Background
Towards the centre of Odajaaa, just outside the central mercantile district, are the longhouses of the most prominent, important families. These are the rich traders, the mighty warriors and those who have found favour with the Czar. One of these great, richly ornamented buildings is the clan-stead of Beorn Godwinson, close companion to the Czar K'jaan Emberholt, and one of the most influential men in Jedaart.
Like all Aart patriarchs, Beorn presides over a large family of sons and daughters, slaves, servants, bondsmen and thralls. As is traditional, his eldest son, Niall Godwinson prepares to inherit his father's fortune and influence, while the rest of the family's male offspring must make their own way in life.
In a less well-connected family, the younger siblings of the inheritor would find themselves tasks about the home, spending their days as vassals, first of their father, then of their elder sibling; performing tasks too menial to merit the attention of the lord of the house, but too important to be entrusted to a servant. For the sons of Beorn Godwinson, and other such royally favoured houses, there is another option however; to enter into the service of the Czar.
Harald Godwinson, the sixth of Beorn's ten sons, chose this path.
Harald undertook his rite of passage at sixteen, like all Aart men, traveling into the wilds and hunting to survive. Young men are not encouraged to speak of their experiences during this time and so no-one knows quite what Harald encountered in the wild. On his return, however, he was clad in an expansive and roughly fashioned coat of wolf fur that stretched from his shoulders to the ground. A tall, broad man even at that age, those who saw him marveled at the size of the beast that first wore the pelt, but Harald would say nothing of it, simply commenting that there had been a disagreement over ownership of a snared Reindeer, and by the grace of the ancestors, his claim had prevailed.
On returning to the embrace of his family, as a man and no longer a boy, Harald was soon accompanying his father and elder brothers as, at the behest of the Czar, they took to their Longships to launch raids on the scattered Orc tribes that roamed the south coast. Harald, knowing that his chance to earn fame and wealth lay in being noticed from an early age, took care to make a reputation for himself as a capable soldier who followed orders diligently, yet could fight with all the fury of a berserker when required. Wearing Niall's old armour, the tail of his wolf-pelt fixed to the crest of his helmet, Harald was a distinctive figure on the battle-field. He wielded one of his father's old longswords, the blade so long and heavy that until he grew used to it's weight, he had to wield it with two hands.
It was two years before Harald achieved the recognition he sought. By now, he was known among his father's landsmen as Ulv-Hale, meaning Wolf tail. After accompanying an expedition led by none other than the captain of the Czar's bodyguard, Harald was approached by the old man and his father and asked if he would swear fealty to the Czar and become a Jarl.
Now twenty, Harald has been a Jarl for two years and has earned the trust and respect of his fellows. The Jarls are chosen from among the best warriors of the noble families, swearing a solemn oath to their Czar never to desert the field of battle, to defend his life with theirs and to obey his command in all things. Since becoming a Jarl, Harald has seen less action and suspects that his skills have been blunted somewhat. Although his new role brings prestige to himself and his family, Harald is beginning to chafe at the enforced inactivity.
Description.
Harald is a tall man, easily topping six feet, with the broad shoulders that come from regular and intense weapons practice. Like most Aart men, he has thick, shoulder-length blonde hair, but unlike his fellows, who keep their beards long and full, Harald keeps his trimmed short.
Although not clever in the ways of scrolls and scribes, Harald is no fool. His speech is gruff, though not impolite, heavy with the accents of the North. His appearance is imposing enough to hamper his interaction with non-Aart, and he lacks the duplicity to do well by flattery of honeyed words.
Harald is garbed as befits the Jarl of a Czar; a well tailored, durable shirt and breeches of red cloth (very expensive among the Aart) over a leather under-shirt, a scale-mail long-coat, surmounted by finely ornamented and articulated inter-linked iron plates guarding his shoulders and upper arms, trimmed with copper. He wears stout leather boots, with finely wrought iron greaves, leather gauntlets guarded by iron and copper bracers and a full-face helmet of iron and copper, delicately worked in Aart fashion, a mail flap at the back protecting the back of his neck and a wolf-tail plume falling from it's crest. A black cloak, trimmed with gold hangs from his shoulders to the ground, and he carries a large, round shield, also black and trimmed with gold.
His favoured weapon is a Bastard sword; Harald's first weapon was a longsword owned by his father, so big that at first he could only wield it in two hands. With time and practice, Harald learned to wield it in one or both hands with equal ease, and valued the power and flexibility it gave him. Now fully grown, he has had his own sword forged, to his own specifications, by the master armourer of the Royal hall.
