologised for upsetting him, but note that he made no apology of his own for being unthinkingly condescending and offensive. Well enough; so long as we can be civil to one another, I don't much care."
Gray tags along, watching combat practice when it begins, but not keen to join in.

Heldrik nods appropriately taking mental notes as Josh explains.
“Much like the shadow paths one uses to get in or out of Amber proper without shifting, the more use the easier it is to travel. I guess I never really did anything like that where I grew up as I mostly concentrated on escaping. I did learn how to build these though.”
Lets see what you think of this little toybox?
Heldrik throws his cloak over his shoulder to allow for Josh to have a clear view. Reaching towards his belt his hand disappears up to the wrist. Less than a moment later he starts slowly drawing his blade out of thin air. Once it is fully in view he puts in across the arms of a chair and then takes off his belt offering it to Josh. Seeing that he is unsure as to what to do he takes his hand with his own and puts it into the shadow pocket. The cool air and smooth hard sides remind him of a stone vault.
“I call this a deep pocket, a little zone of shadow rolled up like a cigarette. Very convenient for storing things out of sight or to unwieldy or heavy to deal with. This one is built specificly for my sword and reinforced to survive travel.”

Josh nods sagely at Heldrik's display. "Shadow pockets, yes. Not something I've worked with a lot, though I do understand the principles. Quite useful in certain ways, I can see. I thought about making one for Lester, instead of a bag, but he'd never forgive me. Now if I could make it super-slow-time as well...that might work, I could pop him in and he'd be back out in no time. Hmmm..." This seems to set him to thinking, for a couple of minutes. His eyes drift to the blade laid across the chair-backs and he seems to react slightly. Surprise? Maybe...
"Let's go down to the salle and see if we can't find a scabbard for that, okay?" He stands up and makes for the door. Assuming Heldrick follows, they will go down to the fencing salle and find a suitable, if plain, temporary replacement. "I can get a craftsman working on a custom job if we have the time for him to come and take measurements. Until then, this will have to do."

Getting our report straight, too, for when we make it, I think. This is also a good time to decide our next moves, maybe with better coordination than we've shown so far, and more backup plans." Once she has a feel for her cousin's main strengths and weaknesses, she begins the instruction. Rather than waste time on the ins and outs of technique, she concentrates on ways in which to optimise Rae's stronger points and minimise the flaws. She also explains it to Raevyn and also Gray as she bears witness to the whole encounter.
"If we get more time and opportunity to continue this instruction, I'll refine it and we can really improve your skill if that's your wish, Raevyn. In the meantime, however, best to ensure you're more than capable of defending yourself should we find ourselves in battle of sorts."

Heldrik, of course, follows Josh back to the studio noting the lay of the buildings. Having been privy to the underpinning architecture of pyramids, castles, and defensive works he has an eye for the strategic as well as tactical detail that might have gone into the making of this buildings.
"No, I was not gifted any trumps other than Landon's, which I unfortunately do not have the opportunity to return."
Heldrik motions with his left hand concerning a sitting for a real trump.
"As you might have been able to guess, I am not familiar with these trumps. Accepting Roland's call was an exception as Gray and Arrotel were close enough by for me to pull in and we had agreed to exactly such should any of us get a call. I do not intend to accept any calls I might get until I am far more familiar with this version of magic."
...and learn how to easily block or cancel any call before I can become entrapped by it. That and I must walk the Pattern again before things get to far along.
"While I would not forcibly stop you, I request that you and the others not create such for me as of yet. The reasons for this are manifold. In a more peaceful time perhaps, I would be more willing."

There is no particular attention given in this house to defensibility. It is not a castle, it is just a big manor house, set on a cliff, with a rather ordinary wall about eight feet in height enclosing a courtyard.
Josh hands Heldrik one of his, and says, "Roland, Katarzyn and Raevyn should have their own, I suggest you ask for them. Arrotel, too. I won't make any of you right now, if you wish, but if I have to, I can make a functional sketch. I think that their usefulness far outweigh the risks. If your friends do not have trumps of you, then probably, only your enemies will soon have trumps of you, if you get my meaning. All that will happen is, that one of us will have to take the time to sketch you, should the need arise, which may well prove dangerous." He pauses, as if thnking, for a moment.
"Let me point out some basic safety precautions for accepting trump calls. First, have your friends nearby, They can lend you physical or psychic support if you seem to be in trouble. Second, have your blade out, and in your hand. If the contact resolves, there is a physical as well as a psychic congruity. If something attacks you, swing the blade at it, that will probably at least disrupt an attack. Third, bring up a Pattern defense before you accept the call. If you do these things, you should be in a very good position to defend yourself."

After his comments thanks Josh and says,
“At some point, with a wooden sword or some such, I would like to practice this physical component you speak about. "True, it is difficult to both block a contact and bring up the Patern. However, if you block the first attempt, and it becomes invasive, you have indication it is hostile - probably." Here he looks a bit sheepish. "Unless it's your friends and they really really want to talk to you, haha. "But if they try and then wait an try again, you can bring up the Pattern defense and wait for the next attempt The physical component, as I said, is simple. When there is a congruity of minds, with Trump, there is an automatic congruity of the physical. Why do you think Flora keeps hand grenades? "I will do so, but only because I do not believe you are any threat to her. I must warn you, sir, that if I am mistaken, I will do my utmost to defend her." Assuming Roland's reaction is satisfactory, he continues, "Let us retire to that lovely studio we were in before."
In the studio, Asmundson sets up the materials quickly, selecting a small canvasboard of the type he seems to favor. His strokes are slow and ponderous, with a deliberation and style that seems to indicate he is not a natural painter. At a guess, it wil probably take him several hours to create this painting by the methods he is using. He seems to be deep in concentration.
Raevyn, even outside and away from the chateau, can feel the Trump energies being worked with - strange, because of the large distance involved.
Josh also senses the energies, and breaks off convrsation abruptly with Heldrik. "That's odd..." he says, and, motioning for Heldrik to come with him, bolts down the hall for the studio, where he skids to a stop at the open door. Asmundson's technique varies only so much as one would expect from Trump artist to Trump artist. The energies he is using are different from Pattern, but are laid down in the same basic ways.
Josh is watching intently as well, and when Arrotel begins to speak, Josh steps quickly to lay a hand on his elbow, putting his finger to his lips. As Josh moves off Heldrik starts mentally comparing the trump energies to the two Mazes, Broken Pattern, and regular Pattern he has experienced. Narrowing things down by basic signature energies it becomes obvious that Pattern is completely structured. Broken Pattern has a rudimentary flaw, which does not seem to be present. While there is some flows that are not structured it does not gyrate like the power of chaos. This, this is something new or perhaps far older than the other powers.
This is based on Maze I think, although that is an interesting term. Perhaps is should be called Wave instead. It does change here and there, but in essence it is a structured beast. Lines like a crest, but moving like a trough close to the bottom where you can see the sand beneath.

In English, addressed to Asmundson, "Have you by any chance ever made the acquaintance of a person by the name of Dunstan? He has been known to use a power similar to the maze, and we were wondering if he was a member of your order."

Gray's lips twitch in what might be an approving smile - certainly the glance she gives Arrotel is a warm one.
In a small, polite, meek voice, she says:
"I see little point us gathering in a group if some people wish to speak to one another in whispers. Quite apart from being very rude, it's annoying and rather pointless. Roland, Josh - are there some of us you would prefer to leave the room while you have your conversation? I certainly have no objection to doing so if you desire privacy."

