Heading up to bed, Raevyn takes a wrong turn somewhere, and ends up in a hallway with four guards. One is guarding each end of the corridor, and two seem to be standing in the middle. All are Amber armsmen, wearing Random's colors, and look very competent. They are well armed and armored. When the one nearest spots Raevyn, he watches her, and directs her correctly (and away) to her own room.

"Er, sorry...Thank you; I don't know how I got so turned around." Raevyn promptly leaves, heading for her own room. 'Yep, definitely too tired; it's been a very long day. Wonder what that was all about? What could they be guarding? I shouldn't worry about it too much; it's not my place, and I have enough to think about at the moment.'

She continues on to her room.

A night's sleep passes without event.

When morning rolls around, Raevyn takes time to clean up properly and get dressed, in a simple blouse and slacks. 'Now, about breakfast...Family dining room, or in the garden? Might run into one of the others in the dining room...Maybe I'll see if Joss is up yet; I'm not sure if he knows where the dining room is.'

As she leaves, just out of curiosity, she wanders back in the direction of the hall she had stumbled across the night before, trying, with her limited knowledge of the castle, to determine what's in that direction. She won't try to get too close; she just wants to see if the guards are still there and if there's been any change. Then she'll continue to Joss' room to see if he's ready for breakfast.

Kat's breakfast is waiting in the suite. Looks like no one updated the kitchen staff on her needs. Today, that's convenient.

There are no Amberite guards in the hallway from last night, but there is one armed but unarmored fellow in burgundy and black, standing in the hallway. He gives a little half-bow to Raevyn when he sees her, but keeps watch on his surroundings even as he watches her.

If she ends up continuing on, she will find that Joss is not answering his door.

In which case, Kat will eat, eat and eat some more. Once she's done eating, she's going to take a look out into the hall to see if the guards are still there. If they are, she's going to ask if she's been given leave to explore or if she's still to remain within the confines of her room. If given leave to explore, she'll want to try and find the gardens. If, however, the guards are gone, well she's going to go for a bit of a wander around the halls to see who's about and doing what.

Some time around midnight Roland makes his way back to his rooms, ready for sleep. After taking care of the usual neccesities he settles down, not all that troubled to be sleeping in a strange place, they've all been strange places for the past several years now.

<yawn>I've got to start talking to people in the morning...need to...

'Hrm...well, he must either be a deep sleeper, or already up and eating. Move along then...' she thinks, continuing on to breakfast.

Breakfast is served in the dining room, as people show, rather than formally. Martin and Patrisia arrive about the same time as Raevyn. No one else of note is there right now.

"Good morning," Raevyn says cheerily, nodding to the couple. "I hope everyone had a nice evening; mine was rather pleasant. Looking forward to this evening?" She chats as she sits primly at the table.

As he gets dressed Roland ponders leaving his sword in his chambers. After a few moments he buckles it on. Who am I kidding, I'd feel naked without Smoke.

Leaving his quarters he follows his nose, leading to the kitchens, or the nearest source of good smelling food. He'll stop for breakfast, or anyone he might bump into who looks like they wish to speak to him.

mmm....I hope they drink coffee in the morning here...

Sloe-eyed Patricia smiles, somwhere between demure and catlike, and says, "Yes, a pleasant evening indeed. This evening shall be quite an affair. I don't think we've ever had three Introductions on one day before."

"Hmm, I hear it's that Katarzyna that showed up yesterday at dinner. Benedict's, the story goes. I guess a few years of peace and all the elders start bringing their progeny out from where they tucked them in shadow. Makes for interesting times, anyway."

Servants direct him to the dining room, where breakfast is available until it becomes lunch. When he arrives, he sees Raevyn, Martin and Patricia there.

Arriving a bit late Roland smiles at the small group gathered.

"Good morning everyone. I'm sorry I'm late, I'll be joining you shortly if that's all right." Roland makes his way to the kitchen, hoping to cook up some eggs for breakfast.

Dressed in very much the same manner of last night, Katarzyna is again wearing her uniform of black and burgundy. One hopes and trusts that it's a fresh change, at least there is no ill smelling aromas drifting away from her. She smiles when she spies Roland, taking time to nod politely to Martin and Patrisia in recognition. The courtesy is extended to Raevyn, one she doesn't recognise, a small tilt of the head directed towards the unknown lady. "Good morning all," she says politely, "I hope I'm not interupting."

She glances across at Roland, "I was hoping to find you today, at least before the festivities got under way. There's something I need to tell you but first I'd best not be rude." Looking at Raevyn, she says, "Hello, I am Katarzyna."

Resigned to the notion that he won't be able to cook his own breakfast, and that other people are actualy expected to be serving him on a pretty regular basis, Roland loads a plate high with scrambled eggs, sausages, an array of fruits which are familiar yet different, and a particularly appetizing looking pastry which involves a lot of chocolate. Returning from the buffet he spies Kat and smiles a greeting, pointing his eyes towards an unoccupied spot at the table.

Setting two cups of coffee next to his feast he takes a place at the table, near Raevyn, with room on the other side for Kat should she choose to join him. In a moment he is quickly but politely working his way through the eggs.

As Raevyn's about to respond to Patrisia, she sees Roland enter. "Morning, Roland! I hope you didn't try to drop by yesterday after dinner; I ended up turning in early. Maybe we can chat later today, before the celebration."

Kat kind of winces as Raevyn beats her to the punch, at least where Roland was concerned. "Yes, I am." She nods and looks to Roland as he pauses in mid-bite. "I really should have mentioned that last night."

Responding to Roland's gesture, she does sit down near him but directly opposite rather than beside, this way she's able to face both Roland and Raevyn. She seems curious about the two, as if wondering what their connection might be. He didn't mention any sisters or cousins last night, aside from Martin. I wonder who she is in the theme of things.

"I'm still rather new to all of this and really didn't think last night was quite the time nor place to carry on about my lineage. I hope I haven't offended you Roland. I honestly didn't know if I was to be included in today's festivities until I saw Pri ... Aunt Florimel this morning." Kat offers a shrug, "I thought today's picnic would be a better time for it." Glancing at Raevyn, she asks, "Would you like to join us? Roland and I were discussing the possibility last night, seems like a good way to see the lay of the land and to get to know one another seeing as we're family and all. You are family I take it?"

LynMars
12th of August, 2004, 13:35
"Hm? Oh yes; I had dinner last night with my father, Gerard, and my brother, Joss; Dad wanted a private meal, otherwise we'd have been at the family dinner." The word 'brother' comes out as if she's not used to it quite yet. "A picnic sounds wonderful. I really should get some work done; there are a lot of new Trumps to make, apparently, but I suppose it can wait until after today's celebrations." She turns to Martin and Patrisia, not wanting to be rude and excluding them. "I suppose you two already have plans for the day?"

[Now that's a subtle sense of humor, ha, ha.]

Roland sets down his fork and leans back with a cup of coffee, looking at Katarzyna for a moment. A smile sneaks across his face.

"You know, you still haven't told me where in the family you're from. But that's ok, I'm not too worried about it. I don't think you're my sister, I'd think dad would have mentioned something. No, don't worry about last night, it was a pleasure to talk to you, if it didn't come up, no need to force mentioning who your parents are." The smile leaps back onto his face for a moment as a flashing grin, completely devoid of subtlety or subterfuge. "We're still on for the picnic right? Raevyn, what do you say?"

Ooh, do I need to invite...ah, no, they're preoccupied, probably don't even know we're here. Noting Martin and Patrisia deep in talk and a little oblivious, or politely letting the three get acquainted. Never can tell.

Kat ah's, "So we are cousins as well. Seems this extended family is starting to take on size and shape." She smiles across at Roland, "Tis Benedict and my mother passed on sometime back now, so ... " Another shrug and a somewhat sad look to her eyes. "We don't speak of the dead where I hail from, so you will excuse me if I have not much to say. Of my father, I can tell you little, as we are only still getting to know one another in a sense. Plus, I still don't want to prejudice your opinion of him."

Changing from a smile to a grin, she nods, "And it would take one hell of a storm to cancel our picnic I think. I wonder how long this whole announcement thing will take."

