I don't have a digital camera- your imagination will have to suffice. Her name is Cotton, and she's still almost a kitten. She's black, except for her paws and belly, which are bright white.

Just wanted to apologize. Most of my posting is done at work, which has been exceptionally busy, as it promises to be till the end of February. I will try to get on earlier in the morning for a while, from home and keep things moving. Sorry for the lack of quality.

Back to the voting stuff and for Chalice and Tamarind: Isn't voting compulsory in England?

For those who don't know, voting is compulsory here in Australia. It surprised me when I first found out that voting wasn't compulsory in the USA but every country is different. At the end of the day I'm simply glad that I can vote.

Tamarind
4th of November, 2004, 04:44
No, voting is optional here in the UK and in recent years turnouts have been *very* low...:disa.ed:

Bad news, but not terrible news, folks. Due to the vagaries of what passes for tech-geekdom around here, juxstaposed with the impending move of our workspaces, internet access for me in the evenings (my time) will be very intermittent for the forseeable future. That means, unless I want to stay late at one of our other workspaces (whcih involves detaching myself from my team and vehicle and relying on the buses after dark, which I prefer not to do in this environment) the only time I will be able to get on to post will be during my workday. Some days I might have a lot of time, but most days I will only have a little.

This situation may or may not be alleviated when and if I obtain a new logon to the evening spot, or when we move to our new location, which may or may not be as scheduled on or about 1 December.

All this ultimately means that things are going to slow down. Rather than apologise many times, I'll just apologise and explain it this once, and it's best to just be thankful for the access I do have, until I get back home. If you feel you are being neglected or think I have forgotten about you, shoot me a note in GM comms and I will try to address your concerns.

And now for something completely different...I'm itching all over. Wonder what I'm reacting to today? I put on a freshly-washed uniform today, makes me wonder about that free Turkish laundry detergent...

Tamarind
4th of November, 2004, 07:54
I'm just happy (and impressed!) that you can manage to keep the game going at all :P

Updated Rae's description, slightly; added some pics that I only slightly altered in Gimp and Paint. Let me know what you think, if it works. I'm not usually a big fan of the PhotoTrump thing, as too often the actors are easily recognizable and to me, that detracts a bit. But seeing some well-done ones here, I played with them a bit myself. Thanks, Pygysys, for all your help in that department. :)

7th of November, 2004, 01:51
Yep - I like the first one best too - mostly for the wonderful expression. Also the face is kind of luminous, which is how I think of Raevyn being, a bit 'lit from within'. A small ray of purity in this murky Family, maybe?;)

Well, I caught up with everyone, mostly, except poor Rebis, stuck waiting on the vagaries of the GM and others. Hope everyone has a good day and/or week, depending on when I get on next. See yous guys laterz!

Hey All,

Just a quick note to say hi, the cast is off, but I'm back on crutches. I got too cocky. I've spent the last few days walking unaided with the cast, but soon found out it was not going to be the same with the cast off.

Also I'm fully ensconced in study mode, so will be posting once a day or thereabouts. Apologies if I'm needed any time soon. My exams end 1 December but until then, I've got to have priorities.

Catch you all later, have fun, take care and Dave: Stay safe!

Wired*Nun

I was tempted to have Random say something to the effect of "do you want me to come over there and spank your little butt?" but I thought that would be over the top.

I've got some access tonight, dunno how long it will be, but I'm taking the opportunity while I can.

Nice scene there between Random and Gray. Nice to see someone smoother than Roland actualy handle her.

On another note: I may be gone this weekend, maybe through wednesday. Don't know yet. My advisor has a....relaxed...view of scheduling.

So, on the downside, I'm utterly sick of travelling right now, but on the upside, it'll be good to actualy get to the lab and do some new experiments.

Ahhh...noxious fumes. Good times....Good times.

The chances of anything going horribly awry with this experiment are pretty darn remote. At absolute worst we could maybe destroy half of a hillside near Berkeley...and that'd require some pretty astounding screwups, like somehow making way the hell more antimatter than they usualy do, and then letting it get out into the area...Nah, we'll be fine....