Raevyn looks like she wants to speak up, but bites her lip and sits back, watching everyone over the rim of her tea cup, hoping another arguement doesn't break out.
'Arrotel is impetuous and impatient; I think they were trying to be tactful. Asmundson may be called a guest, but we still don't know who's side he's on and what he's planning, or what he's capable of. We have to plan and think before jumping into anything; my brother's dead, Siodmak and Elress have vanished, and now Landon's been taken. If we're not cautious, what could happen to the rest of us?'

Gray seems to have extremely sharp hearing.
"It's quite all right to speak Thari in front of our guest, gentlemen, " she says, rather hastily, with a smile for Asmundsen. "He has been picking it up fast since our lessons began. Though I'm afraid I may have passed on a slightly old-fashioned accent."
I'm being rude again. but they need to know they are not speaking as privately as they believe. I wonder why they don't count informing Benedict as informing Amber...
With effort Roland manages not to display much visible reaction other than an appreciative nod to Gray, and a polite smile to Asmundson. Oh hell....I hope he missed most of it, two days is not much time to pick up a new language. Good thinking Gray.
Arrotel:"You talk and talk, but little ever gets done. I'll ask."
Inwardly Roland seethes. Fool....I'll need to have a talk with him.

Gray pours herself a fresh cup of tea, and perches on the arm of Heldrik's chair, waiting with polite interest for a response to her offer to leave the room.
To Heldrik, she say: "I do see now why Random split he and Landon up. Two teams, same management style...."

Assuming that Gray isn't really worried about being overheard--especially after her arguement against such things--Rae looks over at her and Heldrik, sighing.
'Gray at least has shown displeasure with Landon's leadership style, the way he handled things; did he hve orders, like Josh did, to only say so much, at certain times, or was he being cagey? Who knows...But I hope Roland's not going to get too upset about this; we don't need this...' She carefully sets the teacup down and waits and listens.

Asmundson, while not seeming the intriguer, has a well-developed sense of discretion. "I can see that you all have much to discuss, and I am the outsider. No, no, my dear, don't protest, it is nothing, I really am the outsider. I am happy to answer questions, including yours, Sir Arrotel, but please, take a moment to compose yourselves, finish your discussions, and agree on a tack. I think I shall take a walk around this lovely place, some fresh air would do me well, I believe." With that, Asmundson collects his walking-stick and hat, and strides purposefully out the door. He doesn't seem angry in the least.
Josh blows out some air, after he leaves, and says, "Well, shall we hammer this out? It seems that whenever we get more than two Amberites in a room we start squabbling. I, for one, am prepared right now to not get upset, no matter what is said."

Roland bows to Asmundson as he rises and leaves.
"Thank you for the understanding Sir. Perhaps you know how it is with large familys."
Once he has gone Roland looks around the room for a moment, dearly hoping that someone else will start. This is just so damned ridiculous...how has the family not been destroyed by now if this is what it's like whenever we get together?

"I will make the same undertaking you do...if what is said is said openly, between us all. Speaking of 'all'...should someone not fetch Kat?"
She looks directly at Roland, not challengingly, just giving him her full attention as she speaks.
"You should know that we-" she indicates herself Arrotel and Heldrik "have already been treated to information rationing, 'divide and rule', hidden agenda and irritation when we 'messed up' personal plans we were not informed of in advance, by Landon. It was necessary to make it clear to him that we would not accept that as a way of working. I cannot speak for my companions, but I say here and now that I will not accept it from you, Roland, or your group either. Leaving aside questions of courtesy, I consider it an inefficient use of resources, and faintly ridiculous.
"Also, though we are your guests, Josh, and you, Roland, are your pack's leader, we are not yours to dispose of as you wish. I followed Landon; now I follow Heldrik. Perhaps you might consider treating us - or at least our leader - as equals? Whether or not you believe it to be true, it might...smooth ruffled feathers..." a mischievous glance at Arrotel accompanies the last "and quiet raised hackles."

"It is unfortunate that your group began without a consensus on how to be lead. That is all between you and Landon, wherever he is. I have no intention of doling out information like currency from a miser. And I have no intention of subjecting you to a hidden agenda. I appreciate that you wouldn't like it if I did, but I would suggest that perhaps you're letting your experience with Landon color your perception of me. I do not believe I have ever indicated that any of you are mine to dispose of as I wish, nor have I treated you as anything less than equals."
"On the other hand, it seems that you Agraynel, and you Arrotel, each went out of your way to undermine my efforts at tact in front of a guest who is an unknown quantity, involved in and devoted to powers beyond our knowledge. At a time when one cousin is dead and another is possibly abducted, each involving Trump magic...I am troubled by the risk you expose us all to in what seems a fit of irritability or impatience."

"To be fair, Asmundsen was not the only one you two were discussing. I call it impolite to discuss Katarzyna and Raevyn and Heldrik thus, when two are in the same room and all unable to respond. But most of all, I call it impolite - and ill-advised - to make such a show of secrecy and division. This is your home, and you could speak privately to Roland - or any - with great ease - yet you and Roland chose to put your secrecy on display for the rest of us.
"As for getting things out in the open - we, I believe, have done that already. We have told you what we have done, what we have learned, and how that was done. Forgive me, but you have told us very little indeed. Are there other things we are to be allowed to know from your side after all? If so, I ask - where and how did you all learn of Siodmak's parentage? If from Benedict, I cannot fathom why he would not also have told us...therefore, I think, it must have been in some other way."

Perhaps you would have preferred I stay silent, and you remained unaware of Asmundsen's knowledge of Thari? My offer to leave was prompted by a reluctance to sit here eavesdropping - and also by the knowledge that if I were to leave I could certainly get Asmundsen to accompany me, and thus, out of your way.
"You have not troubled to talk to either myself, or Arrotel, Roland - and so you are acting in some perhaps unnecessary ways. It is not necessary to risk offending Asmundsen, or alerting him, to learn more about the Nightmare ... I had already come close to gaining a promise of a meeting. So, who is exposing whom to what risk...and who says you get to decide what risks we take? And why do you think it might not be useful for Asmundsen to believe some of us are more 'on his side' than others? Are you the only one allowed to be 'tactful'?
"It is offensive to state, but itis also a fact, that we have so far been taking all the risks. Or so it seems to me. That is not criticism - but you wish us now to 'do things your way' - I do not see why we should. You have less direct experience than we, yet you appear to act on the assumption that you must know best. Hmmmm, cherie...?"

