After handing the Trump of Siodmak to Heldrik, Raevyn finds Josh. "Ready for that walk? The crowd seems to be thinning out, and I could use some air."

"Umm, sounds good. We need to ensure privacy? I should be able to arrange it, against anyone but Fi or Bleys I think. Back or front?"

Kat approaches Roland but doesn't interupt anything he may be doing at the time. If he does seem occupied, she'll stand nearby to indicate she's ready whenever he is.

"Privacy? If you think it prudent. Let's try the back gardens; there are some things I didn't get to see the last time." Raevyn will start to go, then look around. "Oh, you may want to collect Lester...Does he always antagonize other people's companions like that?"

Wired*Nun

Josh replies, "Well, that's what happens when you have friends, they don't always do what you want them to. I guess I could have had a dog, but when Dad brought Lester I guess I just...couldn't resist the little booger. Gives me that 'mysterious magician' air too, don't you think? Sometime remind me to tell you his story. And don't worry, he's around here somewhere." He heads out the back, Raevyn in tow.

Kat finds Roland in the hallway between the dining room and his quarters, walking slowly, lost in thought...I need to remind Raevyn that I won't need sketches, I can make my own...would be nice to learn how to make the real thing though...And a way of knowing who is calling up front...but that can all wait, I find myself leader of a squad of detectives...Odd situation...Not one that I'm used to, not with these stakes, not when I'm potentialy outclassed by the opposition...I like my team at least, Heldik has been away from people too long, Landon and I would clash on style but perhaps not on substance...the little feral girl is a complete unknown quantity...This will work well, Raevyn has more strength than than I think she knows...Josh, even if he worries me, has been vouched for by Random, and he clearly has powers I don't know about yet...Katarzyna, we need to test each other at some point, we seem to similar, and as much as I appreciate her offer to have me lead, she seems much more inclined to actualy be the leader...so much to...what's that?

Behind him he hears Kat's shoe brushes ever so soflty on the stone floor. Roland turns and, seeing who it is, smiles in greeting.

"Hello cousin, we have planning to do and things to discuss."

Behind him he hears Kat's shoe brushes ever so soflty on the stone floor. Roland turns and, seeing who it is, smiles in greeting.

"Hello cousin, we have planning to do and things to discuss."Seeing Roland's smile, Kat smiles back, "Indeed we do. Shall we? I believe you have questions for me as well?" The corridor gets a quick up and down look, "So where shall we go, your rooms or mine? Somewhere else perhaps?"

"My rooms are nearby, I had a chessboard sent up earlier, would you care for a game while we plan? We can send for some more food if you're hungry still, I know I am."

"That sounds wonderful. I'd like that. I haven't played a good game of chess for weeks. And yes, I'm still hungry." Kat waits for Roland to lead the way. "Do you ever think we'll see inside all of the rooms in this castle?"

"Given that we get to live more or less forever, barring violent deaths, I'd guess we might...but it will take luck, teamwork, and a long long time." After a few moments of walking (no getting lost this time) they arrive at Roland's quarters. He opens the door and steps inside, after making sure the room is secure, he motions for Kat to join him. Now you're paranoid boy.

Once Roland gives the signal, Kat enters into his rooms and remarks, "I think I like yours better than mine." Knowing it could be a long night, she proceeds to get comfortable and unbuckles her sword belt, "Where may I hang this?" I wonder if I'll get appointed new rooms upon our return? Does Roland have a preference for white or black? Does he prefer to make the first move or see what his opponent chooses to do?

Roland pulls off his swordbelt and lay it accross the bed, accepting Kat's and doing the same with it. He takes out a bottle of red wine, pours two glasses and seats himself at the chessboard.

"Unless you object.." He says, picking up a black pawn and a white pawn. He mixes them up behind his back and extends his hands, the pawns hidden inside. "White goes first." He says with a smile.

After sitting down opposite Roland, Kat reaches across and lightly taps his left hand with her fingertips. With her choice made, she sits back after picking up her glass and sampling the contents. "Been raiding your father's cellar again?" She takes another sip and then arches her eyebrows at her cousin, "Do we want to spice up this game a little or discuss preparations over our moves?"

Roland opens his hand revealing the white pawn. He passes it to Katarzyna and their game begins. Spice it up, what does she have in mind?...

"I would normaly opt for spice, but I admit that this has been a trying day, so let's just let the conversation go where it wants...I don't know yet how we're going to approach Dunstan...He is formidable, but I have a certain amount of trust in him..." He talks slowly, in between moves, letting the wine and the chess percolate through his brain.

Kat takes the pawn and places it upon the board. "Some other time perhaps then but I shall hold you to it." She considers her first move before deciding on a convential one and moving her King's pawn forward one square. [I don't know the official term for that move. I play the game but I forego all that 'stuff' that real players dig. And don't worry, that's probably the only move I will describe.]

With her move out of the way, she glances across the board and shrugs. "From what has been told of him thus far, I think he will be more happy to receive us if we approach kindly as opposed to force. Yes, he may have had something to do with this, but then again, he may not have. We could go under the pretense that we're ready to help him, but we've come to him for a starting point?"

After several moves are exchanged back and forth Roland wins the first game, but it's close.

Good she's open to diplomacy...

He reverses the pieces, taking white this time, and they begin a second game.

"My thoughts were along the same lines. He is young though, and proud, I am somewhat hesitant about the welcome we will receive, the men-at-arms there don't like Amberites, and I hear that Dalt shares that view."

Pygysys
24th of August, 2004, 11:02
"Good game," compliments Kat, "It also sounds as if he's feeling very pressured and in a no-win situation. If he truly wants help, then we've nothing to worry about as far as his men-at-arms are concerned. Dalt? I don't know him."

She waits for Roland's opening move and soon the next game is underway. Again the result is close, only this time reversed as Kat takes Roland's king.

"Good game there." Giving a small smile. Close one, she's good. Has a sharp mind, grasp of strategy...Excellent. They set up the board and play again.

"His relationship with Dalt is tenuous by my measure...Dalt is a son of Oberon, but not very happy about it. Younger than our fathers by a good measure, but a skilled martial man nonetheless."

The games are getting more intense, less chatter, more focus on the play...This third game Roland wins, again by only a close margin.

The fourth game is a hard one, Roland wins again, but he nearly loses twice to a move he hadn't forseen. Damn...very good.

Pygysys
24th of August, 2004, 11:22
"So we should definitely be wary of Dalt then. Do you know how much influence he may have over Dunstan? Will he get involved? What's his angle?" Now this is more challenging than playing As... damn! Kat frowns at something, perhaps losing the game? "Good move."

She turns the board and resets the whites, ready for the next game. Is he better than me? Should I hold back perhaps?

"Thanks."

"I think we're asking the same questions then. Good, like minds will hopefully work well together." Game five begins.

Damnation she's good...Is something bothering her? No, probably just my imagination..although...

"How are you handling everying Kat? You seem to have a lot weighing on you." Ah, too bold young fool...too bold.

And in a short while Roland loses the fifth game. "Nicely done."

When Roland comments on like minds, Kat smiles even though she's lost the fourth game. "I hope so too." Roland's question, innocent enough, causes her to grow quiet and concentrate on the game at hand. Only after she has won the game does she look up again. You should have held back but you let him provoke you into winning... he didn't provoke me, I just don't have time. Not yet, not now, not here.

"I think perhaps I am allowing myself to feel concerned for us all. There's still so much we don't know and the lead we're following up isn't what I would call substantial. It doesn't make sense for Dunstan to be connected to this, unless it's somehow connected to Rinaldo. If Rinaldo is after the Keep, why attack Amber and bring down an even greater enemy upon your head? If it was Dunstan, surely he doesn't believe that we won't discover his part and instead lay the blame upon Rinaldo? If it is neither, who does that leave? Siodmak? Why?" She sighs and drains the wine from her glass.

Kat continues from where she left off, "If it isn't Siodmak, who does that leave? The Courts? Why? Why now? Why Joss? Again I come back to your belief that it was deliberate. Of all that I know of our Uncles and Aunts, why choose Gerard's lost son? Why not his known daughter? Why not the child of Amber's greatest warrior?" She gestures to Roland with a flick of her wrist, "Why not you, Julian's son?" Again she grows quiet but this time the silence is broken quickly. "I did not come to Amber to lose my family and yet I find that the case. Another game?"

"I did not come to Amber to lose my family and yet I find that the case. Another game?""Sure, good one there." She's holding out...there's more in the background, more weighing on her mind...is it enough to cause her to buckle at a critical juncture?...doubtful, but how certain can I be of that?

Roland sets up the board for a sixth game and refills his glass of wine, offering to do the same for Katarzyna. Haven't played chess like this in...damn....how long?...not since Father's last visit I think.

"Where did you learn to play?"

Pygysys
25th of August, 2004, 05:18
"Thank you. You play well." Again the pieces get reset for another game and Kat nods to the refill. "Where?" I'm surprised he didn't ask who taught me. "Back home. Chess was a game played at court and it took time to learn. Fortunately I had many opponents, so I won as much as I lost. You?"

(Raevyn) smiles, then impulsively gives (Josh) a quick hug. "Thanks; this was nice, just chatting. Helped a lot, after all that went on. See you in the morning!"

She then heads off, politely asking the next servant she sees about Gerard's whereabouts.
Josh stands looking up that the reflection in the sky for a few more minutes, then goes back in to the castle. After taking a quick look around, he determines that Roland and Kat are not in public areas, and heads to bed.

The staff tells Raevyn they believe Gerard is the ops room. She finds him there, poring over some sea charts.

"Evening, Rae, just...just working, I suppose. Just..." Here he trails off, throws down his compass and dividers, and stares at the maps on the wall. "Just trying not to think."

LynMars
25th of August, 2004, 06:14
Raeyvn nods, looking around. There are usually refreshments of some kind left nearby; she automatically pours her father a drink and hands it to him, taking one for herself. "I just wanted to see how you were doing. I'm not sure yet when we're leaving; I'd like to get some Trumps done, but Roland and Kat may want to head off right away in the morning. I'm not sure if I want to go back to the Keep, but..." She shrugs, sipping her drink, thinking, suddenly at a loss for anything to say.

Wired*Nun
25th of August, 2004, 06:35
Gerard, uncharacteristically, sips politely at his drink then puts it aside. "I've been doing too much drinking today." Thinking back, she does remember him putting quite a bit away today. He has a reputation as a prodigious drinker when he wants to be, but it never seemed to affect him adversely. "I need to clear my head now, not fog it." He seems to want to talk, but not about Joss...probably keeping his mind off the pain.

"I don't want you 'going to the keep' except as a last resort. That place is a deathtrap, even if Jasra is incapacitated somehow. She might be playing some kind of game herself. I know she is clever. Of course, it may come to that, but you'd better have good reason, and let me and Random know before you do. If there is any justice to be done, I want to have my hands in it."

"I think Random is holding something close and you will get some more instructions or something after you leave. He hasn't even told me, but that's my impression. And, as much as I want you to get going and find Joss' killer, I also want you as well-prepared as possible. I'll be heading to sea tomorrow; if I were you, I would take all the time you need to get ready."

"Where?" I'm surprised he didn't ask who taught me. "Back home. Chess was a game played at court and it took time to learn. Fortunately I had many opponents, so I won as much as I lost. You?"
"Katarzyna, I like you, and I am inclined to trust you, but it sometimes seems as though you play the same games that Landon does, only you do a better job of hiding it. I learned to play chess in Regan. There, a perfectly accurate, perfectly correct answer...Utterly worthless, entirely devoid of content. Father Tibrone taught me, the leader of the Order I grew up with, the man was dear to me, though short lived as shadowdwellers tend to be. He taught me the game and still played with me from time to time even after I'd long passed up his skill with the game. My father, Julian, played with me as well, always beating me soundly." He takes a sip of wine, and looks up from the game, meeting Kat's gaze if possible. "So, there are the two answers you have to choose from. How do you want this relationship, Kat?" His eyes are open, curious, and perhaps a little sad.

LynMars

"I think we will be getting something more when we go; Joshua seems to have something further, but isn't allowed to disclose it until we leave Amber. I'll let the others know of the suggestion to take our time preparing; I think that seems wise. It also gives us more time to know one another before jumping into tense situations. I like them all, but we need to be something more like a team." She sets her own glass down and stands.