Wired*Nun

Actualy, Lawrence Berkeley National Labs. Near Livermore, but I gather that they're distinct entities. I'm terrible with names of thing. I suspect that my mental filing system is based on some principle that's not commonly used by rational people. My fiancee is always telling me I come up with odd things at odd times, but then at other times I'll be utterly incapable of figuring out what a refrigerator is called. So I have to refer to it as the big box that keeps things cold....It's not a good system to have really....where was I? Oh, Berkeley, right! Should be fun. If things go preposterously well I'll get enough data that I should be able to crank out a dissertation on it, which would be nice. Because then I could walk around saying "Ooh, look at me, I'm Dr. Conor." And that'd be fun.....oh, I'm rambling again. I'll go get coffee now and settle down.

Thanks for the good luck wishes Tam:)

My Amber geography is a bit fuzzy- what floor is the library on, is it near the edge of the palace, and if so, what is just out the windows? In my head, it's on the second floor, facing east over some garden grounds. Just for everyone's vague references, the stables are just west of the palace (toward Arden, away from the sea - seems to make sense) and Benedict's Japanese Garden is at the far north end of the grounds. I usually don't try to pin these things down too firmly.

I suggest, when this type of thing happens, the following steps:

1. Always type in or copy into a word processor, and save your work. I do this routinely, every time, any more.

2. Get yourself antivirus and adware-cleaner, even if it's only shareware or freeware. I recommend X-cleaner and the Yahoo toolbar with anti-spy. Panda has a free antivirus I think.

3. Run the maintenance wizard on your computer regularly.

If you do these things, you may have a lot less difficulty.

LynMars
21st of November, 2004, 02:22
I do both Spyware and Ad-Aware SE, as well as Norton. Gets pretty much everything.

And for big posts, putting it to Notepad or Word is the way to go, in case you suddenly lose connection or something.

I'm sure someone asked before, but I don't have the energy to find my reply, which may have been on e-mail anyway. It's a screen name I've used for a long time (since Starcraft at least). There was a song he referred to called "wierd nun" and I started with that but someone else had it, and it occurred to me that "wired nun" made about as much sense (basically none at all). However, it brings me an image of a nun hunched over her computer terminal, her only link to the outside world...in any case, it stuck, I can't explain it any better.

Good news and bad news. Did one, but that took it all out of me. I have things set up in my mind but I don't want to do them until I can do them justice. I have to go back to bed. Sorry, and see you all soon as I can. It's gonna be good, and painful - just ask chalice what I just did to Gray...(evil GM cackles and rubs hands)...

Dave, you are truly diabolical. Melting my brain in Gray's private thread right before I have to concentrate on Christmas shopping...I mean, I thought things were bad when Gray fell off the Pattern, but no - that was just a prelude....:paranoid:

It's not the fall...it's the sudden stop at the bottom that gets you.

On a more serious note it's okay to fall (according to canon) it's just not okay to leave the pattern. Of course falling off would imply that you left which means you have my deepest sympathy, cause you're now officially screwed...

One must wonder how much of that was scary-talk for the benefit of Oberon's children. Anecdotal indications that the whole Pattern thing isn't as rigid as advertised include Brand's departure through the blot, and Oberon (as Ganelon) retrieving Martin's Trump. Sure, those are special cases...but the GM gets to determine special cases, hooray for the GM! At some point Gray's thread will be publicised...

It's not as if Roger didn't like to play fast and loose with the rules of his own multiverse anyway, but, that's besides the point...to illustrate Dave's point I was once in a game where I traversed the pattern backwards from the center out...

No post from Thanos lately, and there's a question waiting in Tam's GM comms, in case something got missed. Bis morgen!

That last post is as clear as mud to me- I have no clue what Almor is talking about in the last part. Am I missing something that Arrotel wouldn't, or is he as in the the dark as I am?