Letting the couple chat, Raevyn turns back to the other two cousins. "I only heard of Loric as being a son of Benedict, though I've never met him. Joshua knows him, though. I still need to get a hold of him...The announcement and party are scheduled, I believe, for later today, so we should have plenty of time to ride somewhere, so long as it's not too far; we'll likely have to get all dressed up and whatnot, and that takes time, so the sooner, the better?"

"Loric is my brother, yes. Different mothers of course and we've still yet to meet properly." Kat starts eyeing off the pastries near the buffet, having stared at Roland's for a few seconds. "We know of one another's existence but fortune hasn't yet dealt us the same hand."

"I don't know Joshua though, or Joss, is it? Perhaps Joshua might be able to steer Loric and myself towards one another, but then again Gen... I mean Father, might want to do that of his own accord." Kat leans her head to one side as something dawns on her. "Of course, I hadn't even considered it, what to wear? I'm so used to uniforms and military dress." I didn't pack a formal dress!

LynMars

"Sorry; Joss is my brother, and being introduced tonight with you and Roland. Joshua is another cousin, helping investigate the circumstances that brought about Roland, Joss, and my meeting.

She smiles, comfortable with some thought or another, "And we can always remedy the dress situation after our picnic. I'm not really all that hungry just yet and Roland's still finishing his breakfast. So that gives us ample time to find steeds and a picnic lunch."

As she waits for Roland to do the division, she ponders a few things aloud, "I suppose there would be stables in a place like this for horses. So Roland," she glances at him again, "You mentioned your own steed Bill, so you must have him kept here somewhere, yes?" To Raevyn, "Do you have a preference for a breed or temperament in such? Wouldn't do to get you something meek and mild if you prefer a steed with a little bit of zest. The only thing I need to do beforehand is return to my rooms and grab something. It shouldn't take long." She looks again to the pastry, "Just as well we're going to discuss your circumstances over lunch, Roland. This lone pastry wouldn't be enough to keep us focused."

Between mouthfuls, she says, "I'm guessing we shouldn't have too much difficulty if any." She then looks to Raevyn, also waiting her cousin's reply. I do remember how to get to the room from Pri... " Kat rolls her eyes, "Aunt Florimel's office, from there I know how to find my rooms. So if we stick to that formula, I think we'll make it there without qualm."

She flicks a quick glance Martin and Patrisia's way, "Nice to see you both again, enjoy your days, both of you." That little bit of polite family business out of the way, she heads off out the door and into the corridor, her words slightly muffled by a bite of pastry, "This way."

Raevyn spends some time organizing a light picnic basket ("light" being relative when it comes to Amber appetites), more than enough for the three of them--there may be unexpected company added. She starts to head for the stables, pausing only to leave a message for her father, telling him who she's going out with, what they plan to do, and when she thinks they may be back, in case he looks for her for some reason. Then she goes out to meet the others.

"I suspect Raevyn might forget to bring wine. Should we pick up some on the way to the stables?" Questions in due time...she likes to keep things to herself, no need to pester her with questions...I do wonder how she came to arrive in Amber at the exact time we did though..

"See you." Roland calls to Martin and Patrisia on his way out the door. Allowing Kat to lead the way he adds further detail to his mental map of Castle Amber. A map he began to sketch out last night, but which still has enormous gaps in it.
Kat does just that, leading Roland through a section of the castle. Pausing at some point, she points to a door and murmurs, "Florimel's office, fear it."

"I suspect Raevyn might forget to bring wine. Should we pick up some on the way to the stables?" Questions in due time...she likes to keep things to herself, no need to pester her with questions...I do wonder how she came to arrive in Amber at the exact time we did though..
"Do you think she will? Perhaps we can raid your father's supply as you suggested last night? Are you game?" There's the hint of a challenge in the way she says that before she takes off again, leading the way through a hall and finally stopping before another door. This one she opens and steps through into the rooms beyond.

It's a double room, the first containing two single beds and a door through to a second room, which Kat then enters into. Inside the next room is a single bed. Neither room possesses windows but they all have ventilation shafts. At the end of all three beds are chests, most likely storage containers. Lying across the end of what appears to be Kat's bed is a sword, belt included.

Not saying much, actually saying nothing, Kat buckles on the belt and straightens the blade to her satisfaction. Walking to the other end of the bed, she lifts the pillow and removes a smaller blade, a stiletto. This blade is tucked into her left boot where there is provision for it. Nodding, she turns around and glances at Roland. "Ready?" Your turn to be the tour guide now. Will he comment on the beds? Maybe... but he'll probably have questions. Do I answer them? Good question.

"I'm game, we'll just need to find directions somehow. I don't know where he keeps it."

Three beds? Three trunks...curious...

When Kat announces she's ready Roland smiles and nods. As the return to the hallway he accosts a passing servant and comes up with directions to a cabinet where some of this father's wine is stored.

"This way then...how many bottles do we need?"

It would reflect that well on anyone if we showed up to our own introductions somewhat intoxicated." She almost shudders at the thought, "Imagine what Aunt Florimel would do to us." And you don't know her like I know her.

She gently slaps Roland on the upper arm, "Besides, we wouldn't want to waste a drop of your father's good vintage either. Royalty or not, I can't abide wastefulness." Quietly she asks, "Does it seem strange to you? Going from what you were to the son of a Prince of Amber?"

"Agreed, two bottles it is." Roland has his head halfway in the wine cabinet they were directed to. hmmm...I have no idea what year it is...making vintage a questionable concept... Looking over the labels of the bottles Roland selects two that have only a light coat of dust, and seem to be only old rather than some of the blatantly ancient bottles in the collection. He rises with his prizes in hand. "I think these should do. On to the stables."

"Does it seem strange to you? Going from what you were to the son of a Prince of Amber?"
"Somewhat strange. I was raised in a rather monastic setting. We were a self-sufficient bunch, sharing the daily tasks that needed to be done. Our main duties were the ones we were most suited for. As none of us really excelled in shovelling manure, we all shared the load...I've been travelling for the last few years now. People have treated me better and worse than what I was raised to expect...I think I've been insulated from the oddness of royalty so far by the fact that I haven't ventured too far among people who are very concerned about the fact that I'm the son of a prince...And yourself? How do you find thing here?"

Kat continues to follow Roland's lead, expecting him to know where the stables are. "I'm not sure," she says, "I really haven't had that much time to digest it. I was raised differently than yourself." She pauses to consider Roland, before admitting, "As Royalty in fact, but I don't consider myself pampered or spoilt, far from it. It helps if you're removed from the actual throne, so I joined the Royal Guard."

Her hands clasp behind her back and she glances down a hallway wondering where it leads to before dismissing it and returning to the conversation. "It doesn't matter if you're from common, noble or royal stock once you join the Guard. Everyone is treated the same, we all had the same purpose and it doesn't help anyone including yourself if you're going to whine about sleeping in the dirt."

"We're also quite different when it comes to our experience with travel. Aside from where I grew up and Avalon, Amber is the only other place I have been. I wasn't even sure how long my stay here would be until advised this morning, it was eventually settled upon by the King and Father overnight I suppose."

Roland does indeed know the way to the stables, without undue delay they are picking out Raevyn's horse.

"So, we both come from a background of protection. In Regan the Order was the only real defense that the community had from outside raiders, or border wars that threatened to spill over into our home...I must admit I'm puzzled though, how does royalty join the royal guard? Seems counterintuitive to me...I shouldn't pry though, you are certainly entightled to your privacy." And I think you like to keep it...

Roland does indeed know the way to the stables, without undue delay they are picking out Raevyn's horse.
Kat seems more inclined to let Roland pick Raevyn's horse so she can save time by picking out her own steed at the same time. She's not after a full-blooded stallion, far from it but she does want something bold and even a little temperamental, if of course there's one to be had.

She agrees with Roland's take on things, "It would seem so, yes. Why do you think they would do that? Our Fathers I mean, rather than raise us here and expose us to the game?" Surely your father must have explained this to you, like it was explained to me. Will you admit it though?

Kat laughs, "If one joins the Guard, one is a Guard and no longer what they were before. Simple really. I imagine that would all be altered if the entire family to which they belonged was wiped out in some bizarre circumstance and they were the only one left to inherit the throne, but it has never happened."