"It's been a long day. I think I'll be heading off to bed, and you should try and sleep, too. Your men need you as rested as possible. I promise I'll try to keep in touch, but you know how Shadow can be." She stands on tiptoe to kiss his cheek. "Good night, Dad." Unless Gerard stops her or has anything else to say, Raevyn will head up to her room.

"I have two choices Roland, I can accept you for what you seem and that to me is of noble character and one whom I can trust or perhaps it is an act. Perhaps this is a time when if I'm to let my guard down, then one such as you would be the one to slip beneath it." Taking her glass, Kat swirls the wine within and looks down at it. "You have your father, I can tell you that I am alone in this." Her gaze lifts to meet his, "I am under instruction of the King and Princess Fiona, along with another. If I breach their instructions, then this other's sacrifice has been for naught. I honestly feel compelled to sacrifice a friendship with yourself in the pursuit of noble intentions due to the honor of another. This is not easy for me Roland, as I have been placed into debt not of my making but I will pay the toll." She grows quiet again, troubled by what avenue she will take.

If I confide in him, will he accept the toll as well and honor my debt as if it was his own? I cannot nullify the agreement between Benedict and Random. He has agreed to play the part but not so that I can waste it at the first glimpse of good character. Roland is young, like I, perhaps untested. Can he possibly lighten the burden upon my shoulders? I don't know. I was sent here to learn, to play and possibly one day be able to leave as they did. What if I can't? What if I can't do any of these things?

Softly she says, "Between you and I only, Roland. You know my father, as does the land, but they do not know my mother, Sand." There, it is done. Time will tell if he will betray me or not, and if he does, he betrays more than a cousin. "I grew up in Corrilaine and it is no more, destroyed by my mother upon my departure. All I knew and I mean all, all of it is gone and it was confirmed to me today. That is my game, Roland, to preserve the identity of one and conserve the identity of the other."

The last pieces fall into place and Roland has lost again, despite a rather daring gambit there at the end. "Good game." He says says quietly, thoughts mingling.

She's better than me...Sand...Sand...One of the elders, missing...But then...ah...So much more there...But she's shown trust and courage this far, time to leave her in peace, despite your own curiosity...Someone other than dad beat me...

He looks up again from the board. I hope I read this correctly. Very hard with so much unspoken.

"Thank you Katarzyna...I appreciate that you've just shown me an immense amount of trust, and respect...I will not betray you, and I suspect that there are enough wards around this castle right now that no one else overheard. I can tell there is more to tell, that you are burdened. I will not press you for more, but if you need to talk, to share, I am here." He sets down his wine glass and appears to briefly consider taking her hand, but deciding against it.

"The pain you must feel at the loss of your home is not something I can possibly relate to, or alleviate. You have my sympathy, and my grief for you though...And I will hold true to you."

Pygysys
25th of August, 2004, 11:13
Her voice is strained but Kat says what she needs, "Thank you." For listening, for trusting and above all for not pressing the point. I don't know how much I can't tell you because of where I am at or because I cannot bring myself to acknowledge it all. A breath in, then out and her measure of control has returned completely and the time of confession has passed.

She gestures to the board, "You played a good game and we are very equal in measure. I suspect I would not be able to defeat your father either. Enough with the games though, yes?" We no longer have any need for such, you and I. I hope. "What is your plan for our assignment? How would you like to proceed and what would you like me to do? You still have not asked about my men, but I can tell you this freely, they have trained with me and some have trained me. There are only five in total, not that anyone else knows this. If anyone chooses to believe I have more, that's their perogative. These five men though, they are bound to me and it will always be so." That is something I will only tell you and again it is part of this larger game for neither of us knows how they are bound. Nor can you possibly understand the true meaning of it.

Roland bows slightly to the thanks. Thanks to you too Kat.

"No, enough of games for now." Enough defeat for one day. "I haven't asked about your men yet, I thought things between us needed discussion first...Five men you say? How many did you send with the others? Beyond martial skill, do they have particular abilities that one might not expect? Do they have a means of contacting you, a Trump?" Let the matter of binding go for now. "I can tell that you trust them, so need not ask about that...The dilemma that I find myself in is this: Random has ordered us to look into Dunstan. I agreed to look into Rinaldo for Dunstan...Amber comes first, and I warned Dunstan rather clearly that I am not inclined to be used for evil ends. Still though, I feel that we should look at Rinaldo as a path to looking at Dunstan, and I do not know that the King will like that." A pained look flashes accross Roland's face.

"But Rinaldo killed my uncle, our uncle, Josh's father...That is a hard thing to forgive. I don't know that we are the right people to investigate him fairly...I'm still puzzled on why the hell he was let free in the first place...But my father agreed to it, and so I must as well it would seem...Damn...My mouth is running off with me, it's been a long time since I had someone to talk to, someone to trust, an equal..." He shakes his head, snapping out of the mood. He reaches into a nightstand and produces a large leatherbound book which he hands to Katarzyna.

"Here, it's the story of the Patternfall war and the years shortly after, told from the point of view of our uncle Corwin...I wonder where he is, things got so busy I didn't ask...Interesting if perhaps biased reading. From what I can tell though it all rings true. Dunstan gave it to me, I thought you might like to read it while we prepare. I haven't decided when to leave yet, I have more questions to ask, research to do. Probably within three days, perhaps much sooner."

"Another thing we need to know, or at least need to remember we would like to know is this: Why are the elders sending us on this task? It seems an important question to me."

Pygysys
25th of August, 2004, 16:00
"I sent three men with the others, leaving two to ride with us. Darius is the leader of the five and he rides with Landon's group. I was hoping to give them one of those Trump sketches perhaps and instruct them in the use of it. I'm not a Trump artist myself so I cannot make one. If Raevyn would be so inclined, it would make things a lot easier and also allow them to stay in contact with me, so if we feel the need, we can check in on the others. I know that is hardly sporting of me, but I don't believe Landon will keep us abreast of developments." She smiles, "However, I will defer to your judgement in this. If you don't wish me to use my men in that manner during this mission of ours, then I won't. They are not sorcerors or of the blood, they are simply well trained, disciplined and dedicated to the cause that is mine."

A slight pause, another sip of the wine and then she asks, "Who is Rinaldo exactly? He was never mentioned to me prior to my arrival in Amber. I know he is Dunstan's brother and that he is the King of Kashfa, and that he killed Caine. Aside from this, I don't quite understand where he slots into place."

She takes the book and flicks through it. "Now I have two books to read but this one shall take priority. I don't suppose you know of a language called English per chance? Apparently it holds the key to a riddle my uncle set me once but I have not travelled far nor know where this language can be found. Perhaps you might? And as for your own question concerning our task, I am not sure. There could be any number of reasons but unless we know motives as well, we cannot cement any guess with accuracy and truth. We are also not aware of what else has been transpiring in regards to Amber, politics and the elders. I think we would be better off concentrating on the task at hand and keeping the question of why in the back of our minds, lest it contaminate our reasoning."

"I don't have any problem with you keeping in touch with your men. As I read it the other group was mildly offended at their presense anyway, they might welcome the notion that you could call them away at any moment."

"What I know of Rinaldo is almost entirely from that book, therefore it is incomplete and biased...In the morning I will begin an attack on the library, drawing out whatever information I can find, when that fails I will begin talking to servants, guards, whomever...At the very least I should be as knowledgable as a commoner on the matter within a few days."

"English? Yes, I know English rather well. The language originates on shadow Earth, the shadow where Corwin spent his centuries lost, and where Merlin and Rinaldo began their game. As shadows go it has a good deal of weight to it, we Amberites have spent a good deal of time their, adding to it's reality. I worked there as a chef for a couple of years, chef, and trainer in a few styles of swordsmanship. An interesting place. What is the riddle, and who posed it?"

Pygysys

The book draws Kat's attention again and she traces her fingers over the cover. "Well then, I think I shall read this first thing in the morning and be done with it. What else would you like for me to do whilst you undertake your attack on the library? If you find a dictionary of the language in your attack, could you pass it along to me? It is not an important riddle, simply a private one set me by my uncle Delwin. He would often do such and this one I have not yet had the time to solve. If you were not aware, he is of the Blood but as with my mother, his identity is not known and will stay that way." I know you understand what I mean about that. Just as Sand will never be mentioned, neither will he. However, I know you will know that I refer to him should I speak of my uncle again.

Kat smiles, "You still haven't set me a task. Come, what can I do to be of use?"

"If I find a dictionary I will certainly send it to you." No need to offer to help her with it again, not when she's already declined to tell you the riddle. "The book is easy reading, but still 1200 pages takes time to work through. When you're done with it I was going to pass it along to Raevyn, and then perhaps to Josh, maybe the others as well. It's one account of the family game, and I suspect we're all in that game now."

"Before we go there are a few things I'd like you to do. First and foremost, take care of whatever you deem appropriate if I seem to have neglected it. Meet Josh, get an opinion of him, that's something I need to do as well. Get arms and armour for yourself and your men, I plan to live off the land if we head out into shadow as much as possible. I'll be asking around with the Elders, trying to learn what I can about Rinaldo, I suggest you do the same, we can split up the list perhaps, saving time and avoiding annoying them any more than need be...I don't want to deal with the possibility that one of them might be behind this yet. While it is possible, I don't see a damned thing we could do to discover it, or do anything about it at this stage, so I'm going to let it go for now." Roland looks around the room for a moment, as though searching for what to say next. He turns back to Kat with an exhausted smile.

"Not much in the way of specific directives I know, but that's just how it is."

Pygysys
26th of August, 2004, 05:24
"I'll be certain to pass it along to the others once I have finished with it. When I leave here, I will see to my men first and advise them of what's to come, along with getting them properly equipped. Given that the others aren't too pleased with their presence, it's best not to upset them further by causing them any possible delay. Of course it all depends on whether or not Arrotel joins them." Kat's lips quirk upwards into a strange kind of smile, "Tis strange to have a brother one does not know."

"I think after I have seen to my men, I will retire for the evening and then seek out Josh in the morning, possibly speak with him over breakfast. If you wish to split the list, then which Elders do you wish to speak to? I'll take those that you do not have the time for. If any of them are indeed behind this I shudder to think what could transpire." And why would they kill Gerard's long lost son? I'd still like to know why he was the target.

"They may not be specific Roland, but we do not have much to go on. For all we know this is some wild goose chase, but it is what we've been assigned. So we shall do what we must and we shall do it well. Even if we discover nothing because that is all that can be discovered, then we have accomplished our aim. I am not expecting to find Joss's killer or the mastermind behind the scheme. I am hoping to find out if our piece fits this puzzle or another entirely. She smiles and takes Roland's hand, "You too, Roland. Good night." Before leaving, she swings past his bed to pick up her sword.

Leaving Roland's rooms, she heads straight to her own where she finds the Orphans. "Very well, we'll go there now and prepare. First though, we must stop in on my cousin Raevyn, I have need of her assistance in a matter." With the two in tow, she makes her way through the castle to Raevyn's suite. Along the way, she is quick to stop a servant and ask for directions. I hope she's there and not asleep, I'd hate to wake her. I know how much I could use the rest and she would need it more I imagine. If I could leave it till morning I would, but best I find out about a possible sketch now and hand it over to Darius first thing.

Ah good, I didn't wake her at least. Provided of course Raevyn lets Kat inside, the two men-at-arms will wait outside in the hall. Kat sounds very apologetic for disturbing her cousin's preparations for bed, "I know the hour is late and I wish I didn't have to disturb you at this time, but I have come to find out the possibility of attaining a 'sketch' of myself from you? I would like for my men to be able to keep in touch with me should they be separated from Landon's group at any point. Do you think you could aid me in this?"

Once Kat leaves Roland pours himself another glass of wine and sits down to draw. First hemakes a Trump sketch of Dusntan, briefly toys with the idea of contacting him and then sets it aside. Next he Sketches Katarzyna, taking his time to get it just right. Sitting back to look at his work he rubs his eyes, relaxing from the effort. He pulls out his Trumps, adding some sketches and begins casting a fortune. Gah, I can't believe I'm doing this...not a lot else to do, and my brain needs something to work with.

When he is done he sits back and sighs in a mixture of frustration and humor. What'd you expect? You have less than half a deck...Time to round that out...yes...in the morning...

"I would be happy to if it would help you," Raevyn replies, "but sketches lose their power once taken from the place in which they are made, so I doubt a sketch would be of use for what you describe. Joshua and I will be doing up some full Trumps tomorrow...perhaps we could pass some through to Landon's group once they are done?"