She watches, noting the change in Gray's voice, in the way she stands, even her speech pattern has shifted. When she begins to play with Heldrik's hair, Raevyn's gaze shifts to him, questioning and confused by this sudden alteration in Gray's actions and manner, hoping he maybe has some understanding of what's going on. She finds the whole conversation uncomfortable, and this new development disconcerting.
'At least they're trying to discuss rationally; the real reason, I think, we were split up--our different upbringings and understandings of how things work, our very natures, all clash, with cousins taking offense for everything said or done they disagree with. Looking at Gray by her reflection in his tea cup Heldrik notes her beginning to change. Instead of reaching out to her with a hand or saying something low to perhaps pull her back he commits himself to be calm, collected and let his beta do her work.
Whether you know it or not Gray you are unbalancing this group and putting it back together again. I do not know if you really take offense or if you are pulling some kind of brilliant display. All in all you have some how bullied a supposed solid warrior into telling the entire group exactly how he operates and pulling expressions from the rest all in a fashion where nobody would seem to challenge you. Perhaps it is just that this is a new pack and you want to assert that ours is dominant and thus that your chosen alpha and yourself as beta are also dominant. Either way, my wolf in sheep’s clothing, you are outdoing yourself and I am well pleased.
[Heldrik takes a lot of mental notes]
Heldrik finish’s his tea as Gray toys with his hair hiding his surprise and the smile of affection well. With the look that Roland gives him Heldrik knows that it is time for his game of silence to be over.
“It is obvious that we all come from different backgrounds, we can all agree on that I think. With that in mind I would like to thank all of ye for having an open mind about what has been said. I know that we can all work together for the greater good of our home, Amber, even if we differ on how best to go about it. Having the means to communicate is very valuable as is the ability to get to Amber quickly and safely.”
With the last Heldrik nods to Josh and Raevyn with a smile for each. He continues with a twinkle of amusement in his eyes,
“Ye have heard the story we have been through and I am sure that Lady Katarzyna is even now confirming it with those she sent with us. What we must do is decide what to do next, yes, which requires for all of us to be here. I leave it up to the rest of ye as to if we should bring in Lady Katarzyna now and move forward or if we should adjourn till the morrow? Either way after that discussion I will find it necessary to communicate with Princess Flora concerning the disappearance of her son.”
With that Heldrik scoots forward out from under Gray’s fingers, at least for a few moments, and pours himself another cup of tea so he can observe everybody including Gray once again.

'Let's get this wrapped up quickly so we can all be on our respective ways; I'd like to speak more with Arrotel, and Gray, and Heldrik--but in a smaller grouping, and in a less tense setting and situation. I think I'll take a walk after this, maybe head down to the beach to clear my head...I have to wonder if Landon was really as bad as she's making him out to be; perhaps like Josh, he had orders...Nevermind that, Rae, not like you could know or do anything about it...'

Would it be best to talk to her tonight, tomorrow after things are more settled. Will it disturb her more earlier or later. What happens if she decides that she really wants to be my Holly? She seems to have the ability to become anything she chooses or her mood leads her to. Is the French persona consolatory or flattering, both?
Heldrik stands and turns to Gray, "Perhaps Mr. Challenger can be retrieved and show to his rooms? I will come by and talk with ye after I have made arrangements with Sir Roland." This done with a smile and a wink that the others can not see.
[assuming that Gray does go and find Asmundson with no further barbs being shared]

If you do not mind I would appreciate the two of us talking to her so that no one person is left with the responsibility of sharing with the entire group what orders, news, or revelations might be given to us. If you wish, we can do that now or we can wait tomorrow morning."

"Please, Asmundson is my first name, which you may freely use. The family name is Challenger, which is quite well-known in some circles, and sometimes," and here his eyes twinkle, "respected. Poe the adventurer, I mean, though yes, he did write about his exploits. I can assure you that, well, most of what he wrote is true, with perhaps some embellishment I suppose. Still, he seemed an honest and robust chap when I met him. I suspect that in other 'shadows," he might be just a writer."
"I do hope you won't think too poorly about our family; I'm beginning to think it natural for our kind to bristle at each other whenever there's the slightest chance of disagreement." She sighs. "I just hope we can get along long enough to complete our mission.
"Yes, the Great Dichotomy, order within chaos, chaos within order. Not that surprising, really.
"But enough of that; I'd like to hear a bit more about your view on things, sir, if you don't mind? Your way of doing Trump is very different from my own; an aspect of your Maze, I'd guess? It seems...Almost like what Siodmak did, and I believe you mentioned being acquainted with him?"
"I don't know how different it might be, never having seen your methods, so I will take your word for it. They seem to have similar results. I am but an acolyte, and have much to learn. Yes, I am aquainted with Siodmak, as I may have mentioned, I tried to turn him from evil, at my lady Nightmare's request. He is more powerful than I am, for certain, which was one reason it is such a tragedy. He must be stopped, and sooner rather than later, I would counsel. He must either have all his power stripped from him and be exiled, or be destroyed if necessary."

When Agraynel checks on him, she finds Arrotel on the roof with a handful of small sticks beside him. Telloth is nowhere in sight, and Arrotel throws a stick in a high arc. As the stick begins to come down, there is a small rainbow and a silver flash. The stick never hits the ground;Telloth makes a crazy attempt at straightening himself, and narrowly misses the same. Arrotel calls out as he sees Agraynel.
"We were just practicing our 'break my neck maneuver'. He can destroy the stick very effectivly every time now, but we're still working on leveling out before he would hit the ground, were I not on the roof."
Gray applauds, with a grin. "Show me again!"
*Bravo, Telloth!*
She watches for a while, studying and envying the clear bond of trust and friendship Arrotel and Telloth share. I miss you, Killian, firstfriend...
"You know," she says a little more seriously to Arrotel, "You and Telloth made all the difference for us in Flagstaff. I'm sorry I never got round to thanking you either of you."
She sighs, restive, watching Telltoh enjoy the freedom of the air.
"I hope we can get out of here soon, don't you?"

Heldrik accepts the trump and when Josh and Roland are done speaking he starts pushing for contact with Flora.
[assuming she answers and yes summary mode would be nice]
“Greetings Aunt Flora. We have good news and bad news.”
Heldrik will tell her whichever she wants first, but either way: her son is MIA and the detailed summarization that he told everybody else concerning their adventures so far.
Heldrik keeps himself well composed, calm, and soldier like while giving his report. He waits patiently while Roland speaks or makes add ons.

When it is his turn Roland adds what little information he has.
"The only thing I have to add is recent intelligence on Siodmak. According to a manuscript Josh found somehow he is Benedict's son by Lintra. If I have my chronology right that makes him Merlin's great grand uncle. I could be off there plus or minus a "great." Benedict has confirmed the story, but Random seems to want to keep a tight rein on who knows....This puts Siodmak in an interesting light, as well as Dunstan. Siodmak I'm pretty sure is ignorant of his heritage, but I could be way off there. Dunstan would seem to know something. Now, why he called Siodmak brother is up for some debate. Could be "brother" in that Jasra was a member of Lintra's house...or perhaps something more. I don't know." He then falls silent, and waits for Flora's response to Landon's dissapearance and the other news.

Flora comes on the line with a "Hey, hey hey, who's hammering in my head?" The contact is dark, and there is a faint smell of perfume and...sweat? "Just a second!"
A moment later, Flora stands before them in a silk nightgown, apparently in her sitting room. Breathe, boys...
Taking all the information in like a sponge, she thanks them for their report. "I knew about Siodmak from Benedict and Random, and I agree with your judgments. He needs to be investigated, captured if possible for questioning, and Elress brought back to be examined for coercion or brainwashing. Try to avoid killing him but that's an acceptable outcome, since he is all but proven to be both an enemy of Amber and part of what looks to be an emerging, competing Power. This Maze is high priority for information as well. If it turns out to be inimical to Amber, bring back this Asmundson fellow to be grilled. Until then, let him lead you as far as he will. I don't have to tell you to try to get back Landon if you have any leads on him, and I will be kicking over some rocks and calling in favors to do that as well: this just got personal for me, and someone is going to pay if he is harmed." Her expression at the end is quite fierce. They shudder to be on the receiving end of that mother cat's fury.
That's all she will say, and will close the contact, unless the two make further inquiries.