Raevyn meets Roland and Kararzyna by the stables. "I think I have enough here for when we...Oh, you brought wine. Knew I was forgetting something. Are we ready to go then?"
Kat steps out of the stables leading a horse she has finally decided upon. "I think so, yes. Roland's picked your steed, I think he's made a good match so you shouldn't have any trouble."

[Feel free to detail your posts yourself, any time - e.g., describe and name a horse, etc. What good is it to be children of Princes if you can't have what you need of mundane things? Amber's stables probably contain something in the order of 200 riding horses at a time, not counting military or draft animals, of which perhaps a quarter are owned by individuals, a quarter are unavaliable (breeding, injured, whatever) and about 100 available for use. Think very, very rich...]

"It would seem so, yes. Why do you think they would do that? Our Fathers I mean, rather than raise us here and expose us to the game?" "Partialy to let us be raised on our own, free of court pressure. Moreover the younger, less developed we are the more easily we can be hurt, or made pawns against our parents...I suspect it's much more of the later than the former. There are notable exceptions, but in general it seems as though we were born into a rather dysfunctional family...quite unfortunate."

Here they split up for a few moments, Kat selecting her horse, Roland picking one out for Raevyn.

"Hello again Raevyn. This is...Oh...I forgot to look at her name. Well, as you can see she's a lovely brown horse. Seemed very friendly when I met her." Good job. Always good to save looking stupid for when both women are present.

Once he hands off the reins, Roland heads back in and gets Bill from his stable.

"Excellent!" Raevyn replies, making friends with the mare. "I'm really looking forward to this little ride; I haven't had much contact with others who are...relatively close to my own age. Not since we left our old home, anyway." She checks everything over, then mounts.

She glances briefly at the huge pile of logs by the stable wall. 'Wonder if Dad's been logging again...maybe that's where Joss has been; they may have gone out to do "guy things" or somesuch.'

Kat swings up into the saddle and leans forward to rub the chestnut brown gelding's neck. "Let's see what you can do, Bordase," she murmurs to the creature before nudging him forward and then letting the reins go loose in her hands. It's her knees that control the horse for the moment, turning him one way and then the other, getting him to move forward, then back and when satisfied, she has him come to a stop. "Good boy," she whispers to him.

"Seems you know the way, Raevyn, so we'll follow your lead. I think Roland and I don't particularly like playing the role of tour guide. However, to make up for it, we'll let you tell us all about yourself first." She winks at her two cousins here and makes a sweeping gesture with her hand, "Onwards?"

Riding south, then west along the coast, an hour brings them out of the heavily populated area to a lovely beach backed by farms and farmland. They are some distance north and east of the Vale of Garnath still, which has been slow in recovering from the great fire, and the Black Road's original debouchment into the countryside of Amber. A few miles south and they would come to Faiella-bionin.

The wind blows gently; it's a perfect day on the beach.

"Oh, well, I don't know my way around that well...But I guess I do know a few ways around here." She rides forward, pleased with the horse's responses. She looks over at Kat. "I've spent the last several years at my father's estates, up the coast a bit to the north. Before that, we lived in the shadow my mother was from. It's a beautiful place; an island chain in the middle of an indigo ocean. She was a healer there..." Rae trails off a bit, then shakes her head, her smile coming back instantly.

"My life's been rather boring, really; I mostly stay home and paint. What about you, Kat?"

Kat seems comfortable in the saddle, relaxed as she listens to Raevyn's account of a 'boring' life. "I'd call that pleasant and peaceful, not boring. Sad how we children of Princes seem to lose our mothers, I share your loss Raevyn. Anyway, my own life has been rather different to yours. As I was telling Roland, I grew up a ways from Avalon as royalty. Nothing special mind you and don't fear that I was a pampered princess or the like. When of an age I joined the Royal Guard and that is what I became."

She looks towards the coastline and inhales the freshening air, "This reminds me of border patrols we used to undertake on occassion. Where was I... oh yes, that's right, the Royal Guard. A while back now, Benedict came through on a recruitment drive and the rest they say is history." Very quickly becoming set in stone.

Being Roland's turn, she prompts him, "Now for our cousin Roland's tale."

Fresh air again, horse beneath me, wine in the saddlebag...life is good.

He looks around at the scene, and his companions. Let's not forget good company.

"Me? I grew up in a small community of artisans called Regan, not too far off in shadow. I was raised by an order of monks. They didn't have a name, they were simply The Order. They saw to my education, Julian stopped by when he could, seldom staying as long as a month, but he would bring books that he thought would be good for me. He also often came with tutors, philosophers, scientists, fencing masters, a master swordsmith once."

"I've met other monks out in shadow, it turns out that the Order are an unusual group. We had no dogma to speak of, we were the protectors of Regan, from bandits, borderwars, that sort of thing. When battle was called for we rode forth. When no one threatened the land we tended our gardens, philosophised, and trained...I also painted some, learning here and there in town."

"A little while after I turned 30 Julian came one day and told me we were going for a ride. It turned out to be a ride through shadow. As we rode he told me about Amber, about the family, and what he called my birthright. We arrived in Amber at night and quietly went to the basement where I walked the pattern. I assume you've both been through it?...Good, then I don't need to try to find words for that."

"Once I made it through dad and I travelled in shadow for a bit, he taught me the things I needed to know about working with shadow. Caine travelled with us for a while, he taught me the basics of Trumps." Roland smiles and laughs remembering, quickly followed by a shadow of sadness. But Caine's dead now. "They both took a turn showing me how much I had yet to learn about battle. Dad with the sword, Caine with the dagger. I picked up a few more tricks from them before we parted ways. After that I spent a few years travelling in shadow, taking part in whatever cropped up. Then this business with Dunstan began a couple of days ago, and here we are." Did you tell Kat about Dunstan? No

"We'll have to tell you about Dunstan." Should Kat prove willing to listen, Roland will rattle off the whole tale, leaving nothing out...except the brunette. No need to look like a slut.

LynMars

Raevyn listens carefully, especially if he gets to the point after she left through Trump with Joss and Siodmak. "I still don't know what to think about all of that. My own encounter with Dunstan was so brief...Rinaldo may have been the one who killed Uncle Caine, but..." She shakes her head. "I don't think I like this much, but I don't think any of us who were there can afford to ignore it. I do owe you a full account of my experience with Dunstan's 'invitation', don't I, Roland? And Kat hasn't heard it." She'll go into full account of her experience, starting with the incident at Neptune House, up until she was Trumped back to Amber by Gerard, along with Siodmak and Joss.

Pygysys

Kat will prove very willing to listen to the tale, both sides of it. "I had no such encounters myself, most likely because of my parentage if I was to lay a wager on it." She shrugs and those paying attention would note the slight crease in her brow, "Or perhaps he just didn't know about my existence." Or maybe he knows it too well and that would not do. The crease smooths and she informs you both, "The King, our Uncle, has assigned me to assist in this investigation. So rather than complicate matters, given that you are my cousins, Joss is as new as I and Siodmak isn't related that we know of, I'll place myself at the disposal of you both. Try not to get me killed though, I don't think my father would appreciate that somehow."

Reining her horse in, she sits a little taller in the saddle and regards you both. "I'll be honest with you both, I don't know who's who here or who does what or the like. I don't know the in depth history or alliances or grudges or anything like that. What it means is I can give you an outsider's perspective as much as anyone but as much as this can help, it can also hinder. I'll take orders, I'm used to such, but don't abuse it. I know this is rather forward on my part, but I'd rather save time now than argue it later."

She gestures back towards the castle, "They play games there, I was warned of such and maybe you were too. Even now we play a game and that's about the only warning of such I can give. I'm not your enemy today, I'm your ally but that doesn't mean tomorrow won't change which side of the board I'm on, or yourselves. Saying that, I'll trust you as much as you trust me. Right now I like you, I like you both so I hope you won't think of me badly for what I've just said." With all that said, she relaxes in the saddle again and smiles, mischief in her eyes but waiting to see the response of her cousins. Let's see who wants to play with the cards face up.

Raevyn blinks, a bit taken aback by Kat's statements. "But...I'm not any side that I know of; I don't know any of the factions here, either. I just want to know what's really going on. I certainly hope this doesn't get anyone killed, or that we become enemies."