"That would be even better, thank you. I'll be able to pass it to Heldrik and he in turn can pass it through to my men. We have not often been separated on different missions, having usually operated together that until now I have not even thought of utilising Trumps for contact between us." Near enough to the truth. I know they can find me and I them, but at some point I will need to explore the connection between us.

Kat turns to leave but pauses in the doorway, "If Roland has not yet made you aware, it seems we shall be leaving in three days. He wants to spend the time preparing and researching, ensuring we are ready and know one another before setting out." Becoming aware that she still carries the book Roland gave to her, she holds it aloft to show Raevyn, "After I have finished this, I will pass it along to you. It is that book that Dunstan gave them to read at the Keep. Now I shall bid you good night and trust you will be able to rest without further interuption. Again Raevyn, should there be anything I can do, please do not hesitate to call upon me." No need to make a fool of myself reiterating my condolences. All of us have lost this day, we all mourn regardless of the fraction and depth.

Raevyn nods, then she seems to remember something. "Kat, didn't Random say something about Rinaldo visiting Amber soon? If that's the case, then maybe we should find out more about this visit, and if we can hold off until he gets here, talk to him directly..." She frowns. "Or maybe that wouldn't be the best idea. I don't know what some among our group may do if face to face with him--including myself. Still, it's something we should bring up to Roland. And you do realize that when I say 'pass the trumps to Landon's group', it's because they're apparently leaving tonight? To try to find the trail quickly or to obfuscate themselves from spies, I'm not sure. I'm sure they'll be fine, but thought maybe you should know they're all ready gone, likely."

She then smiles. "And thank you, Kat, for that offer. You've been a good friend all ready. Good night."

If we need a neutral party to speak with Rinaldo, then I'm the most likely I suppose. I have never met Rinaldo and likewise I never did meet Caine."

"Well I best be off then and try to catch my men before they leave if I'm able, otherwise they're going to be wondering who this Heldrik fellow is. If you don't see me at breakfast it's because I'm chasing my tail in Shadow somewhere. Sleep well Raevyn, good night." The next morning...

Josh gets up early and knocks on Raevyn's door. "I still want to shower, but though I'd wake you up. I'll have breakfast delivered. We can work in your room, if you don't mind, I think the light is a bit better there. We'll do this in stages, but we need to lock the door when we are working, so as not to be interrupted, and put up the Do Not Disturb sign."

After morning ablutions, he will return to Raevyn's room, eat breakfast, receive supplies he has ordered, and begin the work.

The technique he uses involves first doing a basic nontrump sketch of each trump, very light with pencil, repeated as many times as necessary. The cards are mounted on a backing, and while maintaining the Trump mindset, each color is applied in layers to all cards, essentially creating an assembly line.

The tricky part to this is not allowing too much time before moving on to the next color, for the Trump energy to start to dissipate. There also has to be some planning of color layering to create the proper effects. This means that each of these "assembly line Trumps" is not normally the work of art some Trumps can be, but are quite functional. [See House Rules for the definition of this partial] Josh demonstrates the techniques on a set of 8 trumps of himself, to be given out to team members as needed.

After they all dry, overnight at a minimum, the backings need to be done. While the Unicorn is traditional, and is present on all known Dworkin Trumps, the picture is irrelevant, but the back (and edges) must be sealed with Trump energy to make it a permanent artifact, otherwise the Trump will eventually fade in effect. Some Trump Artists have their own signature backs, while others prefer to use the Unicorn or the Serpent.

This all means that it takes a minimum of 2 says for a "perfect Trump." They can be executed in acrylic or other media for faster drying times; however, some of those have been known to fade at the most awkward times and in some shadows. Completely natural pigments and oils are the best materials to use.

Assuming Kat heads for breakfast in the dining room, she finds Bleys and Fiona eating there, deep in conversation. This breaks off as she comes in to the room, and Fiona gets up from her empty plates and, with a nod to Bleys, heads out.

Bleys looks like he has some more to eat, and waves Kat over after she gets herself a plate. When she approaches, he stands up and seats her with a flourish. Still standing, and looking around to make sure they are not being overheard, he says, "Katarzyna, I don't believe we have directly met, but it is good to meet you." Sitting down, he goes on, "I have been briefed on your situation, and I had to do some cleanup with the repercussions of your home's removal. If anyone is of a mind to care about shadow-dwellers, there were a lot of shadow-people annhilated by that act...pretty callous, don't you think? Oh, I am sorry, I did not mean to speak ill of your mother, but you have to know that it's true. Pretty drastic thing to do just to hide a trail and play 'sink or swim' with your offspring?"

She watches intently, occassionally, when it won't disturb the process, asking about one thing or another, but saving most of her questions for when he's finished with the first set.

"May I suggest that when we move on to the others, if they're available and have enough time, that we have them come in and sit for this? Kat can't help but notice the sudden death of conversation upon her arrival and Fiona's departure soon there after. So much for finding the right time to ask her about the Pattern. Maybe another time or maybe I really should find out who is the best alternative. Not that I really have time to worry about that just yet. And was it Florimel or Fiona in guise again, when I was advised that Fiona would turn me away?

It would be rude of her to ignore Bleys' invitation, so she goes to join him. "Thank you," she says as he plays the gentleman with her chair, "It is good to meet you too, Uncle." His next words have her wondering if she has spoken too soon. I feel you do mean to speak ill of her, Uncle. The question I have to ask myself is why? Are you testing my mettle? Wondering my depth of feeling towards that which is not Amber, removed as it is in Shadow or once was? Perhaps you merely seek to test my nerve, my control of emotion as I am about to set out with cousins of mine you have regard for?

Slowly she sets down her knife and fork, not pleased to have to be facing up to something she's been doing her best to avoid. Looking up, Kat regards Bleys as she considers her answer. "Tell me, Uncle," she keeps her voice soft and low so as to provide difficulty for eavesdroppers should they be about, "Do you really care about my opinion on the matter? Do you care about the loss of life and existance of people you never knew or places you never visited? Or are you more interested in the effect that my apparent abandonment might have? Not only upon myself but on those I am to assist with the task His Majesty set this last night past? If you are simply looking for sport this morning, I suggest you will find more exciting prey in Forest Arden. I only care for one thing this morning and ... " she taps her plate, "... here it is." You've baited the hook, you've landed the catch, now leave me to eat in peace. I will not acknowledge what has been done, not yet, this is not the time.

Slowly and silently doing her best not to turn her thoughts towards all that has been lost to her, Kat picks up her utensils and attempts to begin breakfast again.

Following Josh's instructions and working under his supervision, Raevyn attempts the multi-Trump technique, making Trumps of herself to start with. Unpracticed as she is, she can't make as many as he can, but gets a few working Trumps done after a time.

She's a little nit-picky about the quality of the art; a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to her drawing abilities. Her concentration's on the boards in front of her, one ear tuned to Josh's voice for any tips he might give.

Raevyn answers any questions Josh has, very honestly. She talks about 'helping' her mother with her work as a child, and actually helping her before she died. She talks about the archipelego where they lived, describing it, and sailing with her father.

She does talk to him about Caine, telling him what she remembers, what he taught her, trying to draw out more about his relationship with his father and what he learned. About Neptune House, all she really has to say is, "It's a pleasant, comfortable place. I like it there, there's a grand view of the sea and the woods are great for riding. But it is very removed, and gets a little lonely. Near Amber, but not too near, you know?"

"What was growing up like for you? I know there were times Dad was gone for a time, always coming back with stories. And you mentioned a trip you and some of our other cousins took to that tower. What was that like?"

It is good to get at the trail as quickly as possible though I guess." Roland glances around at the maps, getting a feel for what's displayed, if there's anything particularly interesting he'll step over to examine it...anything out of place, maps that aren't of Amber, Trumps, things like that.

"I'm new to this place, I don't know how things works here. It seems to me that investigating Rinaldo is the best avenue of investigating Dunstan. But given that Rinaldo is coming here soon and Random distinctly didn't ask us to stick around for that I assume that we're supposed to do something else...No no, I'm not asking you what to do, I realize that if you hadn't wanted me to figure it out for myself you would have given me orders...Heh, no I don't have any particular point here...It's morning and I have a lot on my mind. I figure it's better to ramble at you whom I trust and who is also somewhat used to it, rather than to someone else who doesn't know me at all."

Need to go get breakfast soon.

"Actualy, I do have a couple logistical questions...Where can I get a full deck of Trumps? I want the whole set, dead relatives too. Who should I be reporting to? Random directly? You?...And finaly, need me to bring you some breakfast dad? You look like you've been up for a while."

Nothing Roland thinks is out of the ordinary. Orders, troop and supply lists, military maps.

"Hum, I probably look worse than I feel, I actually got a few hours this morning between three and 6, I think. No problems. I'll walk down to the dining room with you, I need a break." They head down together.

"Well, to take your last question first, I think he said report to Flora. Unless you feel there is something she shouldn't hear or handle, call me or Random instead, but I think he wants everything but the extraordinary to go through her as 'Trump Central.' Same answer for Trumps, Flora has charge of all the official ones now, she can sign some out. Not sure what you mean by a 'full set,' but you can ask her for any and all, see what you get."

"As for Rinaldo, remember he's both Family and a king in his own right. Amber has treaties with Kashfa. We can't just go around 'investigating' him, it has to be clandestine. That's called espionage, where most people come from. You don't send four people to do espionage unless they are highly trained in just that. Now, if things take you that direction, that's another thing, but it's all kind of delicate at the moment. Rinaldo has also been threatening Begma over the Eregnor situation again, when we thought that was all settled. So, when Rinaldo visits, I want you all safely away, and we will 'investigate' in the time-honored manner of diplomacy."

"If you want more explicit advice, I would say follow up on the obvious - the keep. Oh, don't go charging in...didn't you say you made some acquaintances there? I mean, the place is not a sealed bubble, there is commerce in and out all the time, by sea and land. Maybe Flora has a trump of Jasra, might be worth seeing what that yields - that just crossed my mind, not sure if anyone else thought of it."

At this point they arrive at the dining room. Fiona is already there, and Bleys comes in a few minutes later, and joins her. Kat really wasn't all that hungry anyway, yeah right, none the less she pushes her plate away having lost what appetite she did possess. "As I originally told Fiona, Rinaldo had no part to play in my arrival. Why? Because I don't know him, we have never met." Are you telling me you're quite prepared to keep me here and interogate me to get answers you can't find on your own? How resourceful of you. So if he knows about the 'cover story' who else does? Why keep it from my cousins if Random is not keeping it from my aunt's and uncle's, though it was more like Fiona's confidence extended to her brother than Random's.

"It was made fairly evident to me that I should expect situations such as this to arise, admittedly I didn't expect one so soon. I might not have the liberty you speak of Uncle, but I do know I do not answer to you. I swore an oath which I will uphold unto death, but as I recall that oath did not have me answering to you. If the King wishes me revise my thinking on that matter, I shall look forward to the correction."

"So, if you don't want to tell me how you feel, tell me what you think. I want to understand. Kat stands, breakfast now completely lost. "If you want to understand, then examine the past and the truth behind her withdrawal. Three hundred years she has been content to be forgotten and hidden, so will pass another three hundred. Think you can find her? I doubt it. Think you can use me to get to her? Again, you're mistaken. A threat to Amber? You insult me and her at the possible inference of such. She may have withdrawn in body and spirit but never love of this land." Kat makes ready to leave as she slides her chair towards the table. "Would either of you mind terribly much if I had a servant bring me breakfast? I seemed to have recovered my appetite along the way and can't be bothered wasting time heading to the dining room." Nor do I want to chance seeing Bleys again any time soon. Kat takes a quick peek out onto the balcony. "So where do you two want me?" A quick grin, "Leaping over the rail?" Keeoping his voice very low, Julian says, "Random can be very subtle when he wants to be. It comes from being the best card player I ever saw - reading people, knowing where the equities lie. One thing about bluffing, it only works if you have the other player convinced you never bluff. I think it's an effective tactic on his part, not any inherent honesty. I think it amuses him to force Fiona onto the moral defensive by seeming so high-minded. Fi still craves power, so Random is letting her have an investment in Amber and the throne. With the Unicorn's endorsement, and the evidence of her eyes that being King is a lot of damned hard work, she is content to let Random be King, and be the power behind the throne. Knowing this, Random runs her ragged with vital business of the crown, knowing idle minds are the Devil's workshop. I think he guides her like a wilful riding-beast. The beast may have more power, but somehow the rider finesses the beast into gong where he wants. So don't make the mistake of thinking everything is as united a front as it seems."