Raevyn kicks some sand with her now-bared feet, her boots swinging in her hands. "Pardon my confusion on your name, and thank you.
"I think Siodmak's stonger than myself in some regards, as well; we all combined our minds to Trump away from the Keep at one point. His mind was strong, and furious in its attack against the barriers. My first impressions of him were...Well, it seemed he purposely tried to be as distasteful as possible. He also tried, along with my brother, to attack Dunstan. I just don't understand, I guess, if he had the chance to be at peace and happy, why he didn't take it?" Raevyn shakes her head. "Do you have any idea why your Nightmare asked you to try and help Siodmak in particular? How open and close to her followers is your patron, if I may ask? If I've overstepped my bounds, please excuse me." She asks, genuinely curious.

Telloth flaps off into the sky, regaining altitude for another try. This one happens almost perfectly, Telloth managing to splinter the stick with great force, but still leveling out in time to end up even with the roof. Arrotel makes an interesting sound, as close as a human can get to speaking in raptor. If Gray can understand, she hears something along the lines of good job, more literally translated as "dead rabbit." It's a strange language.
Arrotel hops down from the roof, landing lightly on the ground beside Gray.
"Oh, it was nothing. Just felt that I had the best method to deal with the situation without hurting anyone, so I did. And yes, getting out of here is what I'm hoping for. Roland makes me uncomfortable, and I suspect the reverse is true. Leaving Heldrik Roland makes his way back to the study for another viewing of Asmundson's painting. There Katarzyna finds him pacing silently, hands clasped behind his back, Smoke hanging comfortably at his side.
I hope Heldrik doesn't leave us...I don't want to be responsible for these people...Agraynel, either she plays the family game as much as Landon, or she's insane...I'd put money on both. Arrotel, young, impetuous, cowardly...seems nice enough for all that, but when blood has been spilled there's just no damned time for such people, his arrogance could get people killed...footsteps....Kat...Good....All the same, should any of those three be running around without supervision? Heldrik is stout, experienced, but limited in scope...She's here now...
Roland turns and smiles at Kat, letting the fatigue show just a bit.
"Hello again cousin. I fear you've missed a bit of...conversation."

Kat fixes Roland with a quizzical look, "I have? You look tired, Roland." Having found him pacing, she figures he could use some respite. "Why don't you sit down and let me pour you a drink. You can fill me in over a brandy."
She then scours the study looking for any hidden or obvious cache of spirits and liquers. If found, she pours two drinks, one for herself and one for Roland before joining him and sitting down. If not, she produces a small golden flask and offers that to Roland instead with the explanation, "I always carry my own just in case."
Once comfortable, she smiles warmly at her cousin. "Fire away, I'm not going anywhere." What have I missed to wear him down so? I hope it's quickly rectified what ever it is.

Roland accepts the drink gladly leading Kat to a corner of the study where they won't be disturbed, and at the least, will hear anyone coming well in advance.
"I spoke with Asmundson shortly after you left. He agreed to paint a Trump of the Nightmare he is so devoted to. His god, basicaly. Afterwards, Josh asked me a question quietly in Thari while the others were talking accross the room. I replied, quietly enough. Agraynel overheard and said something nice and loud to let me know that Asmundson has picked up a bit of Thari. A fair and useful warning. So far so good. She went on to harangue Josh and myself for rudeness, Arrotel joined in on her side, effectively telling Asmundson what we'd been talking about. Whether and how to ask if he knows Dunstan at all, Josh's idea. Good one too. He does know something, but he left before telling us anything....He seemed unperturbed by the whole thing. Religious fanatics are like that sometimes. Agraynel and I argued briefly, with everyone present and listening. I pointed out that she'd just sided with an unknown quantity against a member of her family in time of crisis....etc. etc." He pauses and takes a drink.
"She just kept changing the subject. Changed attitude, and I think eyecolor as well eventualy. In the end she tried to play it off as though it was all just a game and she was only playing a role...either way she strikes me as a liability, an unstable untrustworthy liability." He scoffs slightly. "Arrotel for his part said nothing and fled once the discussion was over. I don't think he likes confrontation." A wry grin.
"...After that Heldrik and I briefed Flora. No news there, she'll be looking for Landon...I'm half tempted to leave, now, for the Keep. To speak with Dunstan and then this Nightmare...New powers are afoot, working through Trump. Amber has been attacked, through Trump, and these..." Deep breath. "These people don't seem to realize that we have in our midst an agent of the new power. The notion that there could be a relationship between the two needs to be acknowledged damnit!" Calm down boy...calm down...
He breathes out at last, and falls silent.

It's a lot to process but Kat sits quietly, sipping at the contents of her glass as Roland gives his account of what she has missed. "I'm disappointed that any of us could argue in front of a stronger who could potentially be an enemy. It shows that we're divided and that could be used to another's advantage." She smiles at this, "But then when hasn't our family been divided in part?"
She sets down her glass and studies Roland, This is weighing on him heavily and not fairly.
"Don't think I blame you for there having been an argument, I just think it unfortunate and as for Agraynel's ways... " Kat shrugs, "We are in the same boat, not knowing what drives her to do what she does. Just as we are growing closer along with Raevyn and Josh, our group coming together, I suspect their group has too. So perhaps if we wanted some insight into Gray, we should speak to one of the others. However, the liability there is we could set them offside as well. I don't think it's important, I'd rather keep our two groups separated regardless."
She lifts her glass and samples the brandy again, "If you want my advice Roland, I suggest we leave for the Keep now. Asmundson could know something of Dunstan and the Keep, but I'm willing to risk proceeding without that knowledge. We've already discovered during the course of our journey that there is much we don't know and that will only be uncovered when someone else deems it time for such. Landon is their problem, not ours. They lost him, they can find him or leave his discovery to Florimel, I don't particularly care."
She smiles again, "If that makes me sound cold, so be it, but I have nothing invested in him nor he in me. In regards to the Nightmare and Maze, that is not our concern. We cannot lose sight of the danger that the Keep also presents and those linked to it. It's possible both Dunstan and Rinaldo are mad, and who can speak for Jasra's sanity? We need to stick to our prime directive here and find out what we can, including the possibility of one day securing that Keep for Amber if it exists. I also don't wish to lose sight of the fact that our cousin and Raevyn's brother was murdered. There's still a killer out there who might not be connected to any of this."
Finally she stops and cradles her glass gently, giving Roland time to ponder and respond.

"Yes...It would be nice to go now. But I want at least a few words with Asmundson. He has the honesty that goes with supreme confidence that your diety has your back...Also, this is Josh's home, we can't just leave the other team here while we're gone. Thirdly, I want to take that painting with me...I don't know if that's politicaly feasible."
"I don't think you cold at all Kat, entirely reasonable would be more like it...We could speak to the others over breakfast, perhaps make some inroads on mending fences...I think I told them we'd do as much. After breakfast, we send them on their way, and then we leave. Do you think that would work?"

Kat is quick to nod, "I think it will work. If it does not, it will not be from lack of trying on your part. Whether or not we will be successful in acquiring the painting is another matter. Then again, who's to say it matters politically? Is Asmundson's world entreated with Amber? Certainly, it could be seen as an antagonstic move if we were to secure that painting via ill means, but he is one man all the same."
A frown appears, "Though depending on what game the others play, by attaining that painting we could set them against us if they harbor him completely as an ally. What prevents us from now seeking him out and speaking with him privately, just you and I? The others do not have to be privvy to our conversation with the man. Also what's to prevent us from securing him into Amber's dungeons for a more thorough questioning pertaining to the power of the Maze and his deity? I don't think that is necessary or warranted, but it is not something we should forget about as a possibility."

