Astirax Magic Sense

Originally found in: Tome of Sorrows

This rule works with the idea that astieraxes can sense magic with lesser and greater degrees of difficulty depending on the strength of the spell cast. With this rule, astiraxes can sense magic as far away as 1 mile per level of the spell cast.

Sometimes a DM may decide that the chance of an astirax detecting a cast spell should be a random event. The DM may role percentile dice to see if a spell that is cast gets the attention of an astirax. If the result is less than the level of the spell times 5, an astirax has taken notice of the spell. (Cantrips count as half.)

If an establishment, such as a town, is nearby, adjust the chance that the spell will be detected as follows:

Thorp or Minor Road +2%
Hamlet or Major Road +5%
Village +10%
Small Town +15%
Large Town +20%
Small City +30%
Large City +50%
Metropolis +75%

If multiple establishments are within range, their adjustments stack.

This is a house rule that I happen to enjoy. Bigger spells should pop up more easily on the radar than cantrips, now they do. Additionally magic items can trigger an astirax's sense depending on the strength of the enchantment.

Minor magic item: 10%
Medium magic item: 20%
Major magic item: 30%

You may wanna hold off on this one.

The Tome of Sorrows is going to have the adjusted, improved rules for this.

I'm going to keep it as is, if the Tome makes things simpler or better I'll adjust but I'm not willing to go back to the original "only within a mile" rule.

Of course.

I was just being knowing and 'nigmatic.