"One thing you can be sure of, Random isn't much on ceremony, beyond what is necessary to be an effective ruler."

"Training among us can be handled in the gymnasium, it has fencing and sparring gear of all sorts, of exceptional quality, as well as other equipment."

He thinks a moment about the last question. "Flora is tough as long as she is allied with the winning side. That's why she is Random's strongest supporter, because she stands or falls on his rule. Her stock in trade is information, so I would say, unless it's part of the mission, don't give anything away for free. Make an exchange. She always wants more information, no matter what the source or apparent relevance. Offer her what you have, trade for what you want. You read Corwin's book; it's something of an ego-induced hallucination, but it has some elements of real truth to it, especially with how to deal with family. If you weren't my son, for example, you'd never be getting this for free. If you were cynical, you would think I am just binding you to me, putting you in my debt. But son," and here he puts his hand on Roland's arm, "That's not the case. Doubt everyone, but never me."

Raevyn, you can make some of, umm, yourself maybe? Or whoever. Just pick a spot where you can stand still for an hour or so. You don't have to freeze, just be comfortably still."

Julian's expression sours at his son's amusement. "I guess I deserved that, for the corniness factor if nothing else. But it's not untrue, what I said. Maybe you'll find out when you have a child." His eyes unfocus. "We haven't seen Corwin in a while. Merlin reported the last sighting, at that Pattern he drew...his trumps are still cold, but seem to be permanently blocked. It might be a function of that other Pattern, or he just may not want to take any calls. If you solve THAT mystery," he holds up a chunk of ham on his fork, "I'll salute you and say nice things about you in the Void. I can't say I miss him much, he always was a pain in the ass."

Raevyn giggles at Kat's statment. "No, nothing like that. But leaning on the rail might be a good pose. You won't have to stay there too terribly long, I promise." Raevyn makes arrangements to have food brought up for her cousin, and some snacks for Josh and herself.

Raevyn's fingers have paint on them; she looks a little sheepish. "I can never seem to keep my fingers free of paint; always messing with something. But I've never managed to break a paint brush yet."
Kat obliges and leans against the rail, using both hands on either side to grip the railing behind her. "Do you want me to smile? Smirk? Glare? This is going to be your artistic merit on display afterall. And I wouldn't be worried about a few fingers covered with paint, especially as it's something easily washed away."

Aw, damnit.

"Come on Dad. You know me better than that. I trust you...It's just that you nearly quoted a line from Corwin's book there...It was funny."

Julian: "Maybe you'll find out when you have a child."
"I suspect that's so....If you find some free time today to spar, or grab a drink, let me know, even among all this it'll be good to catch up. Father Tibrone sends his regards." Those two always did get along. Never could find out how they met up.

Thanks for the offer, I'm too tired to work out right now. I'll have a drink with you at lunchtime, if you like, then I plan to go to bed and sleep until morning, once everything is set." With that, he finishes the last bite of eggs and washes it down with the last bit of juice. He always was that way, planned everything to a T, even his eating habits... He gets up and, after final acknowlegements, heads back to the ops center.

As he is knocking, Roland hears light footsteps behind him, and turning, sees Flora returning to her office. She guides him lightly aside by the pressure of one fingernail on his shoulder, - shivers - then unlocks the door, blocking Roland's view while she does it.

Preceding him inside, she takes a seat behind her large desk and leans back a bit, waving Roland into a chair. "Business or pleasure, Roland?" The words and the languid expression on her face trigger caveman responses deep inside him somewhere, suppressed with some difficulty. Damn, she uses her femininity like Benedict uses a blade, and my defenses are inadequate.

Josh smiles, differently from his usual slightly embarrassed expression. Maybe painting and not really looking at, or making eye contact with, Kat, allows him to relax. "Well, it was a long time ago. I'm around fifty, by the way, subjectively, I know it doesn't look like it. I think I was maybe ten and I was bugging dad about getting a pet. He's never been an animal person, liked ships better than horses and all. I think it was half a practical joke that he brought Lester home one day. He had been cleaning the rats off a ship in dry-dock. Normally you just have a few cats aboard ship, and that's that, but when you put a ship into dry dock, normally you strip everything out, including bilge and ballast, and really give it a thorough going-over. So as he tells it, as he's inspecting the work, the chief shipwright tells him that there's a really tenacious rat deep in the bow, and they can't get at it, and it had already torn up two cats. They tried boat pikes but the thing seemed to be unusually tough, even biting through the shaft of the pike."

"Dad figured it must be a shadow-rat, some form that was tougher than ordinary - or maybe not a rat at all. So he goes in after it with daggers, and kills it himself. Bit his arm pretty good, too. He drags it out and finds out it was a mother defending her pup. He was about to kill the little guy, when he thinks it would be a grand joke to give me this rat baby, which would probabaly bite me a few times, shut me up for a while and swear me off pets. And I mean, normally rats live something like three years."

"What he didn't realize was that, yeah, this rat strain was the Amberite of rats. I went and found Lester's home shadow later, I think, and rats are the dominant rodents, only kept under control by even nastier predators. Anyway, Lester turned out to be smarter, tougher and much longer-lived than Dad expected, and he became my friend and confidant, especially when he was away, which was a lot. Mom liked him too, actually, my mom's people are very tolerant of unusual things, and she had had some kind of hamster-like critter when she was young....anyway, I raised him, hand-fed him, took him everywhere. I brought him through the Pattern with me, which toughened him up even further, and I hope will extend his life. I've taught him all sorts of things...and I lost him once, found him again in Shadow. That's a wierd experience, seeing something you love die but being able to find it again, seemingly unchanged...the only difference I found was that little white spot on the back of his right front leg...I don't think anyone will ever know all the ins and outs of Shadow and why it works the way it does."

Josh isn't the only one to relax with the telling of Lester's tale, as Kat seems to loosen up a little as she follows along. "I've heard they're very cunning animals, so I'll have to pay attention if he ever deigns to show me the way to the kitchen again. Never had a pet per se myself, though I have had a favourite steed or two in my lifetime. Can't say that I've ever lost anything in Shadow either." She stops then and there, growing distant as she looks away to the horizon off to one side, "Yes, there is so much to know about Shadow, I can't ever imagine anyone knowing it all."

Looking back, she offers Josh a warm, friendly smile. "This must be somewhat difficult for you, Roland and Raevyn have already indicated their own troubles with it, with Rinaldo I mean. I don't mean to draw up any bad blood, it seems you miss your father and I can't say that I blame you for that, nor could anyone. I suggested to Raevyn that if one of us does need to speak to him at some point, that I would be happy to relieve the three of you from the burden. I would have liked to have met your Father but I'm very glad to have met his son." I can't explain it but there's something about Josh I like. Like Raevyn and Roland he is very much himself and open, prepared to extend the hand of friendship. What a strange mix we are, this new generation of Amberites. I think Caine would have been proud of his son, even though I'm not exactly sure why. Again, I just can't put my finger on it.

That's probably one reason why we are expected to leave before he visits, because of me. What Dad did, killing Brand, he did for good of the realm, and it was agreed upon as such by everyone. Rinaldo killed Dad for what...simple vengeance? I hope Dad's blood curse still keeps him up at night, and eventually brings him down. I don't know what I'd do if I ever met him." It's a domino effect. Caine kills Brand. Rinaldo kills Caine. Any number line up to kill Rinaldo. So if that had of occurred, who would be lining up to avenge Rinaldo's death?

"Forgive me Josh," Kat is remorseful but she plunges on, "For raising a topic which pains you. It is evident it is a difficult one for you to discuss, as with others. Unfortunately due to our assignment I don't think it is one that can be avoided completely. I will not tiptoe around such, as I believe that would be disrespectful to all three of you. It is painful for you all but none of us are children to be hushed and protected any longer. There's no need to speak of it any further here and now, but know should I mention it again, it is not to cause you discomfort or anger you, it will be because there is a need."

What we're setting out to do though could bring us around to his father's killer and if it does, what then? First and foremost we're to investigate the Keep and Dunstan, but I have a strong feeling it could lead us to Rinaldo's door. Who will I pity the more? Rinaldo or Josh? I can't blame Josh for feeling the way he does, but likewise I couldn't say I blame Rinaldo for doing what he did.

Kat sighs and turns against the railing to look fully towards the view on offer. So here we are, about to set off on this errand and three of the four have the potential to be loose canons should we encounter Rinaldo. Youngers: [the seven PCs plus] Joss, Elress, Loric, Joshua, Merlin, Martin, Tatyana (Katrine), Cassandra (Dierdre), Logan (Mirelle), Coriander (Merlin/Coral).

The library hints at others but nothing solid.

As hard as it might be, if the topic comes up I cannot avoid it in order to make the three of you comfortable." We'll never get anything accomplished that way.

She offers a weak smile and starts heading towards the door, "I wasn't sent here to win a popularity contest, so I will be the one to bruise and I cannot continually apologise for doing so. I don't think either you or Josh needs me for anything else so I'll be on my way, rather than sticking around to sour the day any further. In the afternoon, Prince Bleys comes out to the yard. Coincidence? I don't think so... The action slows as most of the men turn to watch him approach. He seems to relish the attention.

Picking up two wooden shortswords, he goes over to the grizzled, peg-legged marshal. After speaking to him for a moment, the man calls the soldiers to formation and attention.

"Prince Bleys has kindly consented to practice with us today. Everyone armor up well, and order yourselves by ladder ranking." This word triggers Kat's memory of the chalkboard nailed to the barracks wall, showing a practice duel challenge ladder. As they are doing that, the marshal comes over to Kat and the Orphans, saying, "Milady, you and your men are welcome to join in the practice, but I advise you to armor up, the Prince's blows are shrewd."

Bleys, after a few moments of warmup, stands in the center of the main challenge ring. The first four men enter the ring with him, and go to the corners. A lunch out in the Japanese gardens sounds lovely. I'm sure she'd enjoy it if she's free. If she's not, then she's just missing out, I guess."

As Kat observes, the system seems to be that as one man is out, another takes his place, so Bleys always has four opponents, relatively fresh. The rules seem to be that a good, clean blow to a vital spot would mean the man was out. Most of the opponents used standard sword-and-shield style, which theoretically provides Bleys with more difficult targets. Bleys, however, doesn't believe in relying on the rules.

Despite having seen her uncle do some similar things with the Orphans back home, she is unprepared for this demonstration. Family gossip and information passed down from her parents had indicated Bleys was second only to Benedict as a swordsman, but she never appreciated what that meant, until this day.

The four men warily shuffle in, shields up, swords in striking position. The first man to attack feints in sixte, executes a very fast reverse moulinet and attacks in prime. The man on the other side, clearly expecting this, simultaneously tries a fast head cut, then a reverse.

As the first man's moulinet resolves, Bleys steps slightly to the side and lowers his head enough that the man behind misses, and parries the first man's attack in prime with his left blade and snaps his other sword in a reverse cut behind the shield, and the man's helm jerks sideways with the force of the blow. Stepping forward into the fallen one's place, Bleys circles right and knife-kicks directly into the shield of the man on his right, sending him sprawling. As the other two move in to attack side-by-side, he tosses his left-hand blade into the air just long enough to grasp the shield of his left-side opponent and pull the shield edge in and left, exposing the man to his thrust to the body, and the man goes down with an "oof". The last man backpedals, buying time for the replacements to move in, but Bleys isn't having any of it. Letting his spinning blade fall into his left hand, he uses a windmilling move to beat the man's blade and shield out of line and hammer him in the helmet with a double blow.

The sparring continues in this manner for more than half an hour, one unarmored man with two blunted shortswords dispatching the armored and shielded in ways that rely not at all on clean blows and "would-haves." Each impact is enough to leave real bruises and headaches on the soldiers involved. Still, Katarzyna knows that were he to use his full strength, he would be shattering shields and breaking limbs.

The demonstration is a thing of beauty, in a brutal, warlike sort of way. No fencing match or elegant point-based swordfight, this is a tiring, messy melee. One shrewd warrior manages to strike a blow to Bleys upper arm, but elsewise he is untouched. In due time it comes the turn of her Orphans, then Katarzyna. Bleys isn't even breathing hard. As she steps up into the ring, she recalls the tale she had heard of Bleys on the Eastern Stair, how they died and they died. I wonder if he is going to punish me now for my words earlier.

Kat's nervous but she doesn't let that stop her as she steps into the ring. This time I can't walk away unless I want a hit to the back of the head. Just concentrate on what you have to do and let the rest take care of itself.