What would I do without you Kat? The thought is displayed rather plainly on Roland's face.
"Nothing to prevent us from talking to him whenever we like, though I still think Raevyn or Josh...probably Raevyn, might make better progress. She's so honest, whereas with me." A shrug. "Well, I'd be a bit nervous if I came asking me too many questions...No, I don't think the dungeons will be needed, nor, I hope, warranted...One never knows though." The unspoken extra, that he wouldn't hesitate to throw Asmundson in a dungeon and question him vigorously if need be, is quite clear.
"I think taking the painting without asking would certainly set the others further against us. Heldrik might understand, the others would not. They have taken Asmundson as one of their own it seems. Their pack as Agraynel would put it...We shall ask though, and see where that gets us." He knocks back the last of this drink, savoring the rich flavor.

Taking a moment, she finishes the last of her drink and then sets down her glass. "We shall see how we fare come the morning and if nothing else, we will at least determine how strongly aligned to Amber the others are. I wonder how secure Asmundson's position in their pack truly is."
Smiling, she rises to her feet, "I told you I would support you Roland, and all that you have done has added weight to that decision. You may not be the greatest general nor I the greatest soldier, but I believe in loyalty and will always stand true. So shall we retire for the evening or go speak with Raevyn and Josh, advising them of our desire to acquire the painting?"

Raevyn is walking down along the beach, still talking to Asmundson; Kat won't find her in her room.
Rae thinks for a moment, then looks at Asmundson. "As poorly timed as Arrotel's question was given the circumstances, I am curious about the answer; do you know of Dunstan, or Jasra, or anything about the Keep of the Four Worlds? A widely traveled and knowledgeable gentleman like yourself, I wouldn't be surprised if you had at least heard some kind of rumors or legends? Dunstan seemed to know a great deal about those of us he brought to the Keep, including Siodmak. It could all be unrelated, or any connections hidden, I know, but it does seem a reasonable line of inquiry, given all that's happened, and my group's task."

Asmundson walks slowly along next to Raevyn. "I do not know of this Dunstan, though the Keep of the Four Worlds is said to be where Nightmare resides, and to contain the Primal Maze. From what I gather, you had a bad experience there. I do not know how to reconcile these two facts, if such they be. I can think of several possibilities, however. One, that this Keep and that Keep are not the same, but are related, just like the late John Asmundson and myself. I have gathered that many shadows contain similarities; what my friend Herbert Wells called 'parallel universes' or 'multiple dimensions'. Another possibility is that my knowledge is wrong about the keep. A third possibility is that Nightmare was not there any more, having left for some reason, either temporarily or permanently. Is Dunstan an Initiate of the Maze? Does he serve Nightmare?" He pauses a moment. "If you wish, I do believe we could obtain help from the finest detective in my shadow, who happens to be my brother."

"I don't know about Dunstan's sources; the Keep has a power of its own, and I'm not sure if it's the same as your Maze or not, having no direct experience with it like my cousins have had. Perhaps it is all just differences between Shadows, mixed with rumors, hearsay, and legend; rather difficult to determine otherwise for now. And with all respect, sir, I don't think some of my cousins would care much for the idea of mixing your brother up in this as well. Too many cooks, for one thing; we all ready have more than enough. First though we need to see the others on their way. I think Heldrik can get them moving quickly enough...Before they go though, I want that painting with us, not that I'm sure how to get it. It's only after she's said it does she realize that perhaps she shouldn't have, that maybe Heldrik's team was keeping it from him...But by this point, Asmundson has likely heard enough that it really isn't going to matter much.

Ahh, in a way, I would say I trust him a lot - to act exactly as he thinks is right. Anticipating him should be easier than not, I would think. And I do think taking it from him will make him our enemy forever, so you'd better think hard about that one. Kat goes from Raevyn's empty room back to the study and locates something to write with and on. She jots down a little note: Raevyn, I was looking for you. Will be in my room. Kat.
She slips the note under Raevyn's door and then heads off to her own room. I suppose I could just use Raevyn's Trump, but she might be busy... and I really don't want to be lazy. At least this way I can pack for tomorrow.

Raevyn gratefully accepts Asmundson's arm and walks back to the manor with him, asking a few friendly, interested questions about his home Shadow, his Order, the Maze, and his Artistry. The topic of art does get considerable attention, from mundanity like prefered paints, brushes, and styles, to the more esoteric qualities of Trump (which may lead to talk about the storybook paintings and Landon finding Gray). After saying good evening, she swings by the kitchen to get something to eat, then heads back to her room, finding Kat's note when she opens the door.
'Ought to see what she needs...' Rae exits again, goig to Kat's door and knocking. "Kat?"
[Mainly looking to get from Asmundson a summary of what was covered before in other threads about those topics, and maybe a little new info, if possible, though not too likely]

The door opens a second or two after Raevyn knocks. "Ah Raevyn, you got my note? Good. Come in, please come in." Kat steps to the side to allow Raevyn into her room.
"Just wanted to fill you in on a conversation between myself and Roland. We're hoping and planning to leave for the Keep first thing in the morning and for the most part concentrate on our original directive and thus plan. Roland's talking to Josh now, as it would be rude of us to leave the others here in Josh's home with our departure, so we're going to prod them along if necessary."
Kat plonks down on the edge of her bed and continues, "Roland would also like to secure the painting that Asmundson did and that the best tack to take would be to ask the man. However, after careful and considerate deliberation," she grins here to indicate such was not the true case, "We decided it would be best if you perhaps asked the man. Roland feels as if you're better suited to such and believes he and Josh may have actually offended the man. There's also of course the matter of how secure he is with the other group, which doesn't really sit well with Roland or myself, considering he and his deity are unknown quantities at this time, but that's their problem not ours. Roland also doesn't want to offend the other group either, so we're really going to strive to be diplomatic with them during breakfast."

Raevyn sits on a chair and chews on a nail, listening. "Diplomacy? Little late for that. I think everyone's bound and determined to not get along. I find it sad that people are so quick to take offense at the way something is perceived to have been said, or assume that everyone else is playing at some game most of us barely understand." She stops, looks away, and takes a deep breath. "I'm sorry; I shouldn't rant, not to you, anyway."
Rae leans back in her chair. "I talked a bit with Asmundson; we just parted company. He's not a bad guy; a real gentleman. I don't think it will be difficult to ask for the painting, for study, but he will be concerned about any intentions toward his patron. We spoke a little about Dunstan, and the Keep; he claims to have never heard of Dunstan, but...He said the Primal Maze was at the Keep he knew of, as well as Nightmare. But who knows if it's the same place? Or if Nightmare isn't somehow one of the people there, like Jasra? What if the Primal Maze is the Fount?
"You know my reservations about going to the Keep; my Father ordered me not to unless necessary, and to call him the minute we left for it. I don't like this...And what about Landon? Are we just to leave him to the other group or those back in Amber to worry about? It feels like there's too much going on, at the same time, not enough leads on which direction we are to go, or if it's even all connected. I guess I'm just...frustrated. We were thrown into this, without all of the information available, and unable to work together at all. That's the real reason we were split up, I believe...No, I won't rant...Sorry..."
Raevyn sighs. "We probably should leave, before we do damage to Josh's home. I'll talk to Asmundson, if you and Roland think it best. I will have to call my father in the morning as well--unless I am somehow made unable to do so, of course." She smiles, apologetically. "Anything else? I'm sorry; it feels like it's been a long day."