'Dad, I think, tried to keep me away from all of that, it drives him so crazy at times...Have I fallen into it anyway? The things she said...' Raevyn's face hides nothing; girl couldn't play poker to save her life.

Roland nods while he listens to Raevyn's story and Kat's speech.

"Agreed. In this together, until we find some reason not to be. Raevyn, I'm not one for intrigue or betrayal, which, I sense, may get me killed around here. Time will tell...As for being on sides, no, it doesn't feel to me that I'm on any particular side either. Nevertheless there's always a decent chance that someone else thinks you're not on their side. And really, by that point it's all symantics...I think you can trust me, both of you, and I suspect you think that as well."

"And Kat, I have no intention of giving you orders. Not even polite ones, unless there's some extraordinary pressing need and no time to explain. I'm looking for partners here, not minions...let's see I might have something in here that'll help."

Roland turns and rummages around in his saddlebags for a moment.

Kat turns to Raevyn as Roland rummages through his saddlebags, "Forgive me Raevyn, but I know in part why I'm here and I only think it fair to draw out who else knows what goes on here. Your father has done his best most likely, but you were bound to be drawn in eventually. If all I have done is open your eyes to the fact that family might not always be trusted or relied upon, then that's a start. For now, we three are on the same side and that is a great relief to me, for it is somewhere to begin." Her tone is in no way condescending or arrogant, if anything, perhaps envious.

She glances over at Roland, "One of us will have to take charge, Roland, surely you know that. It's all nice and pleasant to say we'll all be equal and the like, working together but when we need one voice to speak and one direction to head, we need one or two voices to be heard above others. This makes yourself and Raevyn the logical choices. Now I've placed myself at your disposal once and I shall do so again now, I suggest you accept that. By taking the lead, we are not stating you my better or vice versa, we are protecting ourselves from fractioning. Do you see my point?"

"We three can be partners. If you think by following your lead I become just your minion, then you are mistaken and need to rethink such. In private we can discuss whatever may transpire, but publically, during this investigation, we need a united front and deference. Again, it is you and Raevyn I will defer to. Will you accept this, yes or no?"

Roland looks up from his saddlebags to gaze at Katarzyna. Confidence...respect...authority...decisiveness... why is she not in charge? Possibly used to this role...possibly orders...

"I will accept this, Katarzyna...I questioned you as I did in part because different military traditions lead to different notions of "order" and "command." Your notion is the right one for us I think. If you defer leadership, I accept that choice."

Kat seems to accept Roland's words and nods, "Good. It's settled then, you are the spokesperson, the one in charge and Raevyn your second." Smiling Raevyn's way, Kat offers some friendly advice, "Just speak firmly if you need to give me an order, as if it's a natural thing to do. If you're timid and meek, it will look like you're begging me and I'm simply humoring you. I won't take offense and should something concern me, I'll ask you about it in private. If nothing else, then it will seem to others we three are aligned, so if they wish to interfere with one, they will interfere with all. It might have someone thinking twice before they do something impulsive, like this Dunstan or possibly Rinaldo if we happen upon him at some point."

Now that's settled, at least in Kat's mind, she glances across at Roland and murmurs to Raevyn, "What do you think he has in there? I'm almost afraid to ask him."

With a sigh Roland finaly emerges from his saddlebags. A bottle of wine is in one hand, the other is empty. While he opens it he explains.

"I had hoped I'd brought that book with me. The Great Book of Amber...biased as it might be it is an interesting thing and I thought Raevyn might like to look at it. Apparently I didn't bring it with me though, unfortunate. However, I did bump in to our wine, which needs to be opened, and at least tasted, to seal the deal so to speak." The cork pops free. "Call it superstition if you like, a need to formalize some things in an informal way." Roland takes a drink from the bottle and passes it to Kat.

Oh hell...she said I'm the leader didn't she?

"I don't know...Is kind of worrisome, isn't it?" Raevyn replies, her mood begining to lighten again. As Roland pulls out the wine and makes his explanation, she looks sheepishly at the wine bottle. "I still can't believe I forgot that."

She looks around, enjoying the pleasant weather and scenery. "We're almost to the stair. Father took me down it once, right after I walked the Pattern, for a dinner with Aunt Llewella. It's really quite amazing. Breathing water is an odd experience."

It seems Kat is happy to seal things with a drink, taking the bottle from Roland to drink from it. "Perhaps it's a good thing if we don't read that book? Remember how I said I didn't want to prejudice your opinion of Benedict? Well perhaps that book will prejudice our opinion of others? You've read it, so you will no doubt have some opinion on things." She offers the bottle to Raevyn.

Raevyn shakes her head. "I don't think I quite understand the need for all this, but if you think it necessary, I suppose I can go along with it."
"I do Raevyn. I have a shared court and military upbringing, I know what happens if the members of a group all want to follow a different lead. On the one hand it can cut time tremendously but on the other, it separates each individual from assistance. Where there's a court, there's politics and you only have to examine the motives our parents had in keeping us from Amber's court to know it's best to be on guard. Protecting themselves and us, it's a rather daunting motive in my opinion."

She looks around, enjoying the pleasant weather and scenery. "We're almost to the stair. Father took me down it once, right after I walked the Pattern, for a dinner with Aunt Llewella. It's really quite amazing. Breathing water is an odd experience."
Regarding Raevyn quietly, Kat remarks, "I've made you uneasy. Would you have had me speak to Roland privately about all this, excluding you, if I had the time over?" Let's see what you're made of cousin. Startled fawn or slumbering bear?

Raevyn considers Kat's latest remark, sighing. "No. I see little need for subterfuge and plotting and planning, that's all. Perhaps if our elders had remained straightforward in their dealings with each other, there wouldn't be such a need for caution and having to worry about things like having to show a united front. There wouldn't be relatives we're told we can trust above others, while being told that certain family members we are to stay away from. I want to try to get past all of that. I see no reason why the three of us just can't be friends, without worry about daily politics."

Roland notes with a touch of worry that Raevyn hasn't taken the bottle of wine. Not that he's one to pressure someone in to drinking...This is a bit different.

"We're not proposing some grand cabal to cause trouble, Raevyn. Strange things require a bit of investigation...Whether we like it or not games are being played, by virtue of the fact that the players of the game desire us to be brought in, we too have become players of a sort. Small ones for now I suspect. And I hope it stays that way, I hope to live through whatever is going on." The look of worry deepens on Roland's face.

"Raevyn, you have powers and skills that I lack. You have strength that I lack...I find myself in a game with magicians and unknown powers, but I was raised a man of the blade...I need your help." There's no hint of deception, either this man is an incredible actor, or he's speaking directly from the heart.

Kat agrees with Roland, "It's true Raevyn, we three want no trouble and I confess I prefer it that way. I also know that sometimes what we want is beyond us even if it is only for a length of time. We must also admit that this is a game of sorts, this investigation. It would seem that Dunstan is the instigator but as none spoke with his mother, we cannot be certain that she was choosing to manipulate you through her son."

Kat looks to Roland, "If I understand correctly, Rinaldo and Dunstan are brothers. Rinaldo is a King. Why would he take this place of power by force? Did a falling out occur between him and their mother? If he is really mad, what of Dunstan? Might he inherit this madness? What is it cause, if any? There are many questions and the obvious course of action would be to investigate Rinaldo, but is it?"

Her gaze switches to Raevyn, "We don't know the players here firsthand, I suspect you might know some. Or at least it might be easier for you to lead us to them, as you have resided here in Amber and you are known. How you are known we can possibly use to our advantage if need be." She gestures to Roland and herself, "We are not known, we are spoken for, but not known. Can anyone even contemplate the amount of toes we're likely to step upon?"

At last she smiles again, warm and friendly as her hands rest upon the pommel of her saddle. "It is my hope for us three to be friends but we cannot just say it is so and thus it is. With our intentions in the open and some measure of truth between us and thus trust, it can become so. I say measure Cousins, for we all have secrets, I've never known anyone not to. Sometimes these secrets are not our own but we are bound by them. I will not pry for any you hold and I would ask the same. I can say assuredly that any secret I hold poses no threat to either of you or those you hold dear, I trust that is enough for you both."