So she does just that, trusting in the armor she's donned to protect her from any serious damage, that and the fact that Bleys hasn't been looking to maim, kill or destroy his opponents up to this point. She fights with a single sword (and dagger if one was about) and no shield, looking to score a hit and prepared to take a lot many more. Knowing that this isn't a proper fencing duel, she isn't overly concerned about the finer points of technique either. It's simply a matter of attack if possible and defend as necessary, along with pay attention. If I can learn something from how he handles a blade, then I'll be damned if I miss it.

As Kat's turn comes, Bleys gives her space and executes a double salute with his battered blades. She returns the salute, sword presented vertically, dagger down and out. They take their positions.

Bleys holds his blades low and high in positions reminiscent of the Florentine style. Kat takes up a more conventional epee-and-main-gauche style and steps into a very fast beat-beat-thrust-advance that forces Bleys back and circling to his left. He is fighting conservatively, not returning her attacks except to feint and thrust at a similar tempo.

Appreciative murmurs from the onlookers arise as the two display their swordsmanship. The Guard seldom gets to see two of the Family fence, as most of the time their pride demands they do it in private, in the fencing salle.

After lunch with Julian (something that will perhaps be reenacted later) Roland makes his way to the practice field, hoping to train with the guards.

Something's up...I can feel it, so much excitement. Using his height and his hearing Roland sees Bleys in the ring, battered men on all sides, and Kat preparing to square off. He immediately grabs the nearest man he can find and gets his attention.

"How do I sign up to spar next? And where do I find gear?" Gods, I'm glad we didn't end up having that beer at lunch.

"No, it's fine with me. I can understand that," Raevyn replies, following Josh down to the kitchens. Once there, she'll ask to help the cook put together a meal to eat in the Japanese gardens, then head out with Josh, looking for somewhere quiet. "Two picnic days in a row....Was that really only yesterday?" She shakes her head as she sets out the food.

Minoru the Japanese cook smilingly allows Raevyn to help him put the boxes together. So deftly does he control the food - and her - that only later does she realize that she has absolutely nothing substantive to do with its creation, beyond what anyone could do - "hold this," or "put that there, please."

Josh observes as they are leaving, Bento and a pot of o-cha in hand, "Minoru is a master chef. He trained at the Cordon Bleu as well as under local masters in Tokyo, so he can do anything well. Flora, bless her conniving heart, offered him a deal he couldn't refuse, somehow." They head on out to the gardens, and take seats upon the hard benches there.

Swirls are raked into patterns in the sand, surrounding rocks and bonsai. The walls block out all other stimuli, and water trickles down rocks in one corner and flows into a poi pond. A feeling of timelessness and peach descends upon the pair, and the eat in companionable silence. Josh wields his o-hashi expertly, even to picking up individual rice grains without effort. Raevyn quickly remembers her technique as well, and soon the food is finished, and they drink their tea while meditating on the sandy ripples.

One of the grizzled warriors quickly directs Roland to the practice gear, and a couple more help him armor up. "No need to sign up, sir, only the Lady and the Prince left on the list. In fact, according to the rules, up to four can be in the ring against him at a time, it might be amusing to have to deal with the two of you, and more fair to boot."

In the meantime, Bleys continues to fight defensively, drawing Katarzyna out into heavier and heavier attacks as she tries strongly to lay a plow in- anywhere. Every time she thinks she has him set up, the blow doesn't land. He's playing with me, damnit. Got to dig deep in my bag of tricks...

She remembers something her father once taught her, clever feint and attack intended to use the main-gauche in an unexpected way. Letting Bleys' riposte come in on her left, she parries with the main-gauche, then reverses the dagger to catch behind his guard and draw his arm forward, striking simultaneously with her epee. This is going to hurt, she thinks, as the move is normally made against a swordsman who has no second blade with which to attack.

It should have worked, - damnit! - but as the epee blade disengages and crosses to strike Bleys right forearm, briefly pinned by the main-gauche bind, he demonstrates his mastery by letting go of his blade, drawing out his hand from the trap. The sword falls from his hand, - victory of a sort - and she feels the slight vibration as her epee brushes - oh so lightly - his withdrawing fingertips, then her side explodes in pain as his left-handed sword-tip nearly punches through the armor over her kidney. Ahhg, Good thing that is blunted...I think I pissed him off.

She forces the pain aside and attacks with both blades. For a moment Kat has him on the defensive as he uses his one blade to fend off both of hers. Her breathing is heavy as one lung must do the work of two, and her attack falters with her spasming right side. She slows the attack as she hovers above his fallen second sword, unwilling to yield it back to him. In this pause she remembers, he won already, that was a killing blow...but this is too much fun to quit now...

"Thank you...I think I'll wait until bidden, I'd like to recieve a clean beating." Roland replies with a grin. Bleys catches sight of Roland warming up outside the ring. Giving him a quick salute, Bleys drops into a low crouch, normally more fit for a long blade than the short one. Damned showoff is the last thought through her mind as he explodes into a series of short chops designed more to beat her blades aside than actually contact. Driving her back, he reverses with a backwards fleche and scoops up his other blade.

Changing styles, his swords begin to move in a complex escrima pattern, something she has little experience with. Her blades are beaten aside, and beaten again in a whirlwind that speeds up, then speeds up again. Too late, she tries to adapt to the pattern and seek within herself what her father called "mindlessness." There isn't time, and as he speeds up again, the blades become a blur and cross, striking both of her wrists. Her numb hands drop her blades. Before they reach the dust, he has stepped into her, chest to chest, and places the tips of his shortswords, blades vertical, into her armpits. Nose to nose, through the grille, his grin almost makes the pain worth it.

"You'll do."

Moving back, he salutes her again with a bow, and beckons for Roland to step in.

Roland watches in mute facsination as Bleys demonstrates his suppremacy. Impressive and eclectic...I need to get to know this uncle, even if dad obviously doesn't like him.

Seeing that his turn has come Roland weighs his options, deciding on the single sword for now he lays the shorter at the edge of the arena.

He steps into the ring and salutes Bleys with his sword. "Honor to meet you uncle." He calls out. This should be fun... As soon as Bleys indicates his readiness Roland drops to a fighting stance, keeping his sword low in front of him. Should Bleys attack he'll defend and counter. But that's not likely, he'll test me as well. I'll need to attack well... As the two face off Roland's mind settles down into the purity and the beauty of battle, with little concern for pride, and a pure appreciation of the struggle.

When Roland enters the ring, Kat exits and gets her men to help her remove the armor. She watches as Roland and Bleys salute one another, looking forward to seeing how her cousin does against their uncle. She tries to hold off on examining the bruising to her side for the moment, as she really doesn't want to miss the combat on show. Her mind though isn't exactly on what her cousin and uncle are up to. You'll do, he said. I pray that's acceptance of sorts and nothing else. Damn this hurts! Damn he's good! I've never seen anything like that, I've never been on the receiving end of anything like that! I'm starting to think I might not want to get to involved with both of them. If Bleys has an interest and if I can learn from that, I could spare myself double the pain and misery.

She concentrates on the match unfolding and relents to the ministrations of her men, at least on her wrists to ensure she'll be able to use utensils tonight at dinner. Best to ensure the numbness is only fleeting and hopefully her wrists won't need strapping. Her thoughts again repeat themselves. Damn he's good! Try and pay attention to what he does.

Bleys' eyes narrow, and unfocus, and he settles into a western-style fencing stance, but left-handed. Does he respect a man more, or does he think I am better? I think I am, but...

The two remain this way for ten seconds. Fifteen. Twenty. Thirty. A minute. Both are relaxed, breathing deeply.

A muscle seems to twitch in Bleys' left thigh. Getting tired? Not too much, but it has to be something of a strain, while I am fresh...how long was it when he fought his way up the stair? Four hours, five until he tired? But that was point-work, and one-by-one... Bleys takes a short, sliding step forward, advancing to within extended striking range for Roland's longer weapon. Trying to get me to strike first...

A pair of feints come next, which Roland half-parries, keeping his blade low and ready, his stance deep and stable. Wish I had hakama, though I don't think it would help too much against this man... Bleys' toe digs under the dust as he advances, and Roland recognizes it just soon enough to avoid the spray of dirt kicked at his eyes, circling away and bringing his katana up to high guard. Got to remember this is practice combat, not fencing.

Bleys reverses both of his blades and holds the guards rather than the grips in his hands, and steps sideways and in with a speed matched only by the fluidity of the motion. Brushing Roland's blade aside with the blade-guarded forearm of his right hand, Bleys flips the left blade out to strike at his shoulder. Roland flows to his own right, recognizing the strike's weakness and taking the light tap on his armor.

Not an effective strike, but that style...what does it remind me of... Thoughts are a mistake as the strike bounces off the armor and Bleys drops without warning to the ground for a reverse leg sweep. The sweep is partially successful as Bleys heel impacts the unarmored spot on the back of his right calf. Fortunately Roland's weight is already coming off that leg. Both combatants spin away, Bleys rolling to his feet and Roland relaxing back into his stance. Embrace the void...that's what Father Tibrone said.

Swords still reversed, Bleys drops into a tiger stance, Kempo style. Strange thing for a swordfight. He slides forward, and Roland drops his hips and rotates them into a sweeping cut designed to be both unavoidable and unblockable. If he had been using Smoke, it could have worked, but Bleys flips out both blades - Sai technique! - the realization come simultaneous with the crossed-guard block and trap. Roland begins to pull his sword out of the locking guards, but Bleys has already let go of his right-hand blade. His hand draws back and blurs in a hammer strike, and the practice katana snaps cleanly at the tsuba. Cheater! That wouldn't work against Smoke! But this is not a fencing match. The follow-up blow with the hilt of the sword in his left hand is too quick to avoid, and Roland's helm rings and his head snaps sideways. Game, set, match. Damn.

Roland steps back, flipping the useless handle aside, and Bleys tosses his blades back over his shoulders, sticking them behind him in the hard earth. "Well done, Roland! We'll call that a marginal for me. I see a great future for you." He damns Katarzyna with faint praise...some mysogynistic tendency, or is it something more? "Let's break out some ale, shall we, ladies and gentlemen?" Ladies? Ah, there are a couple of women in the Guard, hard to tell under all the armor.

That won't work, he won't hit me there again, that would be too obvious. Roland's good, we should be able to provide sufficient protection for our cousins if the need arises. At least I hope so. I'm glad we're not leaving for three days.

Kat calls to Roland, "Well done Cousin, I'm impressed." I'm also in pain, don't make me ride Bordase any time soon. To Bleys she says nothing and even though she sticks around for the ale, she doesn't consume it. She gets a jug of water for refreshment instead.

The four of us are going to have to sit down and discuss this whole Rinaldo thing. "You could show our companions a bit more respect than that Kat. We're all adults, we've all faced loss. I'm not going to explode at Rinaldo the first time I meet him. My father got past it, that's enough for me. Raevyn, she's not the violent type. Josh has lived in Amber for a while now, people know him, he has a life here...Rinaldo has been around, Josh hasn't tried to kill him yet, not that I know of. Sure, I doubt they'll ever be friends, but really, you don't need to look at us all as liabilities. We're your allies, and worthy ones I think." He closes his eyes a moment a breathes deep. I don't look at the three of you as liabilities but given that none of you seem to know what you'll do or what you're capable of towards him, I think it's best that we're not around to find out. I'm not going to play tiptoe around Rinaldo and I told both Raevyn and Josh that." Kat tosses the jug aside, her own emotions finally getting the better of her now as everything starts crashing down upon her.

"I've had to put up with Uncles and Aunts and now cousins. I'm sorry you all lost a beloved Uncle and father, but damn you all, I've lost everything and do you see me running from it and crying foul all the bloody time?" Well she hasn't exactly faced it but she's not taking time to clarify that point. "No! I've got more important things to worry about than some bastard who killed Caine! Got it!?!" I didn't mean to set anyone on the back foot or cause offense and I know I've done that, but it's not to have anyone else wallowing in my misery Roland. Something catches Kat's attention and she looks beyond her cousin to the two men behind him and tells them, "We're in exile and can't return home until advised. I know what your orders are but this day you're dismissed and are free to do as you please. I expect to see you both tomorrow morning where we shall train again and examine our strategies. Of course, she usually has more time than what she had with Gray and Heldrik before making that kind of an attempt; she's also been at this for awhile now, and chalks it up to mild mental fatigue--unable to focus on what little impression she has. As she finishes Landon's set, she considers starting on Roland's; he was supposed to be coming back, to see how a permanent image was done, and his would be fairly easy at this point. 'He's probably busy, and if he returns in the middle of the process, I can show him enough. I should start off by demonstrating a single Trump anyway; I'm still learning this multiple image technique. After this, though, I'm taking a nap, or at the very least turning in immediately after dinner.'