I do believe that we are forming cabals, just as the elders do when given a difficult situation. We trust only those within our circles, and separate ourselves. Of course we still try to act nice in front of each other, but how long before the others decide we're messing things up and take things into their own hands? We truly are the sons and daughters of our parents- they've taught us the art of mistrust well.
"Well, dinner should be served soon, if I'm any judge of time. Shall we go?"

"You're right of course, it does seem a little late for diplomacy but I cannot know exactly what passed between you all when I was not there. I only know what has passed between us all previously, going back as far as our first general congregation back in Amber. It's all right, Raevyn, use me as a sounding board if you so like, unless you don't feel inclined to rant to me." Kat teases Raevyn with a smile, "You may have someone else you prefer ranting to... say Josh perhaps?"
Quickly switching topics lest she embarrass her cousin, Kat comments on Asmundson, "I haven't really talked to the man at all, in fact I don't even think I've gone as far as to introduce myself. However, given what you've just told me, I think if you were to request the painting from him, he might acquiese. If in your possession, then that secures its protection from any other member of our group. I don't think any of us would be so inclined to insult or offend you by dishonoring an agreement between you and he. I would like to look further into the possible connection between the Maze and the Keep. Jasra is from the Courts, correct? Meaning she could take on forms, yes? Perhaps she's seeking initiates into the Keep in order to secure her position there against all others, including ... her sons."
Kat stands and moves to the door, opening it for Raevyn, "I've no inclination to stretch this day any longer for you, Raevyn. I think you should advise your father about our intentions and journey to the Keep. If nothing else it will reassure him to know that you are keeping him informed of such things and should ill befall any of us, at least the Elders will have a starting point. I wouldn't worry too much about Landon, Roland informed me that Florimel is seeing to it at once. Let the mother hen worry about her chicks, Raevyn. I am not overly fond of how we came to be about this entire business or how we've been all going about it, but at the moment it does seem to be what we have. It lets us concentrate on something and sometimes that's important to have some sense of focus even if it only serves as a distraction from whatever else is transpiring around or within us."
Kat offers a faint shrug of her shoulders, "You know, there's no reason why you can't pull out of this investigation with Josh and pursue other avenues leaving Roland and I to visit the Keep alone. I've sworn my oath and in doing so will obey the King's request rather close to the letter, as I'm indebted to him more than you perhaps. Roland and I are of somewhat different ilk than yourself and Josh, so I don't see it necessary for us four to remain together to focus on one lead. We have one another's Trumps and I know I have a trick or two up my sleeve yet as would Roland at a guess, so we will not be trapped without a Trump artist along for the ride. I could assign two of men to you and Josh for assistance, two to Heldrik's group and the fifth could accompany myself and Roland. Anyway it's late, think on it Raevyn, it is possible to do. The four of us can discuss it in the morning before breakfast if we have a need. I think I'm going to go discuss it with Roland now actually."

Raevyn blinks; it takes her a moment to get what Kat was implying with her teasing; then she colors a little. 'We're just friends, we share an Art; but Kat does like to tease, and she doesn't really mean anything by it.'
Raevyn listens, nodding one several points. "We're still not sure if it's the same Keep Asmundson's heard tales of, but it's a thought. As for different lines of investigation, I'm not sure where else to turn at this point, though looking into Nightmare may be a way; it seems relevant somehow. I'll leave it up to Roland if we split or remain together, when we talk tomorrow. I'll talk to Asmundson after breakfast, and I'll talk to Dad after our plans are cemented, if necessary." She stands and crosses to the door, hugging Kat quickly. "Thank you, and good night, cousin."

Closing the door behind her, Kat makes her way to Roland's room. Walking along, she begins humming a little tune to herself reflecting a much happier mood than she's been in for a while.

G. Wells, - even his own version of London, England seems to contain fictional people like Sherlock Holmes and Professor George Edward Challenger...

Before sleeping, Raevyn makes a list of the places and people Asmundson mentioned, and tries to match them up with some of the stories she's read; having lived near enough to Amber that she had a decent amount of access to the library, she's likely read more than a few of the more popular and well-known authors, or at least has heard enough in studies to be familiar. She frowns, and wonders if it's significant, or just an aspect of the Shadow regions the man is from. She finally goes to sleep, reminding herself to bring it up in the morning.
About a half hour after dawn breaks (Rae's a late sleeper compared to several of her cousins, it seems), Raevyn wakes up, washes, and dresses in a gray blouse, dark brown riding pants, and low boots. She pulls her long blk hair into a ponytail, and heads down to the dining room, singing softly a tune she once heard during one of her rare forays into Shadow. If Agraynel is still there, she greets her cousin with a smile.
"Good morning, Gray." She looks closely. "Did you not sleep well? You look tired." She says as she gets herself some breakfast.

"If we should have the chance for me to sit for ye - you - again, I should be glad of it."
Gray hesitates, then continues:
"Raevyn, do not be dismayed that others turn you around in the field of combat. That is a small thing. You have Gift beyond my understanding. Value it - value your own strength...I am sorry, I am not saying this well..and it is probably not for me to say at all.

Or you will find a way to conquer it yourself. I think--I know--you still have strength, and can use it." She smiles sheepishly, and pulls back her hand.
"Now I am the one who thinks they may be overstepping their bounds. I do appreciate your kind words, by the way. As for Roand...He's a good guy, Gray, really, and he didn't mean to offend you, your group, or your guest. He was trying to think of everyone's security, and was merely consulting our host first--who's also a good person; Josh and I have spent quite a bit of time, talking and working together.
"There shouldn't be much to apologize for, really. Roland isn't one to hold a grudge over a misunderstanding. I think many of the disagreements have come from our disparate upbringings, and I'm sure others have realized it as well. These smaller groups are a good way to slowly learn of each other, get used to each others idiosyncracies."
Rae smiles again. "I'm sorry, I don't mean to preach, if I am beginning to. You could try apologizing to him yourself, if he comes in for breakfast. I think they were thinking of one last meeting before we go off to do what we need to. It will be a busy morning, followed by a great deal of activity for all, I think."

Heldrik gives a short bow to Roland after he has indicated the practice blades. He changes the grip of his blade so that it is turned sideways from normal presenting the flat of the blade. He then strikes a classic Giacomo Di Grassi high ward stance.
"No need for practice blades, just strike with the flat and keep the lunges short. Besides, the girls need to get get used to the clash of steel, I fear they will encounter it sooner than later." The last is said with a wink at Roland as Heldrik obviously means to make some noise before breakfast.
[as agreed by Shutter]
The ringing of blades can be heard through the tranquility of the morning. At first the clangs come sporadically as the two test themselves against each other. Its less than a minute before the tempo increases and the practice has started in earnest.
Heldrik moves into a style similar to a Spanish Rapier technique. However, his reach and blade length keep Roland more easily at bay, it is obviously more about defense and counter strikes meant to draw Roland into the style. In response Roland performs a long then then short series of lunges and faints drawing Heldrik out.
Two minutes later the clash of metal on metal has a regular beat and rhythm as the two combatants have begun to go at each other with purpose. It is not long after when Heldrik strides into an Italian fencing style with many slashes and few thrusting positions. The blades chime as Roland is forced to retreat under the onslaught of blows rain in from almost every direction.
Roland finds that a stop thrust to Heldrik's head nearly takes off an ear if not for his own quick flick of his wrist. The two warriors dance to a tune almost as old as time as each clink and clang of steal rings into the air. Roland notices a bead of sweat roll down Heldrik's neck dripping down his chest and could almost be distracted by it. It seems that Heldrik has decided to stand and fight in some kind of 4 step style where retreating to the rear is not an option, but sliding to the sides or bringing the blades into a bind is a regular occurence.
Roland sees that he has but to keep coming at Heldrik who is obviously beginning to slow and it is a short time before Roland is able to tag him sharply on the arm with the flat of his blade.
"Well done cousin, I hope I was enough of a challenge to provide you a good workout," says Heldrik between gasps of air.