Kat glances Roland's way and her tone has a bitter edge to it, "I couldn't imagine losing a place you loved, so completely that there was nothing left to suggest it had ever existed." I don't have to imagine but I don't have to accept it either.

LynMars

"Depends on what you mean by basics. I've had some practice with shadowwalking and altering chance to my favor. My father also thought it prudent that I learn how to defend myself from some methods using the Pattern. I had entertained the thought of learning sorcery, using the Pattern to augment that, but I don't know yet if I want to take all the time and dedication required, when I all ready have one Art I'm fairly enslaved to." "I'm free to sit whenever it would work for you Raevyn...I was hoping to ask if you might be able to give me a few pointers...My Trumps don't have the permenance of the real thing, they're just sketches really. Caine didn't get around to showing me any more than the basics."

Accepting the bottle from Roland, Kat grins at him, "Maybe we should have grabbed three bottles instead of two." Nothing to do about it now, best to enjoy the wine, the food and the company of my cousins. Family, tis a strange thing.

"I'll leave that particular Art up to the two of you. I've never been particularly interested in it or sorcery for that matter. I'll probably be quick to change my mind if I ever find myself in need of a disappearing trick." She uses the bottle to point up ahead, "Howabout that spot there? Looks good enough to use for a picnic."

"I've had Fiona give me a pointer or two, but a lot has been trial and error from what I remember from Caine's lessons. I'll be happy to help, though I still have some things to learn myself. Joshua knows a few tricks I don't. I really need to call him, ask him how his investigation is going, and invite him to tonight's festivities...Though I really hope he and Joss can get along. He cut Joss' hand during that first disastrous Trump contact."

She glances off to where Kat pointed. "That does look like a good spot. Let's set up there." As they ride, she looks for her sketch of Josh, still unused, since he had called her the day before. She has it ready for after they settle down for lunch.

Roland settles in and distributes food to everyone, opening the other bottle of wine while he does so. He sets Smoke on the ground at his side, still in its scabbard.

"I doubt they'll be able to gather every family member together; there are still a few I haven't met, for various reasons. Speaking of introductions, though..." She turns off to the side and looks down at Josh's picture. "I hope you two won't mind? He might not come through, but if he does, I made sure there was enough for one or two extra. I just want to see if he's all right, and to let him know about this evening."

I can wait until I get back to the castle, though. We should probably be heading back soon anyway"

When she says she wanted to see that Josh was okay, it's not because she doesn't think he can take care of himself; more of a genuine concern for someone poking into the affairs of an unknown but potentially dangerous sorceror like Dunstan, if Josh's own investigation into the matter had gone far enough.

Time to think and yet not time to mo... no, I won't think about it. I've enough to keep busy with, what with Dunstan versus Rinaldo or vice versa and of course I have to learn more of the intricacies of Pattern. Then there's getting to know the Family, that's going to take some getting used to. I need to wrangle Bordase ... oh the list goes on.

"Apparently we, or I at least, need to be back, in Flora office, dressed up in two hours. Then the headache begins. On the plus side though, it'll be over at some point and we can get on with our business. I should probably get back a little early to find some suitable clothes."

Roland, having the advantage of riding his own superb mount, as well as excellent horsemanship, eventually pulls ahead, with Kat and Bordase close behind. Raevyn is not too far back, but the mare isn't up to Spindrift's standards, and despite effortless riding by the petite Raevyn, can't match the others' endurance. The race is called after several miles, at the milestone that marks the edge of the Amber City proper. At this point they are among small, dense farms, and traffic is picking up. Most people seems to be heading in to the city.

The horses are blowing as they walk off the gallop, and are glad of the rest as they turn left at the slight uphill grade heading to the Castle. All told, it takes about an hour to get back, enough time to clean up, change, and make the appointment for the three newest-acknowledged Family members' rehearsal at Flora's office.

She tells the Stablemaster she would appreciate that knowledge, as he's a fine horse and she would like to look into his breeding some day and perhaps visit the kingdom of his origin.

There are no special instructions for him at this stage, as it's very obvious that the stables are under excellent supervision and all the horses well kept. After leaving the stables and returning to her room... Kat's going to ask around on her way there to see if anyone is aware of Prince Benedict's whereabouts. If they are, she's going to detour to him beforehand.

If, however, he's already at Florimel's for the dress rehearsal, then she'll go to her room first to bathe and change. As for what she wears... a fresh uniform of course, with all buttons, buckles and the like polished, as well as all creases sharp. Best to present a good militaristic impression and let that be the image she presents, rather than lace and frills.

The ever-helpful and knowledgeable staff says he was last spotted in his quarters. Detouring there, Kat knocks on the door.

Coming suddenly face to face with the Benedict, his eyes burn with intensity as he takes her in from head to foot.

"Katarzyna. Come in." He turns his back on her briefly, leaving the door for her to close. He goes back to the mirror, and adjusting the simple, elegant uniform. It bears the Unicorns on the epaulettes that only he can wear. There are no other rank or medals displayed. The jacket is cut high, nineteenth-century style, with trousers bearing black piping. A matching formal, if still functional, saber, rests on his bedpost.

"Thank you, Sir." Kat steps into the room, closing the door gently behind her. She doesn't enter the room fully, content to stand before the closed door. "I hope you will forgive the intrusion but I wanted to speak with you in private. What you have agreed to on behalf of the King is also a great service unto me, for that I wish to thank you and also acknowledge myself in your debt."

She swallows before continuing, "I will also strive not to embarass you or cause you any dishonor. If there is anything you would wish me to do to ensure this, any instructions or like you wish me to follow, please advise me of such and I will strive to achieve their aim." This was a lot easier played out in my head.

He reaches across the space between them with his left hand. The other remains behind his back. Grasping her shoulder he looks down at her face, and his expression softens. "I understand the reasons. I do not dislike you for them. I just do not like this situation. I have done it because the King has asked me to. It is a tactic, and like all tactics, is temporary. I must put Amber first." He lets his hand fall.

Kat is visibly relieved and comforted by his words. "Thank you again." No need to repeat myself as to why I'm thanking him again. Keep it simple Kat.

He buckles on the dress saber. "Looks like you have been riding. I'll leave you to clean up, and meet you down at Flora's lair at five." He opens the door for her, and follows her out, locking his door behind him, and departs for downstairs.

[Just waiting on Joss to catch up. I will go forward with the rehearsal, but beyond that, will have to wait for him.]

Flora takes the three out in the Great Hall and runs through the ceremony by the numbers. It involves a prayer and address by the King, then an address/introduction of each new family member by the parent, then a short speech by the younger, and finally the Oath of Allegiance by all three, together. The oath goes like this:

"Upon the holy Unicorn, I will support and defend the realm of Amber, its rightful Sovereign, and its people, against all enemies, from within or without, with no reservation of honor, or risk, or of my life itself. This binding oath I solemnly swear."

She makes them rehearse it several times, though the phrases will be given as it is sworn. Tho Oath will end with each member laying his or her sword at the feet of the King, who will knight him or her at that time. Gerard will lend Joss a blade.

After that, they will wave to the crowd and be cheered. All this will be visible to the people by images of reproduction cast around the city center, arranged for the occasion by Fiona and Bleys. An invisible physical barrier, as well as wards against power and magic, will be present on the balcony where all this will take place. The balcony, on the city hall, faces the great central plaza, a high second storey.

Flora reminds everyone to compose his or her address, then runs through it one more time to be certain. If there is nothing else, all seven will Trump down at the stroke of 6pm, on Fiona's Trump.

An oath, to king and country. I would defend Amber of course...But an oath to Random? What if he is a shitty king?...Well then he wouldn't be the "rightful Sovereign" would he?...Perhaps, Perhaps...I know that in all liklihood, given a few days I'd gladly make this oath after meeting Random...But I am loathe to make an oath for public courtesy alone...Think boy think, what have you heard, what have you seen of Random? The data is there, think! Run through it all again...Is he deserving the crown?

Roland learns the motions and words of the ceremony readily and allows most of his mind to wander off, pondering all the information it has about Random.