Instead of heading back to his rooms Roland returns to the practice yard to see if Bleys is still around. Rather rude to run off like that so quickly...I haven't been gone five minutes, shouldn't be a problem.

Once outside he looks around for Bleys, should he find him Roland will approach, waiting for a moment to speak. No need to be rude by interrupting...Ah, I think my headache is clearing up now...not too bad.

Bleys is gladhanding the men still, praising them for their efforts, - undermining Random's control over his men? - and generally being the charming rogue that he is. When Roland approaches, Bleys notices immediately, - a more important influencee? - and calls out. "Roland, good to see you back from consoling your cousin."

Console...odd word to choose. He belittles her even when she isn't around...an act, or does he genuinely not like her?

"Hello again Uncle, we had some intragroup politics to straighten out...I think perhaps Katarzyna is overly concerned that the three of us are going to attack Rinaldo on sight...Reasonable fear, but unfounded I think." Roland hoists his flagon of ale in Bleys's direction. "It was good to spar with you, too many of my trainers in shadow look at swordsmanship as a game, as play, and rarely like to train in a manner that supports all aspects of true combat." He chuckles and smiles at his uncle. "I haven't had someone kick dirt in my eyes in quite a while, almost refreshing." Not really relevant that Smoke wouldn't have broken like that I guess...perhaps he wouldn't have been using those two swords either in a real fight, so many what-ifs, no need or reason to worry about them all.

Bleys returns the toast, and the smile. "She certainly seems earnest, doesn't she? Makes me wonder...I'm not so concerned you will go try to off the King of Kashfa. Should it come to that," here his smile becomes a wolfish grin, "That's my job."

"You see," he goes on, "Brother Ben has exactly one too many scruples to do what needs to be done, if he really has gone mad, or intends to harm Amber, sane or no, vendetta or no. Benedict stayed his hand when he could have killed Brand - saved Caine, saved Dierdre, saved the trouble Corwin's pattern caused...saved Eric, for that matter, if he wasn't so damned above it all. Always trying to take the high road, leaving us to do the dirty work. How the hell do you talk a megalomaniac out of realizing his ambition? Of course, you don't." He drains another glass, and seems slightly stiff. "I should have killed him when I had the chance," he mutters.

Interesting, the vendetta is not as dead as the official word would have us think. How odd...Monarchs putting a spin on the truth as suits their purpose? Goodness what's next?... Ale and irony mix in Roland's stomach and he craves simpler times.

Roland cocks his head to one side and looks at his uncle.

"I would be wary to kill a member of the family too, though perhaps not for the same reasons...Aside from wanting to keep one's relations alive for familial good feelings there's the blood curse to consider. I wonder if a bolt through the neck was enough to stop it? I wonder if maybe Caine found out." Why do I get the impression I'm treading on dangerous ground here?

Wired*Nun

Bleys smile freezes in place, becomes painted on. "Blood curse? Who knows... Family is not defined by blood, in my book. Blood here merely gets you opportunity for power. Family is defined by loyalty. How can a King be loyal to another King? How can one man sworn to support and defend one state, remain a loyal member of the royal family of another? You are only Family if your loyalties remain undivided. 'A man cannot serve two masters,' so it is written."

"No, this issue is as close to black and white as they come for me. You are either for Amber or against her. Call that a jailhouse conversion if you like, I made the mistake of thinking a madman should sit upon the throne. The blood remains upon my hands. I was, - am! - arrogant enough to believe I could be the best King there is. I am not arrogant enough to believe I know more, or better, than Grandmother. Or Grandfather. Or Dad, may he rot in heaven or rest in hell."

"Do you know what an epiphany is, Roland? Serpent curse you if you ever have one."

Bright-eyed, he drains another mug, then slams it down, leaving a deep dent in the wooden table. "Good bout, good talking with you, Roland. Give Julian my regards, I'm going home, I think." He steps away stiffly, rolls his aching shoulders, pulls out a trump, concentrates a moment, and rainbows out.

"Good by Uncle." Roland nods a salute to Bleys as he departs, setting down his own mug as well.

Interesting man...He's lived through interesting times...I think it might have scarred him, or perhaps the bit about the blood curse reminded him of something? Ha, or perhaps I shouldn't try to guess the motivations of my elders.

He takes his leave of the rest of the guard a few minutes later, returning his gear and making sure to thank the man who showed him where to get it in the first place. He tells them he'll be back tommorow to train with them if they don't mind.

His farewells said, Roland goes to Flora's office, stopping in a washroom along the way to make himself somewhat more presentable. Deep calming breaths accompany his footsteps. Calm...Just a woman, just sexuality...You can handle this, you've handled women like her before...Like hell you have boy...Fair enough, but you can handle this...

He knocks on her office door.

"Come in, Roland." Hmmm, and I thought cameras didn't work in Amber. Wonder if she has a permanent Trump camera mounted somewhere...wonder if that is possible... He opens the door, and strides in confidently, parking himself casually on the arm of an easy chair. Just be cool..."I am giving you what I can. Some I don't have duplicates of, and I never give away my last one. Vialle I am forbidden to give away, even if I would, which I wouldn't. Can't have the Queen vulnerable to any potential threat - oh, not you, sweetie, but you might lose it. She's not as tough as Family, if you come right down to it. Coriander is one I don't have, but she's only five or six, so I don't think she should figure in the games just yet. Merlin is raising her in the Courts. Coral is too dangerous to even mess with, since we still don;t know what the Jewel is doing, to her or in her. Jasra I give you under advisement, she is very dangerous. That's one of Merlin's, by the way, if you are aesthetically interested. Most of the rest are Fi's or Bleys, it's hard to get Alphas or Betas any more."

She pushes a stack across the desk for Roland to retrieve, along with an inlaid case of ivory, resin and mother-of-pearl. "That's a little gift, from me. Use it for the trumps I sign out to you, please. Keep one of me separate in your own case, theres an extra in the stack - and tell me if you lose them or get them stolen, I may be able to retrieve the case in Shadow, or even track the thief."

The stack includes: Finndo, Osric, Benedict, Katrine, Eric, Corwin, Caine, Deirdre, Dorian, Fiona, Bleys, Llewella, Brand, Flora x2, Delwin, Sand, Mirelle, Dalt, Joss, Elress, Loric, Joshua, Merlin, Martin, Tatyana, Cassandra, Logan.

"Here a couple more, part of the favor I talked about." She hands Roland one of Rinaldo. "You don't have this, officially. Certainly no official of the Amberite court would be so indiscreet as to pass out a Trump of a fellow monarch without permission. If you have to explain it, say you stole it from Dunstan or somesuch. He did it himself, so that tale may even stand up."

The next one she hands him is Dworkin's. She smirks a bit as he take that one. "Never know when you might need some divine intervention, and since the Unicorn ain't doing standups, her mate is the next best thing. Oh, don't say anything like that to him. He won't get angry, but he won't forget either."

Flora then pulls off a tourmaline-colored ring off her middle finger. Roland hadn't noticed it before, she must have had the stone reversed. Did she just flip me the...naw... Dropping it into his hand, she says, "Wear this from now on, unless there is some overriding reason not to. It's a Pattern beacon, one use, very powerful. It will do two things. One, it will emit a burst of Pattern energy when activated, enough to disrupt or destroy almost anything not resonant with the Pattern; and that energy will be broadcast loud enough that we will hear it back here in Amber. It's for dire emergencies, life and death stuff, either to save yourselves, or if you want to call a full-scale assault on your position. Use your best judgment, but it can only be used once. You only have to think to activate it - you will have to concentrate like a Trump contact. We didn't want it activating acccidentally, after all." The ring just fits on his left pinky.

"Now," leaning back and stretching one arm behind her head, "anything else I can do for you?"

Roland picks up the Trumps carefully, like newfound wealth. He looks through them briefly while he listens, nodding at the appropriate points.

When Flora hands him the ring he pushes it on his left pinky finger. Wow...I wonder who made this little thing? Am I now wearing a tracking device, a bug?

Flora:"Now," leaning back and stretching one arm behind her head, "anything else I can do for you?"
Roland's jaw nearly drops open at this classic move, but he manages to control himself, somewhat. Don't stare...No double entendre...

"You've done more than enough Flora, and I thank you for it, your favor is well appreciated. Is there anything at all that I can do for you?" There must be a quid pro quo here, if not today, then eventualy.

"I'm taking a break," she says to Josh, cleaning up her work area, putting things away carefully. After everything seems in order and her own hands have been washed and dried, she sits in a comfortable chair, thinking.

She pulls out her Trumps and looks through, finding the rest of the cards Siodmak had handed her in the Keep--copies of Roland and Joss. [i]'He did these rather quickly...I would have liked to have gotten the chance to see the ones Roland mentioned were hanging on the walls, as well; I still may get that chance...I really should take the time to look at these closely. Roland finds himself once more in the library, surrounded by more knowledge than would be easy to digest in a lifetime, even a very long lifetime. I'll need to be very lucky and very smart if I'm going to learn anything of use here.

He begins with history books, looking in to the Golden Circle kingdoms, accounts of the patternfall war. He scans books about shadow sorcery and the courts of chaos. His search is intuitive, scanning books rapidly to see if they look promising, looking more closely when they do. Jotted down on his notebook is a general list of topics he has red-flagged. Any mention of them he chases down thoroughly.

Keep of Four Worlds
Broken Pattern
Shadow Sorcerers using Trump
Asmundson
Enemies of Gerard
Enemies of Amber
Rinaldo
Shadows of Amber
Dunstan
Lost children of Amber
Corwin's pattern
Thari-English dictionaries

So much to factor in...I know I'm missing something... Hours pass...

While Roland is researching in the Library, various people go in and out, looking up things, taking out books. There is a librarian, who helps anyone sign out materials that they wish to take out.

Roland's research yields the following:

Keep of Four Worlds - Just what is in GBOA.

Broken Pattern - see below.

Shadow Sorcerers using Trump - Enough instances to convince Roland that Trump is not a power in and of itself. Shadow sorceres can do all sorts of Trump that function only with their own shadow, or occasionally, related shadows. Combined with Broken Pattern, it can work across shadows. The farther the user tries to go or call, the greater chance of failure. There is always a risk of something bad happening when using BP Trump. There are also trumplke powers in use in the Courts, but very little is known about them. It is possible that Trump is simply one established, orderly form of greater underlying principles.

Asmundson - Nothing

Enemies of Gerard - Enemies? What enemies? None known.

Enemies of Amber - Anyone who is envious of her power. Significant ones include Dalt, Deela (presumed dead), Dara (courts). There are hints that Delwin and Sand were exiled by Oberon for some crime.

Rinaldo - What is in GBOA, plus: dissolved marriage to Coral by decree (he's the King, after all), married Nayda/Ty'iga, has ruled well but is not a firm ally of Amber - has been agitating for the Eregnor territory, extending Kashfa's influence as something of a counterpoint to Amber. Lots of bureaucratic trivia associated with Kashfa, not significant.

Shadows of Amber - Shadows of Amber without Pattern can be found in infinite variety - in fact, quite easily. No shadows of Amber including a BP are known. There are only the three main reflections of the full Pattern. Broken patterns of a range of efficacies have been discovered, but none even within the Golden Circle. It seems to not be a function of simple proximity. There is some indication that there is a pattern to their metaphysical locations, having to do with the interactions of the wave functions of undershadow between Amber and the Courts. The creation of Corwin's Pattern seems to have radically rearranged the locations of these broken patterns, and created more of them.

Dunstan - nothing not already known.

Lost children of Amber -

Katrine is mentioned as a daughter of Oberon and Myra Delein Entrecot, a shadow woman of extraordinary beauty who died giving birth to Katrine. Oberon was, by all accounts, heartbroken, and mourned her for some years. Katrine had a daughter, Tatyana, before she took the Pattern. Katrine never came back from her Pattern initiation teleport. When Tatyana took the Pattern, she said she would ask the Pattern to take her to her monther. She also never returned.