"It would be an honor to stand beside you in battle...But first, I suspect it is nearly time for breakfast. I will see you there." With a bow and any parting words Roland makes his way back to his quarters to change, shower and shave, packing his few belongings back up in his satchel. Hmm...where did that book go? Does Kat or Raevyn have it at this point?
A short while later he arrives at breakfast, looking refreshed, calm, and ready for the day. Walking slowly into the hall Roland selects a seat as centraly located as he can, fairly obviously trying to appear impartial. What were you planning to do with that, exactly? I was really thinking of studying your style and technique more, using that, and the subject itself is of course fascinating--though I don't see a need to get too close yet; wouldn't want to offend one such as her with an unexpected and likely unwelcome call, not without proper instruction and perhaps introduction."

At Raevyn's question, Asmundson looks at Raevyn for a moment, and folds his napkin in front of him. No one has ever seen him look quite like this before, which is somewhat...displeased. "I do not know you very well, miss Raevyn, and would never think of insulting a lady. She starts serving herself breakfast, "Have I missed much in the way of conversation? I truly hope not." Her gaze flickers towards Asmundson, "I do believe I neglected proper introductions yesterday. I'm Katarzyna, Captain of the Avalonian Guard and bodyguard to Roland, Raevyn and Josh." As for contacting Nightmare, I don't believe that's a step we were quite ready to take yet; from what I understand, Roland was more interested in a better idea of what she looked like, with the possibility of contact later, if necessary.
"Your style is similar to Siodmak's, since you taught him, and studying the painting readily available would help me understand his techniques better, in case it became necessary in the near future. I didn't mean to offend." Raevyn's look is one of genuine regret at causing more strain between themselves and Gray's guest.
'I'm terrible at subtlety; I should have just asked flat-out, rather than try to be polite and roundabout, trying not to offend people even more. I don't know how some of the others do it. No wonder we had so many problems yesterday. I wonder if Josh is okay; second time he's been asked that question, second time he's replied with a nasty look. I'll remember not to ask it in the future, unless he's ever willing to explain some time. Hopefully he'll relax again when the extra guests leave; he was starting to get comfortable with our little group.'
"Hi, Kat! How are you this morning?" Rae inquires when Kat steps in. She notes that Kat introduces herself in the manner they agreed to take with Dunstan, as a test; she tries to recall if they said anything in front of Asmunson about her. 'I'm sure we did, but let him mention it; Gray might, and may wonder at it, though. I'll just try to explain that Kat's getting into character for our visit later, and what it's for. Roland came on strong, he is obviously very good with up close weapons. Lets see, he started with this stance here...replied in this manner there...pulled that twist and style change right...here.
Looking down at the ground Heldrik follows the fight by the steps on the ground. Roland's footwork is excellent.
Weakness's and strengths my dear cousin. Your reactions are great, but I wonder at your tactics?
Shortly Heldrik heads back to the manner and proceeds with the mornings normal activities. He is the last in to breakfast [likely passing Gray and Asmondson on their way to the balcony, giving them a smile]. Once there he piles up his plate with whatever is available.
"I take it we should discuss our plans this morning. You guys are taking off to the Keep and we're looking for Landon and Siodmak," he says before shoveling in a mouthful of food.

Maybe it's her idea of humour...I always was bad at seeing the funny side of things....she can't expect to fool Asmundsen, not after greeting Arrotel with that 'well met, brother' in front of him yesterday...can't wait to be away from here and actually doing something again....

Your style is similar to Siodmak's, since you taught him, and studying the painting readily available would help me understand his techniques better, in case it became necessary in the near future.
Fixing her with a level gaze, Asmundson says to Raevyn, "The only thing similar between Siodmak and my art is that he a certifiable mad genius, and I a rote copyist. He far outstrips me in talent. My contribution was to be in the realm of morality and ethics, of which all the worlds show often a dearth. I taught him school techniques, things a wildling like him would have found no other way. I now wish I hadn't, but there is only one Deity that is perfect in predicting the future, and Siodmak has stumped us both. No one can turn another from evil if he does not wish it." With that, and a short bow, he takes his leave, hoping for Gray on his arm.

Once outside, she sighs. "I must apologise for my Family. I hoped for better from them. I would not willingly have exposed you to discourtesy after you have stood our good friend, Asmundsen."
Looking out from the balcony at the sunrise over the villages and town below, Asmundson replies, "I consider it less discourtesy than dis-ease - in the classical etymology, I mean. Lack of ease, lack of self-knowledge. Your family seems to have great difficulty trusting even in the smallest things, and conducts interpersonal politics reflexively, by Machiavellian rules. Here I am, completely in your power, surrounded by sorcerers, artists of the Trump, lycanthropes" - a wink here - "even men who could divide me into three with their magical swords before I could raise a hand - and yet somehow, I get the feeling I am played for a merry fool." Turning fully to Gray, he says, "It is simply not necessary. Before I became a sorcerer, I was a scientist, and before that even, a gentleman, and will remain so, even were my power and intellect stripped from me."
A pause, and a turn to profile. "On the subject of gentility, I have also seen how you and sir Heldrik look at each other. I have no wish to interfere. I have no regrets to dream my dreams, so you should feel no trepidation on my behalf. I would be honored to remain your friend, no matter what passes in future. I trust that is suitably clear?"

Agraynel:When Roland enters, she pours another cup of coffee and walks over to offer it to him.
"Peace offering?" she asks, softly, her nervousness apparent in the slight shaking of the hands holding out the cup.
Roland smiles a thank you and accepts the cup of coffee, steadying it in her hand. "Accepted Lady Agraynel. There will be public, open talk this morning, before we all leave. If things between you and me remain unsettled after, we can talk again in private?"
A few moments later, as he begins to sip his coffee his heart sinks as Raevyn attempts be subtle and sly. Oooookay. We won't be having her be sneaky again...Well, at least not everything has gone wrong this morning, the madness seems to have left Agraynel for now.

Josh watches this whole exchange without comment, until Asmundson is gone. He gazes unfocused at a point on the wall, and says, "Well...the best-laid plans of Raevyns and men gang aft a-gley..." There is no malice in his gentle remark, and he reaches out absentmindedly to rub Raevyn's shoulder, then jerks his hand away after a moment, as he suddenly realizes what he has done.
"Sorry." He turns bright red and stares at his plate. "Long night," he says lamely, and eats doggedly to hide his eyes from others'.

Before I became a sorcerer, I was a scientist, and before that even, a gentleman, and will remain so, even were my power and intellect stripped from me."
"They are the fools, not you. They must miss so much that is worthwhile, meeting the world with such misgiving. By seeing the worst in people, and showing it, they must oftentimes bring out the worst, don't you think?"
Gray's expression becomes faraway. "When my....illness...first came on me, it was just such a thing - I could no longer see what was true and good in anyone, even the ones I loved most. It was as if the world became full of shadows...and each shadow full of danger. Even my father and mother, on the blackest days, even them..."
Unconsciously, her grip on Asmundsen's arm has tightened painfully. Realising this, she unclenches her fingers, with a small apologetic smile.
"I don't think I shall ever be free of those shadows. But I recognise them for what they are - madness, what you so truly called dis-ease - and I fight them, when I can. To see others choosing that worldview freely...I find it hard to accept."
Gray shakes herself back to the present, and looks at Asmundsen very seriously. "I told Roland before we brought you here that you were under our protection. I thought that would be enough, by Family 'rules', to guarantee you reasonable treatment. I was wrong, and I'm so sorry. But I want you to know that I meant it - that if any of them should ever try to harm you, I would defend you with all the strength I have...such as it is. My word as a Princess of Amber on it."
Gray blushes.
Then she leans forward to lightly kiss her friend's cheek. "You are a dear," she says, simply. "And your friendship honours and delights me."
A kiss last night, but only a smile in passing this morning...I think I may have made an idiot of myself....but it's too late, far too late...