Joshua is on a balcony overlooking the central plaza, across the square from the City Hall. It looks to be a good vantage, not crowded. Must be reserved for the more fortunate, or something. A couple of the nobles sharing the balcony pointedly do not stare as she Trumps in - kind of like ignoring the celebrity that walks in to make the statement that it's not that big a deal. It does remind her of the gulf that separates her and even ordinary Amberites, much less shadow dwellers.

"If you want to get on the balcony, you can, but you have the choice, I guess. I'm supposed to stay here and help fine-tune the 'magic television' that Bleys is throwing up for the people. This is a good viewpoint, too."

The rehearsal ended, the seven wait for the stroke of 6pm. At that point, they all trump in as a unit on Random's trump, held by Flora. They arrive on the balcony overlooking the crowded plaza. There are tens of thousands packed into the square, and obviously more in the streets and other plazas around. Everyone is out in their finery.

The crowd roars deafeningly as they appear, and there is wild cheering from everyone. The free beer and wine probably helps, too.

In full regalia, with crown and scepter, King Random steps forward to the balcony. He offers a short prayer, and quotes from the Book of the Unicorn: "Blessed are the lost that are found. Blessed are the finders, for they shall know joy, and blessed also the welcomers, for they shall know celebration."

Benedict takes the podium first, as the eldest. His voice and image are amplified all across the city.

"Good evening, people of Amber. I would like to present to you my Katarzyna: Captain, warrior, soldier, daughter, she is all of these things and more. I am very proud of her for the exemplary life she has lived, and for her courage in giving up her secure place in Shadow, and coming to Amber, to shoulder the responsibilities of a Knight of the Realm. At her cue, Katarzyna steps forward and inclines her head to Benedict, murmuring a simple thank you to him, which is lost in the cheering of the crowd. Stepping up to the podium, she takes the time to look out over the crowd and ready herself, waiting for them to quiet long enough for her to speak.

"It is no easy thing to leave behind that you have always known and kept you safe but it is harder still to deny the call of Amber and serve Her. Often I have heard others speak of the jewel that is Amber and I have known I must travel here. They speak of the crown, the Royal Family and I have known I must join my family. It is when they speak of her Heart, Her People, I know that I must serve with open arms and heart. Your embrace, here and now, affirms the decision made and will strengthen me as I serve Amber, Her Sovereign and Her People!"

That said, she steps backwards away from the podium before turning to take her original spot on the balcony and leave the speeches to those better suited for them. I've probably committed heresy or treason, they're going to lynch me!

"If you want to get on the balcony, you can, but you have the choice, I guess. I'm supposed to stay here and help fine-tune the 'magic television' that Bleys is throwing up for the people. This is a good viewpoint, too."
Raevyn smiles at the nearby people, trying to offset that uneasiness she feels and is certain they do as well. She looks around, noting her surroundings, checking out the view. "I think I'll stay here, if you don't mind. I'll try not to disturb you."

Raevyn watches the proceedings, clapping as appropriate, trying to maintain proper decorum. Can't be an embarrassment, after all.

[Fabulous!]

The crowd goes wild!!! There is nothing like a proud, regal, beautiful, selfless woman to wow an audience. This is doubly true to the citizenry bereft of the "benefits" of the overstimulation of modern electronic entertainment. To them, this is high drama and history, a thing to tell their children.

After a few moments, Random raises his hand to quiet the crowd. Julian is next, and steps up the lectern.

"Friends, Amberites, citizens; today is a proud day for me. Raising children is always a chancy business; I am fortunate that my efforts were rewarded, with the best son any father could hope for. I am speaking to you of Roland. A few of you know him, and more will soon. He is already a skilled defender of the Realm, but more importantly, is a loyal defender of the realm. He has Amber's best interest at heart, and will exercise the authority given him with the maturity, wisdom and good judgment I have come to expect from him. All hail, my son, Roland."

The crowd goes nuts again. Julian turns to Roland and gives him a sardonic smile, and gestures.

Of course, everyone on the relatively uncrowded balcony with her is focusing on the procedings. There is one fellow who catches her eye. Tall, with an elaborate hat, he seems somehow familiar. Watching him for a few moments, she sees nothing suspicious, but can't shake the feeling she has seen him somewhere.

Nothing...he's about 6'5", but he's wearing boots of some kind, so that could be off bit quite a bit. About 195 lbs, hair unknown, eyes blue. It is more his manner and general facial shape that seem familiar. Family? Possibly.

At that moment she becomes aware that he is probably aware of her. Although he gives no outward sign, something changes slightly.

With a quietly chuckled "Thanks" Roland steps up to the podium, watching the crowd while he waits for relative quiet. Breathe deep there...just like Regan...but bigger...way bigger. His voice rings out loud and clear, not betraying any hint of nerves.

"Thank you, People of Amber. I do not know what the future might bring for Amber. But I do know that I will be here, in times of plenty and in times of darkness, for I have come Home. And if I can protect that Home...this Realm...Amber, from harm by my life or death, then I shall. Amber, you have my heart, my sword, my service and my love." He claps a fist to his chest and gives a slight bow before stepping down from the podium and returning to his place with the other, breathing deeply. That didn't go too badly...I think...

Another sustained cheer rings out. Next up is Gerard. He steps up and the crowd goes even wilder than before. Apparently he is quite popular. He raises both his arms, fists over his head, as if he were lifting weights. This brings another surge of cheering.

"My friends. Today, my heart is complete. I have only recently found the one who was lost. Truly, blessed are we, me most of all. I would like to introduce to you, Joss, my son. Even were he not a man after my own heart, I would love him. It makes it all the sweeter that he is a man of strength, of decency, and of the sea. He is ready to take his place in Amber; welcome him now, as I have welcomed him."

More noise, as the pounding of a vast surf. The crowd takes up the chant of "Joss, Joss, Joss.."

Joss looks somewhat overwhelmed, but heads up to the hot spot gamely.

"Thank you all. I have lived as an outsider for so long, out in Shadow, that I do not understand this outpouring of happiness. I will accept it, though, in the spirit that it is given. Thank you, and I will try to live up to your good will. I am - "

At this moment, Benedict breaks his position of attention and in a blindingly fast move, launches himself at Joss' knees, clipping his legs out from under him. Joss drops like a stone, and there is a spray of blood, from where is not immediately apparent. Benedict rolls to his feet, blade out, and the open portion of the balcony opaques, as if the railing were suddenly a wall, floor to ceiling. Those on the balcony are plunged into near-darkness, with the only light coming from a glow of whatever has come into being above the balcony rail, and some reflected light from inside the open door behind the King.

Random turns and looks inside the building, sword suddenly in hand. Flora produces a revolver from somewhere, and pulls out her trump deck. Gerard roars and dives almost upon Joss, shielding him with his body. Julian snatches Roland and Kat by the collars and yanks them back against the wall, one on either side of him, and draws his own blade.

"Shiiit!" yells Josh, and makes a reflexive gesture, strange words coming almost unbidden to his lips. Lester leaps off of Josh's shoulder and scampers straight up the outer facade at an amazing speed.

The tall man that Raevyn has been watching turns, looks at Raevyn, then rounds a rainbow corner and vanishes into thin air.

The crowd goes almost silent, then a babble of confused voices fill the air.

What the ... Kat doesn't really get to finish that thought as Julian yanks her and Roland back against the wall. Best to act on instinct, so she flattens herself as her back makes contact with the wall, drawing her sword as best she's able. This could get crowded. What is that thing? With the wall at her back, she's more concerned about the thing that has come into being and so that's where her attention is focused.

Roland's sword is out by the time his back hits the wall. His eyes flicker through the half-lit balconey trying to retrace where the blood must have come from.

Who was hit? Kat and Dad are here, they're fine...likely Joss...Balconey is protected from the outside, what about the other entrance?

Once he figures out who was hit, or once he realizes he can't figure it out Roland's attention snaps to the doorway, the remaining opening for assault. As pointless as it may be in the company of such people, he is ready for battle.

On the balcony, Gerard is cradling Joss' head. There is a palm-sized crater in the front and a fist-size exit wound in the back of his skull. The blood loss is irrelevant; Joss has been murdered. Gerard seems stunned into insensibility.