Dorian and Fehrick were twins born to Celerene, reputed to be a daughter of Chaos (house unknown) during a temporary rapprochemont with Chaos, perhaps an official marriage. The marriage did not last long, and Celerene took the young twins left Amber by Trump, but never arrived in Chaos. Rumor has it Oberon arranged their disappearance or death.

Mirelle is reputed to be Random's older sister, though some accounts credit her birth to an unknown shadow woman. The unattributed account says that she was killed by a shadow sorcerer named Malefix, and Oberon took personal revenge by transforming (editing? Shapeshifting?) everyone who had any hand in it, plus every servant of Malefix, plus Malefix's entire extended family, and his sorcerous colleagues, into immortal intelligent piles of sludge, and slowed the shadow time to minimum, so they would suffer for all time.

Logan was raised in Amber, mostly by Random, and left into shadow soon after taking the Pattern, saying he wanted to find a shadow of his mother, despite all advice to the contrary. He has not been heard from in about forty years.

Cassandra is an unknown daughter of Dierdre. Martin claimed Dierdre told him about Cassandra in a conversation he had, but was sworn to secrecy until after Dierdre's death at Patternfall. No one knows where she might be or even what she looks like.

Corwin's pattern - nothing beyond GBOA.

Thari-English dictionaries - Lots of material, mostly written or dictated by Flora. With time and motivation, one could teach onesself English.

How long have I been at this? So many leads...so many of them all but certain to be irrelevant....At least I can tell Kat there's enough information here for her to figure out her riddle, probably would be easier though if she'd just tell me, it's been a few years but my English is still pretty flawless I'd bet.

He drums his fingers on the desk for a few moments, double checking his written and mental lists, making sure he hasn't missed anything astoundingly obvious. With apparent satisfaction he brings his hands together giving the books a little salute before rising and gathering his things. Damn but this is a nice library...If I had more time and more leisure...

Shouldering his pack, and having cleaned up the area he was using, Roland leaves the library, making his way towards the dinner he can smell in the distance.

...Still don't really know what we're going to do first though...It would be nice if I had some of those scrying powers I heard Heldrik talking about...I feel a little thuggish for this type of a mission.

I gather that the younger one was on his first visit to Amber. Of course, no one but family is allowed to carry weapons in the presence of the King, and he was very offended that you had your blade on and he couldn't. Sign of manhood and all that, in their culture. Why, looking for more weapons practice? I don't think they understand the concept of 'sparring;' you might have to kill him, and that would probably be...impolitic. Speaking of Ghenesh, how's that whole thing coming from a legal standpoint, Bill?"

"Well," he replies, "the treaties all look simple, solid, they just needed a bit of updating. No need to call in the heavies, I don't think."

Flora responds expansively, enjoying her audience. "Seventeen kingdoms - or equivalents, call them what you will - have Golden Circle treaties and have full shadow-paths laid down by those of the Blood. Most are by sea. Another ten or so can be accessed by sea if one has the nerve and the information, but they are not regular trade routes. There are three land routes regularly traveled - northwest up over the pass, west through Arden, southwest along the coast. There are some smaller trails if one knows how to find them, probably left by those of the Blood making their own private access points. These are not generally acknowledged, but everyone knows they are there. Julian almost certainly has several for his troops to access nearby shadow without his presence, for example. The same for the Fleet - the warship captains have access to information the merchant marine doesn't. It is easier to get in than out, as well, for Amber draws all like a magnet. There are natural breaks in shadow that appear and disappear from time to time, giving rise to supernatural tales even in shadows devoid of such things."

"Has anyone found a way to monitor these paths?...How far can one make it from Amber without venturing into Shadow? What I've studied of astronomy and astrophysics in shadow has always left me wondering how it meshes with reality."

Rarely get a geography lesson at dinner, might as well make the most of it.

"Well, as long as you don't follow the paths, you can go quite a ways, I suppose. Gerard says Amber is on quite a large continent; he circumnavigated it once. Beyond that...maybe we sit on a turtle's back. I imagine you could ask Fiona, she has probably scryed it all out sometime. But who cares? If there's no one there, it doesn't exist, hmmm?" This last, archly. "As far as who monitors them, what do you think Julian's men do, sit around and roast wild boar all day? They have quite an area to cover. Keeps them fit as well, I imagine. Not great soldiers, but great rangers, yes."

Roland continues to ask Flora questions here and there, giving the others time to interject, but generaly helping her keep the conversation moving. Whenever anything truly interesting strikes him he makes careful mental notes to look into it later....Dinner progresses in this way for some time.

[Lets move this forward]

Dinner passes pleasantly, Flora the impeccable hostess and wit. Josh makes the first move, after he sees Raevyn done eating. He leans over to give Flora a chaste kiss on the cheek. [oops] "Good evening, Aunt Flora, thank you for a most convivial evening." He gives Rae a little sideways head-nod, hoping she will come along. "We have a few more things to paint, anyone else care to confer?"

LynMars

Raevyn carefully dabs her mouth with her napkin before pushing back her chair and standing. "Yes, I want to see if I can't get any more minor things here and there done before turning in." 'And I'm still not happy with the quality of those...Ah, well, what you get when you must rush things.' She offers her aunt and Bill a nod and her usual pleasant smile before turning to follow. She gives Roland and Kat each a You coming? look.

Kat was content to just listen to the dicussion at hand, happy to consume a meal in peace. When dinner and conversation seem to be winding down, she makes ready to leave also. "I should get back to my reading so I can pass the book along. There's not much more to go now, so I should be able to pass it over in the morning, Raevyn." She stands and inclines her head slightly to Florimel and Bill, "Good eve to you both."

Josh and Raevyn head up to Raevyn's room. Once they get there, Josh sighs. "I'm not sure I can take another one of those. Maybe tomorrow evening, if we're still in Amber, we can eat somewhere else. Anyone else we need to paint?"

"That wasn't so bad; I kind of enjoyed listening in. I can't think of anything else at the moment, and if we start any now besides, it'll be really late by the time we finish." She looks at all the Trumps drying, chewing her bottom lip as she considers. "Maybe we should do a few more copies of some we have? Were you able to get decent Trumps of Heldrik or Gray? I wasn't. I didn't make that many of Landon either; maybe more of him. Or maybe one or both of the others will show up wanting to talk." Rae shuts up, reddening slightly. "There I go prattling again..."

After leaving the dining hall, Kat returns to her rooms and resumes reading. She intends to finish the book tonight. If anyone wants me, then I won't be too hard to find down here as I've made it obvious what I'm up to.

Josh replies, "Umm, no, I don't think we were together long enough. I could do another set of Landon, but I think it would be overkill. If Roland wants to come up and discuss technique, I'm game, but otherwise, I don't feel much like more painting tonight." He crosses to the balcony, taking a seat in one of the chairs there, then hops back up. "Too cold," he says, and gets two blankets out of a wardrobe. He hands one to Raevyn, and wraps the other around himself before sitting down. The waning moon reveals the shimmers of the ghost city off to the far left. Lester crawls under the blanket with Josh and curls up contentedly. Josh strokes him absently beneath the cloth, looking off in the distance. To Raevyn's inquiring look, he says, "Stuff. Just...stuff. Maybe..." he shakes his head. "Nevermind."

LynMars

Raevyn wraps up in the blanket and sits down, relieved for once not to pick up her brushes again. She frowns a little Josh's way, then looks up at the sky, settling back in her chair. "Okay, then. I won't pry." After a little while, she says. "I wonder what the research has dug up? Because right now, I can't think of many places this mission will take us besides Rinaldo or the Keep. I think we're supposed to avoid the one, and as for the other..." She wraps the blanket a bit tighter around herself. "I don't know if I want to go back there; I know Dunstan's not the most stable guy, and he has a lot of soldiers and other things at his disposal. Not to mention my father nearly forbid it; he wants to know the minute we start that way. I'm afraid he may do something..." She shakes her head, trying to clear it.

"Yeah, well, maybe Landon and Co. will come up with something we can use. It's the usual situation, though, they all know more than they're telling. I do too, and I can't tell. I'd like to get on the road, if only to talk about...stuff...I'm...ahh, shit. Hah. Conflicted, is that the word they use? Dad said emotions get you killed, Mom says emotions are temporary, focus on the permanent. I'm sure they're both right. Wish I could just go back out into shadow and live for a while. I guess I could, come to think of it. I could take a couple weeks off in shadow and come back tomorrow, here, but the problems are still waiting, so I couldn't enjoy it."

LynMars

Rae nods. "Hiding in Shadow isn't always the best solution. It can work for some situations, but for something like this, one just may as well face it. I'm still not sure I'm ready to myself, but I'll do what I can." She smiles over at her cousin. "I'm sure you'll get it sorted out. It'll be easier when we get away from here and you can explain."

Flora responds, "Hmm, not so much books as sources. Some things are simply not left for public view. Or even private, for that matter. I'm sure you understand the concept of 'clearances' that high-technological societies tend to use." She leads Roland back to her office, shuts and locks the door, and gets settled in a comfortable chair, her feet up on a hassock.
"So here we are, ask away. You're getting a lot of freebies because this is a mission for the Crown, I'd advise you to make the most of it. Oh, by the way, you may want to know," and here she summarizes what Landon told her in his latest Trump call.

Josh says, "Hmmm, yeah, I guess so. Everyone's got their viewpoint. Most of my cousins either have homes and family near Amber - Roland, you, Kat, Landon, Arrotel, Loric, Elress - or they lost their home and family, like Heldrik and Gray. I'm in the middle; Amber is not my home, never was. I have a right to be here, but really, my connection to this place is all of my own choosing anymore. I'd rather live with Mother, or at least, near her, you know, find the right girl and all...but things like this will always come up, and the family will always find a way to use me. Maybe Rinaldo has it right. Become a king of someplace important enough that the family leaves you alone, more or less. Ahhh, not my bag, as Corwin once said to me." An odd expression crosses his face, then is even more quickly vanished.

"I don't think I'd want to rule some place for very long; that really doesn't seem like much fun, when you look at the details. I don't come to Amber very often; I think this is the most I've been in the castle since I was very young. It's interesting, at least."

She leans her head against the back of the chair, relaxing. 'I shouldn't fall asleep while we're talking...but it's been a long day...Stay awake, Raevyn, you don't want to offend him...'

A few moments later, Raevyn feels Trump being used in Josh's room. Shiffling quickly through her own trumps, she determines that none of those are resonating.

"Freebie or not, I'll certainly remember the help Flora. Thank you." He settles in to a chair, facing Flora. "Storybook realms...very strange."

"I'm not sure I know where to begin, books are nice, all the facts are layed out before you and all you have to do is turn a page to learn more. People require the right questions, and I'm affraid that I might not know them in this case." He closes his eyes and rolls his shoulders, thinking.

"I see a few themes in recent events. Trump powers being used against Amber...Trump powers not based upon the pattern, or I think, Logrus. Likely broken pattern, or maze...whether the two are the same we'll have to wait for Landon's team to discover. And the Keep, what is it? Why does so much power spring from the ground there?...Is Jasra really out of the picture...Gods...And then there's the certainty all of you elders are running around investigating other matters, likely more important leads, but damned if I know what they are." He pauses for breath and sighs, turning his eyes up to his aunt. "Fogrive me aunt, it's been a long day of reading duty tome."

"Good night, Josh," Raevyn answers, clasping his hand in return. When she feels the Trump energies, she looks, but can tell it's none of the ones she has. 'I don't have one of Vela, though; he might be calling her. The way he spoke of her, he might be missing her a little. Maybe I should paint one or two of her soon.' Rae gets up and goes back inside, making sure her door is secure, then turns in for the night.

A sympathetic smile from Flora makes things feel better. "I thrive on information, but I don't have a lot tied together right now. I see a vague picture of a conspiracy against Amber - again - but this time I don't think any of the loyal Royals are involved. I don;t see anyone trying to take the throne, as much as to weaken Amber. Why Joss, for example? Maybe it's better to ask, why not anyone else? Who else would have been a good target? Benedict was moving before the shot struck - call it instinct, or maybe he saw the flash - so he was unlikely to die. Taking out Random does little but stir the sleeping tiger - Benedict would likely be Reagent and a very effective one at that. Gerard is, in the grand scheme, not important enough. Others could take over the Fleet. If I wanted to assassinate someone to hurt Amber, I'd nominate Fiona or...me, perhaps. Neither of us was on that platform. I still think it's an attempt to throw us into confusion. Still, with Landon's report, and this Nightmare creature..."

