Heulwen stands 2' 10" tall, very short by any human standard, but just below average for a halfling. Weighing in at a mear 27 lbs, the years of near starvation under orcish masters has left her frame very wirey and thin. However, since her escape her diet has been filling and varied enough to remove the signs of neglect and malnourishment so common among halfling slaves.

Having managed to escape the lash for most of her enslavement, Heulwen bears remarkably few scars for a former slave, but that does not mean she escaped entirely. The most notable of her scars are a triplet parallel set accross the back of each thigh and one which wraps its way all around her midriff. Fortunately, both are easily hidden by clothing, and rarely see the light of day (or night for that matter).

Heulwen's eyes are the grayish-brown color of dried cedar. Her hair, black as night and straight as can be, is short, only three months' growth since it was last shaved by the orcs (to prevent lice). Her skin, where it has been exposed to the sun (i.e. most everywhere that's visible), is a burnt brown, much like the shade of a cow hide after its been tanned. In those few places that have managed to stay covered for an extended period, it bears a more ashen appearence.

While her current clothes are little more than cloth stitched together to cover her body, Heulwen takes great care to make sure they are fitted decently. Her blouse is simple; long sleeves with no frills, the collar and cuffs little more than string threaded through the cloth and tied to hold it together. A divided skirt starts at her waist and drops to just above ankle level, looking as if it were made for someone just half an inch shorter or so than its current wearer. A long shawl drapes around her neck and over her head, a necessary protection against the cold due to her close cropped hair, more worn out of habit during the warmer season. Through the thread bare cloth its possible to catch glimpses of the leather armor Heulwen wears underneath her outer garments, but one has to be really looking to realize what it is against her skin of nearly the same color.

Life for a halfling under the rule of Izrador it tough, to say the least. Born to a life of slavery, the halflings are worked to an early grave, if their lucky enough not to be eaten by their orc or goblin masters that is. Such was the life Heulwen was born into. Given these circumstances one might think that her name, which means 'sunshine' in the Erenlander tounge, was some sort of cruel joke. However, like many of the more subtle halfing characteristics, Heulwen's name was simply a manifestation of the halfing races unquenchable spirit. Slaves they may be, forced to work for the servants of Izrador, but even so their sense of community and dignity stay strong. May the halfling people be an indication of the future, for if Izrador cannot crush their spirit then surely there is still hope that his harsh reign will yet be thrown off of the world.

But I digress. You asked of Heulwen, not the rantings of an old halfing. As I was saying, Heulwen was born into the life of slavery and drudgery that we all are. Put to work as soon as she could walk, Heulwen cooked meals, mended clothing, carried supplies, and did the countless other tasks that we halflings do for this orc warparty. Out here patroling these plains of Erenland, these orcs live a lifestyle that would be reminisent of our ansestral one, if it weren't for the fact that their purpose is not to live with the land, but to subjigate it. The irony contained in the similarities weighs hevily on this old halfling's heart sometimes.

But getting back to Heulwen, as you no doubt know since you asked about her, the life she was born into was not the one she was destined to live. That realization came in the form of a raid by the orcs on a nomadic community of halflings. Of course during the raid itself, we halfling slaves, Heulwen included, were kept back in camp under the watchful eye of the goblin slavers who were there to collect the surviving halflings. No, truly it was the aftermath of that raid that set Heulwen out on the path she now follows. Some how during the course of that raid the orcs captured a wogren. I know, it sounds ridiculous. Hell, I wouldn't beleive it myself if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, but capture one they did. From the looks of him when they brought him back to the camp all trussed up, he had been caught in a mud slide or otherwise buried. His fur was caked in mud and his left front leg was broken, though that may have been caused by the orcs. Apparently when they had found him the orcs thought it would be great fun to bring him back to their base camp and pit him in the dog fights they loved so much. They speculated all night as to how many dogs it would take to kill the wogren in the ring. Of course he wouldn't be very good in the ring with that broken leg so Heulwen, who had some skill at healing, was told to see that it mended properly. Why she was chosen of all the halfings in the camp none can say. Some think it was destiny, others a coincidence, but one thing is for sure, during the two weeks that it took for that leg to heal Heulwen formed a lasting bond with the wogren. One that was even stronger than normal for a halfling. The orcs may not have seen it but the rest of us halflings certianly could. Recognizing the traits of a true trainer in her, the rest of us knew that we had to save the Wogren and get him and Heulwen away from the orcs. To do otherwise would have been to betray our ancestors who first befriended the wogren.

Well having set on a course of action, we devised a plan. We would undercook the meat for the morning meal, and with the orcs preoccupied with throwing up the meal we would free the wogren and speed him and Heulwen on their way. With a day's travel head start they were able to evade recapture. Of course the orcs were furious when they found the wogren gone. They vowed to kill a halfling each morning until they recaptured it and Heulwen, but after a week for fruitless pursuit they gave up when they realized that killing more halfings would make their own packs heavier.

Its been a few months since Heulwen and the wogren got away. We haven't seen her since, but we know that if she can stay free long enough she might just be able to save the wogren from complete slaughter at the hands of the orcs.