Random goes into the building, yelling at the guards. Benedict sheathes his blade and draws his Trumps, shuffling out one one-handed and looking at it. Flora is also concentrating on a Trump, and vanishes a moment later. Julian starts swearing under his breath, oaths to curdle demons' blood.

"Roland, Katyrzyna, secure this place until I tell you otherwise. Do not let anyone disturb it," He crouches down next to Gerard, placing his hand gently upon the big man's back. "He will be avenged, brother. For now, we need to go."

Finding that there is suddenly ample room on the balconey Roland steps away from the wall, carefull not to step in any blood, or on any objects. Joss is dead...Later...where did the shot come from...where did it go...Think Boy! Record the details, don't let them go...Keep an eye on the hall there...

The now-opaque ward feels to Roland like a slightly-electrified steel wall. There is no hole or chink in the barrier to see through.

The wall behind where Joss was standing is scarred by an impact. After obtaining a torch from the guard inside the building, it is easy to see the bullet lying upon the floor, among the other detritus. It is deformed but not fragmented. The trajectory would put the shooter to the left of the balcony, as one would stand on it, and up higher, probably a rooftop. It occurs to both that Benedict is already addressing this aspect, as he had reacted either before or at the shot, and had tried to save Joss. He therefore must have a good idea of the firing location.

Outside the balcony, Raevyn pushes roughly through the crowd, uncaring as with her Amberite strength she shoves people, large and small, bodily out of the way. The crowd isn't panicking as much as might be expected. The probably did not hear the shot, did not see Joss go down for certain, and are more confused than anything. She comes first upon the husky man prone upon the flagstones. A woman is wailing over what seems to be her son, lying headless nearby.

She looks down to see Joshua making his way through the crowd toward Raevyn. He waves his arms about him and the crowd is forcibly parting, without touching him at all, as if he is exerting some invisible force against them. He is being none too careful, and he begins dragging off the mob, man by man, and flinging them skidding down the cobblestones. Going to be a few broken bones and cracked heads today.

Amber's troops are starting to restore order, cordoning off avenues and wielding staves when necessary. Kat sees her two armsmen, in her livery, swords now sheathed, beneath the balcony, arguing with the Amber guardsmen. It looks like they are trying to get in to the building, probably to check on her status.

Hearing Kat's improvised second speech Roland nods in approval. Good...very good...good thinking with the podium, good content.

"Raevyn, are you hurt?" Before the question is fully phrased Roland has satisfied himself that she is uninjured. Putting away his cards Roland bends down and heaves the man into a corner, carefull to keep him out of any evidence, the man's hands are folded on his lap in plain view. He then draws his sword and stands back from the man, out of arms' reach, but close enough for a lunge. Roland turns his attention to his cousin, keeping the newcomer in view.

"Thanks, Katt," Raevyn replies, smiling up at her. Bolstered a bit by her cousins' reassurances, she looks down at the square, searching for Joshua, looking at the aftermath of the confusion sadly. She wondered how this had happened in the first place; the balcony was supposed to have been protected from outside disturbances.

The man falls back unconscious.

A trump call comes in to Roland.

Josh gets up and walks in to the city hall, heading upstairs to the council chamber.

The ward on the balcony goes down. The sudden breeze is chilly.

So she does just that, keeping an eye on the stranger and getting ready to pounce should he be feigning.

The cool air, in comparison to the stuffiness of the confined room that smells of blood and burnt leather, stimulates the stranger back to a semblance of lucidity.

“…eh…where….happened….” groans the man dressed in black, red, and gold.

ehhhh, that hurt, oh man does that hurt, nowhere does it not tingle like my body…..ahhhh…..was asleep for a day. Who are these people and why am I wet?

The point of Katarzyna's blade comes into view as it slowly swings around as she steps to the side and looks down at the waking man. "It would serve you no purpose to rush matters, stranger. I suggest you lay there and remain still, lest you lose something dear to you in causing me to lose my temper. Understand? Now when you are able to speak, I suggest you answer my first question. Who are you? I suggest you don't babble and hold your own questions until ours are done, as I will not hesitate to give you incentive to pay heed to my words."

She seems very sure of herself and she's positioned herself close enough to be able to reach the stranger with her sword, without putting herself within easy reach. And if you thought your evening was off to a bad start, Kat, imagine what this fool's thinking. Be careful though, he could be your cousin's murderer.

Blinking once then shutting his eyes for a second or two she can see that he is having trouble focusing on her. It is but a few moments before his eyes open again and he notices the blade she holds near him.

"Heldrik, come to Amber to find my long lost family. If I am where I think I am, then I am laying in the blood of a relative I will never get the chance to know", he says with a hint of anger.

The stranger, who has identified himself as Heldrik, very slowly turns his head towards Katarzyna, his face twitching in pain only slightly. She can tell that whatever happened to this guy wasn't pleasant.

It's a sarcastic tone that responds to Heldrik's answer, "Then Heldrik, you'll be pleased to know that you are indeed in Amber. You'll also be pleased to know that for the moment you are under arrest. I'm still in no mood to have you on your feet just yet, so remain where you are. Whilst tempted to hear your tale and know what has brought about the tragic events of this day, I do believe my superiors will prefer to question you firsthand about such."

Here Kat smiles, "However, I should not wish to be rude, so allow me to introduce myself, Katarzyna, Knight of the Realm and Captain. Hey I might as well use it till I abuse it. I will be the one to run you through should you pose any threat to myself or my companions." For the moment she does seem to mean it, but she doesn't wave her sword around to emphasize such. "So let us continue with the small talk instead. You say you have come to Amber to seek your family, I will know who that family is and who your parents are."

I can tell you that my grandfather is Oberon and, if I am not mistaken, a greater part of my family was on this balcony trapped behind some wall."

A fine captain she is to, giving it to me straight, and despite the talk and her tone the point of her blade has not moved more than a hair this whole time. My first assessment at her acceptance speech I think was correct.

At about this point Heldrik starts taking some rather short quick breaths, you think that even saying that much so quickly might have taxed him a little bit.

It's possible he's bluffing about family and he's neglecting to mention his parents, be it intentional or otherwise. If he is family, it won't suffice to have two die this day. Best to check his wounds and to get someone to check Raevyn. "Watch him," she tells the nearest guards, "You know what to do if he is foolish."

Putting up her own sword, Kat sheathes the blade and kneels down beside Heldrik. "I'm not a fully trained physician," she tells the patient, "But I know enough until one gets here. So no argument." Expecting none, Kat starts to check him over to see what damage has been done. Burns and lacerations are her first priority, then broken bones. Heldrik first, he could have internal wounds I'm not aware of, but then I want him to examine you for shock. I don't care if the only tonic he's got is a stiff drink, you take it." Bossy, ain't she?

She then turns her attention to Heldrik's abdomen once any burns, cuts and possible breaks have been located and/or identified. Time to check for internal bleeding of any sort. "Tell me if any of this hurts." The prodding begins. Where is that bloody physician anyway?

As far as Kat can determine, Heldrik has nothing more than a nice set of bruises and a few mild electrical burns. If he really is family, he should be fine in less than a day.

One of the military medics bustles in, goes and starts a similar routine with Heldrik - checking vitals, pupil dilation, etc. "He may have a mild concussion, but it looks like nothing life-threatening," she says to no one in particular. "I'd say he just need to rest and drink fluids. No alcohol." She slaps some bandages on the burns, sets up a quick IV, and hands the bag to Kat. "Keep that elevated, ma'am. Take it out when it's empty, and discard it. Have him take some aspirin when he can drink. Keep an eye on him, and keep him awake for at least six hours. Head injuries are funny sometimes. If he starts acting crazy, get him seen again. If he's...um, nobility, you should probably get an attendant physician to do a complete exam, just in case. If there's nothing else, I have a more patients downstairs." She closes up her bag and gets ready to go.

If Kat gives him permission he will sit up with his back to the cool stone wall.

I haven't had a shock like that since walking the Pattern. This gladly was not nearly as draining, just stings a lot.

Glancing down at Heldrik, she nods her approval to his request to sit up.