"As far as Trump powers...only Dworkin would probably thoroughly understand what Trump really is. I had some indications that Trump involves even deeper principles than the Pattern or Logrus, something to do with undershadow. No other power is as effective at communication or transportation, though others can do similar things. Perhaps Trump needs a framework such as the Pattern to effectively utilize it."

"As far as the aKeep...Maybe Merlin would know something, as he had direct experience with the Fount. His accounts indicate that the Fount is a well of magical energy, but its effects are permanent, and can be carried by a suitable vessel - a person - from place to place, so the energy does not unravel when shadow laws change. Maybe that is actually Trump energy. Rinaldo claimed to have been offered the treatment and declined on the basis that he thought it drove Brand mad. Dunstan obviously has undergone it. Four shadows come together there in a very odd arrangement. It was obviously constructed that way, no shadow does that naturally. Some sorcerer, perhaps a Chaos lord in ancient times, constructed that thing. My theory is that it is older than Amber, and when Amber came into being, it was moved away from the Courts out farther into shadow."

"Did Landon give any details about the Nightmare that Asmundson spoke of? Does it appear human, demonic, some creature? I worry about something traipsing around Shadow raising crops of new Trump artists. Trump is too versitile and subtle a power for me to like the sounds of that at all...You mentioned Dworkin, where is he these days?" Interesting theory about the fount...The creation of Amber shattering the unity of the courts, scattering places and things to the far reaches of Shadow...No real way to find out, and fairly academic though.

[Just posted for reference to keep everyone abreast of what Kat is up to.]

Upon completion of the book, Kat sets it aside on the desk and makes some final notes of her own before closing her own book. She'd like to look out the window but there is none. I really should find out about another room, this time with a view.

With no other plans or intentions for the remainder of the night, she gets ready for bed to be well rested for tomorrow's activity. Before actually turning in, she meditates a little so as to clear her mind and possibly avoid any dreams or nightmares that might want to disrupt her sleep. All things in good time, until then, best to stay focussed on what's in front of me.

"He said that Asmundson said that it appeared as a black horse with a serpent's head. That seems too calculated a nod to both ends of the metaverse to not be contrived. Yes, Trump is a powerful and versatile thing. No wonder that Dworkin never taught anyone directly. I'm sure he knew the genie would come out of the bottle eventually...perhaps like all of us, he put off the hard decisions until later, or too late."

"Dworkin, I believe, lives at the Primal Pattern, and has forbidden anyone but the King to disturb him. Working on deep things, he said. After that bizarre surgery with the Jewel on Coral, I imagine there is something to be said for deep things. He never really explained that one. We can only surmise that he wanted the Jewel out of the hands of the Pattern but not in the control of the Logrus either. Did it ever occur to you that, if there is a Left Eye of the Serpent that represents Order, perhaps there is a corresponding Right Eye that is the Chaos jewel? With the creation of Corwin's Pattern, two-to-one as it were, the Serpent plus the Jewel might balance out two Patterns, and despite Dworkin's investment in the Pattern, I suspect he actually wants things as balanced as possible. I know I would. Maybe I'm projecting."

"Balance always proves its utility I think, it's not too far fetched to think that Dworkin might see it this way as well."

More chatting...more metaphysics...What is your game Flora? Also quite interesting that she put herself on a par with Fiona...Time to get back to business though.

"I gather that Dunstan has been to Amber before? Or at least had some contact with the people here, but I haven't heard any details about that?"

"Actually no, he has never been far from the Keep so far as we know. We did not even know his name until you brought back your report. Fiona scryes out the Keep from time to time, and had reported his presence, and Jasra's recent apparent absence. It is apparently difficult to scrye there, all that power presumably creates interferences. It was not thought of any particular significance, simply a natural development, another son for Jasra. I didn't see him as a major player, just an understudy thrust into a role beyond his ability...but have come to believe I may be wrong in this instance. Here is my pet theory: he's Dalt's. Jasra has a lust for power, and a taste for dangerous men. After Brand died, who else is around that fits the bill? Her son's buddy who just incidentally happens to be a rebel prince of the realm. What better blood to breed a powerful child? The other possibility I see is that his father is a Chaosite. She was Dara's handmaiden, after all. I don't see that connection being easily severed, and Dara is powerful and vengeful."

Wired*Nun

"Yes, I had forgotten about that part. That might favor the Chaos explanation, or may have something to do with his mother's side. Jasra is a Chaosite; we have all been assuming she is something analagous to our non-royal Amberites - but who is to say? Perhaps she physically could have taken the Logrus, but was not taught shapeshifting or given the opportunity - so she took her own path to power, through the broken Pattern, sorcery, and the Fount. We can't be absolutely certain she has not treated herself with it. Hmmm....the more I think about this, the more I am certain that the lineages and connections of these individuals hold some keys to our riddles. I know Josh has been briefed," here she looks annoyed, "on something that I have not, to be told to you and the rest after you leave. I'm not sure why, but Random must have his reasons. I'd really like to know what that is, if you find a way to tell me without violating your instructions. I have the feeling I am beginning to put this puzzle together, but I need more pieces. Let us not forget that, from the descriptions of the 'invitations' Dunstan gave, this Maze-thing was involved."

Interesting, can't say I'm happy about that, but Random must have had a reason...I suppose we'll set out tommorow then, and learn and plan while we're on the road. "Actually," - here she holds up a hand. It seems she is taking a Trump call, and from Landon. He seems to be giving her a report. This is her side. "You need to look at this Maze, both Asmundson's and Siodmak's. I need a report on them. If you see that Nightmare, get out with a report at all costs. Also, next time, organize your team more. You will probably need to either go in with guns blazing, or completely by stealth, because I don't think bluffing will work. And take care, but don't be careful."

After she is done, she passes on, "Well, nicely timed. Landon has tentatively located two of them. One is probably in Asmundson's home shadow, and one is on the top floor of the building in Flagstaff where Siodmak and Joakim make their headquarters. It appears to be some kind of pattern-like construct. So it appears they have one hostile location, one possibly not. Frankly, if he decides to assault the Flagstaff maze, you may want to combine your forces and examine it together - but that's your decision."

Raevyn wakes up the next morning, looking out her window to see the snow falling, flakes resting on the balcony. 'Once the sun comes back out, it will all melt again; not enough of a proper snowfall today. I much prefer lots of thick snow, once the sun's come out to make everything look clean and white.'

She cleans up, dresses in a sweater, pants, and low boots, and heads to breakfast, singing quietly to herself, trying to shake that 'bleh' feeling the grey, cold sky was trying to impose on everything.

I want to be ready for when we finally do get underway.

Roland awakens to the quiet sound of snowfall out his window. It aids the tranquility of his morning stretches and meditation.

Afterwards he casts the Trumps once more. Who knows the most about this assasination, or who can lead me to the most knowledge on the matter? Hopefully a far more complete set will lead to a better reading.

When he's done he leans back in a chair and does a Sketch of his room here in Amber. He'll spend some time on it perfecting the Sketch until it is time to reasonably expect breakfast. Then he'll head down to the dining room to see who there is to dine with.

Theres something to be said being only so bright - it's hard to plot betrayal with a brain the size of a walnut!" "Whatever would work best for the artists. I don't mind having an extra day here to train with the guards, but I don't see any harm in being on the road yet either....On second thought, yes. If you can transport your supplies and everything easily, I'd like to move us to a Shadow where we can plan propperly."

Good thinking Josh, thanks for speaking up.

"All right," Josh replies, "I'll get ready. Raevyn, can you come help me gather up the stuff? We can transport it all as is. If you guys meet us in Raevyn's room, with your gear, we can go from there - unless we want the horses, in which case we can meet in the back near the stables."

Rae nods, dabbing her mouth with her napkin, grabbing one last piece of fruit as she stands to follow Josh to get everything ready to go.

Kat chuckles along with most when Lester attacks Josh. He is a cute little fuzzball. Determined to finish breakfast, she listens to the banter back and forth between Roland and Josh. So we're on the move. I'd prefer the horses but that's Roland's decision. I wonder which way he'll lean. Better voice my opinion.

"I'd prefer if we took the horses but it all depends on how we really plan to approach, so I suppose that's up to you Roland." She glances across at Josh, "You seem particularly certain about Dalt. Given what we're attempting to do though, we really don't want to set anyone else against us, so there's no reason we can't approach him in a proper manner either. The last thing I want to do is annoy a relative regardless of whether we have their measure or not."

Josh keeps quiet as he hurries to the rooms. He seems to be energised by the prospect of - what, a change of scenery? Maybe he doesn't like keeping secrets...no, this is Amber, can't be that.

Once there, he says, "be right back." He goes to his room, and a few minutes later, Raevyn feels Trump energies next door for a few moments. A few minutes after that, Josh comes back to her door and, after knocking, comes in. "All packed, let me get those easels ready." He sets up the easels for easy transport, and gets the supplies put together. "Now we just have to see what Roland wants to do - horses or no. I have a trump of my shadow, so we can directly there."

Raevyn nods at Kat before she leaves. "We should definately take some time to discuss all the angles first," she says. "You'll know where to find us; if we're taking the horses, which I also suggest, swing by and get us when you're ready to go." She heads back to her room, taking Josh's direction on what the best way to pack it all away. They'll likely be ready to go by the time the others are.

Kat returns Raevyn's nod, "Okay Raevyn." She waits for Josh and Raevyn to vacate before asking Roland, "Is everything alright? You just seem... I don't know, a little preoccupied this morning."

She finishes her breakfast and sets the plate aside before downing a glass of juice. "What do you want me to see to before we leave? I can get the horses packed if you want to take them along, otherwise I can procure some equipment or weapons for those who don't seem to have any obvious ones."

Roland finishes off his breakfast and turns to Kat.

"Well, I had thought we'd be leaving after lunch, but everyone seems anxious to go. If you could see to the provisions we'll need, food, water, that sort of thing, along with arms and armour for you and your men I would appreciate it. I'll be going by the armory to pick up armour for myself as well, but I'd just rather do that in person. I'll gather the horses together and inform the elders. I'll meet you at the stables in...2 hours?"

"Two hours should do it. I'll see you then." Kat stands and starts heading towards the door. She says over her shoulder, "You know, we still haven't had Raevyn cook for us yet. We'll have to put her on cooking duty once we're underway." Maybe that will cheer him up a little. Better round up the men and see to the provisions. So much for the exercise this morning, but we've worked together beforehand, so it should be relatively easy to mix well together.

Not wanting to waste any time, she goes straight to her rooms to pack those belongings which she will be taking with her and to fetch the men who should have returned. When all three are done with the personal preparations, they head to the armory to see about arms and armor. They take the liberty of amassing a couple of crossbows and bows along with ammunition. Kat ensures that an extra few daggers are packed as well and not knowing whether Raevyn has a personal weapon, packs a rapier and a sabre for her cousin just in case.

From the armory, she and the Orphans then see to the extra provisions of food, water, rope (you just never know), medical kit (extra bandages, etc.) and so on. They pack as they would for embarking on the missions they're accustomed to and experienced with but they don't overdo it either. Once they have what they need, they then head to the stables to acquire steeds for Zane and Marc and thus begin the wonderful art of packing supplies onto horses and into saddle bags. Kat secures Bordase of course and sneaks the gelding an apple and carrot to smooth the way for saddling him up again.

The three then spend the rest of the time talking quietly between them as Kat brings them up to speed with what the plans are, at least as far as she is aware of such.

When the Trumps and art supplies are secure, Raevyn looks around the room. She gets her bags together, repacking her clothes, and grabbing a few medical supplies as well. It doesn't take her long to get packed. 'I wonder if we can stop in Avalon quickly; that's where Josh said he left Spindrift...If not, I suppose I can make due with another horse from the Castle stables...'

Pushing back from breakfast Roland stands and heads towards the armory.

He takes his time, trying on a few chainmail coats, and picking over their selection of daggers. He eventualy settles on a chainmail shirt (short-sleeved), a padded leather tunic to wear underneath, a set of steel forearm guards, and a trio of long daggers. One dagger is strapped to his left boot, another to his right thigh, and the third at the small of his back. The armour he has bundled into a sack that he slings over one shoulder on his way out. Should have made more of an effort to find some mithril in Middle Earth.

After the armory he Trumps Flora to fill her in on the "plan," or at least the fact that they're heading off now, and would send reports as warranted. Then he Trumps his father to say goodbye. When the calls are done he makes his way to Raevyn's quarters to help them gather up the supplies to meet Kat and the Orphans out by the stables. He knocks on the door when he gets there.