Beaming, Asmundson seems invigorated. "Capital! And really, sir Roland has treated me quite well, in his way. I am sure no one here has ill intent, but as has been said, all that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good - ah, people - to do nothing! It is easy to slip into bad habits, and I, for one intend to indulge no worse habit than brandy and cigars. In fact," reaching into his pocket, "I believe I have a couple of Emperors here, begging to be smoked. Would you be scandalized if I offered you one?" Whether she does or not, and unless Gray objects, Asmundson will proceed to light the cigar(s) with a small cantrip to create a flame, and chat as long as Gray likes, or until called, or until lunch.

Josh's color returns to normal, and he looks up, meeting Raevyn's eyes for a moment, as if amused at his own behavior. Breaking the contact, he gets up and hands his plate to Colleen, who is replenishing the table, and pours himself some more coffee.
Looking around in some concern, he says, "So, let's have a family meeting - briefing, if you will - in my study, as soon as everyone is ready. True to his word, those in the dining room hear Colleen finishing up in the kitchen and then heading out the back way. An half hour later, the chateau is empty but for the Amberites and Asmundson. Josh asks Arrotel to go let Gray and Asmundson know their presence is desired in the dining room at their earliest convenience, and they eventually come down, smelling faintly of cigar smoke. Any others are soon rounded up, and finally, everyone is gathered in the room, seated or placed wherever they desire. Colleen finishes up around him and he thanks her for the excellent food before heading to the Dinning Room.
Once there he takes a seat where ever his instincts tell him will cause the least amount of trouble once people start sitting next to him or in other places. Heldrik looks to Roland to start this little meeting.

Roland sets down his coffee cup and speaks clearly over the clatter of tableware.
"If you'd all indulge me for a moment..." A pause to see if anyone objects.
"Mr. Challenger, as has no doubt become apparent, we are a family under strain. One of us has been murdered, another abducted. We don't know if there is a link between the two, but we know that Trump was involved in both. An unknown force is acting against our home, against our blood, and we are compelled to defend ourselves."
"This puts me on an awkward footing with regard to new friends. I would like to trust you, and your Patron...But for now, I remain wary of any unknownn quantities. Particularly unknown quantities with access to Trump powers. Surely you can see that this is reasonable. I am lucky, and grateful, that you are being understandiong, and very patient with me in this. Thank you for that Sir. I will ask your indulgence at least once more this morning; my cousins and I need to talk in private of family matters. I had hoped to be quiet about the need to exlude you for now, but my cousins have already let me know that they find such behaviour too rude to stomach so I suppose it's best to be as clear as possible about the matter." His eyes briefly meet Arrotel's and Agraynel's if possible. Is this sufficiently open for you two? Gods I hate these shows...
"After you all have finished dining I would request your presense cousins in Josh's study so that we may lay plans. Mr. Challenger, we will try not to leave you alone and bored for too long." Well that was more awkward than I'd hoped... Roland lifts his cup of coffee and sips, looking around the room at everyone.

Roland turns and stares at Agraynel for a moment, a look of puzzlement on his face. Oh hell...the nice one is gone already.
"Thank you Agraynel, an excellent reminder. From here on, Lady Katarzyna will be going, undercover as it were. Mr. Challenger, you've been with us long enough to know that she is, of course, a member of our family. I would appreciate it if you keep this information strictly to yourself, even to the extent that it not be mentioned aloud once we leave this place. Methods of eavesdropping are many and diverse. To get practice and comfort with the role, she is stepping in to it this morning. Perhaps this explanation is redundant, yet it seemed to me that Lady Agraynel was under the mistaken impression that we were trying to decieve you, and opted to call us out on it. Thank you for the reminder Lady Agraynel, further public checks will not be needed on this, or any other matter."
I wonder if she has any idea how close she is to getting them both killed or imprisoned?

"Since I can't seem to say anything right, I hope you will take this suggestion as well meant. I'd stick to calling yourself the Captain of the Guard, and not add 'bodyguard to Roland, Raevyn and Josh'. You can't be a bodyguard to more than one person. She gets to her feet, and looks apologetically at Heldrik. "It seems better if I absent myself from the Family discussion. I'm sure you can give me the edited highlights after we leave. I'm going to see if Telloth wants some company. Just come up to the roof and yell when you want us back."

So far, it seems the two of you have done nothing but offend each other, and it leads to other 'aligned' cousins disagreeing as well." She looks over everyone else in the room, and shakes her head. "I would have liked to have enjoyed this brief time getting to meet each other, away from the politics of Amber, but it seems we brought them with us. It's sad I'm almost looking forward to us being on our seperate ways again.
"Start without me; I'm going to see if she's all right and if she'll come back down. I'll try to come back for some of it, at least."
Raevyn gets up, and unless anyone tries to stop her, follows Gray out, taking a few deep breaths. 'Really shouldn't be so angry, but I'm so sick of everyone meaning one thing, and everyone else taking it in the worst way possible; we're supposed to be a family, for heaven's sake...The Shadowdwellers have it far better in some regards, I think...'

This is simple. You guys go do something with the Keep and either invite us or don’t. If you do then we devise a plan for open entry or concealed entry, if we are not going to just observe. Frag it all, Gray could shift to look like a soldier and get in easy, attached to her could be the entire team in a shadow pocket waiting to be set loose on the unsuspecting. We will most likely be going off by ourselves and doing a fruitless search for the two of them because they keep moving around. Which means I am left with two options: Walk the Pattern and have it take me to Landon or search for endless days through the Pattern Lens. Neither of which is pleasant.

“Lets get down to business. Roland, do you want the three of us along for the ride to the Keep? If not, then we will pursue Landon first, most likely by using the Pattern to transport one of us to him and extracate him if needs be or find out what is going on. If per chance that you wish our assistance in your mission to the Keep then deciding the best approach is of primary concern of course, stealth or open. Lets get down to the meat of the matter and move along before anything distracts us.”

Though the road to Hell is paved with good intentions, at the risk of irony, I trust your good intentions in this regard. Despite Agraynel's own, ahem, good intentions, I do not feel ill-treated nor maligned. Family is family, after all. Landon is the only one I knew well, in a strange sense, and I feel responsible for him since he was abducted in the very presence of the Maze. I have accepted everyone's word that our time here represents a very short span outside this shadow, but I must tell you, I very much wish to be off. I need to go back to my Maze, and use its power if I can to locate Landon. If that is insufficient, I shall paint another Trump of Nightmare and enquire of her myself. The worst she will do is tell me I have erred in my inquiry, I believe."
"I think the best thing for me to do is depart this place, with no ill feelings or regrets, back to my home, to begin my work. I suggest one of the other Artists here prepare a Trump of me to contact me when you are ready, or by any other method to reach my home. By your leave," he turns to Josh and bows, "I shall depart.