Her gaze follows that of Heldrik's to the blood and her jaw clenches, "We mourn Joss this day, as far as I'm aware we mourn no other. Best you keep your wits about you and take this moment to rest. I assume that it is only a matter of time before you are brought before those with more authority than I. It's their questions you're going to need to save your strength for. The three behind him head for the balcony. They are carrying a large trunk, which they proceed to open and start laying out equipment. Mechanical cameras, sample jars, and less identifiable things are arranged on a folding table.

Catching Roland's thought, Julian says, "So they are arrived. Gather everyone up, and come on through. Josh and Lester join the rest. He is carrying something wrapped in his cloak.

The Great Hall is awash in activity. It looks as if a command post has been set up at one end, with soldiers and constabulary bustling in and out, tables, maps...Fiona, Random and Bleys are visible among the bustle. The door to Flora's office stands open, and she is probably in there as people go in and out.

The group of youngers arrives in a far corner, and Julian looks them up and down, settling on Heldrik. His face becomes even grimmer as he points at a sturdy chair, and says to Heldrik, "Sit and remain." Threats at this point would seem superfluous.

A Chinese screen has been set up and a view of the designated chair is blocked...probably to keep Heldrik from easy observation. Presuming Heldrik sits [presumin Heldrik is not suicidal], a constable slaps leg shackles on him, so he is attached to the chair and his leg movement will be inhibited. He is also searched and anything of note is taken off of him. He has no Trumps. His scabbard is taken, and Josh waves for the constable to hand it to him. Josh unwraps his cloak from the sword, puts the cloak back on. and sheaths it the blade, hanging on to it.

A moment later, just in time, Gerard comes striding into the room, and heads for the command post. All eyes follow him, and he walks purposefully up to Fiona and grabs her upper arm. Bleys starts to intervene, and Gerard reaches out fast and grabs him too, by the shirt front. The shock in their and those around's eyes is evident as he half drags, half carries them out of the room. Bleys, probably exercising more retraint than normal, opens his hands and does not resist. Random follows right afterward, and the rest of the staff fall silent as they leave the room.

Julian, surpressing surprise, says to the four - sorry Lester, five - "Looks like Gerard wants some answers. I'd hate to be responsible for that warding right now." He looks pointedly at Josh, and the rest. "Like I said, stay away from him right now, except maybe you, Raevyn. You will probably be able to help...later."

"Well, since they are off having a sibling spat, I suppose I can start with our prisoner, here." He turns to Heldrik, and calls for chairs to be brought over facing. He sits in the one facing, and gestures for the others to sit if they like. Looking at Heldrik, he says, "Start at the top, and spill it, man. It's no threat when I say, if I'm not happy with your answers, Fiona will be glad to rip them from your mind. This way is easier."

After that I am not sure what happened, but damn it hurt a lot and the Knight Katarzyna took charge of me as a prisoner."

Julian looks annoyed at this whole mixed-up story. "For now, we will leave the details of your parentage, but I am sure the King will want to know. So let me summarize, see if I missed anything. You were raised in slow-time shadow, by parents yet to be disclosed, but not allowed to leave your area of shadow. Your parent disappeared and about 25 years later, you saw Oberon's final message appear to you. The shadow storm followed shortly after, which further disruped your area of shadow. You were able to eventually escape, and have been wandering in shadow ever since. Not knowing the way to Amber, you worked your way slowly toward what you felt was the area of Order and the Pattern, which you took secretly long long ago. You arrived earlier today in Arden, which was the call I got from Major Keldram. You used some form of Pattern scrying to observe the procedings in Amber, and when the attack started, you used a Pattern gate of some sort to impulsively come and tried to rescue us with that stunt that left you in this state. Is that a fair summary?"

"Umm, nice to meet you." Lester holds out his hand for a shake, man-style. He seems to be grinning. "And this is Lester. He's quite harmless to his friends, and he's smarter than he looks." Lester backhands Josh's ear, gently. "Lester, this is Roland, and he's your friend." "Ooooo Kaaaay," squeaks Lester distinctly. Maybe that's the only human speech he can produce, but undoubtedly he understands it.

Josh seems to be somewhat distracted at the moment, as if he is only half-listening to Roland, and half to something else. He is looking in Heldrik's direction, but not really at him exactly. "Roland...did Raevyn say something about you doing Trump? Do you think you could do a sketch of Heldrik here while we wait? I'm sure someone can run and get you some supplies."

"Yeah, no problem." Crap...is it rude to ask someone if they're in a Trump call when they obviously are, but haven't told you so?.... "If you need to take a call feel free to do so." Roland will either bring his sketch book and pencil out of his bag, or, if social decorum indicated he not bring it to the ceremony he'll ask the next passing servant to get him some paper and a writing utensil. Damned noble of me. "Get me this. Get me that." Bah...

"He will get a hearing, at this point I am inclined to believe him, if only by the contrast between the expertise of the assassination and the ineptitude of his overenthusiastic attempt to help. Katarzyna, go do what you need to. Hang that IV on the screen, he's not going anywhere. Roland, keep an eye on him. Josh, would you hand me that blade?"
"Thank you, Sir." Kat does as instructed and hangs the IV on the screen. She addresses Heldrik quietly, "If you have need of me, then send for me and I will come." Having nothing else to say to the prisoner at this time, she turns towards Raevyn and closes the gap between them. "Come Cousin, let us take a walk. I could use a drink and I feel that you might too." Kat slips an arm around Raevyn's shoulders, apparently not leaving any room for objections as she attempts to guide her cousin away from this specific area of the room. Raevyn will note that the pressure around her shoulders is light, giving her opportunity to stand fast if she so chooses.

"I'm not taking a call. This guy showed that he could walk into Amber from a distance, I'm making sure he doesn't try to leave the same way."

Lester is still holding out his paw, and shrieks, "OHHHHH KAAAAYYYYY."

"Sorry, Roland, he gets kind of insistent sometimes. Unless you are a rodentophobe, can you just humor him for me?"

Roland soon finds his book and pencil in his bag.

Can he read my thoughts some how?

Heldrik opens his eyes and looks at the two still in the room. With a little bit of a cringe he replays his first waking moments after being struck down, the pain was intense. Meanwhile he watches this Josh for any reaction, as if he was somehow looking in on his thoughts.

[i]Joshua, a man to watch. I wonder if he has the all seeing sign up? From his comments that would seem likely or perhaps there is another power or trick for which one can see mystic energies. To summon my own would show him my talents and skill, but perhaps....

"Oh, Sorry about that Lester, it's been a rough day, I got distracted. Nice to meet you." Roland politely shakes Lester's paw before sitting down and beginning the sketch. Right...Josh is a sorcerous type....so many damned sorcerers running around.

"Um, okay." Raevyn gets up and goes with Kat. As far as she can tell, this man seemed lost and confused, and not the one who had murdered her brother. 'Or maybe I'm just being generous and wanting to take him at face value...But Julian seemed satisfied...'

She allows Kat to lead her away. She'll gladly drink whatever Kat gives her, at least the first one. After that she'll carefully sip anything else.

Kat does her best to find a quiet area before sending a servant for a bottle of brandy and two glasses. "How are you holding up? I know what it's like to lose family, Raevyn and I also know what it's like not to mourn. So don't deny yourself when you have the moment to do so. There isn't anyone who would think less of you for doing so." Upon the servant's return, she fills the two glasses halfway and hands one to Raevyn before downing her own in one swift gulp. Kat doesn't pour herself a second drink but does offer to refill Raevyn's glass if she wants.

Raevyn gets her glass refilled and sips, thinking. She finally speaks out loud. "It's odd; my initial reaction was shock, and sadness, and this sense of loss--I'll never get to know him better, and we were getting along so well...But now, I'm just kinda, I don't know; numb, I guess. And I'm worried about Dad. He doesn't get like...that...very often. I can't think of any time I've seen him like this."

Kat listens as she recaps the bottle and sets it down beside her glass. "I am sorry that I too will not get to know him, I'm sure he was a fine man." I don't know what to say about your father though, I haven't had a chance to get to know him either yet. "He'll probably need to get through the initial response, much like you have, but I guess his may be stronger in the sense of being a parent." She shrugs, "Perhaps when he returns from his meeting with Fiona and Bleys you will be able to go to him. He may need you more than he realises at this moment, there is a comfort in that which is shared."
