maps should be arriving at some point
Jalis
A roughly ringed shaped democracy, with the captial in it's centre (Jalis City) and a majority of the towns being arranged in a rough circle around it.
The rail system of Jalis is superior to any other countries, the "circle" of towns are all connected by a rail-ring, with spokes into Jalis City
The people of Jalis are seen by others as hard-working to the extreme. This isn't quite true, simply that working-hard is seen as a virtue all should embrace. A man may earn respect through hard-work and success no matter exactly what his profession is. However the people are not without compassion, and a reasonable level os social security exists so that people going through a period of bad-luck can get back on their feet quickly
Southmead Academy : A school for the gifted
A fairly well known private school located just outside Jalis City, in the countryside. To the majority ( including most students) it's simply a means to a better life through education, but for a carefully handful it's a gateway to life working for the foundation.
A few key members of staff belong to the foundation and through careful observation and screening they bring in the best, brighest and those possessing the a good flexible set of morals
The Foundation
The shadowy arm of the Umbrella Corporation. Recently it has taken an interest in the potential of Monsters and Monster Training.
Not evil per se, just existing ith a flexible morality
Although the "company" does have an interest in military technology
The screening processes and care ensure that recruitment of an agent not willing to go the distance is unthinkable
Outposts exist throughout Jalis and it's neighbouring countries. Few know of it's existence and hopefully it will remain that way
Umbrella
A huge company based(originally) in north Jalis but now slowly spreading throughout the world. A number of smaller companies are actually owned by the corperation but they don't always advertise the fact
Largely known for their work with electronics and medical products
Novtopia
To the north and West of Jalis, this country sits on the coats behind it's mountain range. Currently it's only method of trade and travel between itself and Jalis is by Boat (Air travel is very uncommon in the world, due to the inherent danger in flying in a sky full of monsters, any one of which could no doubt turn on a craft and destroy it.).
The country is small, and not quite as touched by technology as the world around it. The monster catching technology has been readily accessible here for less than five years (as opposed to the thirty elsewhere), it is made up of wide rolling plains with hints of forest, and it's long coast-line which varies between beautiful beaches and harsh rocky cliffs
It's capital is a southern coastal city named Novburg, famed for it's historic buildings and preservation of them (moreso than the rest of the country. Although by outside standards almost every town and city looks ancient)
The government of Novtopia is in a long transitional phase, moving from the monarchy it has used for so long, into a democracy. Although most people would like to keep the royal family as the heads of state, working with the prime minister and cabinet to get things done ensuring tradition and the will of the people.
The evolution of the country from tradition means that the state itself provides very little in comparrison to the two other counties of the region
Metralia
Above the great desert sits the great country of Metralia. It's southern most towns are actually built around desert oasis', although a majority is built on it's wet rocky hills further northward.
A convient mountain pass allows trade between Metralia and Novtopia, in the past most trade with Jalis was conducted by caravan across the desert, making the important and export of goods very expensive and time consuming.. But for the past forty-years a rail-line has existed across the desert. Earlier this month upgrades were completed allowing for cheaper passage, short travel times and increased safety.
The capital is named Relin, and is similar in size to Jalis City. The head office of MonCom is set in the centre of Relin
Metralia's people are stereotypically very friendly and welcoming, altohugh at the same time can be easily offended by a rejection of their hospitality.
In the south were it is much warmer, the people sleep in the afternoons and reusme work in the early evening. The north of the country has largely abandoned this tradition seeing it as lazy and attempting to emulate the hard-working Jalis stereotype.
The country is a democracy, but it has a very strong social security system. With those who are unable, (or possibly unwilling) to work being cared for better than most countries
The Islands
Officially known as The People's Republic of Pelagus. Although the Islanders themselves hardly ever refer to the Pelagus Archipelago with such a "grandoise" title. Instead they simple refer to the Islands, and themselves the Islanders.
The island cluster is located half a week's boat journey from the coast of Novtopia. The cluster contains hundreds of islands, the largest isle (on the eastern edge of the archipelago) contains the single decent sized town in all of the Islands. The island is known as Doga, as is the town upon it, the island itself is fairly plain and flat in terrain, and recieves almost all of the trade with the western mainland.
The terrain of the islands is quite varied, although most fit with the standard tropical ideals. The Islands have little in the way of infrastructure, with the government being fairly weak and self-sufficency as one of the highest ideals of the islanders this is unlikely to change.
Luckily for the islanders, there are large oil deposits which an originally Novtopian company pays to extract, this has the added advantage of the contract explicity stating that islanders are able to purchase oil products at a much reduced rate, which allows them to run personal generators.
The lure of monster trainer is still in it's infancy here, despite the huge number of species unique to the islands which have yet to be recorded.
Elsewhere
Other countries exist, on the mainland, past the seemingly impassable barrier of the western mountains, but trade and communication is exceptionally limited. Other island communities may well exist. And from time to time a foreigner from even more distant parts may find themselves on the hunk of mainland shared by Jalis, Novtopia and Metralia
